Can you imagine what it must be like to come home, disfigured brutally by war, only to be abandoned and reviled by your own family because of how the battle changed you? What a nightmare unending...
Oh wow, the opening scene made me feel so utterly depressed, more than a lot of war horror games you've done. I don't know why, but goodness, it made me think of the terrible sadness of war, and the horrors those poor men must have seen and experienced. I'm guessing you're playing as Paul, the younger brother? And the reason the mother doesn't accept him is because of how disfigured he is (which we heard when he asked for help)? The only thing is, if it IS Paul, I'm wondering why he still has his left arm, at least as seen in this alternate world with the ruins and the trenches. Definitely invested in the story! Looking forward to the next part. P.S. I love that moment in the bathroom where you take one look at the ball in the tub and then turn and try to leave. It felt like straight out of a horror (comedy) film! And then the door ends up being locked....
To be honest i got confused about that myself whether its paul or johannes and his hand. Because if you go back the first moment he woke up and got out of bed you can a quick glimpse of a left hand. Then he read the note to paul from Johannes so you think okay he's paul. Then he looked at the thing in the closet giving the prompt johannes breathing heavy as the character starts to do that so you think okay were Johannes. Buuuuut then all the memories he hears prompt johannes and you whenever the boys talked. So it be a bit odd
What a nightmarish walk through the psychological effects of war. This game is PTSD made interactive. Wonderfully oppressive and eerie atmosphere, amazing sound design, and an intriguing story. I definitely want to see the mystery unfold and find out whether this soldier can ever really "come home" again.
How interesting that we hear about the “rest cure” prescribed for the mother so soon after our convo about The Yellow Wallpaper! The line about injecting quicksilver sent me down a rabbit hole of research to learn more about the effects.
@@Laura_5757 I went down the same rabbit hole, Laura! My first reaction to the mother being injected with mercury was, "no wonder she's losing her mind!" However, I was surprised to read that injecting mercury has a different outcome than inhaling mercury vapors, as hatters did. Either way, it ain't good. 😆
@@Scriptor13 That’s hilarious! I mean, not the symptoms of injecting quick silver, but the fact that we both started Googling from the same exact line!
I wanted to know more about the backstory involving the mother and grandfather. How she started 'acting strange' when he moved in, how her voice changes when she mentions him staying with them and again when the boys are loud during his nap and the entio of how cruel he is(and her husband becoming the same). Sounds more to me that the grandfather was the issue, and based off notes it sounds like the mother is French while theyre German and with the time period involved..... I hoped we'd find out much more about that.
Well, I think the fairly regular injections of mercury (aka quicksilver) did her absolutely no favors. They didn't know back then how VERY VERY BAD it is, it's scary to think how long it was used as a medical treatment, how many people it drove mad. The grandfather was obviously a very negative influence on her life but the almost childlike tone in her voice as she spoke of "the cuckoo" feels like she's losing touch with reality. Which the spiritualist/occultist was hardly helping with.
What the actual....? In the most successful of meanings. I haven't been this shook/horrified since 'Martha Is Dead'. This is very intense, but I would like to see how it plays out. My (very limited) theory so far is: The prologue was Johannes. He was horribly disfigured in that shelling (lost an arm and half of his face, at least) but did survive and was sent home. His mother couldn't deal with accepting "what was left of him" in place of her hale and hearty son -- which, let's face it, is a hard turn to make, especially in 1918 -- and so called "it" a "cuckoo" (referring to the bird of that name who lays its eggs in other birds' nests, replacing that bird's offspring with its own), tells everyone he's dead, locks him in the attic, and tries to bring him back from the dead... even though he's right upstairs. So that's not gonna work, even if it was actually possible (but hey, 1918. Still a heavily fanciful time period). But Paul (who I think the PC is), who is *actually* dead (I think), nobody gives a hoot about bringing him back, or wailing so hysterically over him that you have to be poisoned with bloody quicksilver (mercury) to shut you up. So I do want to know Paul's deal. And also what is/was left of this family and how on earth they were possibly surviving these multiple impossible crises.
I was thinking similarly. I hadn't come to the conclusion that the protagonist is dead but just that he is unwanted in some way and Johannes was the favorite child. The dead theory is neat, though it changes it from PTSD to purgatory/Hell. Hopefully whatever it may be, the story is really good and we aren't left disappointed.
