    I first saw Siemens Taurus on the cover of my high school physics textbook. It's like love at first sight. I didn't know who manufactured or operated them, or how's the performance, but i already know it's a beautiful and marvellous piece of engineering.

    Looks like 221.8 MPH to me. Very impressive. Handsome locomotive. An ES 64 version (ACS-64) is coming to America in 2013 for Amtrak on the northeast corridor to replace the aging 30 year old 7000 horsepower AEM-7 toasters and reported unreliable HHP-8s. The ACS 64 is believed to have 8,600 horsepower with regenerative braking. This puts power back on the supply system (catenary).

      I think thats the PZB Vmax. The Trains Vmax is at 230km/h. The PZB Vmax just means that after that speed they need to use the LZB Saftey System instead of hte PZB.

    @gabzos: this test was done with a standard version of the "taurus" on a standard rail track, hence the record for serial production trains.
    the tgv that did 547kph was tuned and ran on specially prepared tracks...

      This was an high speed line btw and the speed record of the tgv in 2007 world record was 574.8 km/h

    MPH or KPH recently doesn't matter, both loco (Taurus) and train (TGV) both went faster, in one case MUCH faster than a formula 1 racer. Remarkable!

    You're right, of course. I don't know what I was thinking. Even my vacuum cleaner has a 2 kW motor, so 6,3 kW would probably not be enough for a locomotive. :D

      The TGV (a train set) was heavily tuned, this is just a standard locomotive. The highest untuned non maglev train set is the Siemens Velaro (chinese version) based on the ICE 3.

    @superdau It was designed mainly for pulling very heavy freight trains for the ÖBB. But as it is so universal it is also used for passenger trains.

    Wie krank das einfach is dass Menschen nur mit dem was sie beim buddeln inna Erde gefunden haben, solche Teile gebastelt haben :D Ich mein die Lok besteht aus nen paar Erzen, vermutlich Rohölprodukten und ein paar Nichtmetallen.

    It is 6,4MW and they raised it to 7,3MW listen from 1:20 to 1:24 they say 7,3 Mega Watt, the normal power is 6400kW. 6,4kW or 7,3 kW is not much for a motor, definetly for a locomotive. I worked with 1kW motors and they are very small. quote "ES 64 U4 = EuroSprinter, 6400 kW, multi-purpose (universal), multi-system (15kV/25kV AC + 1,5kV/3kV DC) " from railcolor.

    And only modification that was made is the removal of wipers, as they would otherwise fly off at such high speed. Tauruses are built for 230km/h or (142.91mph)

    Sorry, someone else pointed out my error regarding the units. Of course, you were correctly using MW as the unit. I don't know what I was thinking. A locomotive would be ridicuously underpowered with a 6,3 kW motor. :D

    Wäre sie aerodynamisch nochmal schneller, wenn man zumindest noch zwei zusätzliche Wägen ran hängte, im Sinne von Länge läuft oder würden in diesem Fall Reibungsverluste, Lager- und Rollwiderstände schwerer zu Buche schlagen als es aerodynamischen Vorteil brächte? Oder ist es bei dem Querschnitt/Länge-Verhältnis bereits ab einer Loklänge irrelevant. Irritierend auch, dass eine solch schnelle Lok nicht aerodynamischer verkleidet ist.

      Bitte nicht vergessen, das die vorteilhafte Frontgestaltung bei einer Lok dann beidseitig sein muss, weil sie in beide Richtungen fährt. Anders als bei den Triebköpfen der Triebzüge... Was man "vorne" gewinnt, verliert man dann "hinten" bei dem Übegang zum Wagenpark...

    the French locomotives were modified heavily for the record attempt, this one was totally unmodified (unlike most engines/trainsets which attempt speed records), they could've grabbed another of the same class and did it if they wanted to.

    Well, maybe consider putting them on HS lines where the speed of the trains could potentially be increased to 250 or 300km/h. I think it'd do just fine on a HSL

    Die 230 km/h resultieren aus diversen Sicherheitsvorschriften und Zulassungsbedingungen. Technisch geht wesentlich mehr.

      Thats not true. It has all systems to be allowed to pull freight + a universal screw coupler which freight and coaches use. Its a universal locomotive that can pull anything.

    This is what they had on the locomotive: "V 3"
    This means they knew they were going to reach some speed in the 300km+ range, they just didn't know what speed exactly.

    it is only 26 km h more than the record achieved in 1955 with two different models of french locomotives. At the time the locomotives pulling four cars. There is only one car ... it is not so extraordinary that!!
    France has a tendency of swapping to power bogies with larger drivers under the lok, as well as overvolting the line and changing power equipment to handle the higher line voltage. Think of it as overclocking, in a sense. This Taurus was unovervolted and unmodified when it ran, yes with less weight, but not modified at all.

    don't worry, I also applause the Eurosprinter performance ! and I really prefer the comfort in the ICE trains ! for example, I prefer to take an Interregio during 7 hours instead of break my back on a tgv seat for 4 hours !

    Das ist wirklich erstaunlich denn die Taurus ist soweit ich weiß auf 230 km/h vmax zugelassen und der angehängte wagen auf 200. da muss der verschleiß bei dieser rekordfahrt doch ordentlich gewesen sein.

    Not sure what you're trying to say.
    Regular power is 6,4 kW (not MW, that would be a bit much for a locomotive). They raised it to 7,3 kW for the world speed record.

      It was modified a tiny bit so it could run faster than 230km/h. This was one part that needed to be modifed

      Yes it was Alstom. I think it was a V-150, but it wasn't a standard one. It was modified to run with double the power that the standard V150 had, and had larger wheels.

      The Taurus record did come first, in September 2006. The French (Alstom) record was set on the 3rd April 2007.
      Also the Taurus train (that set the record in this video) was unmodified, the Alstom train wasn't.

      Jan LP Da die Anzeige halbe km/h mutmaßlich rundet, kann man erst bei angezeigten 358 km/h (also einer tatsächlichen Geschwindigkeit von >= 357,5 km/h) davon ausgehen, dass man tatsächlich 357 km/h erreicht hat. Ansonsten könnten es bei angezeigeten 357 km/h ja auch nur tatsächliche 356,5 km/h gewesen sein. Mal unterstellt, dass die Anzeige absolut genau geht. Was eher unwahrscheinlich ist, aber egal.

    Die Lok hätte auch mehr geschafft
    man sieht auch das sie es schafft bei 4:10 springt die Anzeige noch auf 358 km/h während die Kamera weggedreht wird
    naja die 357 km/h wahren halt schon so geplant

    1) Dir scheint nicht klar zu sein, dass ein Sprecher keinen Einfluss auf den Inhalt des Gesprochenen hat. Der liest, was man ihm vorlegt.
    2) Was ist Deiner Meinung nach so falsch an der Aussage? Es dürfte eine Tatsache sein, dass der Geräuschpegel mit zunehmender Geschwindigkeit steigt. Das Wort "analog" ist an dieser Stelle allerdings ungenau (und eigentlich überflüssig).
