Small little euro hatches like this can be amazingly reliable. A friend of mine had a 2005 Clio which was owned by his older brother then his older sister then him and now his younger sister. The car has only ever had regular working done when needed and never let any of them down. Another pal had a mk2 Punto sporting from new for 17 years until someone crashed into him. It had 307,000 miles on it and got nothing other than regular work too. Small euro cars are king of the road
I had a 2004 mk2 Clio, I owned it 3 1/2 years. It was the 1.5 dci (65 Hp TD). It was £30 a year to tax and consistently gave me 60 mpg urban. Motorways was late high 70’s mpg, it was unbelievable. I wish I’d never got rid of it tbh. The wife named it “Claud”
@@Quattro_Joe I have a car now I’m completely happy with. But I have said to Mrs Wife, if anything happens with this one I’d go straight back to a Mk2 Clio, has to be 3 door like our other though.
I ran a C3 of that generation for a while, it was a good car and maybe the most comfortable small hatchback ever. It’s hard to find a good one, but if you do find a good low mileage car with history that has been cherished then you won’t regret it.
@@Northumbrian-Today, I’m also not a fan. I was referring to what Matt said about them failing to have the C3 look like a 2CV. I think they did get the look right.
I've owned 2. They've provided me with extremely reliable, very economical ( 64.6 to 72 mpg w a 1.4 l hdti) transport. Their rear seats are short only in leg room, but I rarely use the back seats as I can put them down and have a big, easy access opened hatchback to load plenty when necessary. I'm 6'1 and find the driving position and available space very adequate. Both of mine have been quite nippy little cars. Strangely, my present 2006 C3 is only slightly less zippy, but it's a higher spec Desire model. It has great visibility, £30 p/year road tax and very inexpensive to insure. It's very handy in tight space re parking and manouvering. Overall, a very good little car. Obviously, it's important to know who and how previous owners treated them. Both of my C3s were one owner which also suggests reliable service to them as they've looked after them well.
I think the styling is fantastic and they have a soft comfy ride and lots of internal space. . Unfortunately the build quality is not great. The most annoying issue is that if the central locking packs up you can't lock the car... If they spent £500 each more on building them it could have been really good.
I had the c2 1.4 as my first car, was cheaper to insure than the 1.2 surprisingly. It was like a toy car looking back but at the time it felt like an s class to me,it never did lock from the fob or the blade so I'd just leave it unlocked and no one stole it. Those old 8v engines were pretty bulletproof in my experience. I know the later 1.4 16v engines were garbage though. Same ones as the 2nd gen minis etc
Yes the old TU was a strong engine. Its the later BMW derived engines that generally ruined the party. Although its the type of car that often gets run into the ground with no servicing, then the owner blames the car for going wrong.

Some time you get lucky my mate has a fiesta 1.6tdci the dreaded DV6 engine which is fine unless you don't service it they hate not being serviced but 3 years he didn't service that thing we had to force him and surprisingly it's still going years on.
Or Triangle, Fullrun, A-Plus, Tomket, Landsail, Accelera, Lassa…etc, etc. The list of cheap tyres seems endless. Some are fairly reasonable in some areas, but seldom are they any good in all areas. My gfs mom has one of these - 2008, 1.4 petrol, but a higher trim, as it has auto climate, automatic lights and wipers, and rear electric windows. All of the same issues - saggy sun visors, saggy parcel shelf, central locking still doesn't work despite changing the key battery. Never had any major issues though - it's a simple, mostly reliable car!

My wife had a Mk1 C3, I thought the drive was very good tbh and one of my favourite cars she owned. The 1.4 petrol has a seal inside that fails and makes it look like the head gasket. It happened on my wife’s car. Other than that pretty good practical motor. Keep up the good vids. Really enjoy some of the old motors you buy.
Not even one second into this video yet, and i'm guessing that it is a manual C3, and you have also massively overspent on this car 😂I absolutely love watching this cheap series + all of your videos as a whole.