Ooh, that would make a lot more sense! I thought the mother was referring to Paul (who we are playing as), and thus assumed he was the one in the prologue as well, so disfigured that she doesn't care about him anymore because he's just not her son physically. I think your theory is the correct one, and that makes it even more tragic than it already was...
Three Mothers, three gods, three devils. Mother Tenebrarum, Mother Lachrymarum, and Mother Suspiriorum. Darkness, tears, and sighs. A horror game involving the Great War and inspired by the Three Mothers of Dario Argento. Oh my, it seems indie horror devs are waking up from the SH2 rip-offs and PS1 VHS horror games with masked psychos. It is the spirit of Halloween that is blessing us.
Yessss thank you so much for the upload cj!!! Just gave my little one a bath and came to check to see if you uploaded anything and this pops up!! Perfect timing so excited!!!
This was riveting. Gorgeous music in the invocation scene! Loved the eerie melody and the adding of layers as you moved though the process. I really look forward to the next video if you do continue. ?
I'm really liking this so far ! Good visuals, great sound design, solid voice acting, varied environments and intriguing sorry (let's not talk about the interactive recording ^^). Really looking forward to part 2 !
Please do more of this! I finally got my husband hooked on your playthroughs, and we are quite enamored with this one. Its really interesting! Please do a full playthrough!
Oh man, I super love the Mother of Sorrow's look! The build up was absolutely fantastic, leading up to it - especially that heart-in-throat moment where she's so tenderly reaching towards you, but you have no idea if that's a good thing. I'm also interested in seeing more of the story! When I saw how much was left unresolved and this was a single video, I almost thought that'd be it... but if there's more, I definitely want to see it, and from you, CJU! Also, forgot to say before, but i'm loving the new setup of what we can see of your room. Lovely wall!
Honestly, I wasn't sure I was going to like this, but I am so invested! It's amazing so far, and I am really enjoying it. Thank you so much for playing it, CJU 🖤
The voice acting is great. Also the hands look natural (it's a difficult feat, hands are notoriously difficult to get rightl) so gg to that, it impressed me. Edit: level design is also great!
Music in game menu is beautiful. And I love Art Nouveau elements in the house. Interesting plot, good graphics. It would be good to see how this game end.
Please could you continue playing this game? I’m very curious & excited to see more of your gameplay & how this story plays out. Thank you Chris, absolutely love watching your playthroughs. 😊
In the begining I thought ur task was relay the message you recieved. You kept running past soldiers saying they were awaiting orders. I'm reminded of the Oscar winning Redford film "Ordinary People". Mommy loses her all-star athelete fave son and is left with the damaged, sensitive baby brother. When developing the film Robert Redford would go down the shore and kept seeing a lone figure moving among the rocks then taking a seat to watch the waves. He finally went down to meet this person. It was actress Mary Tyler-Moore. She had lost her husband and took to going down to look at the sea. Redford offered her a role in the film on the spot. She portrayed the mom.
First thing I noticed was the beautiful modelling of the Kar-98 when you pick it up, attention to detail got me interested immediately. Another excellent Indie game for 2023, got some Layers of Fear vibe from the ambience and voice work but overall a mix of all sorts in here.
War games are not my favourite, but this is interesting. What’s in the attic? What’s in the basement? Will Johannes ever be himself again, for his mother’s sake? What I find interesting is that when he was “killed,” he was missing his left hand. While you have been playing him, he has his left hand. So, are you real, or a “ghost” of what once was? I’m curious to know.
When i started watching the video I did not think the game would be like but I am very gladly surprised. This is excatly the kind of horror I love, a mix of the horrors of the reality of war and a supernatural touch with the spirits. The pace is enjoyable and the story is intriguing, leaving me wanting more ! I really hope you do the full game on your channel it really seems like a good one. As always i really think that you are a great commentator CJU and your let's plays are so fun to watch
Once again the horrors of the Great War. It surely got this PTSD vibe plus the story is very captivating! The accidental gas in the church is somehow pushed too much, although I understand they wanted to be brutal even more. I have this thought that Mother of Sorrows could be only real mother for Paul if his own mother feels like rejecting him for now.
I was hoping you would play this. It is a very good game I'm sure you would enjoy. The atmosphere is well done and the story, while it's nothing you haven't seen before, is solid. Hope you keep going with it.

