Today we'll be Unearthing The Tragic Tale Of Ooo's Forgotten Hero, Urgence Evergreen - An Adventure Time lore discussion.
Join me as we go over Urgence Evergreen, the most powerful of the wizards and elementals during his time. We'll be going over his character, his flaws which lead to his downfall, his connection to the lich and elementals. His prideful actions, the crown of evergreen, and his incredible power. We'll be going over exactly why he's so arrogant and how he was a tragic hero who failed to save his age, kin, and stop the lich from destroying billions. There's a lot to go over so let's get right into it in this Adventure Time Discussion.

So this video is gonna be odd, the thumbnail, using different software. my voice, using a mic for the first time. Editing, using a different editing software. Also it's not made from my phone. SO GIVE ME TIME TO ADJUST 😂
ANYWAY I won't keep ya and As ALWAYS I will see you in the next video Bye 👋
It was still awesome. Good job!!!

A powerful intellect being defeated by their own narcissism and hubris; a tale as old as time.
Literally
Sad but true.
Bluey Anarchy? o-o
Another tale as old as time? Abusive parents ALWAYS kicks the bucket BADLY
Vampire King: "Tell me: whats the one thing you've noticed about the world since you beat me all those hundreds of years ago"
Marceline: "Everything repeats over and over again. No one learns anything, because no one lives long enough to see the pattern, I guess".
Honestly, "Everything Stays" is a brilliant central theme of the whole series.
He was so adept with magic, but never fell to sadness or madness, at least in extremes like other characters because of it. Powerful character
He was mad up his own bunkus, does that count?
Every character is mad and sad
But the amount of sadness and madness depends on their Character and moral
@@freesteylerr082 Yep. Evergreen is probably mad and sad but at such low amounts it might not even count. And yet he uses ice magic better then any ice elemental.
Evergreen is an elemental though. I dont think they follow the same rules as wizards
@@BaneRain they're still connected to Magic ad wizardy
I really really love how Evergreen characterizes Ice King. When Gunther made the wish, he didn't become Evergreen, he became his own interpretation of him. If you notice, Evergreen has to use some symbols in order to shoot ice. Except, he never taught Gunther what they meant, and so Ice King shoots ice freely and without limits. I also believe Ice King is way more powerful than Evergreen, having created and maintained the entire Ice Kingdom, because Gunther perceives him as all powerful in the ways of magic. I also find the interactions between Ice King and Patience extremely interesting, as it's essentially her looking into a 1000s years old fun house mirror of a past version of herself. And it's such a distorted image at this point that she doesn't even recognize it.
Don’t forget that the Ice King is exactly a parody of Evergreen. Gunther only saw him as a blue skinned guy with a long beard who shoots ice left and right, and bosses everyone around.
@@veronicapiccinini7956 I kinda can't blame Gunter for that view
Ice king is far more powerful when it comes to ice magic. But he isn't as strong when it comes to manipulating magic as a whole.
@@bestaround3323 Good point. Then again, Ice King did manage to get his hands on the Demonic Wishing Eye, so he obviously did manage to keep at least some of that artifact hoarding nature
@@bestaround3323 his main weakness is that he's batshit insane. If he was still Simon but kept all the powers he would be extremely powerful.
I like the contrast in both Ice Elementals way of dealing with the Lich
Urgence wanting to destroy the comet immediately and Patience wanting to wait it out
Your brilliant
i guess evergreen's past traumatized Patience and she just wanted to let it slide
Woah, that's nuts!
It’s literally in their names;
URGENCE Evergreen: He prioritized Urgency in his attempt to stop The Comet
PATIENCE St. Pim: She froze herself and PATIENTLY waited for the Great Mushroom War to pass
@@alirezaomrani7650too much patience that several wars n sht had happened lmao
His plan hinged on people's innate ability to do good. That was the entire point of the wish magic, he wholeheartedly, unapologetically believed that when it came down to it EVERYONE would wish to save everyone else. A part of his hubris was believing in the good of people, in a way. Ig that his mistake was in not teaching that belief to Gunther and being a true mentor.
Pretty much gave human like consciousness to a dino only to make him his slave. No very all good of him.
