Blue? 100% felt like it would happen anyway, they did her redemption in a reasonable way. She was always the most reasonable and sympathetic Diamond who clearly was going to side with pink lasagna no matter what.
Yellow? I'm half and half on this one, even though "don't use your powers on me" got me good. Feel like it should have taken a bit longer with her, but I like how they did handle it for her falling in line so quickly after blue. Blue being yellows weak spot was cute.
White? Lmao nawwwwww fam she should absolutely not have been. At least not this quickly. Maybe at the end of season 6, MAYBE.

The thing is though, they've been going for a LONG time. They're at the point where Cartoon Network could decide any season is the last season. It's rare for a show to run that long on a kids' channel. If they hadn't done it that way and CN had decided "nope, you're not getting another season" the show would have ended with no conclusion. It's a tough balance to strike.

That is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. That took literally decades of times before relations with those countries were improved. And we dropped two atomic bombs on Japan. There are people still suffering from the radiation of that to this day. Just because it can happen doesn't mean it should happen in should a rushed manner.

    • @lupinforestgreen7614
      @lupinforestgreen7614 5 лет назад +19

I feel the issue is a little complex. They didn't see it as genocide. They didn't give any more thought to it than we do about raising livestock for slaughter or mowing our lawns even though animals are capable of fear and the smell of cut grass is essentially the plant equivalent of agonized screams. If the Diamonds are evil because they don't treat other forms of life as sentient or as valuable as themselves, aren't we guilty of the same sin as well? Pink was essentially the Gem equivalent of a hippie, and any suggestions she might have made about organic life having any value were probably as ridiculous to them as a hardcore vegan suggesting we all live off chickpeas and tofu sounds to the average individual.
The message the show has been pushing, by and large, is empathy for your own kind. Even Steven carved out a pumpkin, in front of Pumpkin, no less.
Empathy for 'lesser lifeforms'? That's a little muddy. The show is, I think, implying the Diamonds are going to attempt to be better towards their own people. But it's unlikely they've learned that other life forms deserve respect as well. They may continue colonizing as before. This is something I feel future seasons could explore.
That aside, what could even be done about their previous colonies? Even if they regret it, they can't change or erase it, and there's no one to make restitution or answer to. Those worlds are as dead as Amethyst's Kindergarten, and all their life with them. Guilt is more or less the only consequence they could possibly face at this point, hopefully fueling a newfound appreciation for other forms of life, which in turn would prompt them to change the way they colonize---by working with indigenous life, or by artificially constructing their own worlds so they're not disrupting existing ones. They can't go back. They can't right the wrong they've done. They can only try to change for the better, and move forward.

It's complicated in that they aren't good guys, they are just no longer the villains towards the main cast.
If this was the real world it would be like a child of a dictator's family runs away to a country they are fond of that is under the dictator's control and frees it, years later that family member's child returns to get help for those suffering in the country that was freed, the other family members see how the dictatorship has hurt their own family, the dictator is eventually convinced how their perfect dictatorship isn't perfect so they give the help the child asks for.
The dictatorship doesn't end, it just improves the quality of living for those under it's rule.

They're not though. They're not antagonists towards the crystal gems anymore, but theres still thousands and millions of years of their conquest all over the universe. Planets and species wiped out, on top of the fact that theres still a matter of the newly uncorrupted gems and all the shattered gens forced together for the cluster, theres bound to be some left over hate, and I feel like itd be very very weak writing if ALL the gems were just cool with it "oh they're not our enemies anymore and u were pink diamond all along? Ok!" Like, there could be a break of trust from all the gems who just got uncorrupted, so I dont think the diamonds r redeemed right now, rather, they r turning over a new leaf.

Then the homeworld gems may feel betrayed that their Diamond swayed the war in the crystal gems favor and was against them from the start

Blue Diamond's redemption was 100% planted into the overarching storyline since the very beginning, and into her character, and because of that her redemption was very satisfying and felt like something that needed I happen.
Yellow's redemption on the other hand did seem a bit more rushed than Blue's, as only a few minutes before her redemption she was still in that same negative headspace. However thinking of the redemption as something Blue drew her towards instead of Steven, makes a lot more sense for her character. Blue was always Yellow's weakness, and she always cared about Blue much more than Rose or Pink Diamond. Therefore her redemption wasn't so bad in the end.
Then there's White, the grand and supreme literally head of Homeworld. Since the very mention/showing of the diamonds, it was clear than in some way shape or form, White was significantly better, or more threatening than the other Diamonds. This was shown in her owning the most colonies, her holding the largest colony (Homeworld), her being the largest Diamond, and her being left a mystery by almost every gem up until she was ready to be shown. I felt like White's character was extremely interesting since the first moment you got a glimpse of her; everything from her design to her personality was completely unlike anything we've seen up until that point. It's not that her redemption doesn't make sense, because it does. It's just that for such an extremely powerful character in size, ranking, mind, and just raw power to be rendered harmless after just being "embarrassed" just seemed like a huge waste of all that build up.
Idk, it's just a tiny bit disappointing when you think about it. Still loved Change Your Mind though.

