Poor Johannes- my heart hurt for him. To endure so much pain and trauma... not only betrayed and left behind by his brother but then to come home and be tortured by his mother who couldnt accept/handle the truth of what had become of her favorite son. She literally cut bits of him off to make the dummy- his hair and even his flesh maked up the heart patch on the dummy's chest!

This game brought up a lot of issues - apart from what the family went through was the war itself. Landscapes totally devastated, millions of people and animals dead - it was like going through hell. And only 21 years later, they started up again. And we’re still doing it…..

Humans have waged war since we lived in caves. Give anything complex emotions, such as Anger and being Jealous of what others have that you yourself do not have, and conflict is imminent. Also "We're" not still doing it. The Rich and Powerful do it, while the not so rich and powerful die in the mud.

I watched two other RUclipsrs playing this game, and they didn't even try to figure out the plot and undrstand what happened to the characters. Of course, those RUclipsrs got the bad ending.
I'm so glad that Chris got the good ending. I almost cried.
It was such a good portrayal of trauma and PTSD. I could feel the pain of the main character and his brother.

I legit teamed up during that final scene. The near idyllic reunion with the faint sound of gunfire and screams of pain just barely there. Representation of Paul’s PTSD? Dying dream as he bleeds out on the battlefield? You’d think Johannes would be restored in the afterlife, so I choose to believe they really did get to come home.

This happens quite rarely to me, but the ending of this game was enough to make me moved and feel both pain and relief at a good ending. An extraordinary and amazing game, and CJU is always made many good decisions during the game. Well done!

I agree. This was such a solid ending and I am so glad the devs didn't leave us on a cliffhanger or dangle part of an ending in our faces. My only critique is that it doesn't make sense for the mom and dad to do a complete 180° turn from how they behaved the rest of the game, but oh well. It was still great to watch this playthrough and I'm happy that we got to see the good ending.

@mason74551 Well, maybe it's wishful thinking on the side of Paul - let's face it reality often times don't allow us anymore for that reconciliation to happen.

Kudos to the Hekate team. That was a really welll-crafted, engrossing game. As someone whose family has been career military for several generations, I really appreciate Hekate's thoughtful treatment of the ravages of war both on military members themselves and on the families who wait for them. Human dignity is, indeed, inviolable. I am _so_ glad that Chris' choices led to the good ending. Anything else would have been very distressing. Also, thank you, Chris, for treating this subject with the gravitas it deserves.

WHOA. What a game....Just...what a game. The pain I felt for poor Johannes especially cannot be put into words. 😭 This was so beautifully (if not tragically) done. Thank you for playing this, and kudos to the creators! (I had actually wondered if the disfigured person would end up being Paul, hence not being able to see yourself in the mirror until the end and having you go through the same route as "Johannes" at the beginning. I thought they might end up showing that the person who went that route and was blown up was actually Paul. I'm glad they did not.)

My heart. What an amazing story. Disregarding the horror elements, the story itself could have been based on true events. I am moved to tears.
The horror elements of the game very well done. I don't feel like there were any cheap jumpscares. The very real horrors of war were more than enough. The monsters were very well done, very scary. The Officer representing the MCs guilt as both commander and survivor was incredibly well played, and the MC embracing him at the end was ... immensely moving. Sorry, I am still feeling emotional as I write this.
A very well done story, and psychological horror. Thank you for sharing.

It was a great tribute to those who fall and those who lived. For the issues that the survivors and their loved ones go through after that calamity. I was sad as I thought, I do figured out that pilot was Paul after seeing the drawing of Paul as a pilot and Johannes as a bird but overall the fact they used the figure as a symbolic consolation was giving me sense of hope that was very needed.
Thanks Chris for choosing this game to play! As always you make it more entertaining but also you did give your respect to the story when it should be. That's why you are the best!

This was a wonderful playthrough to watch.
I'm a new fan of yours, as my previous main horror game RUclipsr recently decided to stop playing horror games in favor of other types of content. A lot of that person's fanbase recommended you as a replacement and I'm glad that they did as I very much enjoy your content; particularly your ability to make written notes and documents interesting. A lot of RUclipsrs who play horror games on here stumble in that area, usually because their reading abilities aren't very good, whereas you have no such issues.
Really pleased I subbed here, not only because of the high quality of your playthroughs but also the wonderful turnaround. I've got a lot of your content to catch up on but I'm impressed at how regularly you produce new videos.
    Keep up the good work!

