I spent the past two weeks with a Mexican family (from Mexico, living int he U.S.), and the women still do these things. Boys only helped if they wanted to, and that was rare. To be fair, they were the ones doing most of the work outside the home. It was a fair trade. My friend from that family does the dishes and cleans when he visits me, but he will not cook.
Some are and some aren’t, I’m Mexican and we are kinda trying to change that, making my dad and brother help with the house, it gets us into fights and all but it made us (my mom and I) realize that my father and brother depend a lot on us because they don’t know how to do a lot of stuff, it’s hard but I think it’s something every family should try to bond and reach equality.
Over here in the Los Angeles, many of us do live like that. My sister and mom would be in the kitchen and serve me a hot meal and not let me get up. But, at the same time, there were expectations for me to be a man and perform outside of our home. As someone previously stated, it was a fair trade and I really appreciate these things as a grown up. There's also the heavy partying of course and peer pressure to have at lease one drink and take some food home while you say good bye for more than 30min.

lmfao Can definitely relate to some of these. The "I don't drink/smoke" scenario actually happened to me years back while dating a Mexican. Her younger sister actually commented in Spanish "that's weird! a black who doesn't drink?". I love how the family makes the girl the centre of attention whenever you visit them though. Also, for others out there: NEVER EVER criticize Mexican soap-operas PLEASE. Her cousin asked my opinion on Telemundo once during a small gathering, and I said I only used to watch them during my childhood days since the old ones were really dope such as: Secrets of the Sand, Marie de Los Angeles, etc.) but now their plot/story lines are not so amazing and are unrealistic. I paid the ultimate price throughout that relationship, wishing I could take it back.
I'm Mexican, but my mother doesn't make me "serve the lords" just because I am a woman. However, I understand that there are still families like this and yes, it's part of the culture. I'm very proud to be Mexican though, there are so many other great things!!

lmfao Can definitely relate to some of these. The "I don't drink/smoke" scenario actually happened to me years back while dating a Mexican. Her younger sister actually commented in Spanish "that's weird! a black who doesn't drink?". I love how the family makes the girl the centre of attention whenever you visit them though. Also, for others out there: NEVER EVER criticize Mexican soap-operas PLEASE. Her cousin asked my opinion on Telemundo once during a small gathering, and I said I only used to watch them during my childhood days since the old ones were really dope such as: Secrets of the Sand, Marie de Los Angeles, etc.) but now their plot/story lines are not so amazing and are unrealistic. I paid the ultimate price throughout that relationship, wishing I could take it back.

As a Mexican women, personally my family isn't like this. But there still is many families who do stick with these old traditions. Of course, I still listen to Mexican music and eat Mexican food but the mentality of women doing everything for men is not in my book. Still a struggle but times are changing.