White's redemption makes me so uncomfortable tbh,, I had this expectation for her that she'd be really experienced at being a dictator, that thousands of her own gems and possibly the diamonds have tried to change her mind and she hasn't budged but I guess not? It just seems really weird that her redemption came so fast when she was built up by all the gems to be this immovable force. Stubborn people, as she was built up to be, don't just realize their entire worldview is wrong. It's a bunch of little moments that lead up to something like that, not your shitty grandchild saying 'no u' and you making a massive heel-face turn.

Not a very good excuse to be honest. Actually think that because it's a kids show that the messages should be more realistic. It's funny, because Steven Universe didn't have this problem in other seasons. The characters actually took time to talk about things and figure things out. Steven says like three words to White dimond and suddenly she caves in? That's not really how it works in the real world and I think kids need to realize that. This whole thing now just feels like Rebecca's trying to get the show over as soon as possible.

Well, the fact that it's a kids cartoon and that Rebecca Sugar hasn't had much prior world-building and storytelling experience before SU. A lot of the criticisms that aren't about hiatuses are targeted towards her ability to write original characters, e.g. how people believe Steven was just annoying at the beginning, how one dimensional Garnet seemed, how overbearing Pearl was, etc. I don't blame Sugar though, not just because of her lack of experience but also because, like you said, this is a kids cartoon. If she was able to target it towards mature audiences, then it probably could have been much more satisfying but kids aren't expected to think about this stuff as much as we do.
And i know "kids cartoon" isn't really an excuse for poor storytelling but I think it's fairly easy to let it slide because of how hooked so many mature folks got off of the show so she definitely did something right. -probably to do with her amount of good representation, because lord knows we don't get enough of that stuff anywhere else-

White is redeemed, but clearly still problematic. White will need more help, I figure the first few episodes of season 6 will be addressing the problems homeworld has caused and getting the diamonds to see the evil of their colonization. Of course, interspersed with some other stuff. Blue and Yellow will be relatively easy to switch sides on this (maybe more blue than yellow but still) white, on the other hand, will take more time, Blue and Yellow were redeemed, they see the error of their ways, White simply sees she has flaws, she hasn't really addressed them. She sees that Steven is right about it being fine to have flaws, or at least, she wants to. However, she will have a tough time accepting how big and widespread those flaws really are.

Agreed. If you think about it, White's embarrassment lasted the rest of the show. Look at her face when she got in the pool... She was soooo uncomfortable! Like, I Do Not Want To Sit With All These Freakin Gems! I think in the next season, we'll see her in a back-sliden state, especially since to conquer and rule was all she knew... It’s over when they not only have come to terms, but try their absolute hardest to fix what they have done. Personally, I think White Diamond’s redemption is only beginning. Blue is like 3/4 there and Yellow is 1/2 finished. They both have come to terms and Blue has done a little bit to help, while Yellow did too but really only assisted Blue. So, yeah. It was obvious that after Reunited that the Diamonds would get redeemed I mean it would have been awkward if Steven somehow defeated or got rid of the Diamonds after he continuously called them "family". The crewniverse wrote themselves into this.

