i think some may not get that this is basically a template for how to build a no-nonsense desk without all the whoop-de-doo shop equipment. if you want darker stain, then stain it darker. if you want to add drawers, then add drawers. if you want to doll it up so it looks like a french whore then do that as well. obviously, this design & finished product satisfied the needs of the client. this video is more about how to do a project of this scope with minimal tools. he only used a circular saw, jigsaw, clamps, tape and glue.
Good basic desk, but I feel like it gives off that "straight out of grandpa's garage" vibe, and may be too basic for someone who might need drawers and a more cleaner look.
I agree. He and I have different definitions of what "cool" looks like. I guess I'm just always surprised at the projects he churns out. His peers are usually challenging us to elevate our woodworking game (at least that's how I've gotten better over time). But these videos just remind me of those times when I had no idea what I was doing and just used angle brackets all the time.
I agree with the others, that this is a great how-to on building an L-shaped desk. We can add and remove design elements, as needed, but the overall concept remains.
vanessa dehart came here to say this. I've been away from the channel for almost a year and he's still finishing building grade pine plywood with clearcoat. Gotta move on to something nicer.
That’s the great thing about DIY though. He gives you the tools to make a great, solid desk, and you can put whatever finish you want on it. :) I’m making on for my husband’s birthday right now and plan to stain it dark to match our hardwood floors
Mike, we've always been a huge fan of your builds. However, one that that kills me is that you never peel off the bar code stickers!!! Haha nevertheless, great project
All Things Loc not if they get materials for free by saying Home Depot a lot. Also, these videos aren’t for people looking to make them. They’re for entertainment.
I think you're targeting the wrong audience with this. Executive, no. Budget functional need a desk now but can't afford a nice one DIY, YES. It has merit for the right audience though.
Great cost effective bare bones deal. I thought the reinforced inner sides made a ton of sense structurally and great for the look of the legs as well. The only recommendation I would make is edge banding the desktop with 1X2s not merely for the look but to protect the plywood edge.
Oak definitely has a tendency to chip out... anytime I forget to mask off my cut line I always kick myself... Agreed, That's what I dig about radiata pine plywood at HD, the face veneer is as thick as the ply cores
Modern Builds sorry Mike - at 8.16 you call this a blend of mid-century modern.... Maybe just stop using that term it is meaningless when you call everything that.
I like the project but something looked wrong with the apron. I’m not sure if having the grain run vertical would have been better to my eye or maybe staining the apron area. That’s just my eyes opinion. It looks great and I like the doilbling up for the top and the offset for the legs. It shows how much you can do with a few tools.
Damn dude, I've learned a ton from this channel and have loved to see your creativity in the past, but the recent stuff is just low effort, boring, and looks pretty bad even just compared to your own portfolio. I hope this is a phase you can come out of.
I was for a video on making an L-shaped desk out of plywood. Yours came up and I liked what I saw. PS What is the music around the 5.58 minute mark. It sounded familiar but I couldn't put a name to it.
So i have a question... I have made 2 L shaped desks for my wife and both of them have separated. If you can help I would love to hear what I am doing wrong
Solid build, dude! It kinda feels like it needs a little something to take it to the next level, but I get that this desk is still a part of the full studio build and doesn’t necessarily need to stand apart. Keep up the good work!
Don't let the haters get you down, Mike. This build was solid. This is like the old style of your videos that I always loved. Simple, easy, but looks good. I'm not a fan of all the wood look, but that's nothing some white paint couldn't fix!
Can you please build a chick modern double desk! The wife and I are stuck at home and we are both college students, we are thinking of building a gigantic desk and we dont know where to start.
Nice job, Mike! I recently built a serving tray with a continuous grain pattern along the outside, so satisfying, but definitely takes some mental capacity to understand where to cut!
after reading the comments I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought this looked cheap and silly. I mean... at least TRY to make it look professional, especially since you're calling it an "Executive Desk" Showing your age here young one... might want to learn what Executive means!
Oak plywood is still plywood! C'mon, Mike, if you're going to make furniture, branch-out (pun intended 😜) to using real wood/lumber. Also, what's with the 'only design' of Mid-century modern? This desk looks cheap, IMHO.
what -- no router used ? .... plus -- your taping and adding glue did not support the area where the glue was used -- combining the two wood together ,,,
Wow everyones so bitter! Relax. If you’re building this desk yourself then you’re more than welcome to stain, paint, even shit on it if you want. Thats not the look he was going for, this style is unique and actually really on trend right now.
Dad --- Son, can you come here please ... Kid -- Yeah Dad ... Dad -- Do you want to explain to me and your mother what we are looking at here ? Kid -- It's an executive maple desk dad .... I got the plans from RUclips .. do you like it ? *mom runs away crying* Dad -- So it is true .... Dammit son !!!... How long have you been smoking meth !?....
i love your videos but not a fan of the look of this desk, it looks unfinished
Thought the same thing. Looks like standard rough plywood...
