  • What I Eat *Dietary Staples for Health & Vitality...
*Content is for informational and/or entertainment purposes only and should not be considered a substitute for professional medical advice or consultation with healthcare professionals.
I am merely sharing some of my dietary staples and favorite foods with the purpose of encouraging you to take responsibility for your own health and make healthier choices. Diet being a personal choice that involves so many variables, this will look different for everyone (what you elect to include and exclude). Always think independently and critically.
I eat many other foods besides those featured. (Notably excluded are sardines, for example, which I have made a dedicated video on in the past & can be found on my channel.) My aim with this video was simply to spotlight my "champion foods" and review their benefits.

I've noticed most of the heath channels or people I see focus on what foods help to loose weight, gain muscle, essentially look good. I love that you focus on health and vitality in a way that isn't superficial. You can look pretty good and still feel like crap. I'm really taking notes and trying to learn how to maintain good health for longevity. Hopefully I'll get on your level someday!

  • @spacerae191

This is a really solid list. My diet includes most of these foods and I can vouch for the benefits of including them in your diet. Some other foods I’ve found considerably bolstered my appearance and vitality include:
-Sea vegetables. My skin always looks plump, pore-less, and glowy the day after consuming a seaweed rich meal. I get it in via soups made with Kombu dashi and salads made with wakame, dulse, arame etc… Consume in moderation as there is a risk of heavy metal toxicity.
    -Organic natto
    -Brazil nuts
    -Frozen organic wild blueberries
-Organic pasture raised whole milk A2 kefir and yogurt from Alexandre farms and Bellwether farms respectively. I’m also fond of Raw farms goat kefir but production has been on hold this past year unfortunately.
    -Beets
    -Papaya
    -Celery
    -Radishes
-Greens i.e. watercress, kale, purslane, arugula etc..
-Tinned wild caught fish specifically sardines, cod liver, mackerel, anchovies, and occasionally tuna.
-Very dark chocolate, less sugar is ideal. EVOLVED makes an unsweetened variety stuffed with coconut butter that’s really delicious.
-Anti-inflammatory and glucose regulating herbs, spices, and rhizomes i.e. ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, rosemary, marjoram, mint, nigella seeds, thyme, lemongrass etc…
    -Alliums
-Mushrooms. My local Korean market sells fresh maitake, shiitake, beech, and oyster which offer a variety of different benefits. I also occasionally supplement with Reishi tea.
-Sprouts and microgreens. Cheap and easy to grow at home. You can even sprout some of the whole spices, grains, and pulses kicking around your pantry if you don’t want to spend extra money on seeds.
Most importantly though is modulating sugar intake and insulin. You can eat all the right foods but I’ve found nothing precipitates inflammation, fatigue, mood swings, and premature aging quite as effectively as a blood glucose spike. Im not diabetic but learning a to keep my blood glucose stable and reduce excess sugar intake in general has had the most positive impact.

Thanks for sharing these. I thought for sure you'd mention sardines. The alaskan berries we consume have lots of antioxidants, for instance, the low bush cranberries have double the amount compared to pomegranates, and our blueberries have triple the amount compared to store bought blueberries.
    I'm so grateful that you're here !

I know it’s my gut that needs to be fixed but I struggle so badly with finding foods that are filling and tasty, also affordability is super important as well. You’re salads are delicious! I stumbled across Jen's podcast recently. The podcast was done about 2 years ago as I recall on dealing with psoriasis using a salad with salmon, ginger, scallions, etc. I appreciate her unassuming nature, and (I'm paraphrasing) "What works for me may not work for you.. " attitude.
Interesting list. Personally, I'm an ovo-pescatarian, though I only eat eggs when I go out for breakfast. Definitely will try the oysters. I can attest to green tea. This along with ground flax/chia seeds and blueberries have really been beneficial for me. I tend to use avocado oil when cooking due to the higher smoke point versus extra virgin olive oil, but Jen didn't say she cooked with it, and I'm glad she mentioned it helps nutrient absorption on salads. I think that liver is a bit tricky, though she mentioned using very little. Eggs too can be tricky (see Zoe podcasts). It's the cholesterol, which your body makes anyway; too much=cardiovascular disease. But it could be a two edged sword, maybe benefitting hair/skin amongst other areas, but shortening life/health span for many. A hack on potatoes besides cooling (one of my sin foods is hot boiled potatoes with butter/vegan substitute, salsa, kimchi & sardines) is to either eat some protein/fat before eating it and/or adding some vinegar (not a big fan of cold potatoes); you can also do this hack on oatmeal or anything else that might spike your insulin (fats/proteins). Also, if you can only get one thing organic, highly suggest coffee: it's greatly sprayed and the beneficial compounds are much higher in organic versus non-organic.
Jennifer is an excellent source for those dealing with psoriasis or for people that want radiant hair & beautiful skin. Suggest people also check out Zoe & Nutrition Made Simple for additional nutritional information. Miche is also good. And like Jen would suggest, experimenting to see what works for you.