What I like about the mother's use of the word cuckoo, as sad as it is considering the circumstances, is that it holds a double meaning. Cuckoo birds are notoriously brood parasites. They'll lay their eggs in another bird's nest and, when they hatch, the baby cuckoos tend to push the other baby residents out of the nest to their deaths. So the metaphor that she's raising a child not her own, an imposter for all intents and purposes, who is also "insane" feels clever to me. Given the fact that a part of him _did_ die on that battlefield could also feel like, from her perspective from an unstable mindset, that he really did kill her son and came back to replace him which leans more into the cuckoo bird part.
Can you imagine what it must be like to come home, disfigured brutally by war, only to be abandoned and reviled by your own family because of how the battle changed you? What a nightmare unending...
thats ridiculous and superficial for the family to do that

Hi Chris!
"MORGENGRAUEN" means breaking dawn in german.
Btw, lovely pronunciation :)

Its official! CJU has played so many horror games that he knows whats up! Lol. "SEE!?!"
I'm glad you got to this, Chris! Um, good-looking horror, you say? I'm in! Will you be playing the new DLC for Resident Evil 4?
i would love to see you play the full game. interested how the story will unfold for sure!
"I dont really want to alert the thing. Oh look, cans!"
this game is too damn good to be only a indie game, lets hope it gets picked up by some with a higher budget. if not then this is still great
Bigger budget productions are crippling, Indie development always for more freedom.
I would love to see a full play through of this!
I am loving this game. Thanks for the bright spot today 😊😊

Yes, play the whole thing. The answer is always yes.
Chris the wait for this game to finally be released felt like forever, but jeeeez, every second of that waiting was sooooo worth it ❤
Looking forward for pt2 onwards
This was so good! Can't wait for more!
Interesting rendering of WW1. Looking forward to watching the rest of the series.
What unholy tapestry of nightmares is this??! 🙀
IDK why he didn't play it I was really looking forward for the playthrough
I hope there is a part two! It was just starting to get good!
Already seen a gameplay of this game, and I know you re going to enjoy. But I want to see your take on it. So, yes, ply more of it, and I'll watch.
Some of the area reminds me of The Conjuring House played by Chris a few years back, which I reckon is still one of the best game I enjoy watching Chris played, hv watched it over and over again, think hv watched 2 or 3 times throughout the years already 😂
At very begin, in home after the accident with barbed wire, I had a vibe with Layers Of Fear. I don't know, just brought it to my memory.
I'm not gonna lie, that barbed wire scene fucked me up a bit. That was disturbing
Please turn into a series love it
There are 3 endings, i think so will be intresting to see which one you get
They set you up! There were no other candles!!
I would've much preferred if this game _didn't_ go the "psychological horror" route and would've just been about horrifying monstrosities stalking the trenches of WW1.
It feels disjointed and just hops all over the place for a pretty done-to-death "inner hell" concept or yet another Jacob's Ladder.
Morgengrauen in German translates to "dawn" in English

It keeps jerking me out of the immersion

Ominous sounds for sure, It's a horror game

any time the sound plays that signifies that the notebook is updates i expect the skyrim level-up sound to follow it

My theory is this is some kind of Jacob’s Ladder type situation. Processing the trauma of death before the soul can move on.

Now you must continue to get yourself sorted. Don't worry...we're coming with!
This game is gorgeous! 😊
...and then they formed a dance company!
Ah now we are talking!

Though that strong British accent in what are supposed to be German characters makes them a bit less credible :)
You can always play with German voices as well - I guarantee you they are good 😉