@@RegularFlyGuy I think that's the idea. It wasn't out of love of everyone else, but merely the most logical choice. Like "of course everyone would wish for this, it's simply within their best interests to do so!"
He was so focused on the "bigger picture", the saving of the whole world, that he forgot about the little things, like teaching. Passing down knowledge and belief.
@@superguy9834He was a d!ck to Gunther imo oof-
Ah
Poor Gunter i just want to hug him😢
Same, dude just wanted a dad 😢
Poor gunter saved evergreen and still got bullied
Right!? He kinda reminds me of Mr Fox, in a way.
I would love to see a au story where Evergreen succeeded with his plan. Imagine the version of Ooo that would come from that. Would the Mushroom Bomb still be created? Would the characters we all know and love still be born? Would humans still be a thing? What type of creatures would the Dinosaurs mutate into thanks to the bomb?
I should do what if videos 🤔
@@TrueLocalEnthusiast what if videoes like What If Betty wears the ice crown instead of Simon?

@@TrueLocalEnthusiast my influence is still here after all these months
@@therandomjack961 Yes, Ice Queen Betty.
He was too busy divining the stars that he failed to see the rock below tripping his feet.
I appreciate this video. In the episode it’s easy to write Evergreen off is being a horrible person because of how he treated Gunther and ignored the other Elementals. But he WAS a very gifted wizard and Elemental, and was trying to save billions of lives on the planet. His tragic flaws being his inability to collaborate with others and overestimating his own abilities
I wonder what would Simon Petrikov react to Evergreen's cruel treatment of Gunther the Dinosaur as well as learning the kind of person Evergreen truly is and learning Gunther's true origins.
Right
@truelocalweirdo The Thing about Evergreen is that Ultimately his fate was intertwined with his student. If he had bothered to teach Gunther Magic none of this would have ever happened. But Ultimately his arrogance and dismissiveness of his apprentice led to his downfall, and resulted in his image being tarnished and tainted for the years to come as the Ice King.
Alternatively, if Gunther the Dinosaur was more serious about how Evergreen treated him, I'd imagine Gunther using the crown's wish to give Evergreen a well-deserved punishment for his selfish, arrogant jerk and not teaching him magic. Also, he would call Evergreen a one great jerk because the way he treated him. Like how Spongebob called Mr. Krabs a one great jerk for not making him the boss for the Krusty Krab 2.
something that i found pretty interesting about evergreen is that he seems very sane and yet is one of the most talented magic users in history
Huh, yeah true. I mean we all know magic madness and sadness are incredibly linked... Did we just not see enough of Urgence to see his madness and sadness? Were we only privy to a tiny portion of it that made him look sane to us? Did magic change through history? - I mean we already know it ebbs and flows, maybe its linkage to madness and sadness ebbs and flows too?
I would like to see an interaction between Simon Petrikov and Urgence Evergreen. I would like to see Simon learning what kind of a person Urgence truly is and what would Simon react to seeing Gunther the Dinosaur's origin and Urgence cruel treatment of him.
Considering gunter and Simon (also santa) talk to each other in the crown I imagine they have talked about evergreen.
Still missed opportunity.
Right
Urgence Evergreen was not a hero, but that doesn't mean he didn't try to be. The ice elementals we know of have never done anything that would be considered "good", mostly because they didn't try. This doesn't mean that by nature they are all bad, but the reason most of them do what they do is because of greed or selfishness. I don't think Urgence is an exception by any means, yes he tried to save the earth and good on him for that, but it was mostly just to preserve his own life. He didn't really care about the other life forms that were present, just look at how he treated Gunther.
If Simon had seen how Evergreen treated Gunther the Dinosaur and learn of Gunther's origins, what would Simon react to it? Do you think Simon would try to ask Gunther the Dinosaur that Evergreen is a bad person and doesn't care about him.
I don't think we should categorize their wish for self preservation as selfish.
I can see that@@ktm1125 , however that still doesn't mean that he isn't selfish at all. Despite telling Gunther that he was like a son to him, he consistently treats him more like a servant, not letting him ride the palanquin and instead forcing him to walk, making him find water for him, only for Gunther to come back and see that he already found water, so he didn't bother letting Gunther know that he already found some... And that's only how he treats Gunther. Yes, self preservation is not selfish, but the only life he really had in mind when making the crown, was his own.
