  • This Yaesu FTDX-400 was purchased brand new in Australia in August of 1970. It's in completely original condition. All capacitors have passed the ESR test and random resistors I tested were all within tolerance. This unit is in immaculate condition for it's age and has quickly become an important part of my collection. It only needed a couple of new tubes in the audio stages, new Toshiba 6KD6 finals, a new ceramic capacitor in the ALC section and a realignment. I Just had a great weekend of local and DX contacts and look forward to many more with this fine peiece of history. 73 from VK2-XXL.

Hello Andrew. Watching the FTdx400 video again and enjoying your capture of the magic of these classic radios. Need to get mine on the air. i need to get up earlier to catch the propagation to Australia ... missing QSO's to VK land. Wishing you all the best for the New Year and beyond. Take care .. Hello Andrew. Always a thrill to make contact with you in Australia. Awesome youtube channel ... excellent job keeping the older rigs running and sharing your experience. Take care and all the best. Mike.

Thanks Mike! To be honest I could put a bit more effort into my videos, but after years of producing broadcast material in commercial radio, most of the time it's easier just to hit record on the phone and upload it raw lol. Maybe one day. Obviously it's all about the equipment and that comes across loud and clear :)

I used one of this in a CQWW back in 1988. Wonderful rig. But I just can´t see that s-meter needle picking in the opposite direction!!! LOL. 73 de LU3HIP

Hard to believe this thing was manufactured to provide over 500 watts !! Wow !

That's the input power to the final section (different measurement in the old days) But that still equals more than 200 watts pep output. But I never run it any harder than 150 max. And even less when I have the FL-2000B amplifier hooked up that I was lucky to get not long after I made this video :)

Fantastic!! Thanks for sharing. It really makes us happy when the old radio is revived.
The humidity in Australia is extremely low compared to Japan, so there seemed to be less deterioration of electronic components, especially carbon resistors.

Happy to share and yes! I was amazed to see how all of the old components held up. I also tested what I think are the screen voltage caps under the rectifier board and perfect as well. It's a solid unit and amazing reports over the air!

Thanks for the reply. That's amazing!! I live near Tokyo and it's 10:30am now, cloudy, 30 degrees but the humidity is 82%! Actually, it's hotter than Bangalore or Singapore during the summer season (^_^)

@@Plato1959 Wow that makes a lot of sense why the radios you have on your page are the way they are. Much drier and less humidity in Australia. Your channel is great inspiration for me :)

Thanks for watching! Sometimes the faults can be as simple as a lose wire or bad contact. Check for VFO output/voltage and the main oscillators. Worth the effort. Good luck!

Hi again mate! Unfortunately all that appears to be available is the user manual containing the limited alignment and diagrams. It appears no service manual was ever available for these early Yaesu's. When you find out what was wrong with yours, please come back to my video and let me know in the comments :)@@manuelangelo52
