the movie was sweet and all, but tell me why they put such emphasis on deuce's glasses stopping him from looking at clawdeen or making teacher think he's asleep when the man is not wearing sunglasses lmao
It would have worked if his glasses were darker like in the original and you cant see his eyes through them.

The weirdest part of the "we hate humans" angle is that many monsters started out as humans. For example: Cleo. Her backstory is that she was a human and then was mummified. For the ghost characters, were they born ghosts, or were they humans who died? Such a weird way to restart the franchise
If we think about real world, humans sometimes have a problem with each other, is how prejudice works. We always hade this hate against people from a different country or race, and also disabled and LGBTQ people. Is only fair to assume that, as long you aren't human anymore, they would hunt you down.
I agree with you, but also I feel like that was a problem in Gen-1 too? Everyone in the school had issues with Holt at because of hatred for humans, even though the same would have been the case there, with ghosts and zombies being x-humans
@@pixelfairy6128 Yeah one of the movies was literally about humans and monsters hating each other(Ghoul rule if I’m not mistaken) and as a kid I was kinda unconvinced by it. Like, Cleo looks basically just like a human and mummies used to be humans anyways, but she still hates humans? I may not have the plot entirely correct, but I wouldn’t say that this began in gen 3 even remotely.
But seriously, so many monsters begin as humans that it doesn’t make sense. Humans hating monsters does, but not the other way around.

I'm still weirded out by the drama that comes from Clawdeen being half human, since isn't being part human a big part of werewolves? Literally the "were" part?
The problem is that it wasn't like that in the original series. Monster high would've excepted her regardless. My problem is that they didn't have a brownskin girl play Clawdeen.
I know right like I like the half human idea for this but they made a weird pick for the monster to have that.

I do appreciate the film didn’t do the cliche third act falling out between Clawdeen and Frankie and Draculaura. Instead Clawdeen tried to run away after thinking she ruined her friends’ lives and as soon as they figure out she’s gone they go straight to the human world to find her. I thought that was very sweet.

I have a lot of problems with the creation of the movie mostly with the racist director and the erasure of nonverbal people with Goulia. My main gripe with the movie is that they got rid of a character that LITERALLY is a human and monster named Jackson. In the episode that Jackson is introduced he isn’t really outcasted for being part human (yes some bully’s push him over, BUT deuce invites him over and says that monster high is about accepting everyone) Jackson’s character wasn’t about him being part monster it was about WHO that monster was. As a biracial kid, growing up I connected a lot with Jackson, he thought he had to choose between being a monster or being a human, which I related to a lot. Watch the movie it seemed like they made clawdeen part human just for the sake of it, it seemed like their was no consideration to why is she human and how does that effect her everyday. Maybe that is just by biase for the older monster high and maybe because I am now more comfortable with being biracial. It’s fine if you disagree on me with this point.
In G1, Ghoulia is actually speaking in Zombie, an in-universe language in MH

What's funny is that a witch character would've been the ideal main character for the story. They're hated by monsters because they're entirely human, but aren't they hated by humans as well because of their witchcraft? I still like the movie even though they changed a lot of things. The set design is great. I also love how Frankie's actor played as Frankie 'cause of the movements and how excited they are to learn new things.
I assume Draculara doing witchcraft and monsters not liking witches is setting up for the witch characters to return
Personally, I would've been fine with the school accepting witches but Dracula not liking them. That would've made Draculaura's problems feel more personal imo
They also resolved Draculaura’s arc (if you can call it that) too quickly in my opinion. Coming from an Asian family I know pressure put on by generations before you doesn’t go away that easily, especially not generational prejudice.

Unpopular opinion im not TOTALLY against the idea of cleo and deuce breaking up because i could see their original counterparts potentially breaking up because they're growing up and they're just going to be going in different places with different end goals, and i dont think either would want to stop the other from truly achieving that. However, what i AM totally against is pairing deuce with clawdeen of all people not only has clawdeen been hinted at being a lesbian for several years now, even if she wasnt they have no chemistry other than being friends via proxy of cleo and frankie
I see clawdeen more as asexual or demisexual but i agree it's kinda weird to see clawdeen and deuce dating
Clawdeen has some major romatic tension with Draculaura in this movie. She has some good bff vibes with Deuce but not romatic.
She was originally supposed to be not boy crazy, there was a head cannon that the creator liked of her being a lesbian but it never happened. We were only told this after he left monster high. Kiyomi was the lesbian from the get go and it was strongly hinted that she had a crush on draculaura.