That was both a satisfying and very satisfactory conclusion. On a design level, I immensely appreciated the sensitive yet appropriate visual treatment of Johannes' terrible physical disfigurement. I'm also glad he got a prosthetic arm, that he was drawing again, and that his gaze was direct, but sane.
On a writing level, I was floored by the revelation that Paul had been held in a POW camp. That explained so, so much about how he even came to be wrestling with so many issues, when he was trained quite rigorously to ignore them all. I don't know what brought his parents to return to reality and focus on what was really important to them (each other and their family), but I'm glad they were able to.
Well done to the entire Hekate team! Fabulous job🙂. And thank you for playing and sharing, CJU!

I felt like when I saw the family all holding hands, it felt more like gathering for a prayer of some sort... and I think after an event like the first World War, and them managing to miraculously survive through that, grateful prayers wouldn't be out of place.

Reminds of the 80s Nick Cage film "BIRDY". Two friends from the 60s, one into Ornithology, go to Vietnam. They come back injured, the one locked into a state. Cage as the bestie figures out what it is. Great theme "Birdy's Flight" by Peter Gabriel.
It wasn't until the 80s that the US began to formally recognize Nam Vets and finally welcome them home, hence all the 80s Nam movies.
The game's conclusion hit too close to home, so I'm speechless atm, but it was an awesome series.

When I started watching the series I already had formed very strong opinions about the German leadership during the WW1, so this game hasn't changed that. What I couldn't help thinking about though was how this isn't too dissimilar to what I'm seeing today around me. War is a glorified ritual of human sacrifice with extra steps. Just throw in enough men hoping for a desired outcome. I hate it.

  • @fredd3233

That was pretty good : great visuals, great audio (despite some audio glitches), solid voice acting (even though it is super weird to hear German soldiers voiced with British accents), and the game is well written, I really appreciated that. Only two complaints : it's way too dark at times as Chris mentioned, and I do believe several sections dragged on a bit too long, maybe the devs could have tightened things a bit here and there. But all in all, a very solid game !

But don't get me wrong : I was fine with the use of English here, and I'm really glad they avoided doing a poor German accent (even if they did it super briefly with the French soldiers, and Madeleine). It's just the fact that sometimes they sounded SO British it pulled me out of the game a few times. See what I mean?

The ending reminded me of the final episode of Homicide: Life on the Street. A main character Lt. Giardello played by Yaphet Kotto dies and returns to their precinct which is empty save for a little girl skipping and prancing around the desks. She's the victim in an unsolved case that plagued one of the detectives.
Seated at the table in their kitchenette playing cards are the actors who portrayed detectives that were killed off throughout the run of the series. They invite him to have a coffee and danish which he was never allowed to have due to high blood pressure. He takes a seat then notices an empty chair pulled out.
He asks who's it for and they say there's another who will be on their way but they don't know who it is. Giardello becomes alarmed but they tell him there's nothing he can do about it. They deal him some cards and begin chatting and joking as Giardello drinks the coffee then the camera tracks away from them.
An amazing show. In an uncanny twist, a year later, one of the show's producers was a passenger aboard one of the flights that crashed into the Twin Towers on 9/11.

I think the only thing that bothered me with the game was how it much like most media depicting the war in any way do forget various powers and people at the time didn't view it quite as extremely horrific as we do, for while there were memoirs made detailing how one soldier viewed it as horrible said memoir was rebuked by another vet of the time who would describe the author as a pansy or a coward. The war didn't stop various groups successfully rallying for another war 20 odd years down the line after all and what caused the loathing of war in the countries after that one was not the destruction wrought by it but a reeducation and orientation by much of the leading western powers.
Now I'm kinda wanting a game covering the pains of that period from one of the peoples that were under the Russian Empire, particularly covering the Russian civil war which would cause something like 7 to 12 million deaths including civilians on it's own.

Good game but I felt it was a little all over the place a little hard to follow

yay, the ending. have not bothered with this as i could not get into it, gave up before making it through the first part, tried a bit of part 2 and just fell asleep. 😴

It was rough in some sections. I had to rewatch some parts in sections bc I watch at night 💤 😴 and that was difficult at times. Good ending though.

34:10 it was only by God’s power they returned, not by the virgin mary cause she had other kids so she wouldn’t have been a virgin especially if she had other kids as well as being only a human, thats why its important to focus on God the Father and put your Faith in his son Jesus Christ who was the Word of God in the Beginning of creation before Adam and Eve even came to be