      @Nyra Lauphia
I normally don't like Lapis' attitude, personality, and overall character, but none of that has anything to do with not being developed or redeemed. That's just how she is after thousands of years of solitude and internal and external damage. What I don't like about her arc is how quick she was forgiven for her actions when it nearly matched Pearl's actions in the past by taking advantage of a friend and topping it off in her own way by stealing everything they owned and leaving them homeless. She only had one episode to explore her redemption and development and got over shadowed by Pink and ran off last minute without a second thought. Then we don't see her again until Reunited where she has already made her turning point redemption off screen and that was annoying how the audience didn't get to explore that with the character, and we were just supposed to accept it? It didn't fly with me. I also hated how in that same episode they brought in all the "badass" character tropes to make her seem more likeable. Like not being affected against a powerful attack, and casually coming in like she left without hurting anyone and all she had to say for herself was, it's all cool I'm going to be crystal gem too now because I literally have no other options.
And after everything Peridot did for her and after Lapis abandoned and stole everything from her, all she tells her is, "hey" without even trying to say sorry. Like, "hey if I help will you let all my terrible shit become water under the bridge, even if we never talk about this personally? Steven forgives me, so you have to forgive me too." None of that made her seem cool or badass. Just insensitive and indifferent to her own actions, even after spilling her internal conflict about what she did, to Steven, she didn't even have the nerve to explain herself and apologize to the person she actually hurt.
Honestly I can't even put all the blame on her. The Crewniverse designed her this way and they don't even realize they're presenting such a toxic character as a "good guy they should sympathize with" to little kids.
When I thought it couldn't get any worse White Diamond's redemption arc practically threw it's beer at Lapis.

Just because Steven was nice to them and tried to patch things does not mean the Diamonds will not have to face their sins. Healing takes steps, but the first step is stoping any further damage, and THEN reflect on the past. He kinda needed to hurry and heal corruption, of course he would get on good terms with his family. Now that the major problem is fixed, maybe they will start to make the Diamonds face who they are. Who knows? Just because Steven forgave them or was nice to them does not mean they are completely redeemed.

    • @lucasmartinez5703

Like Brandon said, they're not redeemed yet. Redemption for them is still a long road ahead, but it's not as unlikely from here on out.

If CN had not renewed it for more seasons, and that WERE to be the end, I would still be a little salty. There would still be so many unanswered questions and things to discover, such as:
    - The chest in Lion's mane
    - The long awaited Peridot and Lapis fusion (yes I ship Lapidot but even non Lapidot shippers probably really wanna see it too)
    - Jasper finding out and learning about the story that Rose is Pink, therefore Steven is Pink + Jasper and Amethyst interaction + Jasper and Lapis interaction
    - What happened to the rest of Pink's court
    - The bubbled Rose Quartz gems at the zoo (we've never actually seen a real Rose Quartz in the show, let that sink in)
    - Lars meeting his Mom and Dad since he got abducted + possibly Barb's reaction to Pink Lars
    - Where will the uncorrupted gems live, and is that corrupted gem that was in the barn shattered? Hopefully not
    - The off colors exploring earth/possibly visiting Lars' house and parents
    - Rhodonite and Flourite unfused
    - Other Peridots
    - Other Lapis Lazulis
    - Aquamarine and the Topaz fusion
    - The Zircons
    - How did Rose give birth to Steven? Did she turn into him, shapeshifting in a way...?
    - Why didn't Greg live with the gems in the temple? He could have had a room built for all his things!
    - Will Steven just live longer than the average human, like say 200 years, or will he live forever like the gems?
    - Was White Diamond holding homeworld together?
    - Who created White? We know White probably created the other diamonds, but who created her? Sneople?
That's all I can think of for now, tell me what I missed. Anyway, imagine if it ended. We would have never seen most of that. They can't fit everything in the movie after all. Ok I'm done lol uwu

They crush tons of gems and painfully force them to become a Geo-Weapon, have been tyrants of a World-conquering empire for MILLENNIA, and had strict views on gems for just as long and Steven redeems all of them in like a week? Come on. All these shitty towny episodes could’ve been steps towards a thoughtful redemption arc like Peridot’s for the Diamonds. That or keep them evil to save their character.

    • @ryancarson6962
      @ryancarson6962 5 лет назад +30

Saturn Galactic Well you have to keep in mind the context. Blue and Yellow stated they don’t really enjoy what they’re doing and only do it because it’s what White Diamond expects of them. White Diamond was the only one who believed in her ideology so changing the minds of the other Diamonds would be more easier. And White Diamond stopped because the perception that she’s completely perfect was pretty much destroyed when it appears that she herself is off color which means she isn’t as perfect as she says she is. Also the Diamonds aren’t really evil, it’s more complicated than that. Blue and Yellow do commit actions that aren’t good by any means but it’s not really done out of any real malice, it’s more out of progress for their empire and state they don’t really enjoy doing it. White Diamond herself isn’t really evil either, she’s immoral and brainwashes Gems but she seems to genuinely believe that what she’s doing is best for everyone and things are better this way, she even states that she’s supposed to make everything better, her actions seem to be motivated by an egotistical notion that she’s perfection and a genuine belief that she’s making everything better this way. The Diamonds are best categorized as Lawful Neutral rather than Evil.

