Yeah, this is when we come to one of the big flaws of the show; stapling itself to Steven's perspective. Because character development only seems to happen if Steven visits a character and stories are made if Steven either is present or told about it, this meant that you had stories where Steven had to be in them or Characters just wouldn't develop. It also didn't help that Steven, for the most part, was a passive player in his own story, lying on the beach until something literally walked by him.
Plus, just as a thing, Rose only appears in flashbacks of people who were positively biased towards her because, well, she's dead.
Sadly, unless Steven discovered time travel, since the rejuvenator didn't reset his gem fully, or he makes an effort to go see the diamonds, we won't get that.

Change Your Mind still resulted in one of the _worst pacing issues_ of the whole show.
let's think about what "Change Your Mind" actually means as a title. a lot of people think it means that Steven changed the minds of all three of the diamonds to make them start caring about the error of their ways and trying to fix their mistakes, but it's honestly way more nuanced than that.
what Steven had to do was convince the diamonds to listen to him. and that should've taken way longer than it did, because it _should NOT have been a given._ even if he is a diamond! when the diamonds first found out that Steven was Pink's son, they didn't even really find _that_ out at all... they thought that Steven was just a new reformation of Pink. they called Steven Pink, they expected him to have the same character "flaws" as Pink, and they started treating him the same way they treated Pink before she even left. Yellow in particular instantly wrote off Pink's "faked death" as just some stunt that she pulled as a cheap bid for attention.
Yellow was much more ready to put the past behind her and move forward about Pink... she lays out her position pretty clearly in "what's the use of feeling blue" so like, just go watch that to see how willing she'd be to actually change her actions based on her affection for Pink. I think the SU writing team did too good a job of characterizing the diamonds as having a one track mind that will steamroll the desires of others... including, historically, Pink Diamond herself.
Pink literally had to run away and fake her own shattering because they wouldn't listen to her no matter what she said or how hard she tried. and before you say that the trauma of thinking they lost her would phase the diamonds, I will say that I'd maybe believe that for Blue, but it would be wildly out of character for either of the other two. when Steven appears before White for the first time, she's basically like "oh, you're back. did you have your fun? get it all out of your system? are you ready to settle down yet?" like this was nothing. and at the end of the movie Yellow literally laughs at Spinel and says that 6,000 years is nothing. you know... a little over exactly the amount of time that they've thought that Pink was dead? so Pink's faked death could've been a stunt pulled over the equivalent of maybe like a year (?) from the perspective of the diamonds. the diamonds are not a monolith. Blue, Yellow, and White are different people with different capacities for, and reactions to, trauma. I could see changing Blue's mind enough to get her to listen to Pink, after an episode like this... but not all in one episode!
and what _really_ throws a wrench in all of this is that Steven is Steven. he's not even the Pink they knew! he's even younger, and even less of an ideal person to wield the kind of power that they were already reluctant to give to Pink... and look what Pink did with the power they gave her in the first place! literally, what incentive do they have to let Steven hold any sway over their thinking? he might be a lion, but he's a cub, and White is the true leader of the pack. I could much more easily imagine them becoming extra coddling and protective over him, so that something like this wouldn't happen again, while not changing anything because technically everything that happened just points to the idea that they were right all along.
When White was literally willing to yank Steven's gem out, because she valued having Pink back over having something that looked like Steven, I think it's obviously gonna result in tonal whiplash if she instantly starts valuing Steven when she learns that she can't have what she really wants (Pink Diamond). and especially when the line that actually Changes Her Mind is the "no, you're acting like a kid" line from Steven. up until that point, White had been all fighty, and _that_ was the line that took all the fight out of her. which literally just doesn't make any sense.
the diamonds needed an arc. they needed time, and they needed work. they needed to not get treated like all three of them are the same character. they don't have the same issues, therefore, they cannot be solved with the same solution. they had very weak reasons for switching from treating Steven dismissively, the same way they did with Pink, to suddenly taking him very seriously and risking upsetting everything that had been working so well for them for such a long time. this was rushed writing.
and before anyone even gets on me about this, I actually LOVE the diamonds in their villainous roles! I'm just asking for _more of that please._ like, you can redeem them later, that's fine, I don't even care! just give me more of that good active antagonism! the diamonds have barely even had a chance to be named characters with faces, voices, and personalities... and they all had so much potential to be really cool villains! so much squandered potential, because now they just seem wishy washy! I wanted to see White Diamond being all creepy and domineering, like the other mother from Coraline! I wanted White Diamond to use her brainwashing ability to mind control a room full of gems and turn them into a full choir to back up some really super grandiose villain song! I wanted to see more of Blue being actually mysterious the way she seemed when she first appeared... I especially loved Blue's aesthetic ties to fae folk... I was looking forward to seeing that leveraged as a force of antagonism! I wanted to explore Yellow's personality as someone who is just more rough and tumble than the other two diamonds in general... like maybe her whole court is just a more fighty sort of environment, wherein she values strength and power. there was just so much wasted material with the diamonds, and putting them on relatively amicable terms with Steven just makes them seem too tame to really ham it up with their respective personalities at the forefront.