My biggest disappointment for me is that if this movie has anything to do with the animated series, my hopes for Jackson/Holt coming back have been dashed. But other than that, I found it not terrible. I really liked Frankie and while Abbey was barely in it I like her too. I really hope she gets a doll.
I also think it’s interesting that you find the ending bad given that just turning the bad guy to stone is how they stopped Van Hellscream & Crabgrass at the end of Fright On!
As a fellow Jackson/Holt fan, I am also very sad that there is Zero chance of him returning. I'm very angry they replaced him with the villain dude and decided to give his insecurities about only being part monster to Clawdeen.
it's odd the show is using the same ideas as the movie but from what the sneak peak EP showed the show is ignoring the events of the movie like it never happened

Jackson/Holt isn't the sons of the original Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde though. Their mother is Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde's daughter. Jackson and Hyde can still return as Komos' half-nephews or something.
What I don't get is why Heath and Abby were part of the climax. Draculaura, Clawdeen, and Frankie called Cleo so it makes sense she was there. Lagoona was with Cleo so she tagged along. Cleo called Duce. Lastly Ghoulia has been chilling in the graveyard for half her scenes, so it makes sense that she'd be there as well. But Heath and Abby? The only reason is fan-service. Plot-wise it doesn't make any sense for them to be there.
I do believe at the dinner thing he was also there with Deuce when he got the call from Cleo. But even then it doesn't explain why he tagged along cause I don't recall Heath speaking to any of the cast besides Deuce. And Abby was just an afterthought for the movie honestly

I do find it sad they forced the romance between Deuce and Clawdeen, to be honest, why? 1- To avoid making her a Lesbian or even BI, 2- To still cater to the homophones that always complained about the doll line from the start (remember they are still the same people, just 12 years later).
I truly hope Frankie doesn't become the token LGBT+ character (I know in G3, Deuce has 2 moms now, but if they haven't showed up yet, my point is still valid).
Another reason they went for Deuce is because he is the only “main manster“ aside from Clawd, and Clawd is Clawdeen's brother, so yeah.
But I do think they should bring Cleo and Deuce back together, because their arc explored something that is still very relevant - couples of different races and how one family can be very prejudice (it's already irritating enough that in the Haunt Counter line they hint that Deuce cheated on Cleo, and it's stupid beyond belief).
People always glance over mattel forcing sanders to take out lgbt rep he wanted to add to claim g3 is more diverse for having frankie be trans and i hate it-if rainbow capitalism wasnt so marketable mattel would instantly have frankie be cis again like they forced sanders to make nathan and valetine straight

I wouldn’t call Frankie the token lgbtq+ character when they are one of the main ghouls but I do get what you mean. Hopefully we get more openly lgbtq+ characters and even more romances throughout gen 3. Also Clawdeen still needs a female love interest lol, I will die on this hill.
@@sapphic.flower Who knows, maybe we will get Nathan and Valentine as openly gay characters in the animated reboot. Many people headcanon Clawdeen as Asexual because she isn't particularly interested in anyone, but the creator do like the idea of her being a lesbian. If Mattel doesn't at least make her a lesbian, I will make sure to make a fanfiction with a new female OC as a love interest and start a riot.

Frankie was my favorite part of the movie. I was worried they might've made them like... too childish and dumb, but the crew seemed to go the route of having them neurodivergent. As someone who is autistic, I related to them so so much and so dearly wish I had a character like them growing up to relate too. The line where they go 'It feels like everyone was given a guide to interacting with people but I never got it' gah, I felt that. I hope others who struggle similarly can look at Frankie and see themselves in them, and realize it is 100% completely okay to be entirely themselves because there are those like them as well as those that will love them.
I'm autistic too and I couldn't stand them in the beginning, in the end I tolerated them, but I dunno if it was bad acting?? Or bad directing???? But it felt off especially since they weren't just different because, it was also a punchline low-key. So I didn't fw it
i agree but, i wish they had kept the characters the same & created new characters like the OG monsters kids who are now attending MH.
if they wanted they could have made a new charcter who is Frankie's child, act exactly the same as new Frankie did in the movie, nothing would have changed the plot or the movie.
i understand what you're saying about Frankie, i agree ! i'm autistic & i love neurodivergent representation, as well as LGBTQIA+ representation, i just don't agree with how they completely changing OG characters to get said representation.
i hate that they gave Frankie, Draculara & Lagoona whole new personalities, but what really boils my blood is the fact they took a canon lesbian, & broke up one of the best couples to give her a male love interest.
if they genuinely cared about the fans, characters or representation they would have made new characters instead of completely changing the OG characters & their core personalities.
i know i hate change, (that's a part of my tism & why i'm so passionate about these changes lol), but i still think they should have created new characters because they made this reboot without the old fans in mind, they made it purely to cater to new fans, if they are catering to new fans who don't know the characters why not create new characters ?
to me, revamping the old characters & changing most things makes no logical sense, as new characters & stories already building on the lore & OG characters, would make them more money especially in the long haul.
both old & new fans have brand new characters to fall in love with & grow attached to.
creating new characters is a win/win/win, the old fans have new content, the new fans get introduced to & invested in all these new & OG charcters, lore & old content, making the old & new content received well by a wider audience, causing the content to be in higher demand, therefore making the company more money.

