Just a note: If you ever do see a DX cab in North America or Europe, do not photograph it, and do not talk about it publicly online. It's likely an unofficial import, and Sega has been known to C&D arcades running those cabs in unauthorized regions if they ever find out about them. The arcades themselves will usually have signage saying not to photograph them, but... You know, people don't read signs.

Hi, maimai player with over 3 years of experience and a current top 100 max rating player in International version here
It is very refreshing to see a full introduction video of maimai in all English, so kudos to you, this is very helpful for any new comers who want to try out this game
This is gonna be long… So be ready it’s about to get geeky. Some more info that I think would be helpful:
    1) The holds DO have a release timing in this game, buuuuut thankfully was removed since DX version. So if you are playing on a FiNALE cabinet, be aware that holds do make you release it at the same time of its end. It kinda sucks but at least we have moved on from that
    2) Different kinds of notes have different scores. A normal tap note is just a normal tap note. Holds score 2x as much as a normal tap note. Slide is 3x the score, and break is a whopping 5 times more. This is why sometimes 1 miss can lead to different score loss, so uh you definitely don’t want to miss those slides or breaks. It really hurts
    3) Speaking of scoring, break notes operate in a completely different way than all the other notes. 100.5% is the least possible score for any AP in a chart. So where does the extra .5% come from? The breaks. Breaks actually have 3 tiers of scores instead of two. This is normally invisible in DX version onwards, but is visible with some settings before FiNALE. The scores are as follows: 2600, 2550 and 2500. 2600 (which is basically a critical perfect since DX version) rewards the most extra score, 2550 rewards half, and 2500 rewards none.
A simple example is Axeria (Master 14) which only has 2 break notes. If you get AP with both breaks at 2600, your score is 101%. Get AP with both breaks at 2550 and your score is 100.75%, 100.5% for AP with both breaks at 2500. It is simple division but it’s strange that only breaks are like this.
Naturally EX breaks will always be critical perfect, and break slides… They follow the rules of normal slide notes so make sure to get perfects for those so you don’t lose a ton of points
    4) Here are the kinds of achievements for individual charts other than the score grades:
Full Combo (FC): this is self explanatory
Full Combo+ (FC+): Get a full combo with no “good”s
All Perfect (AP): self explanatory again
    All Perfect+ (AP+): Get 101%
Full sync (FS): Both players get Full Combo (There’s also FS+ and I think only the person with FC+ or above would get it)
Full sync DX (FDX): Both players get Full Combo+ (AP or AP+ also counts as long as the other gets FC+)
Full sync DX+ (FDX+): Both players get All Perfect or above
There are no achievements for both players getting All Perfect+, FDX+ is the highest
    5) The songs can be sorted by versions. Completing a version with certain achievements rewards the player with a name plate of that version. This is where those individual chart achievements come in handy. Each version has 4 different name plates of that version name and you do not need to play any Re:Master charts to get them… with 5 exceptions. They are as follows:
    極: all charts FC
    將: all charts rank SSS
    神: all charts AP
    舞舞: all charts FDX
These name plates really are just for showing off, but for those who want to challenge/prove themselves, here you go. I myself have got a few and it’s certainly not easy… You will definitely see people with them on their top of the screen
    6) On etiquettes, just please, don’t hit the buttons or the screen too hard… like I understand if you’re playing ultra hard songs and you’re nervous (Believe me, I know that feeling too and I sometimes hit it harder than usual), but if you’re doing that all the time, it’s gonna break. I’ve seen people hit the buttons (not even the screen) so hard that the whole screen turns white for a split second. People will definitely call you out if you do that
That’s about all I want to say. Improving in this game definitely takes a lot more effort than the average rhythm games. I’ve known people who struggle with slides for months. Please do enjoy the game in any way you want though, whether you just want to try something new or be a hardcore fan like I am.

