The conclusion of Steven Universe proper with the Era 3 arc and Change Your Mind has left a lot of mixed reactions in the time since the animated series as a whole wrapped up with Steven Universe the Movie and Steven Universe Future. Many people felt the finale of the original series was rushed - and it was, but why? Well, thanks to the new art book End of an Era, we're able to piece together the bigger picture. So let's dive in to why the Ruby and Sapphire wedding, Reunited, ended up serving as a huge risk for Rebecca Sugar, the original "cancellation" for the show by Cartoon Network and the habits of the show's episodic nature in general. Why Steven changing the minds of Yellow Diamond, Blue Diamond and White Diamond may have felt too fast. This is why Steven Universe's Ending was RUSHED by Cartoon Network!

The only thing that really felt off to me was that we never saw Emerald again, I really liked the character as kind of a rival to Lars and wish we got to see more of her other than the one episode we saw of her.
I believe there are a bunch of fancomics about their misadventures if you want to look into those. Not as good as the real thing, but the best you'll get since the show is over.

Since Emerald was introduced, I saw the potential in a Lars of the Stars spin-off in a Saturday Morning/Villain of the week cartoon style. Emerald is the "big bad" and every week Lars and his crew need to get into X location and outsmart a high-ranking gem.
It actually just makes me sad how the show had to rush an ending all because of it’s wedding

Agreed,and company meddling which was the same fate it's rival show got and basically ruined the series for me this is why we need more time with these types of shows so another star vs the forces of evil season 4 doesn't happen again
At least we can look forward to more cartoons to show that representative thanks to their sacrifice

Yeah that sucked, ESPECIALLY WITH PEARL. That would have been really bug for her, fusing with Rose’s gem again. I imagine she would have ben nervous and I just- why did they rush it?

Pearl and Garnet aren’t the type to fuse with the child of their esteemed leader like Amethyst so it makes sense that it was only in dire circumstances that they were able to open up and connect on that level with someone they had probably put up defenses against (I imagined Pearl in particular would be hesitant to rewrite her memory of Rainbow Quartz with a new gem owner and would only do so in a situation like CYM)

I knew the ending was off or rushed. There's no reason for the biggest and the most powerful entity in the universe, White Diamond to become docile after witnessing the true Pink Diamond even though White Diamond has been heartless and dormant for eons and can put 2 of the biggest, powerful and currently active dictatorial leader, Yellow and Blue Diamonds onto their knees with a single stare. I don't mean to compare it to reality but it's just off-putting and often takes the immersion out of the experience.

I might as well agree. White Diamond does have a unique and intimidating design. She does have the potential to be the most threatening villain in the whole Steven Universe Media but is extremely underutilized and doesn't get much screen-time in the original series.
Yeah, I wanted more Diamonds. It feels unfinished with the ending rushed. We don't know enough about the "Normal" run of the society, nor White's personality. She's like a goddess. I don't think we'll get more either

I honestly liked change your mind as an ending, and I think it is a good ending for steven universe. people say the last arc was rushed, but I don't see how. I hated steven universe future, but I like the movie. However, I don't consider the movie canon.

it sucks they put Rebecca Sugar through so much, they gave her a hard time, but I learned so much through Steven universe including how to cope with mental health. I love this show. Rebecca really opened up new doors for the animation world; in the words of Steven "you can make a difference, you can make it right, you can make it BETTER, we don't have to fight"
If it were released 10 years earlier it wouldn't have had the problems with LBGT or the forced filler episodes. The biggest problem would have been the 15 Minute Episode Format. That's the irony with Cartoon Network they were a lot more willing to have riskier stuff back in those days as long as people watched it.

MegaMan StarForce wasn't able to broadcast back in 2007/2008 because of it having 15 Minute Episodes where the standard was 30 Minute Timeslots. As for LGBT there's nothing wrong with it, although again you have a powerful political minority who is opposed to it.