@@rainbowglass8319 I skimmed your comment but I agree. I don't see the point in keeping the characters names if you change EVERYTHING about them. Their personality, their appearance, they're back story, their family dynamics, the characters have nothing in common any more. The main wolf could have been one of Clawdeen's siblings since she has so many if you wanted to tie it back to the main series.
For example the resident evil games are still going but there have been some remakes recently. Jill Valentine looks different now, which makes sense for video games as graphics improve but she's still Jill, short brown hair, blue eyes, lean and a little toned, about 5"7 ish. Her personality is a little different but that can be counted as improved character writing and fleshing out her character, because while I love Resi the character writing in the early games was a little corny. Now her character is more fleshed out with the fact that she very clearly now has PTSD from the first game, and the way she is described as being that you see more in the later games like Revelations shows through earlier on, how serious about her work she is but she still cares about people which makes sense. She's 24 and part of an elite police task force while also being ex military and having medical science training, that's a lot for someone so young, showing how determined she is early on makes sense. At the end of the day she's still Jill.
If you described these characters to me I wouldn't have recognized them.
I related to Frankie during G1. G3 just butchers my younger years. I say this as an autistic person, that I hate what *they* have become. I found no one to relate to.

The quality and style Nickelodeon produces almost feels like it falls in or towards "camp" which honestly, works pretty well for a series like Monster High. I'm here for it. Definitely falls in that category of "it wasn't necessarily good, but it was a fun time," and there's nothing wrong with things that are like that. Not everything has to be a masterpiece to just be enjoyed. Sometimes you just WANT to sit down with a shitty movie and hang out.
Same energy to me as watching Camp Rock like oh boy is it kinda cringe but it's just a nice time! I haven't watched this film yet, but I feel like I might have to sit down with it when I'm feeling that kind of energy of wanting to watch something adjacent to stuff like Camp Rock, lmao. Just a mindless nice time; maybe have it on in the background while doing other things.
Also, I have nothing else to add to the conversation but I wanted to compliment the haircut, though I'm sure you've had it for a long while now, lol.

The biggest thing is that she didn't HAVE character in this movie. Ghoulia (ironically) had more lines than Lagoona. So saying her character hasn't changed much is more to say SHE NEEDS TO BE GIVEN CHARACTER.

In G1 of Monster High, there were characters who were straight up born ghosts from two ghost parents without ever having been a living human and that was just accepted, lol. I think they wanted to keep that "don't think too hard about it" energy, but making humans a target of discrimination in G3 sort of forces that confusion to manifest.
My big compliment to this movie is in the costuming for Frankie SPECIFICALLY - I loved the mix of preppy and alt styles they wore, the fact that there's pretty much always some silver hardware detail on them somewhere, and ESPECIALLY the fact that they are always wearing big chunky platform shoes! Reminds me of how when I first got my platform Docs, my brother literally called them my "Frankenstein boots," lol. Also imo their character was just delightful.
YES! I loved the direction they took for their aesthetic! Out of all the dolls they’re my favorite because they’re still preppy, but it has that spark (HA pun) that says that it is a new generation.
I have mixed emotions about this movie but most importantly I did cringe a lot, especially with the whole Deuce and Clawdeen love interest part which distressed me to sit through 🤢. Draculara's personality or character change is going to take some getting used to, much like other characters and their new looks like Lagoona for instance who isn't Lagoona BLUE anymore.
The first episode of the cartoon is out and she's nothing like the movie !! She's very sweet and almost shy in a way, very friendly to Clawdeen and Frankie
She isn't blue because kids who were brought in to view the dolls don't like blue and wanted pink.

When it comes to toy marketing it matters what the majority likes. Lagoona was named Blue because of the Blue Lagoon/Blue Sea. Her sister is pink. Plus, the OG Lagoona was the doll thst actually sold the least and made the least sells.

Ok so around 10:15 the scene where the statue almost kills Cleo, that scene probably would have made much more sense if it was trying to kill Mr. Komos. As if it's trying to warn everyone who the untrue monster heart is. Missed opportunity 😕
I miss the sassy, confident and cool Clawdeen, and her sharp original look, but I’m happy to have more Monster High

As a black girl, I'm definitely not a fan of the black erasure thats going on with Clawdeen Wolf. She was black during there earlier incarnations, and now Nickelodeon cast a light skinned girl because of obvious colorism, made her character afro-latina, and gave her a mulatto sob story to cover it up.

She’s still black. You can definitely criticize the colourism but being Afro-Latina is still black and it kind of gate keeps and denounces the actress’s own identity by rejecting that fact.