Again, the point of this comment isn't to accuse the ice elemental, nor the bearer of the crown of being a selfish individual, it's mainly to identify that beings who possess such power, inadvertently inherit the selfishness that comes with representing that individual element.
I think he just had way too big of a scope on his own life. He didn’t care about Gunther because he just thought his time was too important to care about 1 little dinosaur rather than all of life
For someone that's this intelligent and knowledgeable you'd expect Evergreen to be considerate of just about everything, yet here he is overlooking all the problems that would eventually lead to his downfall.
Well, He put all his skill points in talent and knowledge but less on Luck and Wisdom
@@iken1308reddit gold worthy comment
It’s a Greek tragedy.
Too be fair in order to have the will to action that Evergreen had you kind of have to overlook a lot of possibilities. He was certain of his actions and the rightness of them to an insane degree. That requires you to not consider all possibilities because if you did you simply wouldn’t have that ability to act promptly.
a lot of geniuses suck at socializing so it really isn't that far off.
I've had a lot of book smart friends who'd just completely fumble the bag on social situations, you'd practically have to handhold them in social events.
I actually don't think that the crown would've worked for Evergreen. Chatsberry's dialogue and Betty's wish further influence this belief. The crown would *only* grant your *truest, deepest* wish, nothing else. In the same way the crown refused to grant betty's wish, it would've refused to grant evergreens. Because just like Betty's truest wish was to keep her true love safe, Evergreen's truest wish was to stay alive himself. The crown would've known he didn't care if the comet hit, only that HE survived. It would've made him invincible, but everything else still would have died. Just like it didn't wish Golb away, because Betty's true wish was to keep Simon safe. Chatsberry was ultimately right, wish magic sees through your outward desire and will only grant your inner desire.
It is like Evergreen wanted to wish for Immortality.
Nope. Betty did not get her wish, because she was directly f-in with someone beyond Wish Magic. In fact, Prismo states outright, it's interpretation and not intent that fumbles wish magic.
Betty was only denied her wishes because she was inside Golb, the crown isn't more powerful than Golb and she couldn't destroy it with the crown like she was trying to. She could only become it.
@@demi4156 Wait... But Golb is a cosmic being.... What if he always remembered his entire life as Betty and... Oh, oh man that would basically mean Golbs basically experiancing all of existance at the same time.... including the times he ate itself....
Great theory
Since the Elementals have access to their past lives I wonder if Evergreen and Patience ever met/interacted. If they did what was it like? Evergreen would most likely see Patience as annoying and too hyper active, while Patience would probably see Evergreen as too serious and a failure since he couldn't succed in his plan (While ignoring the fact that her plan backfired completely)
It's possible, but one thing that should be noted is that she inherited MANY of his traits. I think they'd somewhat "get along" so to speak 😅
i mean in comparison, patience comes off as a lot more selfish bc urgence came up with a solution for everyone despite their protests whereas patience went ahead and saved herself
Peter Petrikov/Cold Wizard: I will have my revenge, Evergreen. Someday, I will expose to my father of what kind of a person you are and reveal to my dad of kind of treatment you give to Gunther the Dinosaur as well as revealing his origins, I swear it.
If anyone is asking who Peter Petrikov is, Peter is the son of the Ice King and Betty. He is a half-human ice wizard. Also, for infecting me with your personality traits.
They actually did!
We know Patience met Evergreen the same way PB met Chatsberry. In their own mind while communicating with a past reincarnation. Most likely when she needed advice for the elemental purification spell. We know this because she has a drawing of him, on her massive crazy plan wall we see in the episode she "attacks" with the ice salt cellars.
@@TrueLocalEnthusiast Actually not only possible, but very much canon.
Man I always found that ending where Gunther becomes a bastardized version of evergreen and just shouts while the world ends, very disturbing.. When I was younger it stuck with me for a loooong time..
With evergreen one phrase comes to mind. “The ends justify the means.”