For fs+ its basically if the players both fc on the same difficulty but for full sync (fs) its if both players full combo a song but they are playing on a different difficulty. One player playing basic who fc and the other playing advanced fc will get you a full sync
But both players playing on the same dif will get full sync plus if both full combo. E.g. basic and basic

One thing I love about maimai is being able to socialise with other rhythm gamers. I’ve played the international version for a year before I moved to Japan, and although I can experience all the new stuff earlier, most people in Japan just play alone, which means I also end up playing alone too (and also that I usually cannot play 4 songs per credit so I’m spending more money than I would’ve) And with the return of utage charts in maimai buddies, which some of them require multiple people to play, I really do miss playing the international version. I guess it’s just a difference in culture

If you played in Japan during the last 3 or so years, it's most likely because of covid. Most arcades I frequent even went as far as to only allow single players for maimai at that time.
If you're playing maimai seriously, you could try finding local matches (though there have been less of these over the years, due to KOP I think). Also Japanese people are quite reserved in general so if it's crowded and you're playing alone, try asking the people behind you to play together. They'll most likely accept. You could also try asking for their twitter account if both of you frequent the arcade. (PS. Don't give too much personal info as they might get overwhelmed)
      Good luck!

Tips for beginners who are starting maimai:
Don't be scared against a higher rating players, everyone started somewhere
Purchase an aime card, that card will allow you to save your game, just ask the staff
Glove is your best friends, one time i played maimai at the arcade and somehow i had gotten a blis
Wearing gloves will not only have smoother slides, but also protect your hands
    Etiquette
Please do not smack the buttons, tapping the buttons is fine, but smacking it is a big no no
Please do not insert your token while the other player is playing,it will come out as rude and the player that plays it may not like it
    Last but not least
After every game, please look behind to make sure there is no one waiting before playing the next round. If there is someone waiting, after your last track, please end the game and let the player have a turn.if the next player requested for a two player match ,then by all means just play it

Oddly enough, especially if a group has been established in a particular arcade, inserting tokens during song selection is permissible akin to placing a quarter to an arcade cab to say "oh, I'll play next". Again, the rule in OPs post is better to follow, but it is also interesting that some rules are modified in different places and cultures.

    fun fact for 1:41
prior to the DX version, hold notes worked a little differently. unlike today's hold note, it actually worked based off hold release timings. so the moment you ever let go of a hold note before it finishes, it will ruin the perfect. as such, some pre-DX maps that contained those short hold notes were one of the hardest maps in it's time
great video by the way, i'm about to share this to more friends to entice them to play with me

I love the social aspect of arcade games. I play a ton of Pump it Up and it's always fun when we can find people to play 3x-5x player co op with. My favorite arcade memory is playing maimai finale and getting pizza afterwards. And finding a third and fourth person to try attacking difficult co op songs like Tribe Attacker x4, Take Out x3, Yeo Rae A x5, and a few others on Pump it Up. There's a few co-op charts in maimai but it's not crazy like Pump gets. I almost always go with a friend though so the extra social interactions along the way is pretty nice. I'm saving up for a flight to Japan so I can go try maimai dx... And the other Japanese exclusive rhythm games.

Although I can't speak for the majority of 15k players, but I feel like not every 15k hates 14< charts, but as an almost 15k player (currently at 14921 D:) I generally wouldn't mind lower rating/beginners to choose song that they like or wanted to try since believe me 15k players were once like you too (wanted to get better or getting higher score). So yeah if anyone is new to this game, don't get discouraged by that, just be you and play or try whatever you like!

Here are some things I want to point out that I didn't see anyone comment here:
7:01 - This is not impossible with touchscreen, this is skill issue. The 7-5 slide actually requires you to touch sensor A6 or B6, and you most likely touched B6 here. This kind of slide is infamous for accidentally splashing even for button players but can be avoided if you pay attention to your tracing.
10:19 - Description on the bottom right is incorrect. It should be "BASIC - lvl5" instead of "UTAGE". Charts where you can actually dance to them were a thing back in the days.

speaking of burning money, it's probably among the most time efficient arcade games for your money. 8 mins of gameplay for 3.50 aud is pretty good, and 12 if you include menu time. add the fact that you'll be in turns all the time (which you can learn from) and that's even more cheaper. only like pinball can even compete, and perhaps if you are very good at rail shooters or are massacreing people at wangan multis, other rhythm games are close but not quite as time efficient.
only reason i legit invested into maimai was because i wanted to invest my time and money into an arcade game which'll be most cost effective for time.

    • @peachymango_
      @peachymango_ 9 месяцев назад

3.5 aud per game? Woah thats pretty steep compared to sg. Most arcades here are about 1-1.5 sgd and there are some that are even slightly less than 0.4 sgd.