Blue Diamond's redemption touched me deeply, so I was more than happy when it happened. Her line, "I always thought that you were failing this world, but if you were happier on Earth...then, maybe this world was failing you," brought me to tears. This can be applied to so many people across the globe throughout history -- such as the mass realization that women were treated unfairly, or that slavery was wrong, or how people should be allowed to practice their religion without fear of persecution through a dominated society. I could talk about Yellow's redemption, but I would rather just say that I felt it was rightful because, like Blue, I wanted to see her come around.
The only redemption I still struggle with is White's, but your analysis for it definitely shed some light on the subject. Thanks, Vox! At this point, I'm curious to see how exactly Homeworld's society will change because -- let's face it -- NO major society or its rulers changes overnight. This is going to be a lengthy process and a test of patience for everyone involved. Besides, it's not even possible for everyone to change from fearing being shattered for cross-Gem fusion, and then suddenly, that fear is gone the next day. In a perfect world, that could be the case, but in reality (especially when compared to something as prominent as the US nationwide legalization of gay marriage), there will still be people who seek to harm others that go against what they were initially taught to hate. It's horrible that some people still look down upon individuals in such a way despite what laws have changed in their society, but that's a harsh fact of life -- and the best way to combat it is to have people who are willing to stand up for freedom and love, and lead by example for a better tomorrow.
Anyways, as always, I love your Crystal Clear videos and wish you guys the best.

Me I find it weird that people are complaining that they are "Redeemed" just because Steven was able to eventually convince them to help him with healing corruption...
Thinking on it Whites Social awkwardness reminds me of Azula trying to be normal at a party... (Which if we're being honest here, makes sense... Since it is my understanding that she basically locked away for what 5,000 years or so with no no direct interaction with anyone and what indirect interaction she did have was barking orders through a slave/puppet... So yeah, she doesn't know how to handle herself all that well socially when she's not the one giving the orders... She was following Steven's lead when she came to earth to heal corruption, HE was the one that was in control of the situation...
My predictions going forward, she'll likely have come to the conclusion that Steven knows how to find a use for those she has no use for... Earth may end up becoming a sort of penal colony for all of the social outcasts and off colors of Gem society...

Yellow didn't understand the metaphor at first, but she understood it when it was put into a context that resonated with her by both Blue and Steven. Both Yellow and Blue were turned because they finally understood the harm they were doing to their people through realizing how they harmed Pink.
Also, I'd argue that their redemption was pretty much laid out all the way back in That Will Be All.
We knew what their deal was, and by Reunited, we knew what could turn them.

I partially understand why white was redeemed so fast. It's because her whole tower only needed one really small pink rock to be thrown at it, she didn't need a whole extra 3 or four episodes her arc was 'im the best there's nothing that I'm wrong about" well Steven is Steven and not pink "oh..well I was wrong now I don't know what to think.." that's really it the diamonds reflected off of that fear of white never being wrong and having that stiff control if they ever did actually get to talk to her about how they felt about pink then things could have been different..it was just a matter of her literally getting out of her own head for just a minute!

Countless People On countless worlds suffered if not flat out died under the diamond authority. You can't just forgive and forget that just because they now call Steven by his proper identity. The one act of pure good they did(helping the other gems) still left their victims irreversibly scared for life. In a persuit of sending their pro LGBT+ message(which is fine) they inadvertently sent another message where you can forgive your abusers easily without recompense or worse, show that you can commit horrid crimes and get away with it because "I'm open minded now" no. The diamonds are monsters and the ONLY person who still recognizes that is bismuth

I think a big focus on Season 6 will be Gem Society changing. It's broken and has caused misery for everyone. I don't think Steven really forgives them for their actions (and he did say he wants to put a stop to it but they are his family and he loves them even if he knows they aren't good people. Plus given the events of Change Your Mind it is now easier for Steven to influence the others for the better. I mean he's a Diamond the NEW Pink Diamond and does have responsibilities regarding that he can be what Pink wanted to be an agent for change.
The Diamonds will do for Steven what they didn't for Pink, listen to him. Nothing will change the fact what they did was awful but this change means nobody will suffer the fate of those who lost. The Diamonds' had their entire world view shattered and that will probably mean a lot of soul searching for them. And there might have been some organic remnants Pink always had a fondness for organic life and she was just as responsible for the mass genocides of the past as they are. She might not have ran a colony until Earth but she did play a role in help making the Gems which killed the planet but it took her seeig what would die first-hand set her on the path to redemption.
For all we know Yellow and Blue do feel at least on some level guilty for what they done but both were too afraid of White (justifiably given she's their abusive mother figure) to say or do anything that would go against White's perfect world view