My grandfather had one of these in diesel as his final car, nothing but trouble and a right nail. My aunt and uncle have one though, 20 years on and still going strong. Complete lucky dip with these…
I had a similar vintage C3 for a couple of years. Some previous owner had fitted an after-market stereo which interfered with the central locking - I was unable to lock the passenger front or either rear doors. No one 'broke' in or tried to nick it.
That’s the cleaners car lol! Good buy I had a c4 60,000 one fly wheel no problems and loads of freedom. Ride a Daytona in my life. But you could live in it👍🏴
I had a 2010 diesel C3 that had been looked after. Serviced every 12 months. New drops. Balls. Disks pads. Wishbones. Track rod ends. spotless inside. Original paintwork unmarked. It drove like new when I sold it @85K for £1000. Everything worked. Ice cold AC. No warning lights. If you find one that's had the money spent on it they're great cars. 65mpg average.
Love the channel! We’ve had that model as our second car for 2 years, only done 64,000 miles and very cheap to repair. Helps me get our son to his special school 60 miles every weekday
Well, it's good knowing it'll be fixed up and sold. Likely to someone starting out, and headed to University. Just needing a cheap (mostly) reliable run-about.
My c4 coupe in black 1.6 petrol is still running well..not brand new, but everything works... Paid £1000 4 years ago, and I've put in aprox £1500 on new cambelt starter alternator brakes and shocks...serviced properly... The thing is this car has the most comfortable seats of any comparable car such as golf...I've had 2007 audi a3 and the seats were pretty shit...I can drive 4 hours in my car and feel just fine...lumbar support is great... Yeah, they are not Japanese, but they were built well... Literally, no rust and even inside feels good. Soft touch materials on the dash. Quiet on the motorway. Not bad for £2500 total😢👌🤣
I only ever owned one Citroen an AX and it had a 1.4 engine and no surprise the head gasket blew! It didn't like starting in winter, it went through 3 windscreens due to body flex and it creaked and rattled. I was almost thankfull when one day i was stopped at traffic lights when a vauxhaul only stopped when it rear ended me, wrote the Citroen off and his car was repaired, nuff said about Citroen crash resistance! You made a wise choice by letting this one go to your mechanics.
In my (1st gen) AX I t-boned another car when I was doing 50mph. No airbags. I survived. I thrashed that engine until the valves bounced, every day, and it never blew its gasket. Windscreen was never any trouble either, until I cracked it with my face. Unrefined though.
I should have rejected my AX, but back then the consumer rights were very weak. My local windscreen fitter thought that some of the welds had not been done and the body was flexing causing the windscreens to crack. The head gasket went just out of warranty, the garage that repaired it said that it was a common issue, a few months later it was written off. No way would i buy another Citroen, thin metal and cheap plastics a bit like todays Dacia's.@@hunchanchoc8418
It is a shame this Citroen is not in the best mechanical condition, because despite its distinct appearance, it is quite a cute little car. I do think it would have sold quite quickly, I do quite like it. As always great video Matt, and for once no massive overspending lol 😂.
I bought a 2008 1.4hdi C3 . They drive pretty good for a small car. They are really good on diesel better than some hybrids. They dont look great but if your not vain they are a good little car. Seats are more comfortble than the 307 from the same era.
my friend has a C2 of similar vintage. 177k miles and he doesn't remember having changed the oil. I think he hopes that it will just die so he can move on. But that little thing just won't give up
Sacre blue ! You almost got stuck in le merd with that one. That was a lucky escape and as usual an entertaining video. Bon chance with your next purchase.
The C3 was kinda a good car except for the Pluriel models, they have this sort off roof thing that you have to remove the pillars and store them somewhere because obviously it wouldn't stay in the car. The C3 styling wasn't my cup of tea but it's alright unlike the Pluriel which I don't like.
I'm not at all a petrolhead, but these "I bought a cheap..." videos are incredibly addictive. If I've learnt one thing, it's to look after my 2016 Hyundai i10 well.