I liked it as a new member to this universe of characters, I did not like how the villain was taken down so easy. But I still enjoyed the movie for being in the Halloween mood
I think they had to do that so it wouldn't be so long. This tv movies have to be 1 and a half hour, and with all the songs, they didn't have that much time for the conflict.

as someone who has been a fan of the shows/movies/dolls since all the way back in 2010, i think we need to realize that we dont have to love the new reboot, but its not FOR us, its for a younger generation to hopefully bring in new fans, which is good! But a lot of people also seem to think that mattel and monster high are ghosting old fans (haha puns) which simply isnt true since we're getting a netflix animated show that will follow the story of the original generation where frankie is the main character (with presumably the same VA's) that is supposed to be geared at an older audience. So yes, is the new monster high movie cheesy yes absolutely, but i guarantee everybody would have DEVOURED it if it came out when we were kids because it has the exact same feel as a disney channel/nick movie

Hi! I feel that Lagoona, Ghoulia, Abbey, Heath barely did anything in the movie, it felt to me they were cameos/random background instead of actual side characters. at least we got some background interactions between Abbey and Heath.
I did like the Ghoulia in the graveyard scene.
A lot of the scenes with Clawdeen made me emotional, because its complicated being a mixed kid and not feeling enough for both sides of you. I related to Drac because the pressure made her closed off from everyone, and I have those moments too. Frankie stole the show, and I loved them throughout. The actors made the movie and I honestly really enjoyed watching with friends. It has that campy nature that I love about disney channel movies.
GOD I love Frankie’s character. Whenever they were in the scene I would just smile because they’re so pure!!! Glad to see it carry over in the animated series too.

Yeah, the movie is actually way better than what we expected. It even looks better. (Like we were all expecting the costuming to be awful but it turned out surprisingly really good even for Nickelodeon standards)
It's not a good one, but that doesn't make it a bad one. It's really just an ok movie in terms of Monster High, and actually a good one in terms of just a movie.
Though there are some lore bits that really ick me
My main problem is how they got rid of Clawdeen's character in favor of making her a "protagonist character". A lot of people say that she's another "sassy black woman" trope, frankly I don't think that they actually know what Clawdeen's characterization was before. Because Clawdeen was just a confident and down to earth girl who was also very soft, loyal and creative. She was probably the character that had the most personality out of the main girls. They took that away and now Clawdeen is just... What? The awkward new girl who skates?? She has no personality because they wanted a nice girl and refused to work more into that.
Tbh since the designs were revealed I've been a G3Clawdeen hater because I really hate what they did to her even though I am aware that it isn't that bad and her design (in the series) is probably the best one and does some things better than the previous generations, and her doll is actually adorable. But I will shit on her until I die.
Also the conflict with humans and monsters is really off. In the last generations it made sense because it was driven by fear and so they had to live in the shadows and refused to do any contact and instead of kicking half-human people they also let them live with them because it's believed that otherwise they'd die at the hands of the humans, but now that they just think that they're better than humans kind of shows a double standard with monsters who HAD to be humans before (like mummies, zombies, werewolves, and Draculaura according to her original story) and it makes no sense for them to hide anymore like if you think you're all that then why not come here and prove it? HUH?
While we're in the topic of humans, unpopular opinion but half-human Clawdeen is a thing that should've been since the start because werewolves are half-monsters half-humans already. It's not good in the movie because the exclusion of half-human monsters doesn't make sense because of what I said above and how most monsters have to be half-humans in some way.
I do dig that witchcraft is a human practice though. But it could've been handled better. Like it could be a way where humans could come closer and connect with monsters, celebrating them and kind of doing some cultural exchanges. I mean it makes sense that its banned in context of the movie because, but that context of monsters thinking they're better than humans doesn't make sense like I said before so..
Also the breaking up of Cleo and Deuce and the Clawdeen x Deuce ship. Wtf is that?
And I'm also sad that apparently we're not having Jackson Jekyll/Holt Hyde anymore 😭
The Good According to Me: Frankie, just Frankie. Heath apparently being the spawn of the Devil?! Draculaura's conflict with order and chaos as a child of a PFFT that also wants to be a witchy rebel. Everyone does a good job with playing their roles, even when the writing is a little funky. The designs work for the most part, and pop out much better in the doll and animation.
The Bad: The weird handling of diversity. Enby Frankie is good, but this is a new generation, and a new chance to really amend where the OG series fell through. But for some reason, that means axing the possibility of a truly lesbian Clawdeen, changing Lagoona's ethnicity rather than just reintroducing one of your several fun and unique Latin American/Mexican ghouls, removing Ghoulia's nuance as a nonverbal genius zombie, and doing the MLP Gen 5 thing where we randomly focus on a race war rather than just exploring culture shock for characters like Jackson/Holt. Also the oddity of axing notable mansters like Jackson/Holt even when they were pretty common focal characters in the previous generations, not to mention mansters like Finnegan and Kieran being in a similar position to Clawdeen as some variation of Q.
Things just started, and I have high hopes based on how not terrible things are so far, but those are just some worries I have going forward.