I really enjoyed Change Your mind and loved the ending, but I personally am against the Diamonds’ redemption. Even regarding that Steven Universe is a kids’ show, I still think it was too naive. I am from a country that used to be a colony and that also had more than one dictators. In that point of view, redeeming the Diamonds and saying that they were also victims of the system(Blue and Yellow) seems a little... well... they certainly were unhappy but that doesn’t change the fact that they destroyed countless lives. Since the show isn’t over, I am counting on Crewniverse to focus on problems in post-colonial age in the following season.

  • @dragonvideos5667

With Blue Diamond, definitely. She was slowly realizing how much she hurt Pink and understood why Pink and the other gems would betray her, Yellow and White. It was because they were just as miserable as she is. It was apparent that she hated the structure of gem society in the bath scene in familiar.
For Yellow, she was a bit more stubborn and always hide her true emotions. Steven pointed out that if you remove everything that is flawed then you would be missing the things that makes you happy. I think Yellow had a moment of realization that she cared for Blue and Pink. She missed Pink a lot which we saw in That Will Be All through the song, What's The Use of Feeling, Blue? Hurting Blue only made her realize that she didn't want to lose her like she lost Pink. Not only that, but the questions she asked in Legs from Here to Homeworld were thrown into her face and hit her with the reality of the abuse that she, Pink and Blue suffered.
White's is a little quick, but it does make sense that she finally listened when she saw pink Steven. Her redemption shows that change in people can come from within and doesn't always have to include a person to change you mind.
It would be interesting on how much exploration of the diamonds will be touched on Season 6.

To me, Blue Diamond's 'redemption moment' felt more earned than Yellow or White's... mainly bc we saw just how torn she was about Pink's demise. We saw how close they were (Blue mourning at the Zoo, her memories from her Pool), but we also saw the downs of their relationship with her being controlling (the Moon Base Dream, the Flashback Dream in Change Your Mind). Blue was also more easy going of the two Diamonds from glimpses we'd seen (ex. giving her Pearl freedom to draw and make art - and yeah, that still sounds REALLY bad to say 'I gave my slave more freedom to do stuff than other Diamonds, ugh :( ) and her attitude with Pink, appearing to have spent the most time with her in flashbacks, as she was the one who not only commissioned the Zoo - again, still a really bad way to do it - but also allowed Pink to take home organic creatures, and tended to what Blue saw as "her pets" in her absence for 5000+ years (still... still skeevy, ngl) - not to mention how her first reaction to seeing 'Rose Quartz' on Homeworld was to issue a trial.
All-in-all, we've seen more of a compassionate side from Blue than from the other Diamonds throughout the entire show. After seeing her grief at losing Pink, and seeing how far she went to help Steven after finding out about Pink's real fate, she's more balanced in her realization. They finally got "Pink Diamond" back after millennia of believing her gone forever - so, when Pink acts the same way as she usually does, and Blue reacts as she usually does, it's more believable to see her realize why Pink left. When Steven asks her, after all this time away from Pink, with years of retrospection and 'what-ifs' to reflect on, "How many times did you lock her in here? How many times did you make her cry?" THAT'S when it hits home just how messed up their version of 'back-to-normal' was. Her immediate reaction to this is to acknowledge that they failed her, that their world and customs failed her if they drove Pink to such extremes to escape them like she did, and try to get Steven and his friends back home. Not to force him to stay or change his mind - just to help him get back to the place where he (as Pink) felt happiest, and loved. That realization, after everything we've seen of Blue, feels more earned BECAUSE we've seen her vulnerable before, even with her views.
Even then, it's not so much a redemption as a dawning realization of why, and an acceptance of this truth, for Blue. This doesn't redeem her as much as it reveals to her a glimpse of Homeworld's broken system and how bad it is if it drives someone she loves so far away. It gives her a branch to redeem herself, if she so chooses, but not a total Redemption.
Yellow? I'm torn. There was a good place to start with in the Zoo arc by that one moment of weakness in 'What's the Use of Feeling, Blue?' where it shows she's retreated to anger to hide from her pain and grief. But from there, I can't find too many moments of compassion, or cracks that could be used to break through. Her devotion to creating the Cluster, forced-fusion experiments, aren't balanced enough with more vulnerable moments like with Blue - at least, not that I could see here. I liked the idea of her being harder to convince, as well as the idea that she is under extreme pressure to do perfectly under White's standards for Homeworld. I just wish we had gotten to see it more. We see that she's willing to take the fall for "Pink" when they all return to Homeworld to talk to White Diamond, and at least willing to help with the Corrupted Gems on Earth - but the flashbacks, interactions, etc don't show as much of a Yellow pressured to do what she does to please White Diamond. It can be read in between the lines, but even then it's not all there. A harder sell, but not impossible - she clearly does care for her family (given how she takes over for Blue's responsibilities and covers for her when her mourning overtakes her, and is willing to help Steven with the Corrupted Gems). Again, we needed more time here to have it sink in. I think Vox hit the nail on the head for Blue being the tipping point - I just wish we'd had more flashbacks to look in on, like Yellow with White.
White Diamond though... while I like the approach they took in Change Your Mind (to get out of her own head, which I actually really like the idea of), there's admittedly a lot of Deux Ex Machina in swaying her over via magical pink dance glow. I agree with Vox 100% here - I think they were going for having White Diamond's certainties being challenged for the first time in thousands of years - someone confronting her with an impossible truth that ISN'T something she organized, fixed, established when she's all knowing like she is - and having THAT be the point that breaks her (takes a Diamond to crack a Diamond, after all, ehehe). Basically the whole 'What happens when an unstoppable force (Love) meets an immovable object (White)? They surrender" situation applied here.
I hope that they go into all of the issues with Homeworld in Season 6 in depth.