I have just sold a 2006 C3 1.6 HDi Exclusive because it failed it's MoT due to the offside outer sill being seriously corroded. It had all the shortcomings described in this video but it was comfortable and I quite liked it and kept it for 10 years.
My mum had a 2002 C3 1.6 16v Exclusive. She loved it to bits. Was an ex BT company car and we ran it from 30-130k miles. I wasn’t a fan as the gears didn’t feel as slick as a Fiesta and disliked the digital speedo. It’s rattled a bit suspension wise on rough roads but nothing was ever seriously worn when inspected. It did have some suspension bits over the years and a new exhaust, a heater resistor from memory. But it was comfy and cheapish motoring with the 1.6 not being the most economical option of engine, it did however never burn oil and never had any mechanical issues engine wise. Changing a headlight bulb with a fuse box behind it needed immense patience tho
Cheers for the video. I have a late 2008 C2. The nicer looking 2 door version of this era C3. I keep it clean and look after it and it has served me well for 3 and a half years now. It will also be making it's 2nd trip to Germany this Christmas. The entire dash can be changed over to KPH easily which is a bonus for that! JayEmm did a review of it a few years ago.
I swear that these were everywhere like 3 years ago, not theyre gone. I mean theyre good as runarounds but yeah its just unprofitable. Great video as always Matt! :D
Great video of a real car, no, you cant say it is ugly, it is a noddy car, meant to be chic/cute/dinky appealing to old people and lady learners. The whole of France seems to drive things like this, and they are meant to be damaged/abused and used as mobile dustbins, never cleaned or loved. In the UK they are just shopping trolleys and taking the dog for a walk. The world needs cars like this for people who have no respect whatsoever for what they drive!
My neighbours are Citroen fans, with a number over the years. They've had a 2008 C3 from new - as a second car, it hasn't passed 50000 miles. It amuses me that you can hear it's ancestry when they go out in it. The gearbox whine of its Peugeot 104 Great Great Grandparents. I thought that cill looked rusty!
I had a saxo westcoast years ago, it had the same engine. I hammered that around for a year (i was 19 at the time lol) it was very reliable and never gave me any problems
Son in law had a 52 plate 1.4 Diesel… round the world on a gallon … so economical, Uber reliable and £30 to tax, had it just over a year and got back the £650 he paid for it…. Wheel bearing for an mot and that’s all 👍
Tyres: I suspect for a few extra dollars and an agreed modest minimum order quantity, you could get manufacturers to supply you with House of Windsor branded tyres, or any other brand of your choosing. (My personal choice for that extra level of trust: Liz Truss Radials: designed to last 49 days once installed 🙂)
My Mum and I bought between us a C3 back in June of this year and it is in much better condition than this. We paid £700 for an 05 plate and we love it so much. The service indicator light was reset at the M.O.T (which it passed) and the service now is due in 1900 miles. We were also fortunate to buy the car from a car mechanic whose family drove it and he subsequently maintained it.
You got to know when to hold em know when to fold em ! 😮 you seem to be learning a little sense although i miss the lve massivly overspent on this one !
I really enjoy watching your videos about buying old cheap cars and I’d be interested in getting a Nissan Almera Tino in for the channel. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it and it is a car that I believe people have forgotten about. 😊
Thanks for the video, as always. Why, oh why don't people wishing to sell / trade in their vehicle spend a couple of bucks and clean it or get it cleaned first? They would "polish value into the vehicle", a phrase I first heard on Wheeler Dealer more years ago than I care to remember. I've done it since and it pays off.
The engine doesn’t have to have a knackered head gasket, to have coolant mix with the oil. Short journeys and condensation will have the same mayo effect.