Considering how CN is running now, the channel does not have much of a future anyway. Although they already killed Toonami and Adult Swim years ago. CN is basically just going to be another Boomerang to HBO Max.
In the meantime, I will just stick to subbed anime. Have not cared for CN for years, so no loss if they die off.
Let’s hope Steven Universe doesn’t get rebooted.
because they have trash presidents, scott synder was correct in firing all those animators in 2008 up to 2009, then when he got replace with christina miler who we thought was gonna pave the way for cartoon network to make it great again in which she did, but she lied to us! they had them remove dc nation, cancel sym-bionic titan, cancel thundercats 2011, didn't even give us teen titans season 6! or hell didn't even give another season of redakai, then gave us ben 10 reboot ans when asked for ben 10, 000 and other stuf but noooo

Yeah, it REALLY sounds like the future of animation is in streaming services - ones where serialization is more feasible
I guess that is a bit true. You don’t wanna pressure writers into making a show that’d fit best in an episodic format, into one that’s serialized. Nevertheless, I think there’s definitely gonna be more serialized media and cartoons to come; the execs at Disney and CN had to have noticed how much people loved shows like Gravity Falls and SU.
I think there is room for both. There needs to be a balance.
@Tom Ffrench With streaming services you can have serialization, episodic, a combination of both. On tv, I feel like that's a lot more difficult, which is why we didn't really see a lot of that. Star Trek: Voyager got messed up a ton because of the need for episodic content.
You say serialization is overrated, I would say that the audience that wants it just wants it. The audience that doesn't, won't want that. Both ways of media are valid, and with streaming services, it becomes a lot more accessible for each group.

People like to tout that one specific form of media is the best way, meanwhile there are many valid forms of media.
That explains the lackluster character development in laters episode of adventure time 4-6, we don't see a lot of screentime with other characters interacting with others, good episodes but still
inb4 people blame townie episodes as if they "took up slots" when Cartoon Network didn't even want to let them do a story in the first place. There's a reason they only show random clips on their YT channel.

That's what drives me nuts. They SHOULD'VE known that the series was going to be serialized from the very beginning. They should've either let the writers write the damn show, or don't have the shows at all.
I don't mind townie episodes, I was just expecting simpsons level humor for them. I didn't mind when gravity falls did "filler" because it was very very entertaining.
The moral of the story is: streaming is better for serialized storytelling

Steven Universe was a show I was interested in from the beginning. The pilot peeked my interest. When it finally began with full length episodes I was excited. I love the way the show began and I stuck with it. My outlook on life may not be what it is today without it. I’m upset that the show couldn’t have more episodes to explore some arks like the Rhodonite story, but the show will always have a special place in my heart. Garnet will always be one of my favorite animated couples, I always knew Rose Quartz was Pink Diamond, and Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl and Steven will always be my favorite cast of main characters.
Ruby and Sapphire’s relationship is so fucking wholesome, Garnet herself is also my favorite character, she’s so wholesome and funny!
I think anyone could understand that.
Honestly, I found Garnet boring after season one and wished we could have Ruby and Sapphire in her place since they were more compelling in my opinion.

Glad Shows Like Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls got through Network Exceutives thick skulls audiences like Serialized storytelling.
I like serialized shows more than episodic ones because it entices me to keep watching and see where story goes and how the characters develop over time

Steven universe was such a good show i want it back
I do honestly believe that they should have done another season before the Steven Universe movie to tie up all the loose ends. For example, we didn't even get an episode where Lapis apologies to Peridot for leaving her, Amethyst joining the Crystal Gems, the whole Pearl-Bismuth romance storyline etc.
I swear to god, Lapis is hands down one of the most underdeveloped characters in the history of fiction. This character doesn't need an episode, but an entire miniseries for how they done her dirty.

This is the criticism I wanted to hear. White diamond had so many potencies to be the main villain, her powers and appearance was really intimidating and unlike the other diamonds she felt different, but no, they made her into a clingy grandma who's perfectly fine with being a good guy from a space Hitler within five minutes just to make Pink diamond the lazy scapegoat of the franchise. I can see why Yellow and Blue diamond had their redemption but with White it was.. it was just a bad move.

