It's runs on an AC induction motors and AC motors rotate at the frequency of the power source. There is a frequency drive that changes the line frequency higher to make the motor go faster. The sound is the frequency of the motor's power supply changing.

An induction motor does not run at the power source frequency. Also, switching frequency of the power electronics is not the same as the power source frequency ;)

      I think your wrong here.
The AC is rectified to DC then fed into a 3 phase inverter to power the AC traction motors

You know, Taurus is actually a brand of the ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen) for the Siemens ES64U2. Thus, the locomotive in the video (which is obviously owned by the DB [Deutsche Bahn]) is no Taurus. The DB calls them BR 182. (Of course, BR 182, Taurus and Siemens ES64U2 are just different names for the same model of locomotive.)

No. These things are a joke. Come to North America where we run trains 3 miles long weighing up to 20,000 tons powered by half a dozen locomotives that aren't an embarrassing eyesore and an insult to one's ears.

@@keithode1737 North American train service and transport infrastructure overall is an absolute embarrassment, especially for a such a rich corner of the world. Is an American pick-up truck better than a Mercedes just because it's bigger? Might carry more cargo, and sure, that's a plus, but overall I would disagree.

I hope this gives some clarifcation: The overhead line voltage is rectified into Direct Current (DC). Between the DC stage and the traction motor is an inverter. This inverter feeds the traction motor with a pulse-shaped voltage. This is because the power-semiconductors in the DC to AC inverter can only change between conducting and not-conducting (on or off). By applying pulse-width modulation to the on/off state of the semiconductors, voltages are simulated that result in a traction-motor current as if the motor was connected to a "normal" three phase AC supply from a grid. It is true that the rotational speed of the motor is determined by the (simulated) frequency of the supply voltage/current. During the acceleration, not only the frequency of the voltage has to change, but also the magnitude. (This is to keep the magnetic fieldstrength in the motor roughly constant). This is also done by modifying the pulse-pattern. All this "modulated-pulsing" can result in the sounds like in this video. :-) In recent years big advancements in power-semiconductor technology were made: from the thyristor, to the Gate turn-off thyristor, to the IGBT. The advantage of this all is that the robust three-phase AC induction motor can be used, instead of a motor with a commutator and a complicated armature winding.