Yeah, flat sawn oak plywood is really boring and nothing spectacular. Maybe if it was stained dark it would look better.
i think some may not get that this is basically a template for how to build a no-nonsense desk without all the whoop-de-doo shop equipment. if you want darker stain, then stain it darker. if you want to add drawers, then add drawers. if you want to doll it up so it looks like a french whore then do that as well. obviously, this design & finished product satisfied the needs of the client. this video is more about how to do a project of this scope with minimal tools. he only used a circular saw, jigsaw, clamps, tape and glue.

You can always add onto this design.
I agree. He and I have different definitions of what "cool" looks like.

Executive?! 😂😂😂 Of what? The company’s cleaning and sanitation department?
I came straight to the comments before watching the video. It's the comments I expected. These comments have been funny lately.
this would be cute if it was painted or stained honestly
vanessa dehart came here to say this. I've been away from the channel for almost a year and he's still finishing building grade pine plywood with clearcoat. Gotta move on to something nicer.
He said at 8:05 he couldn’t get the simple finish. I agree, but I understand if you can’t get the material then you can’t do it
For sure needs to be painted.
That’s the great thing about DIY though. He gives you the tools to make a great, solid desk, and you can put whatever finish you want on it. :) I’m making on for my husband’s birthday right now and plan to stain it dark to match our hardwood floors
liked everything about this video. this klutz is ready to tackle this project.
You say executive desk, I say future sewing desk ❤
Super excited to see RZMask back in the sponsor heap after it was missing last week!
What a wonderful Idea, keep up the good work. Farooq , London
That oak plywood looks really funny on camera. Or maybe in real life. Doesn’t look like the red oak plywood I just used.
Wow this plywood grain is incredibly ugly.
Sorry man, definitely not for me. Just way too busy.
I say, paint it black, stain the top, then poly.
Clean! 💕👍
Mike, we've always been a huge fan of your builds. However, one that that kills me is that you never peel off the bar code stickers!!! Haha nevertheless, great project
It’s not MCM or executive, for the cost you could do better with off the shelf IKEA.
All Things Loc not if they get materials for free by saying Home Depot a lot.
Also, these videos aren’t for people looking to make them. They’re for entertainment.
I loved that because I don't need all the complex tools to build a smart solution. Cheers!
I’ve always loved the look of plywood! I get how some wouldn’t like it but I absolutely love it.
usually not negative in my commenting but your videos seems to be a long commercial for different brands
Lol I think he’s just supporting the brands he loves to use.
I think you're targeting the wrong audience with this. Executive, no. Budget functional need a desk now but can't afford a nice one DIY, YES. It has merit for the right audience though.
Please start taking the stickers off your wood and metal
Thanks you give us achance madern builds never give up
2:01 "The key for getting a good straight cut with a jigsaw" meanwhile cutting a rounded inside corner
those bosch jigsaw blades are awesome, i use them for pretty much everything
No doubt!! The reverse cut ones are the bomb
That mask be hitting different in 2020
Great cost effective bare bones deal. I thought the reinforced inner sides made a ton of sense structurally and great for the look of the legs as well. The only recommendation I would make is edge banding the desktop with 1X2s not merely for the look but to protect the plywood edge.
I hate that home depot red oak plywood. The face veneers are so thin and splintery.
Oak definitely has a tendency to chip out... anytime I forget to mask off my cut line I always kick myself... Agreed, That's what I dig about radiata pine plywood at HD, the face veneer is as thick as the ply cores
Looks good
I'm hooked on continuous grain now.. Didn't think it would be so simple :) What technique's on your 'to-do' list??
I’m here early. Just waiting for the next Craftsman video.
Nicely done Mike! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred!
Not everything has to be labeled mid century modern lol
What??? 😂
Omni Media Group ~ especially since mid-century modern is really awful!
Modern Builds sorry Mike - at 8.16 you call this a blend of mid-century modern.... Maybe just stop using that term it is meaningless when you call everything that.
Modern Builds love your vids dude. Just giving you shit lol
@@omnimediagroup5761 stick to your guns man... dont cave in.
Appearance-wise, it's not my cup of tea. That said, pretty great craftsmanship! Keep the videos coming, man :)
Nice. I guess you have to build it in the room that it will be used in? It will be very difficult to move thru normal residential doorways.
Nicely done!
The plywood gives off a "building site" vibe.
Nice build
Wow I never in a million years would have thought that Andrew Schulz and Mike would be in a video
Yessss I’ve been waiting for this vid 🙏🏻
Killer vid mike 🔪🔥
Looks simply dope
I like the project but something looked wrong with the apron. I’m not sure if having the grain run vertical would have been better to my eye or maybe staining the apron area. This looks like shop furniture
Back to Ryobi? I thought you were #teamCraftsman
He already did an infomercial, er... video for them. He got that sponsorship money and swag.
@@Rocky1115 it's literally his job to ignoramus
Nice!!
Beautiful job. After the continous grain on the sides I was suprised that you didn't edge band the top.
Yeah... Looking at it now I think I'll add some when I get back to NY to finish up the podcast space
Exactly!
