I know a guy who once paid to have his entire car painted with this method (hand-rubbed carbon lacquer). It was the best looking black paint job I've ever seen. The car was a '57 Chevy Belair.
The talent, dedication, and patience are remarkable! I love seeing all the time-honored techniques still being used. Thank you for sharing all these amazing craftspeople with the world!
@bashkillszombies They may not have had modern mirrors made of glass with silver back coating but they did have this kind of mirror, as well as polished metal ones. A mirror is part of the Sacred Regalia of the Japanese imperial family, and dates back to Emperor Jimmu who ascended to the throne circa 600 BCE. I'd call that "ancient."
@@bashkillszombies wtf, one of their sacred national treasures is a mirror made of bronze that predates western contact and influence. It was likely that mirror in Japan making originated from China, who made mirrors as early as 11 BCE.
Thank you again! I watched closely how he applied that paint coat on top and when he turned it as he did it, I tried that on a round piece of cardboard I put in my small cans on top of shredded paper and was amazed. The coating is much smoother and it spread out better. I watched closely how he painted the outside rim. I’m going to try to be neater when I do outside of my cans turning it as I do to make it smoother like he did his rim instead of my usual slopping on paint. A small thing to see but a big improvement on my things when I try. I’m always learning something new that I can adapt to what I do watching.
The smoothing is achieved with the wet sanding, if you look after his is dried initially it is very rough and uneven until he sands it then scrapes it rather than brushing
I love the passion they have when doing things, thank you very much for making these videos and letting us see a little of how things are done, love from Mexico ❤❤❤
yea if u have wear gloves, then u should prob be wearing a respirator or n95 mask. even if room is properly ventilated it wont catch all particulate in time; especially when you’re that close to spraying the asset.
The luxury and allure of Japanese crafts is based on how well a simple but well contrasted piece can be mesmerizing. It screams class. It's purity. You can almost feel the hand's touch in the creation.
Amazing work! As a craftsman myself (leather for 41yrs) I enjoy watching others in different mediums, and as such I do wish there was more details given in the process, i.e. how many coats of paint and lacquer. At the end some object like a flower in front of the mirror to show how reflective it is. Keep up the beautiful work!
Central heating is not as common in Japan and often buildings aren't well insulated. Space heaters are still regularly used. There is also interesting heaters unique to Japan like a "Kotatsu Table" which is like a floor table with a heater underneath and blanket skirt around it so your legs stay warm.

I love watching artists. Although I don’t do what they do, I try things for my own art hobby. It’s good to be observant if the watcher is a hobby crafter to improve or change or try. I’m sure these artists are glad that some of us pay particular interest because we do art too. I watched one artist who was working with paper. Can’t remember if it was here or another video from another group of artists. I work with paper. They did something to get rid of wrinkles. I watched and tried it and it solved a paper wrinkle problem I couldn’t figure out how to do for years. The artists I’ve seen here and other places are very patient as they do things. I tend to rush so watching their patience is teaching me more patience. To non artists all that means nothing. To me, it means everything. I watch, I learn, I try to apply. And to say hey you helped in an area I think is good feedback as I try things to put to actual use rather than just being an observer.
Hmm, some of the phrases are kinda there, but not quite. 2nd process: Carve the base. -> "smooth the base " or "resurface the primer layer" 5th process: Scrape the surface -> "sand the surface" or "wet sand the paint layer"

It is beautiful and I appreciate your work! I must ask though why the uneven gold portion? Personally It upsets my sense of balance and symmetry. I was just wondering if this is a traditional way of making them, or just the artists creative choice? Beautiful work though! ❤
It’s not a mirror. It’s just a little wheel of wood highly polished. Anything painted and polished like this gives a reflection. This is not highly skilled nor is it a mirror. No wonder he didn’t show his “mirror”. This video is nonsense.
The lax PPE is honestly kind of stressful 😭 Mostly watching him spray without both ventilation and a mask for potential fume risks. This is super cool but my god everyone please wear your personal protection equipment!! That way you can create beautiful art for longer. ☺️

In Japan, mirrors have been sacred since ancient times.
It takes patience to create a mirror.
It's also nice with the black mirror.
woooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww sacred? oh golly!
They didn't have mirrors until western contact. So it's not that ancient.
