- Today I'm making a DIY truck bed liner using rubber horse stall mats. I'll show how to cut them to shape and tie them together with the woodworking technique of using 'bowties'. And at the end I'll show you the real inspiration for this project.... a truck bed camper mixed with a handyman's utility work shell!
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions you might have!

Anything you do to the ol homestead is fun and awsome
Aww thank you! 😊🙏
Your kids are blessed to have you as a dad 🥲😭
In addition to being a good servant of the Lord…. Being a father is priority in my life. 😊🙏
@@homesteadonomics my brother in Christ 🙏 God bless yall!
Looks like the start to a cool truck bed camper/tool shed.
It seems that horse stall mats are universally loved by truck camper folks...
Thank you! And yes, I think merely for the aspect of them kinda being a good stabile and somewhat cushioned footing they are perfect for a camper base.
Smart! Very practical!
Thank you!
Sleeping in your truck with your tools and dog, its every mans dream.
Haha….yes, that’ll probably be the first official trip. My dog Olive LOVES traveling pretty much anywhere with me🤪
Well done, looks good.
Thank you Robert!
Great idea for a bed liner.
Thank you!
Yessssss! Truck bed camper incoming! I have my Forney and my popcorn ready!!!
Glad to hear it! These are my favorite kinds of projects!!!!
Cool...looking forward to the new project! I like the idea of the mat for the bed, too!
You and me both! I needed a good foundation for the camper and it’s nice just to have back there to keep things from sliding on the slick metal.
The Tractor supply in my area has them for $55 each...pretty good deal for a very tough bed liner...I'm going to suggest these to my step-dad as he's been wanting a good liner. Thanks!
Yes, I think they’d make a good liner for him. The toughest part of the process is cutting through the thick rubber. But it’s not too bad…. About 5-7 passes and it’s a pretty clean cut!
I did that! I bought a pallet for my wife and swiped 2 for the truck bed.
Next time I’ll make a paper pattern first and holding tabs for the gooseneck cover.
love the rubber flooring idea!
Thank you! And the truck camper project above it will also be sporting some cool rubber flooring….but it will be rubber ‘diamond plate’ pattern. Stay tuned!😀👍
Great Idea to use horse mat 👍
Thank you CD!
Looks like a fun project!!
Great job!!👍🏻😎
Thank you Randall! I’m certainly looking forward to this camper build😊🙏
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome! And I should have many more coming shortly with this camper project…, as I’ve got a bit of a strict timeline as we’ve got a big road trip coming soon😉
Very nice. Thank you.
Thank you too!
Love your work especially your concepts!
Thank you kindly! 😊🙏
Looking forward to the truck camper, nice frame so far!
Thank you Jason! I’m pretty excited about it….should be quite a few videos of these build. And perhaps even some solar/battery setup😉
@@homesteadonomics that bluetti you got earlier on would work well in there
I'm looking forward to watching the build. Great idea on the truck bed.
You and me both Alan! I’ve had this project in my mind since I was nearing the end of my DIY travel trailer build! Part one should be coming very soon!😉🙏
Joe what a great idea using the stall mats. Looking forward to the solo camper! Go Cats! Bear Down!! A good week for Arizona athletics.
Thank you! I’ve been thinking about this project since I neared the end of the travel trailer project. Stay tuned as it should be coming very soon! Bear Down😊🙏
Haven’t watched your videos in years. I’ve been subscribed for a while , you got me into the idea of living off the grid . Thanks for the inspiration and I’m back.
Tractor Supple aint gonna be able to keep enough of those mats in stock now, good project!! God Bless!!
They are a really good multipurpose surface… I’m already thinking of other uses for the cut off pieces🤪
May God Bless you as well😊🙏
The bowtie joint is a great idea. 👍
Thank you!
The bowties are slick! Can you do a follow up in 6 mo.?