Question: werewolves are by definition half monster, so why is everyone suprised that Clawdein is half human? Was her mom a full wolf and werewolves are halfbreeds?
I was also confused at first! But when you think about it it ends up making sense:
It's pretty common to see "human turns into wolf" werewolves in general, but we have to keep in mind that MH werewolves aren't like that.
In this universe (even all the way back to G1), werewolves and werecats are their own race and about level one/two on the furry scale (werecats are often furrier than werewolves), they never turn fully human, so they are as much monster as any other.
Say, vampires look pretty much human but they clearly are considered full monsters, same for monsters who were once human (like Cleo). The gag with Clawdeen is that she isn't a "pureblood" werewolf, as her father is human, so she's half-human, half-werewolf; the only practical difference with a full werewolf is that she turns full human when she's nervous or scared, but otherwise you couldn't tell.
And the first werewolves were most likely the result of some curse or spell, rather than someone literally having a child with an actual wolf

Finally, mixed to positive reaction to Monster High (2022)!! As long as its continuity stays separate from the G3 animated series, I'm fine w/ this flick having the potential to be better and DO better if given more sequels. I do hope that the film series' Draculaura will lean closer to that of her G3 animated counterpart or that from G1. I want Abbey, Heath, Ghoulia, Cleo and Lagoona to do more when faced against an enemy than watch in the future. I wish that the film series can retcon the whole issue with Clawdeen having problems w/ her human side since, being a werewolf, the writers can play w/ the old school origin of her being a werewolf at night & a human during the day. She could seek out a mcguffin that will keep her in full werewolf form all day & night while learning more about her family. I don't want the Dead Mom Syndrome to rot her core like what happened to Sunny from G5 My Little Pony. Those are just a few of my ideas for the future.

I LOVED Abbey. I know she had one line, but I couldn't take my eyes off the actress. The costuming and her attitude was just so good!

Clawdeen's wolf ears are adorable. 😊 I'm not the biggest fan of musicals now as an adult, but if this airs on TV, I'd give it a watch. And I really like the wardrobe that they had Frankie wear. It makes my punky heart happy. 🙂

From the perspective of an older fan. One thing I took into account is that this movie is made for a new generation of monsters and fans alike, so call it what you want; I'm pretending this new generation is from a different universe of the monster world versus the previous generations. With that said, here are my thoughts on the movie:
1) Overall for a Nickelodeon live-action movie, the plot is good (not great but good). The writers took some time to flesh out the characters according to their new personalities and give most of them a chance to shine. I say 'most' because some characters like Ghoulia, Lagoona, Heath, and Abby didn't say much or anything at all. And I do like Clawdeen being half-wolf, half-human and I hope the new animated series will show us how her parents met, and what lengths her father had to do to protect his daughter prior to Monster High. Just an idea but moving on.
2) Frankie being Non-Binary goes perfectly with their character, especially in the movie they are made up of several human limbs/organs from both male and female historical figures. Draculaura, however, I wasn't to sure about the business of witchcraft being a bad thing considering it's Monster High - Where My Witches At?!!! Also, Vampires and Witches are enemies?!! O-kay... Deuce and Cleo broken up: I didn't care much about their relationship back in G1 - I was a DraculauraxClawd Stan - but now that Deuce and Clawdeen are attracted to each other I will give it a shot. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND!!! I do support G1 Clawdeen being lesbian, I really do. BUT this is a new generation we're working with and love is a very complex subject I am not about to give a lecture on. So to everyone who dunks on the thoughts of Deuce and Clawdeen being a thing, ZIP IT! 🤐 Let's just see how it's played out in the animated series. NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!!! 😮💨
3) And finally, I hope this new generation of Monster High does well. I have grown to like the dolls more on Instagram and will say they are not only cute but have stuck to the OG theme back in 2010, while keeping them fresh in today's world. Since I am currently pregnant/due next March 2023, I do hope I get to share with them my experiences with both the G1 and G3 MH dolls and series when my child is old enough to play with dolls, regardless of their gender.