For the most part he was right in this specific use of the phrase (ripping out the eyegems of a monster and restraining his 3 colleagues against their will to stop planetary annihilation: Fair enough) but when it came to gunter I don’t think evergreen ever thought of his end so evergreen just didn’t cares about what he did to gunter as he was his lackey.
He was so quick to action he never fully understood the consequences of his own actions. He knew what would happen if they went right because “of course they’d go right, I’m urgence Mcfcking evergreen.” But never considered what would happen if his plans went wrong.
Original Gunter has the same voice actress (yes, actress) as Bobby from King of the Hill.
Gunther just wanted to be cared about man, at least hold da bois hand :[
That's what I'M SAYING
Another BANGER by TrueLocalGOAT, single handedly carrying the Adventure Time community.
Thanks man 😊
Would be cool to analyze the dead worlds if you're interested, I've not really seen anyone take a look at them even though they're to me one of the most interesting parts of the series
Time to watch together again!
It’s also crazy to think how much the ice elemental is like bubblegum princess. She’s super controlling, dismissive, and manipulative for the purpose of what she considers the greater good.
I wonder if the catalyst comet is like Golb, inevitable and resistant to wish magic.
Well they basically are, they are physical embodiments of an aspect of reality and possess near immunity to most magic and can't be permanently erased. Seems about right
Well if they're like Golb, the only possible way for someone with wish magic to change it's destiny is by simply fusing himself with the comet
@@iken1308 Scary given that several entities throughout history more of less did this exact thing to try and neutralize the Lich.
@@iken1308 nah. Betty fused with Golb because she "Wish for the power to keep Simon safe". It's not the only thing that could have halted golb, but it was the interpretation the wish took to satisfy Betty.
@@raze2012_examples? I'm interested in the lore but never fully watched the show.
The crown was constructed with a ghostly circuit designed to become one with the mind of its first wearer and fueled with the energy of the power gems, Evergreen intended to use it to destroy the comet but was unable to and the responsibility fell to Gunther, However, Gunther's deepest wish was not to destroy the comet, it was to be a wizard like Evergreen or rather a version of how Gunther saw Evergreen (a crazy wizard who shot ice magic and scolded his apprentice Gunther), so The crown turns anyone who wears it (after the death of its previous wearer) into a mad immortal ice wizard.
just realized dino gunther may be a reflection or past life of fern. always rejected no matter how hard he tried and all he wanted was to be recognized by the only person he idolized/came from (since evergreen adopted and mutated him)
I like how every incarnation of Elemental is a separate person. What makes them an elemental is not physical, it's inherent connection to the element that causes them to embody it. Which in nature is more metaphysical. Hence why PB can not recreate it.
4:16 this truly says it all as that wish was so powerful if can fuse with GOLB
the fact that so much of adventure time came from a single bird boi is hilarious to me and I dont know why
That's a way to describe it 😅
This is super random, but its my Headcanon that Evergreen made the Crown out of the same stuff Prizmo's Time Room is made of.
It would be cool
@@TrueLocalEnthusiast Of course it would, it made the Ice Crown for Glob's sake
prismo to this day wonders why theres a few bricks of his room missing
@@mikadosannoji553 I love the idea that Evergreen wanted to make a device from a material that could grant any wish, while not noticing that a literal Wish Master was right inside of the place where he got it from.
Been watching your videos lately to catch up on the lore, stopped watching adventure time way back at stakes, and even then i missed a LOT of episodes, so im glad ive been keeping up thanks to your vids
Glad you like them! Happy I'm getting people back into the show just a bit
Nice video man it's really scary. Adventure times lore is sooo crazy! I love it but how scary is that last scene. An entire world ending and the last guy to stop it loses his mind.
Urgence Evergreen is certainly one of my favorite characters in the show despite being present in, what, one episode? Solely because he’s so connected to the lore of the Adventure Time universe and brings a beginning point to a few important things.
One of those things being my definite favorite character, Simon Petrikov, and the state that he ends up in.
The lore of this show is so unbelievably interesting.
did gunther start an ice age as the comet hit or what happened? did absolutely everyone die and bacteria had to evolve their way back up?
