    I've been rowing on a C2 for about thirty-five years. I've never learned how to do it properly. It's always been a 'pulling' activity for me. Recently, I decided to investigate the basics on this channel and others, and discovered that no, it's actually a 'push' activity. Long story short, though I'm still really crap at rowing, I did take some of what I'd learned to heart, and began focusing more on my legs' contributions to my session, and knocked a minute off my 5,000m time. It's never too late to learn what you should already have learned. LOL

      (Is it déclassé to respond to your own comment?) I just did a workout where I specifically focused on my legs. Which was interesting, because my mental block is pretty impervious to altering. I backed off on the damper from 6 to 5.5 and managed to knock another ten seconds off my PB. It almost killed me, but I did it. There were segments of the 5,000m where I was purposefully cutting my 'pull' short, just to (over)emphasize my legs. I'd love to knock another 25 seconds off my time, to get in the neighbourhood of mark I haven't hit in almost 20 years. I don't know that I'm mentally tough enough to do it, to be honest, but I would love to be able to use my long levers and general strength to get me there.

    I answered your poll then saw this video... From a cueing perspective. I instruct my athletes to push, swing, and draw. Push with the legs, swing with the hips, and draw in with the back and arms. It takes the word “pull” out of the instructions. On legs only, I instruct to move the handle the same horizontal distance as the hips.

    When you pull, you will "cat back", use t-rex arms, open hips stupid early and almost no use of the legs.
    Every time I think push, my back gets into a better position of posture. The pick drill is a good warmup. Awesome video.

    Very weird feeling exercise! I was discussing the rowing stroke with a friend recently and he likened the rowing stroke up to the hip swing almost like a deadlift. I have never deadlifted, but I can see that being pretty accurate. -Chris

      Yup, it feels a bit like a deadlift to start, and then a barbell row at the end when the arms are used.

    Heh. Imagining you were giving away PUSHES the way Oprah gave away cars to the audience. Made me chuckle! Since having surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, I've been doing lots of squats and when the temptation to get on the rower got the best of me, it's this drill that's been my best friend. Setting the monitor to show watts when doing this drill can be really fun too. It's amazing to see how much power even I can get from a really good push of the legs. I've had two actual rowing sessions recently and can tell that this drill and developing more leg strength is the way to go. I'm a believer!

    Love this Shane. Way tougher than it looks! Im ok locking my arms but im trying to drive through with the legs too much and pivot to 1 o' clock from the 11 o' clock position. Definitely gets you focussed on the leg drive at the start of the stroke

    Had hernia surgery Jan. 21 so no rowing for a few weeks. I feel I have never mastered the push so when I can return to the rower I am committing a month of daily going slow and finally getting the mechanics right and imbedded in my noggin and body. Thanks for being relentless on the proper mechanics!

    Thanks for this. What is your opinion on the the recovery in this drill. It doesn't appear that you were taking a slow recovery back to the start. I am thinking about timing. Would that be helpful to mention the slow recovery, so the chain still gets fed back into the machine?

    I always thought the cue to "pull" referred to the way the hip swing feels, as with a deadlift.

    Hey Shane...im not a puller with the rower...but my push isn't very powerful. Now..with that being said..my push is considerably better when I push with my toes. I've really been paying attention to this of late...and seems I push the hardest with my big toes....and mostly with the big joint that connects the big toe to the foot. For the most part my heels are down..but they aren't really where the power is coming from. I'm thinking this is why I totally suck at rowing...not to mention I'm only 4' 11". I really hope you have some thoughts and advice on this.

      Which are always spoken of as "how much can you pull." The hip swing makes it feel like a pull.

    Right now I'm doing rowing until I can safely go back to jiu jitsu. You have a pretty similar mindset like Chewjitsu, where you are both knowledgeable and the most important thing.........being positive

    On the paper. On the rower it's different story. 😁

    I have to disagree with you slightly. As well an the C2 I have ROWED a dinghy almost daily for years. Rowing the dinghy "properly" for me is a actuallybody and arms only drill. I practice for the dinghy by body and arms only on the C2. Taking the "catch" uses a quick swing started as the oars enter the water so the oars quickly accelerate past the boat speed. My legs are in almost straight and braced. On the C2 the timing only changes as I use the leg push to create the catch acceleration the hip swing does in the dinghy . The catch feels the same in the dinghy as the on a C2. The difference is the arms continue the acceleration in a dinghy and this makes sense as the oars are 2+ meters long so the leverage the arms can create with is great for continued acceleration.
    On the C2 you are completely correct, leg timing and your push is by far the most important.

    It is a push and pull sport. It’s as much of a myth to say it’s all from your legs as it is for some to say it’s how hard you pull. You have to do both to row well. But even if your legs are strong if you can’t pull hard and often you won’t be competitive.
    So down vote this one.

    I'm a comperitive Crossfit athlete I row alot! Great to build your engine and not destroy your body. You got some really good info... But get to the point. You talk too much.