I loved this movie so much, it became a quick comfort watch for me ! But also I agree with the Clawdeen thing haha because I was immediately like 'oh my god, she's a furry' LOL. It for sure had it flaws and it watches very much like a disney channel movie but I enjoyed it, and also the songs were pretty catchy. Also Frankie having all this knowledge, while also not knowing other things made sense to me bc of course all these brain parts from famous scientists wouldn't yet know what a cellphone was, or even a movie ! The little things like that were pretty cool to me.
In all honesty i might watch the movie but now i miss Jackson/Holt even more they both were always my favourite 😍 and tbh i like the designs they went for in this-
Honestly I'm mostly upset they discarded Clawdeen's siblings Howleen and Clawd. If they couldn't show them in the movie for whatever reason I wish they at least mentioned them. Maybe I'm just picky
I can't help myself from comparing the new monster high to the old, I some respects I enjoy their changes and others I really miss the original. Frankie is the one I'm the least negative about, I love them being non binary and their clothing has good energy, and I love them not quite understanding social interaction yet and info-dumping stuff they find interesting. They have the vibe of liking two different pairs of boots and instead of picking one they just wear one of each together or liking two skirts and stitching parts from each together and making it unique to them. I don't care for all their outfits especially in the cartoon and toys but I appreciate the energy they have going on. I like the prosthetic they have too but I don't know if that was a part of the movie or not, that might just be a toy and cartoon thing
I just finished watching it - It was very mediocre, but definitely better than I think a lot of us were expecting. I think my personal highlight was Frankie? I didnt think I would like their character at all but it was very endearing ❤
I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this movie. Yeah, it’s a little cringe, but so was G1, and that’s what I loved about it. Also, unpopular opinion, but I think G3 Frankie is better than G1 Frankie in terms of personality and depth. I will always love G1 Frankie, but I love how G3 Frankie’s character isn’t boiled down to “the nice one”. Also, in the cartoon series, it’s revealed that they can recall memories from the people that they made out of, do you how much potential that has to open up interesting plot points?
I pretty much agree with everything you say in this video, but I like to list down a few criticisms I had with this movie however. Even though, I liked this film, there were a few things that nearly killed my enjoyment of it.
1#; Clawdeen’s personality feels like a massive downgrade. I get it, the ‘sassy black girl’ stereotype is overused. But G1 Clawdeen was more than just sassy, she was a loyal friend, a fashionista, and the voice of reason for her friends. I never met a MH fan, who didn’t have Clawdeen as one of their favourites. Stripping those qualities away from her, in favour of making her a “not like other girls” archetype is just disappointing. Does the new Clawdeen even have any personality traits or interests besides from ‘nice’ and ‘wants to fit in’?
2#; The Clawdeen x Deuce romance never should’ve existed, and I will take that to my grave. It feels less like a genuine romance, but more like a checkbox to fill when making a teen sitcom movie. Like how Clawdeen NEEDS to have a love interest, because she’s the protagonist. But why did it specifically have to be Deuce? Why not create a new character to fill that box. And just spitballing here, why does it have to be a boy? This is a nickpick, but I am so disappointed that they didn’t make Clawdeen a lesbian. Even the creator said that they liked the idea of her being a lesbian, and many fans headcannoned her as such, so why not elaborate it in the film? If Frankie can be nonbinery, what’s stopping Clawdeen from liking girls? Just saying, Clawdeen had more chemistry with Dracula than with Deuce.
3#; The witchcraft ban in the monster universe doesn’t make sense. That is all.
4#; Finally, the ending was anticlimactic, and really illuminated how morally corrupt Monster High really is. In G1, monsters hated humans, but they were mostly driven by fear. They genuinely believed that the humans would hurt them, but even then, they never went to extreme lengths by banishing someone like Jackson from school, and inevitably sending him to his own death. In G3, the monsters are just a bunch of assholes with a superiority complex, that just hate humans because they think they’re lesser than monsters. They had no legitimate reason to kick Hyde out, and they pretty much feel no remorse for causing the death of an innocent man. I don’t blame Komos for being angry, heck, I would be angry too.
I think it would have been better, if there was no plot twist villain, and the movie went into the Encanto route. Where the school is falling apart, and everyone thinks it has something to do with a human, and blame Clawdeen. But really, it was the school’s decriminalisation and backwards rules that was tearing it apart, and through Clawdeen, they learn to be more accepting. A movie doesn’t always need a villain to be engaging.
I do think Ghouls Rules, did the “monsters vs humans” message better, but otherwise, the movie was okay. I still have to wait for more episodes of the cartoon series, to properly judge it’s quality. But, in the end of the day, I have to tell myself that this is a reboot, and it existing doesn’t erase my memories of G1. And if I don’t like it, then I can always ignore it’s existence, and watch the original series and movies.