    • @StareachValcin
      @StareachValcin 5 лет назад +12

@@loregoblin3854 you make a lot of great points and I agree in the case of White Diamond that her changing her mind was rushed. In fact, I felt that Steven should not have been able to change White Diamond's mind during "change your mind", but I think in the case of Yellow Diamond and especially Blue Diamond, changing their minds was fine. In Blue Diamond's case, she was willing to side with Steven to make up for hurting Pink Diamond, something Blue Diamond clearly never wanted to do and she realized she had done to Pink Diamond. In the case of Yellow Diamond, I don't think Steven would've been able to sway her to his side without Blue Diamond, due to the fact that Yellow Diamond really cared a lot for Blue Diamond, possibly more than Pink Diamond. White Diamond's case is more that she had to face the fact that she was wrong, because after removing Pink's gem from Steven, she expected Pink Diamond to return, but instead the gem took the form of Steven. White Diamond tried to take control of the situation by forcing her will onto Steven's gem half, but to no avail. After Steven's human and gem halves combined back together, White Diamond threw a tantrum as her way of not accepting that she was wrong. I still think that White Diamond should have had more time to change her mind and it could have been done better. At the very least, I think Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond were handled great.

    • @loregoblin3854
      @loregoblin3854 5 лет назад +13

@@StareachValcin I agree except for the fact that I still think it all happened way too fast. I wanted each of the diamonds to have an arc, meaning that each mind changed would have at least one episode for the actual change in perspective, plus possibly some supplementary episodes to address specific issues.
for example, I think Blue's arc could've revolved around her wanting to go back to exactly how things were. not only in terms of treating Steven just like Pink, but in terms of not updating how she would treat Pink, in spite of everything that happened. Blue could get over this fairly quickly as her nostalgia gives way to potential frustration at not understanding Pink's actions, or why things turned out this way... and then realizing that Steven is different than Pink when she sees that Steven doesn't fully understand Pink's choices either. he's not her. and in fact, Blue finds Steven perhaps more relatable to her than Pink ever was, because he understands what it's like to remember Pink in a complicated way.
I think Yellow's arc then could've revolved around being frustrated with Blue. she and Blue had been really close in the aftermath of Pink's disappearance... possibly closer than they'd ever been. but Yellow still was pushing for Blue to snap out of her depression and get with the program, because Yellow seems like she got over her grief by distracting herself with her work. and that means that while the two were there for each other, Yellow might not have been able to fully empathize with Blue, or her methods of working through this crisis. in addition to that, Yellow also seems to be the main diamond involved with conquest and expansion of their empire... meaning that while she had previously taken pride in this as an accomplishment, Steven is directly asking her to consider it a failure instead. this would be incredibly difficult for her to accept, independent of all other feelings she has about Blue, White, or even Pink. how much of her existence will she have wasted if she admits that this was wrong? wasn't it worth creating all these gems that exist today, even if she had to desecrate planets in order to make the kindergartens that produced them? and if she really does consider all of this to be wrong... could she ever be forgiven? for Yellow, not admitting that she was wrong might be the only barrier between her and several confidence-shattering revalations. these could've been really compelling questions, if the show had even taken the time to ask them... much less answer them.