Thanks! I won’t likely do a dedicated follow up….but as this will probably be a longer project then I’ll most likely touch on that in the later parts of the camper build😉
JOE, EVERYTHING YOU DO IS INTERESTING
Awesome stuff Joe! 😃👍🏼👊🏼
Thank you Fred!!!!
My bedliner is sometimes mud, dirt, and rocks, lol
Thanks for sharing, and as always, keep building 👍
Haha….mine too! Well until I started thinking about this camper build that is🤪
Might make a good floor covering for a home gym area.
Yes, I’ve seen them used for that. Very good durable non slip surface
First, I must say, that cinder block toss was just too perfect. Was that your first toss? Also excited for what you're making to go on top of the mat!
Haha…nope, but it was the second toss! I liked how the big block ended up leaning on the half block.
Excellent idea.
Suggestions: put the left over strips at the front, sides and tops of wheel wells; use a cardboard template to make a tighter fit.
Yes, I enjoyed it. First, smart upgrade. Second, quite dapper with the bowties. ;) Third, multi-use is always a plus in my book, AND it can double as a guest suite for camping alongside the travel trailer. Fourth, it reminds me of the channel you introduced me to: SUV RVing. Fifth, that second cinder block- perfect landing!
This'll be a fun project. Looking forward to it.
Glad to hear it!!!! It’s been rattling around in my head since I started my travel trailer project. Should be a fun build!
Awesome Joe!
I was just wondering what possible ways there are to line the bed of my eighties Squarebody truck. We have a half dozen stall mats not being used. Great use of bow ties!
Looking forward to many more videos about this project.
- Nick in Prescott
Thank you Nick! I think they’d do well on your truck too. Stay tuned as this will be quite a few videos of content!
Bowties for the liner - great idea.
Thank you jeff and phoebe!
ya that looks cool!
Thank you!
Another awesome build, thanks Joe. Do you have sufficient leftover mat material to cover tailgate and front wall? Looking forward to seeing your next installment as this insert comes to fruition. Any updates on Marley, her furry kids and competitions.
Wishing you and your family a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings together. Peace brother
Thank you! As for the scraps I do have some I am going to think of some uses for. For the tailgate though it might be too floppy unless I secure it really well. But I definitely do want to do something on there to make a nicer surface once I’ve got the camper product in full swing.
@@homesteadonomics Rather than screws I used silicone as an adhesive when affixing a rubberized material to the tailgate of my Ranger. It survived for decades. The tailgate was probably the only unrusted, pristine metal after 26 years. Peace brother
Great idea using the bowties
That’s a great idea! Very functional. Thanks for producing excellent videos. Always first class!
Thank you Jeff! Stay tuned as this camper project will be coming quick 😊🙏
@@homesteadonomics I’ll be looking forward to it!
Such a great idea and saves cash!!! Thank you for posting! I went and bought two mats today to do the same for a future truck camper!
I used these horse mats to put a floor into my shop. Even my very heavy table saw and bandsaw roll on it no problems. Very durable, and actually quite safe and quiet.
I also think they make a great surface for a shop area!
Camper and Tool Trunk Combo
That’s what I’m going for😊🙏
Nail it, I was thinking DIY topper/camper since that’s popular right now would provide privacy when the whole family goes camping.
Looking forward to your take on this.
I love stall mats.
I have them in my garage shop, my basement gym, and always looking for another use.
I don't actually have a truck currently but this is a great idea
Very cool. Nice touch with the bow ties too. Looking forward to the next build series 👍
Thank you! And I am too….been thinking about this project for a few years now😀🙏
Looking forward to this build.
Mr. Joe haven't seen you in a while. The old homestead must keep you busy. Seen your posts on Instagram. How is your greenhouse doing and all the farm animals? Thank you for sharing and God Bless you and your family. 🙂🌵🐕🐎🐐🐓🐔🌵(🌹🐞🦂🌵)
Oh yes…..I get busy here doing this and that. We are doing well….but just a lot of various things going on taking time….BUT I can say that the camper project is underway and the videos will be coming out very soon.