I love bone broth as well, but I just read about potential danger in it containing lead. Lead is apparently stored in bones so a long simmering broth could cause it to leach into the broth. The suggestion was 'carcass' broth, as you would use to make soup.. but then you're not getting the good stuff that only happens after several hours.. I don't know, I only just came across this without delving further yet, but I just wanted to mention this in case it was something you'd like to look into for yourself if you felt it was important.

You might want to say sweet potato instead of potato... I saw you peel off the skin in the old video but that part is nutritious.
I wish I could eat oysters...they are so good but always get me sick the next day. (I take zinc supplement every day maybe that's why I don't have gray hair)

Thanks for this :) was very helpful.
Personally, I prefer guayusa over green tea, and if not that then white peony tea is my next favorite (white peony is actually the same plant as green tea). I find those to be much better than green tea in a few areas, including antioxidants. Guayusa has the advantage of having no tannins (unlike tea in general), and also caffeine content comparable to coffee, while at the same time contains a very high amount of theanine to counteract any negative effects from the caffeine (unlike coffee).

Tealyra is superb. I would feel confident getting from Mountain Rose Herbs as well.

Maybe one of the wisest piece of advise available for beauty & health. In France, we rarely eat fermented food except for fermented cabbage and turnip, but we tend to eat (I am talking about traditionnal way of eating) raw cheese in the morning, packed with good bacterias and enzymes, organ meat and raw oysters of course, our olive oil (French olive oil is the most expensive in the world: tiny production) is so packed with polyphenols that we call it sometimes "oliphenols", duck fat is also a big thing in our country, as well as bone broth, our elders used to eat the bone marrow too, the only non-French products I consume is green tea and rooibos (packed with anti-oxydants as well), sometimes avocados but my consumption of duck or goose fat is such that it does not make much difference. Although our traditionnal diet is very high in fat, we remain in the top 10 longest living nations in the world (and it has NOTHING to do with wine, traditionnaly most French in the old days drank home made ciders, wine or champagne were for celebrations).

I need these oyster benefits to happen to me! Ive eaten a can every day for over ten years and my hair sucks. I have a severe chronic illness and just had a long hospital stay this year so I know that is the biggest factor. I still love the taste of oysters (smoked not raw).

Hair health is not just about diet but how you treat your hair. E.g. do you wash it enough, oil the hair, do scalp massage, sleep wearing a bonnet etc etc.

There are not a lot boiled oysters I see online, most are smoked or raw. That's okay too?

  • @SleeplessinOC

Great video Jen but a word of caution that I have learned from a nutritionist /biochemist: it is not advisable to be consuming large amounts of organ meats such as liver because of high vitamin D content . Though we need vitamin D, in large amounts it can actually be detrimental because vitamin D is actually a hormone. And hormones are what she calls nuclear receptors meaning they are so small they can penetrate the cell plasma and actually access the DNA which is normally highly protected . And depending on where on the DNA it hits , it can cause mutation , some leading to cancer as a result .

What do you mean by large amounts?

    • @SleeplessinOC
      @SleeplessinOC 5 месяцев назад

@@treshcoon1824 hi there , the nutritionist did not specify what is a “large amount “ but to put it concisely , she does not recommend supplementing nor eating organ meats , as a way to get vitamin D. I think she believes getting it from vegetables and from the sun is the “safest” way to get it although I still do take 1,000 IU a day with a vitamin K2 since I am not really able to easily prepare and eat vegetables (semi-homeless ) . Sorry I couldn’t be more specific but I would highly recommend you go explore her website and listen to the interviews she’s done under the podcasts option under her menu on her site. Her name is k aren h urd . I have to write it like that because sometimes my comments don’t show up and I wonder if it’s because I type certain words or names . Such a wealth of knowledge and not your typical nutritionist that usually say all the same things (not saying they aren’t extremely capable but I think they are missing a few key things) .