I wanted to see them mind control white diamond somehow and instead of making Steven that giant pink worm creature, I think they should have made it it's own character. That would have been way better. Also I find it kinda weird how Steven was depressed. Instead of that maybe make him lazy If he was going to have trouble controlling his powers maybe he should stop having them activated randomly and only in combat. If be was lazy then he would not want to master his new powers since there is no reason bc there isn't a threat until the rebellion shows ups

To me this all ties into the state of companies like CN where their pushing quantity over quality. Take teen titan's go for example., its literally a stupid show, that's all slap stick and rushed crap, yet because they can crank out so many episode do quickly. It's held CN's attention for as long and as well as it has for that reason. Over shows like SU where its plot driven and takes a little time to make each and every episode. Sow hen the show "peaks" in their PoV, they force it into obscurity and start pushing new shows out as rapidly as they can. Which starves other shows of both attention and funding, which means we get what we got with SU, to where there would me multiple month to year long breaks in new episodes, then it would be released all at once randomly. It sucked watching SU suffer and struggle like it did, then have it rushed so hard by CN I guess due to contractional based reasons. To where they may of had a contract with the SU crew and had to grant them the episodes that they did. Same applies to OK KO, a largely liked series, yet because it "peaked", they threw it in the dumpster and fed it scraps which made it fall off the map. Forced a rush to end the series and made it lose it's appeal due to it being rushed.
Disney seems like another offender to this, although its not as bad as CN is, in which they do give shows a good and fair chance outside of the numbers game CN likes to play. Yet still rush things when they want to push some new show out, and put shows like SVTFOE and wander over yonder on the back burner and starve the shows. Which again forces a rapid conclusion that doesn't solve a lot of plot lines developed, and leaves you hungry for more information as to the conclusion of them.
As for the LGBT issues, I do see that as being an issue given a lot of things in some foreign are censored heavily, or straight up banned. Which does at the end of the day cut into the profits the shows are able to learn given foreign interests are another source of funding and income for some of the shows. Which makes me feel like in a couple years Owl House will get the same treatment with a rushed finale, and starved series as time goes on with new episodes far and few between.
I just wish companies gave shows a chance, rather than looking at the numbers and going "whelp the ratings went down a little, time to pack it up" after the initial launch of a show. Given its to be expected the initial hype will achieve high rating, and then it will diminish and taper off a little, yet with some TLC can easily bring them up again.
No; Star vs. the Forces of Evil was not starved. The writers of that show got one more season than they were expecting. The writers plenty of time to write a good final season, but they blew it with a bunch of filler and shipping. Blame them, not Disney. Also, Disney currently has Big Hero Six the Series, Big City Greens, Ducktales 2017, Amphibia and Owl House. This is the strongest line up out of all three channels. Disney is doing great with cartoons

I'll admit the SU finale did feel rushed, and some people weren't happy with how it turned out but i think it ended the series on a good note, i mean yeah it was sad that Steven moved away from Beach City and left everything he built behind, but at least he was geting out there, seeing the world and Discovering things for himself i thought it was a good thing for him.
The finale was okay definitely wasn't the best or worst however. I just hate the Steven only perspective and how Jasper barely did anything in Steven Universe future and the fact that Steven was able to somehow heal her shattering not to mention the various plot points that never really went anywhere like Bismuth's crush on pearl, mean lapis and blue bird never returned etc.

Same. I felt the finale really wrapped things up, and the last big fight Steven had was with himself. Unfortunately, I tend to do the same things Steven did. If something really bothers me, I don't tell my loved ones what I'm going through, and push it down inside me. Then as the days go by, I push more of it down, and it eventually bursts when I can't contain it anymore. But like in the show, my loved ones were there help me cope. As future writer, I totally get how Rebecca Sugar wanted to keep the show and its character alive. I enjoy doing the same with the characters in the stories I write

This was a really good insight on the ending. For me the show as a whole is really special for me and it helped my through rough times. I love the ending of the show and I think they did a great job with what they had. The ending of the original series always amazes me and makes me emotional. The movie and future were also very nice additions since I got back into the show while future was still airing. I've witched the whole series throw almost 3 times this year. The music in this show is by far some of my favorite pieces of music ever. Every time I feel down, stressed, or angry I can just listen to the soundtrack and it makes me feel better. Okay I'm done gushing but I have really strong feelings about this show.

Before Rebecca Sugar and the Crewniverse gave us Stronger Than You, the closest we could get was Korra and Asami holding hands in the final episode of Korra.