Oh yes, I will be doing a green house one soon too😉
May God Bless you and your family too
I demo'd a concrete slab at the house years back. I jack hammered the concrete into football sized pieces and loaded them in the truck by hand to haul to the dump. To prevent denting the hell out of the bed, I dropped a 1/2" sheet of plywood in. That was back before lumber prices elevated to stupid high levels.
I like your solution, should last MUCH longer.
I had to do the same thing about 20 years ago….jack hammering a slab up and hauling it away. But I wasn’t smart enough at the time to put anything down…. Just let it bang, ding and slide around🤦♂️🤪😂
They also make a great floor for the Wal tent😁
I imagine they definitely would! And I do love those canvas wall tents!
That is fantastic news! Congratulations!
Thank you Anja 😊🙏
Saber saw and a coarse wood blade cuts this stuff really nice! I put a scrap of 2" foam underneath while cutting. Just make sure your blade doesn't reach THROUGH the foam.
Also, one mat fit my 2015 Tacoma almost perfectly, no bowties necessary. Just needed 3" deep cutouts for the wheel wells, which I scribed in the same way you would scribe baseboard molding for a wavy floor.
Finally, my Tacoma came with an integrated plastic bedliner, which I have always hated. It is way too slippery. The smooth side (top) of this mat appears to be almost as slippery, so I flipped mine over. The round dots are facing up and seem to be a little more grippy.
Thanks for the idea!
Thick, damage resistant, some decent insulation. Good move. Always good content Joe.
Thank you Nick…. Stay tuned for more exciting part of this project 😀🙏
looking forward to the camper video
Crap, I’ve been logged into my other RUclips account that I use for work. I’ve missed your last few videos!
I need a version of that for my 4Runner.. I bought a slide-in liner, but it’s basically a plastic tray that shifts around easily. Love yours! And I still just love how you make everything rather than buying a commercial product. Your stuff is always so much better than anything on the market 👍🏻😁
Great job
Thank you!
Nice! 👍
Thank you!
Line art at its finest
😊🙏
I wouldn't say that you were rambling but even if you were we love watching your videos. You seem to always teach us another way or something new. THANK YOU!
This will be a rad project! Looking forward to seeing more. I miss all the builds lol so any new ones are a treat
I am definitely excited for this project. Should be very similar to the travel trailer build series. And also result in a lot more consistent uploads too. Stay tuned and thanks for checking out this somewhat boring precursor project to the one I’m really interested in 😁🙏
Not boring at all in fact I love the bow tie method with this thick rubber mat or horse mat. In fact it’d be a great idea for the shop, a dog house or chicken coop, etc. I enjoy all the builds you come up with and appreciate the time and effort that goes into sharing your projects! Btw I watched the framing of this mini camper and it’s awesome! I’ve got to learn how to weld lol take care 🤘🏼
That is a great use of the horse mats. I have a tent that mounts in the bed of my truck and I use a set of the interlocking rubber tiles to cushion the truck bed. I bet the horse mats would work better and could stay in the truck. Going to follow the camper build with interest.
Thanks! I don’t think these would be as cushiony as those tiles….but yes, the advantage is that it can just stay in here.
Stay tuned for the truck camper project….videos should be coming out real soon😉🙏
@@homesteadonomics I have a bed mat in my truck but it has ridges and valleys so i use the tiles to soften them a bit. air mattress keeps me comfortable when I use the tent.
Great idea, always enjoy your videos 👍😁
Thank you! Stay tuned for the truck camper build….it’ll be coming up soon!
I’m planning to use an insulation board with a stall mat over the top as a base for mine.
I actually need mine spaced up slightly so the 50mm insulation will add as a riser plus some insulation for under the floor
you want a bullet proof liner. find some old conveyor belts like from closed coal mines. i mean they will stop a 22 at 50 feet.
Yeah those are super durable. I actually used some strips of one to act as the spacer for the batter box build on my DIY travel trailer project. But for this I prefer the little bit softer feel of the rubber stall mat.