I love how not even the crown manifests a version of him inside, it is like an insult to his egotistic nature
He never wore the crown so it wouldn't have a version of him in it
@@skinnyj123 yup, I know that, but what I meant was the crown never acknowledges him as its creator
I love the small pieces of stories we get of the past from the entire Adventure Time lore, it’s a pleasure to piece them all together and to also see the previous incarnations of our favorite characters
I've said this time and time again but its very nice of people like you to show other people that some douchebag of a character still has some heart example given is Evergreen with his compassion towards others.
Evergreen is the embodiment of "Pride cometh before the fall"
What's interesting about Evergreen is that he doesn't really seem all that strong compared to the Ice King. He's powerful for sure but, for example, Evergreen has a small tower, meanwhile Ice King has an entire mountain. Ice King can potentially cast massive blizzards, meanwhile Evergreen doesn't seem able to do that. Evergreen is, by far, the most skilled though. I'm guessing this is to display just how much of a power spike the crown provides to it's user.
It’s good to hear you’re going to be uploading more, I been enjoying these videos a lot
Glad to hear it! I gotta get back on track I've been gone too long
I like to think that the Elementals and any creatures that were tied to the gems were not from this Earth. They could be either banished or stranded there from the distant future or another dimension. Also, the book of Enchiridion has access to the gems. We are dealing with a lot of magic and technology here. Did anyone noticed the toaster in Evergreen's study room? 2:07
Awesome video ❤ and love the thumbnail hehe
Thanks 😆
It's a bit rough(Not used to PhotoPea) but there's way more options than canva
Nah man ur doing so well ur videos brings me joy
It’s definitely just WISHful thinking, but I like to believe Urgence really DID intend to teach Gunter, and that if there wasn’t a Massive World-Ending Comet, he would’ve. Although that also hinges on how old Gunter is. Mayhaps if Urgence did get his wish, only too late, he could’ve convinced his past self to behave differently
i went over the videos you made about magic and the cosmic imagination and the reality of adventure time. it got me thinking about a few things like how the adventure time cosmology is similar to the lovecraft world with the "cosmic imagination" mirroring "Azatoth" as the dreamer that controls all within the dream but the difference being that the AT universe can still survive if the dreamer wakes as long as anyone still perceives it but Azatoth is the end all be all
Second, i'm kind of a vs battle buff so i kept on looking for ways to beat golb without directly involving the cosmic imagination
correct me if i'm wrong but "The Multiverse is a Consensus Reality shared by the Minds of all Sentient Beings" and as such its laws are subject to the perceptions of said sentient beings that now being referred to as magic and the scale of that magic depending on whether the caster is able to realize that they are in fact figments of the dreamer within the dream.
Onto the theoretical stuff. suppose there was a person with the most one track mind focused on becoming the most powerful being alive or someone with such a strong mind that the realization of non existence doesn't even faze them, couldn't such a person be able to bend the laws of the universe to such a degree that they are able to rival and maybe overpower golb. i'd like to point some things that allude to this conclusion, betty being able to fuse with golb, prismo's powers even while just being a dream within the dream and other things that allude to strong feelings and desires being proportional to power (maja using pb's pj's as a catalyst to bring back darren).
I like your theory about the potential for someone to get to a point where they could overpower Golb, but even in your description, you're describing someone who is not mentally healthy: in order for someone to not even be fazed by the realization of nonexistence, they would have to have nothing at all to lose. That sounds to me like an exceptionally broken and distanced person with no healthy relationships with anyone. I think that's why the AT universe continues to exist, because anyone with the mental and relational capabilities of getting to a place where they actually Could permanently get rid of Golb or the Lich, they would have to be so "mad" and sad they wouldn't even be able to think clearly enough to do it.
Sry if I'm repetitive I'm v sleepy lol
Only reason I remember him is because he has my favorite design of any Adventure Time character and I ended up drawing him and loved how it came out
Ironically enough, Evergreen had a few good points with Gunther, (Not entering a room with a creature who could easily kill him, treating him harshly to harden the aforementioned boy, etc), where he failed, was being petty about it and actively antagonizing the kid instead of being constructive about it (Example: "Gunther, you failed. He'll melt your dome."