and as for White... I would love to explore how cold and alien she really is. like maybe this isn't an ideology thing so much as it is a biology thing for her... she is ancient. by my understanding, she is the progenitor of their species. perhaps, as gems have strayed further and further from her image, (that of the original gem), they have become less and less like her. less and less standardized, and less and less perfect. theoretically, the climax could involve Steven asking White why she doesn't just brainwash everyone in all of gem society. then they'd be as perfect as she wants them to be... because right now they aren't. and they never will be. they're just hiding their flaws and imperfections out of fear, but beneath that, everyone has flaws, and that's okay. but White takes it as advice, rather than a rhetorical question, and actually decides to brainwash everyone. to which Steven takes it a step further and asks why she even needs all these extra bodies. she is already a perfect being... why corrupt her perfection with all these add-ons? to which she just smiles blankly, stops everything, and disappears into the vacuum of space... because that made as much sense to her as anything. this is, of course, only one possible direction you could go from the original concept of White Diamond, but it's also an example of how to preserve the unsettling intimidation factor of her first appearance, all the way up through her "defeat" and all while commenting on what it means to be a thinking and feeling creature, and why that matters so much.
and if any of this were to get properly addressed, each diamond would need breathing room within the narrative. to have all three change their tune so heavily in one episode was just too much. even if it had been just Yellow and Blue it would be too much. there was too much information established too solidly prior to this, that had to reroute itself too quickly. and especially because Steven Universe had established a pretty laid back pace for the story in the whole rest of the show. important plot moments would be broken up by large amounts of other episodes that had more to do with the characters and their problems outside the context of intergalactic conflict. love it or hate it, the "filler" made the show take it's time... which makes Change Your Mind stick out like a sore thumb for all the stuff it crams in.

I'd like to respectfully disagree with the point that they weren't genocidal. Genocide has been used throughout history to kill people who didn't fit into a supposed place in society. It is systematic and against others of our own species.
The diamonds used genocide to eradicate gems who didn't fit into their idea of a perfect society. For example the off colors, they could've been capable members of the gem world, but because they look different they were immediately ostracized and shattered. Hell you can even argue that "off-colors" in itself is a slur.

There are like 4 or 5 ways at minimum that the Diamond rule was genocidal. I'm not saying you can't try to redeem whoever you want, but don't paint them in a better light. They were all extremely genocidal.
      • they made the cluster
      • they tried to wipe off all life on earth again, including their own people with what ended in corruption
      • they have killed a total of billions of species across hundred of planets
      • the most blatant instance of genocide: they tried to murder all off colors, members of their own species who they deemed "lesser". Guess who also deemed people of their own kind "lesser" and tried to commit genocide- Nazis/Hitler. The fact that they saw all these lifeforms as lesser does not change the fact that its genocide, in fact it falls in line with what real life people who commited genocide deluded themselves into believing.
If they wanted to put them on the path to redemption, they need write it better. Even if they're not supposed to be considered redeemed yet, the way their shift was written was so bad. Specially White, but also Yellow. As least Blue made more sense given what we saw about her character, and Yellow had more time to develop even if her character was really inconsistent, with her saying she never liked the colonization, even though in early episodes she clearly did and showed no indication of being scared of the regime.

The fact that they started to redeem them/ show them in a positive way and overlook their crimes is crazy to me.