I'm perfectly happy with Blue being redeemed because the way it was done was through a realization that struck home - that she'd played a key role in driving away someone who was so important to her, and caused not only her own misery for the next few thousand years, but the same misery she suffered through to someone she loved. Blue's the most deeply sentimental of the Diamonds, and I'd think after realizing what she did to both Pink and Steven, she'd be pretty receptive to anything Steven says.
Yellow's redemption was tougher for me, but I still really like it. For me, it's less how she made Pink miserable, and more that continuing down her path is going to strip her of everything left in her life that she still draws happiness from. She and Blue very obviously have a close relationship (heh, I thought I was the only one who was totally ambivalent to whether or not it was romantic or platonic, as long as it was deep), and she's clearly struggling with having to fight Blue before Steven interrupts her. And I like the realization that her entire demeanor is formed from stress. It explains a lot in retrospect, the same way That Will Be All explained so much in Message Received. So I 100% agree with your analysis that it's Blue redeeming Yellow, not Steven.
The part I'm shakier on is Yellow instantly recognizing Steven's his own person, and being so receptive to the same idea that Blue is - that Pink was suffering under their rules, and that that's actually important. And the part I'm more confused on with Blue is the idea that she knows all Gems are suffering under the regime, not just her and Yellow. Blue is sentimental, but she's also very self-absorbed. We didn't see any clues that either Yellow or Blue actually disagreed with the rule they perpetrated. We don't see the idea that other Gems matter in their worldview. So to that extent, I'm :/, but willing to accept it because the root cause for them switching sides checks out to me, and I do expect Season 6 to reexamine this.
White... I'm less convinced. It's less that she's redeemed and more that she just... stops functioning, I guess? And that makes her receptive to whatever Steven says? But then I think the other Diamonds forgive -her- way too fast. Or become comfortable with her way too fast. Seriously, they work up the courage to talk to her and she more or less kills them for disobedience. If Pink Pearl was any indication, she had no plans on letting them go. Steven forgives everyone because that's just who he is, but the Diamonds aren't nearly as pure or kind as him.

I feel like a lot of people are missing something. Human morality was made so we would not destroy ourselves. The gems do not need to worry about aging or reproduction. The Diamonds see all planets as resources and other species the same way we see bugs. We shouldn't push our ethics on an immortal race that has had a completely different path of evolution and society. Maybe the Diamonds were born with the sole purpose of expanding their empire? Gems have done the same thing for thousands of years with no reason to try anything different, all they needed was a different perspective. I think they deserve a chance.

Maybe it's because there was a big chunk of the episode devoted to trying to change White's mind, maybe it's because we spent more time with Yellow but all of her hints of redemption were a lot more subtle than Blue's, but I just had a harder time believing it.
With the context of blue being the reason, it does help, but it doesn't change the fact that it was incredibly rushed on in the episode alone. It seemed even Blue had more screen time in the same episode before she had a change of heart.