I enjoyed the series as a whole but it is sad that it was rushed towards the ending along with the beautiful movie that came with it
the title gave me just a bit of hope- i’ve gotten over the ending, it was just a stepping stone for us all

this is wrong and important. Steven universe was one of the best and most loving, educational, good-for-kid shows. For instance, literally whenever i feel like irredeemably unlovable and deeply evil, I remember ''love like you'' and the story of steven universe and actually feel like I can return to love because of all the different characters in there. (Example: spinel, jasper, lapis, characters that have been through a lot and their parallels are often demonized in society). It is the first show made by a nonbinary woman showrunner on the network I believe and they literally made the most beautiful thing ever. It was the FIRST show!!! made by a nonbinary woman showrunner!!!! so they should have really given it the attention it deserved so that more could come after. They should have recognized its impact and importance back then and right now. It shouldn't have just gone ''oh click show is end never talking about it again'', they should treasure it because it did so much for them. they should have treated it way better

Is it still ok to refer to Rebecca Sugar with female pronouns? Because she did that to all of her nonbinary characters & I think it is regrettable she didn't explore the Gems being Non Binary more. Actually CN did show slight LBGT stuff in the 2000s through Toonami, it sucks that CN randomly chose to start giving in to racist homophobes. Naruto's Sexy Jutsu counts as Transgendering right? So much progress was made in the 90s & 2000s only for it to get thrown away before the decade ended. I only got into Steven Universe after learning there was a story & that it was trying to be like Anime & even the stuff it was trying to spread was stuff I needed without realizing.

Change Your Mind may was rushed, but I still love the ending. I mean: Rainbow Quartz 2.0, Sunstone, Obsidian, Steven and Pink Steven unite as one, Lars coming home, and changing the gems back to normal were all awesome scenes worthy to be in a series finale.
Honestly what really bothers me about CN rushing SU is that haters will just say "see? they wasted all that time in season 1 when they could've been focusing on story content". And ngl, I kinda agree with that mentality a bit now with the way the later seasons were rushed.
Funny thing is, we'll probably end up getting another SU series after the HBO Max Adventure Time series is over. Remember, CN only wants to have one or two heavy hitter shows at a time. Can't crowd the spotlight too much!
Its the reason why Infinity Train took so long to get green-lit. The "Cal Arts" style shows with amazing writing are too powerful for CN.

I assumed that was a basic thing most people learn about in school about like in plays but not everyone has the same background as me so let me explain.
In Change Your Mind you got so much of a good thing, Smokey Quartz again, Rainbow 2.0, Sunstone and the first ever animated appearance of Obsidian. When you do that, you're constantly changing the scenes, speeding up the narrative. Since those characters never got background episodes (except for Smokey, which is why I think it's rushed) you end up missing out on what could've had even greater emotional weight to them.
The Change Your Mind could've been an entire season and you would've gotten way more emotional weight out of it. You could've been eased into showing how their Homeplanet is falling apart, not just telling us what happened.
You gotta remember that SU was planned for 4 52 episode length seasons far far ahead of time, but when CN split season 2 into 2 and 3, you'd expect them to go to 7 seasons. But that never happened so that's why fans are disappointed by Change Your Mind, not because of what it is, but because of what it could be.
Hopefully that cleared up any confusion on my opinions on Change Your Mind. I enjoyed the fact we actually got those fusions and character arcs, it being rushed was the only issue.

It was a big sacrifice, but it did help other shows! Although it would've been nice if the series got a proper ending.

This hurts me so much. I'm so, SO grateful for everything the crewniverse did for us. I'm just so HURT that cartoon network would cut the show early, and strangle the Era 3 arc down into its barest of bones. And THEN be like "oh yeah you can have a movie, but there's no point to a movie if it isn't promoting something, have more episodes." like... why do I have to live in a world with these stupid rules???

I always knew CN was at least partially to blame for so much of the bullshit that happened to this show. The fact that it ended up as good as it did is impressive.
When it comes to the wedding it's hard to say if it's worth it. I love Steven universe i really do but the show really just kept falling apart, Steven Universe Future was so good to watch I loved watching the 2 episodes a week and it wasn't bad. In the moment I LOVED it! But the ending really needed to be handled better. It's hard for me to get into new shoes IPS and everything. So seeing something I loved so so much being... Failed? I don't know... I miss the show and hope a new Streaming based series or even mini series comes someday soon.

I always felt like it was a bit rushed but not rushed enough to not enjoy. It felt like there were a lot of questions that were left unanswered but knowing this and knowing how hard they worked to make sure we all got what we wanted makes me love this series so much more and makes me appreciate the creators a lot more. I feel like the unanswered questions aren't an issue anymore but what is an issue is the people that forced the show to stop. I hope we can get more Steven Universe in the future