If the closest person in the world to you, got killed (so you thought) by a group of people that also plan to kill you (*cough* bismuth *cough*) wouldn't you yourself perhaps take action against that if you could? Both for self preservation, and revenge.
The Diamonds were awful, and what they did could not be excused, but never the less they did have their reasons, and they did love pink (in the abusive way). Not to mention, the reason Blue grieved so much, was because she thought she was the reason Pink got killed. (When Steven went to the moon after Lapis, he dreamt and had one of Pink's memories in which Blue says:
"But this is what you wanted. You begged us for a colony of your own. And now, all you want to do is be rid of it. First, there were too many organics, then their cities were too difficult to dismantle, a-and now these... Crystal Gems? We're tired of your excuses, Pink. This Rose Quartz can't hurt you. You can't be swayed by a few unruly Gems. Enough! *tries to cheer Pink up* You must understand. You... are a Diamond. Everyone on this planet is looking to you. You don't even have to do anything. Just smile, and wave. Show everyone you are unfazed by this little uprising."

I never wanted them to be shattered, but it feels trite to accept that an empire ruled by semi-immortal, wholly unaccountable monarchs is fine now that one of said monarchs is a nice person. An assurance that Steven had set up some sort of check on their power while he was gone would have been a nice throw-away line.
Also, if I may nitpick the genocide comment, the Diamonds definitely knew that the Earth was inhabited by sapient life when they decided to blow it up with The Cluster. Plus they only spared the Rose Quartzes because they were mementoes of Pink, suggesting they'd be fine with wiping out a less emotionally fraught line of gems.

The diamonds indulged Pink A LOT. And imagin your child runs away, you mourn it and it come back a few millenias later. You are desperate and would try anything to keep them home.
Really, pink Is more important to them (emotionally) than their empire. It's not a good charactertrait, but it's absolutely believable.

@@ketsu4435 I understand that the Diamonds are traumatized and therefore susceptible to Steven's demands, but relying on emotional manipulation to achieve long-lasting societal change strikes a wrong chord with me, particularly since Steven is refusing to stay with the Diamonds and endure their dysfunctions, thereby proving to them that not even following his instructions will given them the emotional outlet they want. So what's to stop the Diamonds from just going back to the way things were once they realize nothing will ever please him they way they want? Spinel? I don't think she's in a good state to bare that kind of emotional baggage, never mind kept the empire from regressing.
But more than that, I'm annoyed that Steven doesn't appear to have any plans to overhaul the system so there's some sort of check on the Diamonds. Especially since it's clear he has no interest in sticking around to keep a permanent eye on them. We began this series with three unaccountable tyrants in power, and, as of the movie, we end it with three tyrants in power, plus a well-meaning sixteen-year-old who kind of wants to get on with his life. And he absolutely has the right to do that! But he should at least be working to ensure that eons-old trauma isn't the only thing keeping the Diamonds in line before assuming that he's reach his happy ending. And yes, I know the point of the movie was Steven learning that happily-ever-after doesn't exist, but it would've been nice to know there was something in the works to decentralize the empire's power.

The Diamonds obviously are not literally Hitlers. I just think the video brushed aside the idea that the Diamonds would ever kill a sapient race a bit quickly considering one of the show's big plot points was them trying to wipe out the vast majority of a sapient race, even if they didn't view that race as sapient.

12:35 This argument holds no weight whatsoever. Saying it's alright that A does a thing because B does it as well is childishly simplistic and ignores the nuances and differences between both of them. It's a false equivalence.
Most people enjoy watching and reading about what The Joker does not because villainy is inherently entertaining but because he is the perfect antagonist for Batman. His actions force conflict upon the hero. If they were to change that dynamic and Batman convinced The Joker to give up his criminal ways that dynamic would fall apart. I'd bet good money that people wouldn't be as interested in The Joker if that were to happen.
This argument also ignores the fact that people did enjoy watching The Diamonds while they were villains. That's not to say that I think The Diamonds can't be redeemed. Like I said before Batman and Steven Universe are entirely different properties with different stories and different goals. But to try to justify a rushed redemption arc by arguing that they're still the villains even though the threat has been completely sapped out of them is preposterous.
What about Bismuth? She tried to murder Steven because he disagreed with her. She wasn't even given a redemption arc. Everyone just forgave her. Are there any arguments out there that she's still a villain? And I don't want to hear any of this nonsense about her feeling like she needed to attack Steven because Rose Quartz bubbles her before. She attacked Steven out of anger while he was trying to run away from her.
I love Steven Universe but I do acknowledge that it has flaws. Out of all the lazy excuses for the bad writing I've heard in this video hearing him say but mom, Batman does it too is probably the worst. Especially seeing as though it is objectively incorrect.