At least with G1 Clawdeen, she had her passion for fashion designing paired up with her confident personality, that was consistent throughout the movies, which made her three-dimensional. But G3 Clawdeen has no passions or interesting quirks to fall onto, when her nice tomboy personality eventually grows stale.
There might be some hope for the cartoon series to give Clawdeen more layers, but they seemed to abandon her skateboarding skills altogether, in favour of giving it to Ghoulia, as seen in the promo pictures.
Okay, now that I've seen the whole video (because I had to comment on the Mattel Creations thing when you said it). I went into this movie expecting it to be fun, campy, and cute. It met my expectations. I really like the new characterizations for Draculaura and Clawdeen. Draculaura could sometimes be very childish and child-like in G1, and kind of a ditz, so seeing her here with something to focus on other than BOYS and CLAWD and hooking up her friends was nice. Also loved the father-daughter interactions for both Draculaura and Clawdeen, since you can see both dads want their daughters to succeed, and both ultimately support their daughters' endeavors. Pretty sure every fan of the series over 20 clocked that Komos was the villain just from the promotional material, and if they didn't, they caught it by the fact that he had the second song, and the villain in a musical structured like this always has the second song (Maleficent, Uma, Audrey from Descendants), and I'm okay with that. Kids won't have necessarily caught that, and since the movie is on Nickelodeon and made for kids (the dolls are ages 3+ or 5+, I can't remember which), it's cool. I liked the humor on multiple levels. Sad that Lagoona had essentially nothing to do or contribute aside from being Cleo's 'yes' girl, and that Heath's only job was to show that Deuce had been more of a bad boy troublemaker the year before and was meant to contrast his current attempts to be better.
Song wise, I actually really like the film. The songs are fun, and honestly, I need fun poppy things with positive messages. I'm a high school teacher in a place where teachers are being attacked from all sides for wanting to do what's best for the students (like actually respect people's names and pronouns), so this film and its messaging, with a school that's welcoming unless you're evil and actively harmful, is a breath of fresh air. It gives me Descendants vibes, but Descendants on a budget. The full soundtrack is 11 songs, and there's a difference in quality in the ones that made the movie versus were just background songs, but I like all of them. Deuce's falsetto took a bit to get used to, but my wife, who grew up in and around Broadway theaters, said it sounded like he'd had vocal training through puberty so he could use it effectively. Do I wish he'd been able to sing in his normal register more? Yes. But every repetition of the song makes me like the falsetto more.
Sets and costumes were amazing. Special effects were better than I'd expected for Nickelodeon. Would definitely watch again, and am planning to watch again. It makes a good comfort movie. Still think Ghouls Rule is the best of any of the films made for the franchise, but I liked this a lot.
I’ve been avoiding videos about this movie but decided to finally give it a chance and here’s my take:
This feels a LOT like Descendants. The set design, campy tone and overall ascetic along with the music and dance numbers all feels so much like Descendants.
And I have a love/hate reaction to it, because Monster High IS NOT DESCENDANTS!! I liked Descendants, but I LOVED Monster High. Because Monster High knew what their message was and they STUCK TO IT! It was always about self love and self acceptance, something myself and many other kids needed.
Monster high was literally the only thing that made me feel safe in the darkest parts of my childhood. When I felt so miserable because I had no friends and no one was there to stick up for me when I was being bullied, I could turn to this and at least pretend that there was a place where everyone was accepted, freaky flaws and all. This monster high doesn’t feel like that and I don’t think kids will feel the same sense of love and acceptance from this G3 that we all did from G1.
Maybes that’s just me not being able to see through my nostalgia glasses but this new MH feels so bland compared to what we all got in the mid 2000’s.
It breaks my heart to know that children today can’t have something of their own and that even when they’re given our leftovers from our childhood, it’s watered down or completely wiped of the meaning that made it special in the first place.
Am I the only one who didn't see the teacher plot twist at the end. Like once it happened I felt stupid for not putting it together earlier. Also I LOVED the songs. Ok maybe not Duces song and the ending song but the other ones were bops.
Something I do to help the transition from an old version to a new version is think of every hard reboot as a separate universe with the same characters in the same multiverse.
I'm an older fan, having watched the Monster High webseries since it started, but I absolutely loved this movie after a couple watches. I think, for me, it helped to separate this movie from the original. I didn't compare the characters to the old ones.
I ended up loving Lagoona's design, Frankie is my absolute favorite (new comfort character alert and best representation I've ever gotten in media), I didn't mind Clawdeen X Deuce in the movie (I found it actually kinda cute), and I did really enjoy the new school's design.
Now, I don't think Mr. Komos was the best character for a villain. He felt very much like Hans from Frozen. He interacted with the students in a way that was very caring, even later using Frankie's version of a high five after they walked by to leave the class. His motivation made sense, but he felt like a red herring the whole time.
I also didn't like Heath or Abbey's design, but at least there was a little hint to them being together in the movie, so I'll take it.
The music was also really good in my opinion. You can expect me to be listening to Coming Out of the Dark and Trust until I'm sick of them in a couple months.
I went in to this movie with negative expectations and came out beyond relieved and more than excited for the next movie. Overall, I give the movie 8/10 (might've been a 10/10, but I'm still holding out hope on Jackson/Holt since Komos isn't a confirmation that they're gone).

If you're going to change everything except names and location just tell a story with different characters and different names?! The main thing about G3 is that what it does or doesn't call back to G1 ultimately doesn't matter because it is indeed a hard reset and under no obligation to truly resemble prior continuities. On its own merits I definitely agree that it was perfectly fine and cute, though I did like the song a lot more than you did lol. The clothes were all also SO good, especially on Draculaura and I like that they made little touches like Lagoona being sportier styled and having Abbey lean more into a Y2K aesthetic. Also - Ghoulia always talked/was never non verbal, it's just that we didn't understand zombie/the zombie language.
For its own entity it's a nice enough movie, no worse or better than Descendants or Zombies and I think for those reasons it will be just fine once older people stop throwing review bomb temper tantrums and let the kids it was meant for have it.

My issue with a franchise like monster high (I wanna express I understand them doing this especially for the dolls) but everyone is bipedal, the monster factor is very mild.
What I mean is most of the characters could easily pass as human as two arms, two legs etc etc. You obviously can’t do that if they make them…more monster like.