It's funny irony how his current ice incarnation is called Patience
Evergreen should have trained up Gunter as an actual apprentice ah well.
evergreen was not a hero, he was narcissistic, abusive, sloppy, and selfish. I thought that was apparent. It was clear he had deep ulterior motivations for making a wish making crown, and how he created and treated Gunter is just wrong. It's more like a Greek tragedy, where his central character flaw did him in. You call him intelligent but his "intelligence" was just used in self justification for using the comet crisis for self serving purposes. I would say he has showed no compassion, compassion requires empathy, Evergreen has none
It's a shame I had to scroll so far down to find this comment. Weird apologist video for a bastard
love the adventure time vids man ^_^
I just realized that Farmworld Finn is likely a reincarnation of Gunther.
Why
This is actually the origin of the Ice king's crown. very interesting
Props to Tom Kenny for his James Woods impression for Evergreen
Winter prince is the result of a wish for Betty to stay with Simon. She learns she could transfer the madness to someone else who needed to be immortal. Became friends with princess bubblegum working in the project to heal Simon. Then Betty betraying Bubblegum and hitting her with the madness transfer. Bubblegum kills Betty but tragically winter prince is not just Simon with powers he is more alike to evergreen was in real life.
Evergreen is a classic character suffering from "the smartest man alive" sindrome
The evergreen apisode creeped me the fuck out when i was young
Especially that scene where he turns the other elementals to ice with his weird goofy mouvements
I recently finished the entire series and have been binging your videos since. It's so nice to have someone talk about it despite it ending some time ago. It's like I'm late to the party but it's still going! Keep up the good work my man. You deserve all your subscribers and heres to many more 💜
yeah dude the way all that ended was absolutely fucking insane.
It was sad knowing they died 😢
Awesome video dude
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I do think Evergreen embodies a lot of the problems with a lot of the heroes in the series. Although his quest is seemingly futile, it was driven by the same self centered quest for heroics that Finn, Jake, Joshua, and even Billy had. The old "I'll save the day, no matter the cost". He's probably more of a tragic hero than Billy, seeing as that Evergreen's failure doomed countless lives.
I don’t even have anything to add except I love your videos and all your adventure time theories and opinions and just overall how you view the world and its people. I’ve not seen a video of yours where I didn’t disagree with you or I just absolutely loved what said lol your videos are just so great
If only he had more patience for Gunter and showed him more kindess, maybe Gunter could've stopped the comet
The thing I remember is every Universe with an ice crown originated in this universe where urgent Evergreen created the crown
This is more unrelated than the phrase "Hamburger Chess Water" but is the reason why Balthus has a crab hand a joke on the fact that the disease Crabs burns?
Balthus' body can be seen as a combination of the main characters from Futurama: Fry's red and spiked hair, Leela's cyclops eye, Zoidberg's lobster claw, Professor Farnsworth's old, wrinkly body, and Bender's shiny metal ass. Nurse Pound Cake is shown to at one point grow a crab hand not too different from Balthus' pincer as well, which could be related
It's amazing how everything just clicks at the end (in adventure time I mean)

I have to wonder if Evergreen’s Plans went exactly as he wanted, what would a Wish like his even do to the Crown and it’s Host? Gunther’s Wish to become like Evergreen turned him and all who wore the Crown after him into a Pseudo or Artificial Ice Elemental whilst imbuing the Crown with enough Elemental Ice Magic to engulf the entire planet in an Ice Age, so what would the Wish to get rid of the Catalyst Comet turn Evergreen and all who come after him into? And what powers would it imbue the Crown with? There’s no way it would just blip the Comet out of existence there has got to be some kind of monkey’s paw.
It’s wild that the first ice elemental died trying to save the world… and then the last ice elemental is the first to refuse to help and peace’s out… to “live” forever in an ice tomb of her own making.

@@TrueLocalEnthusiast Well now I HAVE to.
I wouldn't call Evergreen a hero, or really a villain. He is honestly neutral at most. He wanted to protect himself from the comet, which isn't selfish, it's human nature. However he is arrogant with a complex of sorts. He is driven and doesn't listen to others or care about them for that much.
He acknowledged the other Elementals but never truly considered their words, going as far as to immobilize them immediately.
He stole Gunter's egg and modified it to give him intelligence, but while he did this to take him as an assistant, he simply just made him a minion.