@@JLacay To be fair to Lapis I do feel like some of her earlier actions weren't malicious. She was trapped in the mirror for thousands of years, her gem was damaged and she was confused and traumatized. Let's not forget the fact that she tried to warn Steven and The Gems about the oncoming invasion from Peridot and Jasper. I hesitate to call it a redemption arc because I don't think she had a lot to redeem but her coming around is more convincing because I do feel like it was built up to properly.

Pink always tried to become better. And yes, would there have been better ways to protect earth? Sure. But people don't take into account the fact that the only way she could oppose the other diamonds, was through the persona of Rose Quartz.
She was probably so terrified of them (they did abuse her for thousands of years, both physically and mentally), that if they knew that she was actually Rose... she couldn't muster the strenght to stand up to them (much less fight against them) just because of the fear they instillied in her. But through Rose, she was free. She was the rebellious gem who found herself, and who didn't care what anyone thought! The gem who was going to drive the diamonds off of earth and save it!
Pink and Rose, always tried to do what she thought was best, and even though, most times that was flawed because of the own upbrining and baggage, in the end she was redeemed herself. She gave up on herself, to channel the power of the greatest thing in the universe (to her), the power of a human... to change. And that power, the power to change, and grow, eventually fixed everything.

@Devinn here are a few things you got wrong. First spinal was the only one she left for selfish reason and that was before she learned to appreciate life, bismuth wanted to shatter gems something she was against and bismuth attacked her maybe even shatter her so what was she supposed to do and she didn't even want to do that to her, and leaving Pearl to suffer was not selfish because how was she supposed to Know Pearl was that obsessed with her, and did you see what happened when her secret was revealed her not keeping secrets would make the whole rebellion point less as the rebellion would vide over it and the diamonds would know that she was pink if they captured a gem and forced them to talk, and when starting a war against what's wrong with the empire home world chasing you down is to be expected but the gems fighting for what is right did it any way because they wanted to be free. And only when it benefits her I am sure her bubbling currupt gems in hope for them to be healed in the future after she failed to heal them is 100% selfish I guess. And she didn't want to dump all the responsibility on Steven she had Steven because she genuinely loved Greg and wanted to make new life with him I guess she not aloud to have live now and she was childish but we see that she grew in responsibility over the years but still had some of her childish treats and I am pretty sure not shattering other games is not selfish.

there's a clip of Pink's memories where Yellow is shown telling her gems to "exterminate" organics on one of her colonies. she also is actively trying to activate the cluster which will destroy the planet which she knows (and is further reminded of this by Peridot) and then says she doesn't care. she along with Blue and White attempted attacked the entirety of the gems on the Earth; it's unclear what exactly the attack was meant to do since they seem surprised at the fact that the Earth gems are corrupted but the fact that they had assumed that all the gems on Earth were shattered, and that they were trying to build a planet sized super weapon (you don't need a weapon unless you're using it against someone) out of the shards of millions of gems implies that they attacked fully knowing that it would effectively kill whoever was present on the surface which is arguably genocide as well. it does not matter what the team says in tweets and blogs, it matters what is in the show...
and in the show, they're genocidal. simple as that.