A friend has a 1.6hdi that looks very similar to this. It’s run on a shoe string budget it cleaned unloved she’s had it 5 years and has been really reliable. If theses are properly maintained they are just as reliable as any other car out there. But I thought perhaps you should put on a T-shirt Well we’re here. My young son was doing some colouring when I was watching the video. He herd your theme tune then just as drove in to your car park he said at the same time as you. Well We’re here
I have particular thoughts about the french, don't ask, but in 1990 I bought an 83 Peugeot 505 turbodiesel. I had it for 11 years. The longest I have ever owned a car. That car was solid as a rock. It gave me very little trouble except of course, like all french cars, it was completely underpowered. I would never, though, ever buy a Citroën. That thing looks cheesy. 😅😂😅 Have a great weekend Matt! 😀
I just bought a 2007 c3 1.6 hdi, it was owned by a 94 year old woman who was grassed up for driving when she wasn’t allowed so she had to sell her car it was £1000 only done 63k miles and only done 5k miles since 2020 it runs like an absolute dream perfect inside and out and I am very happy with the car in the day I have owned it and so much service history for the car too 😁
Huh, I used to think £500 was 'cheap' - until I bought my 2008 C3 1.4hdi two years ago for......£300! Even I had to giggle getting a completely fine little car for that sum! Had long MOT, clean interior good bodywork and apart from a bit of grille and part of Citroen badge missing, it just needed a new battery. I do a lot of mileage and have taken it up close to 200,000 with no problems whatsoever. With incredibly cheap tax......this has 'really' been 'cheap motoring'! The funny thing with my various cheap cars over the years is that people get the idea I have no interest in cars - when actually that couldn't be further from the truth.......just that I love the 'art' of driving, but don't like losing money on 'status' vehicles.
This is the sort of car (in days gone by) a friend of mine would buy to run into the floor. He would buy a car for £50 (about £400 in today's money) with six months tax and six months MOT, run it, scrap it and buy another. Practically zero cost motoring .... he never had to buy new tyres, check the oil or bother with MOT's ... and would get £10 back from the scrapman.
I had a 203 C3 Desire for 7.5 years from new, very reliable car, swapped for a Corsa, got rid 18 months later swapped for a new [2014[ C3 Selection 1.2 vti, I still have that one
It would be a good car with the rust fixed and a basic service. Glad someone seems to be saving it. That cars like this in the UK are so cheap is not really such a bad thing. New car sales may drop soon due to interest rates meaning cars like this may even go up in value. We seem to be sort of car snobs in the UK, taking out loans to buy cars? It means those who can spend some time fixing the cheap cars themselves get proper bargains.

Love the variety & these cheap cars series. Had new cars and loved them but also enjoy a cheap runabout 👍🏻
I only ever owned one Citroen an AX and it had a 1.4 engine and no surprise the head gasket blew!
It didn't like starting in winter, it went through 3 windscreens due to body flex and it creaked and rattled.
I was almost thankfull when one day i was stopped at traffic lights when a vauxhaul only stopped when
it rear ended me, wrote the Citroen off and his car was repaired, nuff said about Citroen crash resistance!
My local windscreen fitter thought that some of the welds had not been done and the body
was flexing causing the windscreens to crack.
The head gasket went just out of warranty, the garage that repaired it said that it was a
common issue, a few months later it was written off.
No way would i buy another Citroen, thin metal and cheap plastics a bit like todays
Dacia's.@@hunchanchoc8418
Only just discovered your videos, Matt. Got to say if I was ever in the market for a used car, I’d choose to buy a car from someone like you.
When you bent down for the keys you went “uhhh” that’s a sign of getting old 😂 I know I do it all the time. Good video.
Replacing a front bottom ball joint is never easy and always painful.
So Mat can speak French and Spanish - no end to this mans talent!
Well he, Matt; doesn’t know the difference between Citroën et citron 😂
@@paulmcgee1867He's closer to the truth with citron.
Hey, I have one of these, albeit a 2004 one. Learning all I can on maintaining it to keep it running for as long as I can.
Lower your expectation, never get disappointed. That is actually good👍
my friend has a C2 of similar vintage.
Gormless, an accurate description.
