Isildur did not face Sauron, except in the movie. In the books Isildur simply approached the body of already dead Sauron and cut off his finger with the ring. In the movie he was portrayed as a hero, in the books he was a little bit better than a mutilator. Sauron died from the charge of hundreds of bravest men and elves, who payed heavy price, including kings of elves and men, Gil-gallad and Elendil who died by Sauron's hands. Note that Isildur was not among those bravest who charged at Sauron.
