Making $35,000 Bonsai Scissors

- When it comes to Japanese craftsmanship, knives often get all the glory. But in the city of Sakai, where traditional metalwork goes back centuries, there is one man who has built his legacy on something a little different. Master blacksmith Yasuhiro Hirakawa is the only traditional scissor maker left in Japan. Using ancient methods, Hirakawa’s legendary scissors can take four times longer to forge than a traditional knife. To buy one of his creations can set you back a hefty amount-his most expensive pair of scissors cost $35,000. For bonsai craftsmen like Masakazu Yoshikawa, however, it’s a small price to pay for the chance to work with the highest quality tools.

@@vlusky_husky No, I don't have bonsai scissors. I'm 75 and a modelship maker. I have tools, specialized tools where each serves one single situation or purpose.. When I started, I had the same types of tools but very cheap and ordinary, only three or four that served for all the same purposes. When I discovered there were ultra specialized tools and one for each job, I bought them one by one at an inflated price 3 or 4 times higher than the cheap ones (but not 16,000 times the price). I also realized that the real reason I wanted them was hubris, and for the pride and pleasure of 'having them'. I feel like Japan is the only country where scissor crafter and bonsai master could be actual careers.
Nope. There are scissor makers all over the world, especially in Europe. The scissors shown in this video, although very nice, are ABSOLUTELY overpriced in every way. There are other “bespoke” handmade scissors out there for way less. 80$ to 1000$. There is a reason he will be going out of business soon.
@@AlexanderMason1 the only reason he will go out of business is of old age. I don’t think you realise how difficult it is to make scissors from absolute scratch which I doubt the europeans are able to do. @@valebliz Having done some woodworking and blacksmithing as a hobby, and reading up on what the Japanese did in both those areas, I totally agree with you. The Japanese refuse to let go of old ways and romanticize them, and some in the west buy into it. E.g. Japanese refused to transition to blast furnaces for hundreds of years after they were available, so they spent hundreds of years doing a lot more labour intensive processes to work steel to produce blades and tools of equal (not better) quality to those coming out of other countries.

Show yourself out of the building.
IMO, the Japanese make a science out of everything. He probably had to watch his master 10 years before he was allowed to try to make a pair himself. Sure, they are masters, but often I think that the effort is not necessary for a pair of scissors, more just because of tradition.
Right? And I think that the Bonsai craftsman probably heard about the scissors from someone else, so while they are actually incredibly well made, he buys them because it’s part of the tradition. I’m sure the $35,000 scissors are amazingly well made, but I highly doubt you can’t find scissors that do just as well for maybe a 10th of the cost.
People don't need to buy $400,000 Rolls, a Volkswagen a tenth of its price will just do fine.
the japanese make an art out of everything. The germans make a science out of everything. They have norms for literally everything.
Was going to say in Japan they make a craft out of everything... craftsmanship is highly revered and one dedicates their life or family towards it be it a pair of scissors, bonsai , or Japanese Italian food...was amazed to see how much seriousness was placed in just the act of buying the pair of scissors... an hour talk... 1/2 a year to 1 year of deliberation/ research. Wow.
I think if you think this then I think you’re missing the point

The woman is incredulous, outraged, and asks how that’s even possible given it only took him 5 minutes. Picasso looks up and, without missing a beat, says: “No, madam, it took me my whole life.”

I can understand craft and art for many things, swords, watches, knives, but this to me is neither of those. You simply can't take just anything and spend a long time and say your effort is worth ¥4,000,000. But hey if people are buying then I guess I'm wrong.
I bought one of these for 12,000 INR. One of the things I observed was that these haven't corroded or tarnished even a bit after around 3 years of hard-core use
Do you also use them for bonsai?
Probably because you look after them after every use because they cost more than my car
I’ve got scissors that I bought at the dollar store that lasted me 10 years until I lost them...
Buy yourself some $25 (scratch that, they are $18.99 on amazon!!) joyce chen scissors (red handles). that's like infant level scissor game. they sell em on amazon. it'll change your life. and imagine, them joints are just the entry level. like ford pinto type joints.
12.000 Indonesian rupiahs is less than 1$

Or sell scissors, that would make me a very rich man.

Jacob Sheldon maybe if you’ve got half a century to perfect making them 😉

Approximately 35,000 yes extra (jk)

Naruto?
Nope
uchiha
Thomas J I was thinking Naruto to because of "Sasuke" the name but it's pronounced Sa-su-ke instead of how Naruto says Sasuke
Daniel Alkarreeuhh lol it’s still pronounced “saskay” the narrator just doesn’t pronounce it correctly
its just the narrator that mispronounces it, the bonsai cutter says it just fine
I just bought an 18-piece scissor pack at IKEA for $3.49!

I bought a blank canvas and drew a red dot in the middle for 5$ instead of 1 million, could you believe it?
I love the fact that your name is Paradox. What a golden comment! xD

The true skill here is not the making of the scissors but convincing someone your scissors are worth the price.
If you are only hand made scissor maker in entire Japan I think that justifies the price a bit.
@@hahhuli not really, hand made means nothing when you can buy a better pair of mass produced shears for far less.

“It’s necessary to use GOOD scissors.”
Okay so $30,000 is the base price for good scissors to cut pine needles?
Yes. I mean, it’s not easy to grow a bonsai tree and he said that the best scissors can make the best cut as to not damage the tree. One mistake and that whole bonsai tree can turn into a demorphed beast.
@@NiqIce I believe that, it seems like a very delicate hobby that takes an immense amount of care...$30,000 dollars though??!!? 1/3 of that is still astronomically high
@@johnwayne6654 Bonsai trees are expensive. Also, the man sells the tree, it’s not a hobby
If a robber come to his place, the only items that missing are just some mobile phone, TV, stereo etc... but not one of those super scissors xD
Alamda Ali true haha
Because that robber would not have the scamming skills like this old man has to sell $35,000 scissors.
Wow now i can sell my house to buy a pair of scissors just so i can cut trees in other peoples gardens.
Well a bonsai does cost a hella lot of money; the most expensive bonsai that was bought is about 1.3million dollars
just curious where do you live to have a house thats worth 32K