Love the tyre brand observations.
The Madonna track just increased its value! Great vid as always
Love it when starts to inspect the car and goes to the tyres.....very dry comedy gold! ...and he got a new unknown brand today ...bingo!!
Unbelievable service history and interior condition 😂. Autumn weather and scenery looking good.
I agree. They were weird
Matt, as you said, alls well that ends well….you did the right thing….
Good call. Why not have 2 channels "I've Massively Overspent" and "I've Dodged a Bullet" 😀😀🎯
Hi glad you got your money back, the wee car looks great too, from marty in Belfast northern Ireland God bless
DelMax tyres? A genuine product of Trotters Independent Traders 😂 Good vid as always, keep them coming 👍
Brilliant as always!
Friend of Mine got one of those for His 18th Birthday. He was a Happy Chap, but sad about that Gift LOL
Matt: "Advertise anything for £1995 these days and it sells"
Me: "Wife for sale £1995!"
Only joking, she's a sweetheart really
Thanks for the video, as always. Why, oh why don't people wishing to sell / trade in their vehicle spend a couple of bucks and clean it or get it cleaned first? They would "polish value into the vehicle", a phrase I first heard on Wheeler Dealer more years ago than I care to remember. I've done it since and it pays off.
can't believe this happened, especially after you gave it a service
Even with a clean it looks much better, hopefully whoever has bought it will have a good few years cheap motoring
I do love the Peugeot / Citroen service reset option, used it a few times .. lol
The engine doesn’t have to have a knackered head gasket, to have coolant mix with the oil. Short journeys and condensation will have the same mayo effect.
Hey Matt, I soon as you pulled up and looked at Those Del Boy tyres it was game over! . French cars…….🙈🙉
Well We’re here
I laughed so much about the sun coming first time in three months ... England.. Cheers from Italy (well we had a lot of rain too lately..)
Have a great weekend Matt!
I have a 2008 1.4 diesel. Had it for 11 years. Never had that many issues, apart from electrics.
Always remember my managers face where I used to work when he was given a black C3 as a courtesy car. As a Glaswegian you can imagine what he said😂
We're living in a material world was perhaps not the most appropriate first line to hear on the radio, when you're sat in a £500 c3 😅
Hahaha I thought that
This is the sort of car (in days gone by) a friend of mine would buy to run into the floor.
I did a couple of driving lessons in 1 of these 7 years ago, Was awful to drive 🫣 didn’t stay with that instructor 😂
8v engines are bombproof, think av the same one in the 207 I'm doing up too! Love a frenchie
funnily enough my 207 reg ends in AMU too 😂
Coincidence
It would be a good car with the rust fixed and a basic service. Glad someone seems to be saving it. That cars like this in the UK are so cheap is not really such a bad thing. New car sales may drop soon due to interest rates meaning cars like this may even go up in value. We seem to be sort of car snobs in the UK, taking out loans to buy cars? It means those who can spend some time fixing the cheap cars themselves get proper bargains.
as an american who lives in america, im so sad we do not have Citroen because they seem so wonderful.
Back in the day if Woolworths sold cars this would have been one , and it has the build quality of a TV remote control 😂.
For a car that hadn't been serviced for 9 years, it has done well.
Just because it's not in the book doesn't mean it hasn't been serviced.
Another cracking video matt, love these cheap car videos. Have a great weekend
Thanks 👍 Same to you
I think it looks alright. Now the C4 from this era is lovely though I think, the coupe especially.
Love your video's keep it up matt hope your well and good luck with the rang rover if go ahead on transformation page hope you have a great weekend
Thanks. I hope the lads can get it back on the road 👍
The line "If I can control my spending", hilarious!
I had a silver one up here in Finland, a moose stepped on to the road and I crashed trying to miss it. They are very safe cars that's for sure
Mat did you say...Den exo idea?In Greeķ?Dude you are my favorite youtuber!❤"Δεν έχω ιδέα"🎉