Blue has always been the most empathetic of the 3 living Diamonds and having her come to the realization the way the society works makes her and her people both miserable is huge. And Given she has developed at least some respect for Organic life makes me think she will be the easiest to sway on how Colonization is wrong. As she does dearly love both Pink and Steven she will listen to their view .
And Yellow has had her entire view of their society shattered since enforcing it literally had her assault her own beloved sister all to please an abuse mother who didn't care about her and her own pain. Yellow loved Pink she was her baby sister and when Pink faked her death she lost any joy she had and had to see her other sister fall apart.

I think anyone can be redeemed, if executed correctly. The key is setting standards of right and wrong. Often, as long as there is some form of good in someone, that person can be redeemed. This is why I feel the redemption arc of the diamonds work. The diamonds being redeemed plays into the small form of good they harbor, then using it for them to recognize their flaws. It was the same with White Diamond. Her small form of good is wanting to do good. Everything she did was for what was good in her own eyes. It was only by recognizing that she is just as capable of making mistakes or messing up that she began redeeming.
Honestly, the only character that can’t be redeemed is Pink Diamond herself and that’s because she’s gone.

  • @starbird3939

As a family, the diamonds are redeemed.
White Diamond is the matriarch. She placed tremendous amount of pressure on Blue and Yellow, who were the “mothers” for Pink, the daughter/maiden. The pressure for perfection forced Blue and Yellow to abuse Pink by infantizing her, imprisoning her, and whatever else (like Blue forcing Pink to cry as a way to subdue her).
But when Steven pointed out how thos need for perfection created a toxic family based on inpossible standards, they Diamonds listened and believed. That was their redemption. So as a family, yes they are redeemed.
That said, they are not yet redeemed for being tyrants. I want the next season to explore the diamonds rebuilding what they can and facing the consequences of what is lost.

Regarding the diamonds redemption, here’s how I would’ve made it happen. First things first, white is not redeemed in this version. And secondly, I imagine Pink was the diamond of destruction, but her powers managed to grow and develop as she became Rose Quartz. To me, Change Your Mind goes pretty much how it did for the most part. Except, when White tries to pull Steven’s gem out, Steven blacks out before the gem is removed. (I think he blacked out after it was removed) When Steven awakes, he sees White in a yellow bubble. White was poofed, then Yellow bubbled her. Steven asks what happened, and it turns out that he poofed White, turning pink before the fight began, returning to normal once White was poofed, then passing out. Steven doesn’t believe it at first, but the evidence is clear. And he’s terrified of what he can do. The diamonds decided to rule over Homeworld together, being much kinder and far less strict. Steven returns home, and begins to look for another way to heal the corrupted gems.

I don’t think any of the diamonds should have been redeemed they were tyrants who treated everyone beneath them who shattered and oppressed many and have done horrible things and yeah Steven empathized with them but you can empathize with an enemy and still have to fight them especially after what white did confirmed to have abused pearl possibly for hundreds or thousands of years you can’t just forgive and forget all they’ve done

Also touching up on the colonization thing, I think Peridot can help. In "Message Received", Peridot mentioned that she had plans on how to use a planet's resources without disrupting the local ecosystem before Yellow rejected the idea or didn't even listen to the idea would be more accurate. So basically diamonds can get what they want, without going killy-killy-murder.

Is it even redemption? Does it need to be? There's a difference between "being redeemed" and just "getting them on our side". The idea that the diamonds have been redeemed seems like it stems from the view that a villain has to either win outright, be redeemed or be defeated. Maybe sometimes you just have to put aside justice for the guilty to get justice for the innocent - in this case, the corrupted gems. It's not perfect, but it's still better. That's still enough to celebrate.

In the chest in Lion's mane, there should be a gem in a bubble that's been bubbled which has also been bubbled. (Maybe for protection). Then Steven let's it loose to see who it is and it doesn't say anything but runs away. Then the gems can tell him it was a gem so corrupt, it rejected itself and became evil adopting the name, Diamond Slayer.
Idk sounded cool in my head...

Redemption for them is still a long ways. This is just meant to be the beginning of significant change for the Diamonds (aka the beginning of their redemption arc). Peridot wasn't redeemed in an episode. The Diamonds are the same. People say their REDEMPTION happened to fast when that wasn't even what happened. They were just convinced to want to change and to prove that they even went out of their way to heal the gems they have corrupted. Now it's time for them to put in the work. Next season.