I like how in "Homeworld Bound" Yellow was shown repairing gems used previously in experiments. It was clear that she enjoys bringing gems back to life, that she does it on her own volution and noone really pushes her to do it. She calles her past actions "horrible" and is glad to undo them, because "it would only be right". She even plans on repairing the Cluster, which is going to take a tremendous amount of work. Also, Yellow was the only diamond shown to actually do something useful, unlike Blue (who is now a.. drug-dealer?) and White who travels from planet to planet with some parades... or something.
The diamonds aren't redeemed - yet. Their remorse is mostly a façade for now, and it's natural. Changing one's mind and adopting a new way of thinking takes time, especially when we talk about creatures who never age and exist for millenia. I don't think that diamonds are beyong redemption, it just will happen off-screen and will take quite some time.
As for the fact that the show ended in such a peaceful way - I used to think about alternative ways it could've go and came to a conclusion that no, there were no other way to end their era of terror. What could Steven and Co do instead? Start a war? There already was a war, and the Crystal Gems lost it. Shatter the diamonds? With so many gems loyal to diamonds, they would've just sign a death sentence for themselves. All Homeworld gems (not counting the Off-Colors) were either loyal to their leaders (Peridot and Agate, for example) or just brainwashed. There was no way the Crystal Gems could've shatter the Gem Hitlers without being shattered right after themselves. They couldn't banish them from the Homeworld either, for the same reasons.
As was shown by Yellow, the diamonds aren't completely faking it, and with more time passing, they will fully realize how horrible their actions were. It is just going to take some time.

The Diamonds were awful, and what they did could not be excused, but never the less they did have their reasons, and they did love pink (in their own abusive way).
Enough! tries to cheer Pink up You must understand. You... are a Diamond. Everyone on this planet is looking to you. You don't even have to do anything. Just smile, and wave. Show everyone you are unfazed by this little uprising."
So in Blue's mind, she herself sent Pink (the single most important gem to her in the entire universe, who she genuinely loved) to her death... That's really gotta weigh down on you man...

Everyone that wasn't a diamond would never dream about being her friend and the actual Diamonds were too busy or just didn't understand where she was coming from. Basically, parents don't understand. The diamonds weren't redeemed, but they had realized they were flawed and accepted. The first step to fixing a problem is to realize that there is a problem. Denying and attempting to cover up their flaws harmed the diamonds and their gem society. They didn't improve upon their own flaws, so it just got worse. By trying to be perfect, they sacrificed all the things they loved and needed. If they had realized what they were doing wrong sooner, things wouldn't have gotten so bad on the first place.

also, even after knowing that steven was pink, the diamonds were far from just doing whatever steven asked but they just did a full 180 in change your mind and it just felt undeserved
double also, when people say the diamonds are genocidal i think they're talking about the part where they just wipe out the entire gem armada on earth or when they tell pink to hurry up with the colonization on earth, they already knew about humans, and they didn't care either way

So Pink being the bad guy isn't that much of a stretch. And about the white diamond thing. Did she know? I mean it might seem like she did, but then why go along with the corruption attack. Why destory Pink's only way home? Why let Yellow use her cluster to destory earth and potentially kill Pink if she was still on earth? Why not tell Yellow and Blue that Pink is still out there? Why leave earth and abandon Pink? No, i personally believe White's words and actions were more based on Denial. After all each diamond is grieving Pink that's a simple truth. It's just they are all doing it in different yet equally unhealthy ways.
Yellow was supressing, Blue was just plain depressed, and White in Denial after all. Up to this point she believed she was a perfect essentially all knowing being. Does lying to herself really seem that far fetched with an ego that large? Maybe she just convinced herself that Pink was alive, but some part of her didn't truly believe it as her not stopping Yellow and the attack hint too. That tiny speck of self doubt would explain why she locked herself in her ship and hasn't left since. After all as long as she's in her own self created bubble. There's nothing can prove her wrong, right?

ZOMSEN I completely agree, sometimes some people go too far to defend this immaculate can-do-no-wrong show, and it seems to utterly cloud their judgement. They make excuses for lousy writing, bad plot line resolutions and poor storyboarding, and viciously attack any critiquing perspectives, while still getting on a high horse because of the show’s premise.

@@jeypi113 on the flip side though, that doesn't justify bad critiques that spread literal misinformation or act like these mistakes are some how unforgivable and the people who caused them should be basically treated as social pariahs.

Very rare to find a good critical review, most comments about "lousy writing and bad plot lines" are subjective

I guess he's talking about EZ PZ/Lily Orchard type videos where they seem to attack the show more on a personal level than on a critical one. Not all critics are like that of course