Very cool project.
Thank you Daniel! I’m very much looking forward to this camper build😊🙏
@@homesteadonomics I’m looking forward to seeing your method and ingenuity so I can copy them on our projects.
Great idea
Awesome Joe!
Olive approved. 👍
Yes! She’s really going to approve of it when we go on our first trip in it😊
,a cool video keep up the great content.. Thank you……
Thank you Jorg😊🙏
@@homesteadonomics Thank you very mutch... have a nice Weekend.... see you….
Nice Job
I probably would have Raptor lined it then put the horse stall mats….but great none the less 👍🏾
Um salve do Brasil
And hello 👋 back to you!😊🙏
MMS a mobile man shed!
Yes yes! Perfect acronym!😉👍
👍 Any ideas on how to cover up the bolts in the tailgate? When I drag stuff out of the bed of the truck, particularly garbage bags, they catch on those bolts and 1/2 the time they tear open.
Thats cool only bad thing about it is it will trap moister so all those spots of primer will suck moisture and rust if i were you i would put a spray in liner and use that on top it definitely seems strong as linex or stronger good video thank you i did not know you could get that kinda of ruber will definitely have to check it out thanks again!!!!!!!
Every truck I have had with a factory plastic bed liner has had bad rust problems Ford Chevy and 2 dodges one was free after I bought my first 98 Dakota swore to never buy dodge from the 90s up the second was free and was on its 3rd round of replacement parts lol so I guess not completely free lol
I thought about using this stuff but by the time i buy the mats and have to fit them neatly i just figured it would be cheaper just to spray the Raptor. No to mention im not too crazy about having to piece them together. Dont get me wrong i like the whole idea and i actually used some old conveyer belt that was 5 ft wide and you talk about stout. Holy shit but it also weighed about 120 lbs so i just got tires of trying other options and just sprayed. Im going to be doing a coatover with some new 2 cartridge rhino liner. Now thats the true professional bedliner when its in 2 cartridges like big caulk tubes. The one im gonna try i think is called Phoenix Guardian (same as Rhino). Idk i guess ill find out when i try to attempt it. But the stall mats work too
I like the bowtie, joint, but did you consider any type of glue to bond the seam together? Red Barn suggests a urethane based caulking adhesive such as Sika-Flex 221 or 227, which is black in color
Could you make concrete stamps from horse stall mats?
In road salt country remove it in winter! Salt and debris accumulates under them and can rot a box out in 2 years! Why spray on bed liner became so popular up here!
Yes, That definitely wouldn’t be good in an area where they spread road salt.
Just a question Joe. How many razor blades was harmed in making this bedliner? 😅😅😅😅😅
Chris
Forgot to replace the placeholder title @1:03 😊
🤦♂️🤪
i love your videos, but they haven't showed up in my feed for awhile.
Thank you! Sadly I’ve been hearing that for about 2 years. I don’t know if I’m shadow banned or what has happened.
thanks for the personal response. Yes I hate RUclipss algorythim or their biasis.@@homesteadonomics
Great idea and well thought out installation. Are keeping the Locals channel going?
Thank you Jim!
About the locals channel….you should be seeing something very soon on there. I’m doing some soul searching to see if it’s something I want to keep up. As you have seen, it’s been hard for me to keep consistent uploads between work, family obligations, etc…. And if I’m not out able to offer good value to those watching I am contemplating refunding the supporters and shut it down. I had thought I’d have more engagement on that platform and do more of those kinda off the cuff videos. Of course, I did only do one mention of it on here and I know I should’ve done more….but I was thinking I wanted more content there before I started mentioning it more here. I guess I ‘chicken and egg’d’ the thing…. As in neither came first🤦♂️
But I will let you know soon and I will make sure everyone gets what they contributed….
@@homesteadonomics well stated, assembling good content is a in-depth, time consuming process. Thanks for the reply!👍🏼👌🏼