  • @CherryCurlZ06

My main problem was that was so much dramatic build up in the series about what the Gem empire was doing: The Kindergartens, the holes in the earth, the 1000 year war, the cluster (an amalgamation of tortured gem bodies), the GALAXIES of conquered worlds. The fact that it just all lead to a family counseling moment is what was weird. I'm not sure what they are going to do for season 6, but I wish they addressed gem production more, because I feel like it would be a goo way to get to the root of understanding White Diamonds mind. The line in Change your Mind, where White says, "I certainly don't need you" to Pink was weird to me. She's this supposedly perfect, all knowing being, then why did she NEED to make other diamonds or other gems for that matter? She also said that Pink was a part of her that needed to be suppressed. So I guess that means every gem is some kind of part of her? (Hence her ability to mind control everyone). But I guess she couldn't fully repress Pink because Pink is...the Heart? She is her joy? What I'm saying is that there could have been a better self-examination arc, or build up.

i liked the fact that all 3 were redeemed, i find endings like that to be a refreshing positive message and should probably be done more often. i understand that it seemed a bit rushed, especially White Diamond's redemption. i really wish that they had shown White Diamond a bit more so we could really be shocked when she is redeemed. like if she had been a bit more scary for a bit longer then i think her being redeemed would have been less predictable. that being said i am happy with how things turned out. this first story of Steven Universe was a truly wonderful story with great messages and amazing songs and a great cast of lovable characters what more could we ask?

  • @sadlobster1
    @sadlobster1 5 лет назад +25

In my eyes, I think they CAN and SHOULD be redeemed.
    HOLD IT!
Before people start slamming me with "space nazi" comments. Allow me to first explain why they should be redeemed.
Yes; for thousands of years, the other three Diamonds have done some HORRIBLE things to the universe. But the path to fully reconciling one's actions begins with a single step.
In this; the other Diamonds took not one, not two, not three but FOUR big steps forward and all of it was made possible thanks to Steven. By simply talking with them, he managed to achieve the following.
    1. In talking with Blue, he helped her understand how her behavior did more harm than good to Pink. He even helped her understand that she shouldn't force her own pain on her. Once she realized what she did was wrong, Blue changed for the better.
    2. For centuries, Yellow had been forced to uphold White's authority over Homeworld. To "change" or destroy anything and everything White or herself felt was "flawed." But when Steven helped show her that everything she did, even fighting Blue, was actually making things worse; Yellow realized how blind she was.
    3. White was so consumed over wanting everything to be flawless that it didn't matter who she hurt to achieve it. She even saw Pink being in Steven as a flaw. But after realizing how strong Pink truly was with Steven, how childish she truly was and after Steven encouraged everyone to be who they are, no matter what...White saw the truth.
Finally, the biggest step they took towards redemption was in agreeing to help cure the Gems who were corrupted. Now, I ask you; if the Diamonds didn't truly change...why else would they come to earth and help?
In conclusion, while many still find their redemptions hard to swallow due to the horrid things they've done. Let us not forget other villains who performed equally similar actions in anime and western cartoons.
Figures like Vegeta, Lord Hater, Harley Quinn, Captain Cold, Terra and others all come into my mind...what about you

sadlobster1 Problem is though all those characters you named took a while before being redeemed and wasn’t done as quickly as this show executed. Especially Vegeta the man literally had to raise a family, die twice (once by sacrificing himself and trying to repent for his past deeds) help save the world on multiple occasions, and even then he’s still not a complete good guy, just someone who’s willing to protect his family and home. This stuff took years of time and through it all he constantly got his whenever he did something evil. Meanwhile White Diamond got embarrassed once in the span of maybe 10 minutes and she’s willing to change. It doesn’t work like that and feels completely jarring and untrue

The Real redemption arc is when they loosen gem laws, legalized fusions, illegalized owning pearls (sorry blueberry pearl), end colonization, and preserve alien life. The finale is just tip of iceberg like I'm working on a fanfic with a similar theme of Avatar (diamonds saving a lush planet from destruction)

Blue did say that it's the start of Era 3, so maybe things will change on Homeworld thanks to what the Diamonds learned from Steven. Era 1 was when the war took place, Era 2 was when resources were declining, maybe Era 3 would serve as a period of liberalism for the gems on Homeworld.
Also, I'm fine with Blue and Yellow's redemption since they have appeared in a certain number of episodes already. White may have been a bit too rushed since she appeared in only two episodes.