Ngl I feel like they originally planned out a longer confrontation with Komos/Hyde at the end (seeing how every named student we'd seen up to that point decided to show up), they just had to pull it way back because of budget or something. Could be wrong about that but that's just how it feels with the way it was set up
I actually liked the movie it's just the last 20mins felt rushed
I had mixed feelings at first since I grew up with Monster High, but I gotta say, it's actually pretty well done. Better than my expectations for sure.
I propose the neighboring alternate realities theory to explain the differences between the live action movie, animated show & dolls.
I'm saddened that Mr. Komos will probably never get a doll unless it's a collector edition, I like him.
So fun fact, in the original Monster High books for YA, Ghoulia did speak, but she just spoke very slowly
It pisses me off that they have a movie costume / makeup budget and everyone looks so f awful non the the outfits match or look good the makeup sucks the fact that cosplayers in there bedroom with no movie budget backing them up look 1000x times better is sad

Yes, thank you! Some people really need to chill out, stop taking everything so seriously and just have fun. This not being a good movie doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed! It's your typical mediocre but comforting movie, and I think that's okay. I wanted to re-watch it as soon as I finished it, so I think this will be a movie I'll come back to every october, like Coraline and Tim Burton's work. Except worse. But equally fun nonetheless 😊
I agree with you it's not that deep but I will say this. they did do a very extremely reimagining with it. Like they really erased Claudeens whole family and Gillien. I do not believe this is a minor change. this is a huge change. And indeed it will open possibilities for another movie. but there was a lot that was available from previous animated movies in my belief for a story that they could have used.
God watching older then newer videos is such a trip and i love how much change and growth you’ve gone through and just becoming super comfortable with being you, absolutely love it!❤
It’s a little movie but I think the ending was a little rushed. Definitely could’ve benefited from 10-20 more minutes.
I agree with you. The final battle between the teacher and the students and the ending was so anti-climatic. I was so confused and underwhelmed.
As soon as Negative mentioned Clawdeen being discriminated against because she is mudblood I realized this basically *is* the chamber of secrets. There's the three characters who in some way don't fit in, and were brought together by another force (sorting hat/monster high building) who are friends. There's the secret place created by some powerful and misunderstood guy, that they have to find (chamber of secrets/jekyll's hideout). One of the main three characters is implied to be in trouble because of their identity by something written in blood on a wall (Hermione/Clawdeen). One of the other characters can do something that is unusual for their situation and therefore not good (Harry being a parsel tongue in Gryffindor/Dracula being a witch and a vampire). There's a face off with a modified version of a villain (Tom Riddle/Jekyll & Hyde's son). And of course the mudblood character uses a mirror to stop the villain's side kick... Or the villain himself (The basilisk/Jekyll & Hyde's son). Then onto the next adventure!
Two notes:
- I used to be a Harry Potter megafan when I was younger, but I don't support the author or even really interact with anything related to it now.
- Yes, I know there are only so many stories and plotlines in the world, but I thought the parallels were interesting.
I thought the movie was pretty mediocre but it had a lot of potential. I was still a little disappointed probably because I thought this movie was going to be more similar to zombies with it's overall goofiness tho I still have some hope for the animated series

As B as this whole thing looks, and as little as I care as a whole, I _do_ love the fact that full-monster teacher dude brought back some of those 80s/90s vampire prosthetics habits we used to have. I guess it could be CGI, but I'm still into it.

I don't think I'll ever watch this movie because I don't have Paramount+ and don't intend to get it just for Monster High, but I'm at least happy with knowing that the next generation of fans isn't stuck with complete garbage. I'll never forgive them for massacring my girl Draculaura though

Frankie is the same, but clawdeen and Draculaura are not. Cleo the same, totally the same ghoul. Lagoona not the same. Ghoulia not the same. Deuce is the same kind ghoul, I think the style change is due to the story line.
The name thing seriously, there are tons of names that aren't inherently monstrous.

Class scene 1: would have been a good time to point out that the monsters were wrong for not standing up for jekyll and hyde like the reason the school was made. That just makes monsters as bad as humans for running him out and leaving him for dead.

Yeah, it wasn't bad. It was an okay movie to pass the time. I definitely miss the old one, and probably won't rewatch this movie. I'd be more likely to rewatch Scary Godmother as I always have. And did they just erase Holt, Howleen, Clawd, and Clawdia? And are Cleo and Ghoulia no longer besties? Their relationship reminded me of Chloe and Sabrina from Miraculous but better, and the sister and her friend from Grojband. When they were hating on humans, I kinda got it because some of the students were like that in the original Halloween animated movie but I kept thinking where is Kate Higgins as Frankie, giving her kind speeches. The new accents or lack thereof will take some getting used to but it was okay. I just miss Laura Bailey, as Aussie Lagoona. Lastly, one of my favorite characters was Rochelle, so I hope they don't get rid of her or mess up the character.