Damn dude, I've learned a ton from this channel and have loved to see your creativity in the past, but the recent stuff is just low effort, boring, and looks pretty bad even just compared to your own portfolio. I hope this is a phase you can come out of.
Andrew S, the boy
I'd be embarrassed putting this quality of work out. Especially for a client like Andrew. Have some pride.
I love that specific pattern of the wood grain, do agree with below comments that maybe some stain would make it a little sleeker.
Craft Bazaar 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏🇱🇰🇱🇰
First? Yessir! Love your work, Mike!
Making this with my brother in law for my husband’s birthday. Hope he loves it as much as I do!
Solid build, dude! It kinda feels like it needs a little something to take it to the next level, but I get that this desk is still a part of the full studio build and doesn’t necessarily need to stand apart. Keep up the good work!
meh, look cheap imo. not your best.
It looks like a "my first try at furniture" build that should never leave the shop. And yet he got paid for it
Yes! Andrew Schulz!
Love the table!
Always learned a lot from your videos, your creativity is out of the chart!! Keep up the good work!!
nice and simple! good job!!
Nothing screams "quality" like visible plywood edges. At least run a strip of the oak that you used for the legs along that edge to clean it up a bit.
Sam Anderson I like the cool striping the plywood edges have. Not for everyone but definitely for som people!
6:42 - couldn't be bothered to remove the label. Sorry for my raging OCD. Nice desk! Cheers, C.
It takes the character away. 😂🤣
he couldn't be bothered to make a finished product... why would it suprise you that he left the sticker on during glue up!!
Thanks for the video. What are the dimensions you choose for the top?
how much roughly does a project like this cost?
I love the base for it but I think I’d like to see the top painted a bright white or something
That's what I was thinking. The plywood grain is cool, but the top needs to pop a little more.
Easy fix for everyone commenting on the wood grain. Choose your own...
Don't let the haters get you down, Mike. This build was solid. This is like the old style of your videos that I always loved. Simple, easy, but looks good. I'm not a fan of all the wood look, but that's nothing some white paint couldn't fix!
Can you make a customize drafting table with hidden drawer & lamp or lights for architect. Thanks
the desk looks like upscaled default textured video game desks
looks cheap af
Yeesh who has time to comment how much they don’t like this. The dude builds well, he can’t hit a home run every time. This was a great video.
Can you please build a chick modern double desk! The wife and I are stuck at home and we are both college students, we are thinking of building a gigantic desk and we dont know where to start.
Spoiler Alert. Andrew Schulz has a new studio.
dick talk!
@@Therealsourdiesel dick segment!
how tall dose it sit for example my currant desk is at 2 and a half feet tall is it anywhere close to that height?
The Plywood looks really cool. I like what you have done with it.
Thanks Adam
Nice job, Mike! I recently built a serving tray with a continuous grain pattern along the outside, so satisfying, but definitely takes some mental capacity to understand where to cut!
For sure!! worth it though :)
For red oak it really looks like fir plywood.
Andrew Schultz!? He's super funny! 😂
How would you add a shelf to this? On the inside?
simple yet elegant. Nicely done. I feel the majority of the commenters have been too harsh. For an inexpensive DIY desk I think it looks fantastic.
after reading the comments I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought this looked cheap and silly. I mean... at least TRY to make it look professional, especially since you're calling it an "Executive Desk" Showing your age here young one... might want to learn what Executive means!
Think of "executive" as style of corner desk rather than a question of quality of materials.
I love the simplicity of the build. End result isnt really for me but hey, I didnt ask for it either. Great video nonetheless
Ben!
Oak plywood is still plywood! C'mon, Mike, if you're going to make furniture, branch-out (pun intended 😜) to using real wood/lumber. Also, what's with the 'only design' of Mid-century modern? This desk looks cheap, IMHO.
Great idea and beautiful finish well done 👍 I am Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 Woodworking youtuber
Would've been nice with a painted base and a nice stain for the top the polyurethane kinda killed this build
You are on fire! Nice build.
Thanks so much!!
3:10 omfg he's adorable
Scottsbrown could be fired if working a project w/o dust collector.. but i like your technic w/minimalist tools, bravo
no edge banding?
Probably would of been better with a painted base. Feels like it is too much of a very busy large grain. Techniques with simple tools are nice though.
Love your videos
Looks great and simple! I'm currently building a large desk with built ins for my wife's office. Using maple plywood from Lowes.
Awesome!! Good luck with it :)
what -- no router used ? ....
plus -- your taping and adding glue did not support the area where the glue was used -- combining the two wood together ,,,
Doesn’t the wood move in this piece and will lead to cracks and curved boards?
its plywood. do you even woodwork?
Plywood doesn't expand and contract. If it were solid wood it would need to be attached differently
Plz Make a full table for computer
Needs finish trim around table top
Andrew Schultz of Project 86??
Wow everyones so bitter! Relax. If you’re building this desk yourself then you’re more than welcome to stain, paint, even shit on it if you want. Thats not the look he was going for, this style is unique and actually really on trend right now.