I simply love how thorough with all the fundamental information you've covered for this game and I can wholeheartedly agree with 100% of the things said in this video. Insta subscribe.
Actually hell, I'm 16k rated myself and didn't even know misfired slides is called "splashing", and tbh while it can be a skill issue thing, there are times where it's the sensor itself is to blame and the player simply don't have the means to play on a different cab (due to either travel times, or there exists no better cabs).
Some personal examples of mine with splashing is Raven Emperor's ending where the last 3 slides at the very final parts, where the cab I play on would splash the top slider even though I'm just hitting the center slide. Another one is being Grievous Lady during the spin at Tairitsu's laugh and "Re-resonate" parts where I would try to hit the spin pattern with the touchscreen, but it always end up with either 1 or even both of the slides "splashed". Last example I have is Break^3, where every spin pattern at the chorus would almost always end up splashing a slide if you tried to touchscreen it.

This was a mechanic that was introduced in the Murasaki version of the game IIRC back in 2017. Several arcades in Europe has maimai, and as you said, it's Finale.
I frequently go to one that has maimai.
Oh, and the cabs are connected to the internet, meaning I can sign in with my card at any other maimai Finale cab in Europe if I ever go to one of the other arcades that has maimai, or well, should be able to
I don't really need to be worried about a queue to maimai at my local arcade as
    1. It only allows max 100 visitors per shift (it's a freeplay arcade meaning you pay for entry and then you play whatever you want, with more frequent goers having the option of buying a pass which overall reduces the fee per visit), and there's plenty of other games (fighting games, shooting games, various driving/racing ones, a whole slew of pinball games). Also, due to opening times, it's typically only on school holidays (they are open on more days during those) it's fully booked (you can pre-book entry in advance), and there's generally a bit more visitors on the weekend following payday as well. So yeah, not typically so many people you have to wait to play, and there's other games that are available for one to play if the game they want to play is occupied
    2. The rhythm games don't tend to draw in a lot of people here, presumably because of the aesthetics and them being a niche game category. Mostly kids are drawn to it outside of the clique of rhythm gamers. Others might try it, but most don't play it for more than maybe one or two credits
So yeah, I usually don't have to wait to play maimai, or any of my local arcade's rhythm games really, as people either aren't drawn in/interested in those games and most of the time the place isn't fully booked. All the better for me, the one rhythm gamer that plays maimai more than any other of the rhythm gamers at my local arcade (the others are primarily Jubeat, DDR, ITG or DanceRush)
And becoming as into rhythm games as I have after first visiting the arcade and subsequently becoming a regular has allowed me to meet new people to talk about and sometimes play rhythm games with, and being a rhythm gaming regular comes with the perk of sometimes getting to stay past closing as one of the guys working there sometimes stay and play after he's finished with work and let's me and other rhythm gamers to hang around and play more if we want 😄

Well I agree astrodx and the actual cabinet is definitely a different experience, I must say astrodx has absolutely improved my skills for understanding master charts way better! Notes on the maimai FInale cabs, depending on the arcade, some operators will change the language into English and some have connections to unofficial servers.
Now, I'm not going to post details about them online but if you see a green network icon on a Finale cab, ask around to see if anyone knows where it connects to.
Also, the number of songs that can be played per credit is set by the operator and the 3 for solo and 4 for dual is not a hard and fast rule.

Normal perfect breaks also have different scores
    Perfect 2500 (50ms) gives 0.5%/N extra point
    Perfect 2550 (33ms) gives
    0.75%/N extra point
Critical Perfect 2600 (16ms) gives 1%/N extra point
And there are also huge difference in Greats.
    Great 2000 (66ms) gives 80% base score
Great 1500 (83ms) gives 60% base score (which is an extra break loss 😮)
Great 1250 (100ms) gives 50% base score (I will consider I green this one anyway

Normally 40% great and 30% good bonus is neglected compared to the score loss.
If you use the "scoring" to represent the judgement, the "score" for DX varies from different songs. You may see "Critical perfect 4386" on Lia=fail, or also "Critical perfect 2525" on the metronome song. As the scoring 2550/2575/2600 is only for songs that break counts = 1/20 of all weighted notes
      (Including breaks themselves)
The score I wrote is just the corresponding timing precision of FINALE

Break 2000 or 1500 will not be directly shown on DX cabinet both on gameplay and result screen.
The easierway to notice it is to set your center display to "achievement- (1) or (2)". And try to see how much score loss for normal great or miss.
If your score drop way more than 1 normal miss for a break great, then you are highly possible to break a 1500 or 1250 great
