Floor is not an opera singer turned metal. She studied 1 year opera and 1 year music theatre at the conservatory after graduating from the then new Rock Academy in 2003. She calls herself a musical nerd and is always keen to put new skills in her already filled musical toolbox.

I saw them live last November. They were good and Floor was on point, but Marko’s absence was obvious. So, I prefer to listen to the songs where Marko shined.

The studio version of this song has Nightwish's original vocalist Tarja. I like that version as well but Floor's vocals in particular take it to another level. Floor is my favorite vocalist in any genre of music though, and Marko compliments her so well with his vocals. I love that change up in the tempo by Jukka leading into the breakdown and Emppu's guitar work here. Ash's words of wisdom: don't trust Urban Dictionary lol.

The “scream” at the end is called a glissando, going from low to high and back, for classically trained singers this is an exercise to warm up the vocal cords, so Floor will do this probably every day before breakfast .
The scary part is that she’s this good with about 1 year of true opera training ….imagine with constant training and study and concentration just on opera????? But thankfully for all of us she’s a metal head and can still sing classical style when needed in all those metal songs we love.

@@ashlenamusic If you decide to watch the live video of the Greatest Show On Earth, it would be beneficial to get familiar with it first. Just briefly. It starts with creation of Earth and continues with evolution. Also includes evolution of music in very short parts that last couple of seconds each.
Lyrics might sound odd because there is very specfic vocabulary related to the subject.
My personal preference is Tampere version because of the beginning and I prefer whistle as one of the instruments. Also Floor's dress is more suitable for it since it describes DNA and lighting is better in Tampere concert, in my opinion. Name of the song comes from a book by Richard Dawkins.
Wembley version has better added specific noices and better ending.
If you watch the Poet and the Pendulum. Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Pit and the Pendulum plays a big role in it. Swaying pendulum descending in order to kill the narrator in the story. It is very personal for the song writer and composer and relates to a dispute with former band member that got ugly in public. He got depressed and kills himself in the song. Spoken parts are about this. End of the song is an actual conversation between the song writer and his parents. That song is no longer in their playlist in concerts.
I am not in Nightwish army and not an expert, but I hope I got this right.
And that Shoemaker is about an American geologist whose ash was sent to the moon and that is why much of the lyrics are written so that view is from the Moon to the Earth.
Try Last of the Wilds from the same concert to see if you like Nightwish without any vocals at all

Yep, NW fans play actual Air Guitars!! At this concert NW had been a band for 16 years and in the 2013 Wacken concert Floor had been the fill-in singer for 10 months. None of the songs were written for her voice. Didn't matter. She killed all 15 songs that night. The first album that Floor was lead singer was Endless Forms Most Beautiful, released in 2015. There are some Official Music videos from the album but they pride themselves as a LIVE band.
The reason I would want to see nightwish, well I love them all, and I think all of them are professional and very talented. But I think the greatest thrill would be FLOOR, CAN YOU IMAGINE HEARDING HER IN PERSON, RIGHT THEIR IN FRONT OF YOU, HITTING THOSE HIGH NOTES. hell then you got TUOMAS, HELL I WANT TO SEE THEM ALL. Anyone told you that , at all the songs you heard Floor was still a stand in for the official singer Annette.
They called here earlier at this tour to help them out , to stand in for Annette.
She did , but only got 48 hours to learn the whole setlist of this show (13 songs).

I'm 72 and found Nightwish about 5 years ago. The entire 1st year I spent finding all of their YT videos from Wacken to Wembley to Tempre to Argentina. I grew up on Cream, Stones, Beatles, Doobie Bros, Allman Bros, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Dylan, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Nightwish is the best music I've discovered in 30+ years. This band is simply on a completely separate level from anything being played in the United States. I hope you continue down this Nightwish rabbit hole, it just might be the best rabbit hole you ever go down. This band is that good. If you wanna see what Floor can do, in 2019 she was on a Euro TV show - Beste Zangers. She and her hero, Henk Poort did "Phantom of the Opera" - there are no words to describe this beside unbelievable. It will leave you with your mouth wide open.

You analyzed the Song Performance perfectly for me. And i agree, Floor was the Jackpot back in 2012 for the Band. Not in Terms of Money, but for the Versatility and Options that arouse with Her Skills, not only as Singer , but as an charsimatic likebale Human. Nope, male Singer wouldnt fit , or at least the Band would sound totally different, even with matched Skill( Thinking of Thommy Karevik from Kamelot/Seventh Wonder for Example)as they do now.

Jansen, is the most gifted performer they had so far. Her voice, presence and professionalism are bringing something extra special for sure. She herself needed the band too to develop further into the very accomplished singer and great frontwoman she is now. They found each other at the right time I guess. I follow her quite some time now. As I she is from Brabant in the super small frog country Holland. It always helps that we have some roots in common;-) Love your reactions!

You probably have to get used to the way Nightwish play music. One never know what's coming up the next second that's what I love. Very dynamic, progressive and different.

On the Wacken 2013 DVD Marko did an Introduction that does a great explanation of Romanticide.
This is obviously full of butterfly effects, but if we assume that lineup would have been Tuomas, Marko, Emppu and Jukka, pretty sure Nightwish would have been a very successful band without a female singer. They are simply too talented for that not to have happened. Of course, a really talented female singer gave them that special extra spice people love. We have to send a big thank you to Kari Rueslåtten in Norway, for why everything happened the way it did.

Well, Nightwish isn't that expensive, when it comes to concert tickets. I saw them twice with my wife in Frankfurt am Main / Germany in the Festhalle - and we had quite good places and payed just around 80€ (~85 $) each. Compared to other Bands like Metallica, where a pretty bad place easily cost you 200+ $ each it's quite affordable...
Oh, and by the way: 1) Nightwish is best serve live, and 2) apart from the fact that I think almost all of Nightwish's songs are phenomenal, one of my favorites is "Song of myself" - also from the Wacken 2013 concert. Enjoy!

Floor is a genuine storyteller. Her character starts cutesy and girly in this song. But she soon descends into unhinged primal rage by the end. There’s an entire movie in every Nightwish performance by her. If the producers could just keep the cameras on her face for more than three seconds at a time you could see how she acts out each number better. Alpenglow live in Mexico City does a better job of letting you see how she performs rather than just sings a song.
In general the elements of symphonic metal include a female lead singer. The contrast between a good female voice, the orchestral and choral elements, and the metal band is what gives the genre its particular sound. However, every element that makes up a symphonic metal band is turned up to 11 with Nightwish. They also throw in elements that are not typically there in other bands (basically anything played by their multi-instrumentalist Troy). Every person in the band is a past-master of their craft. The leader of the band, Tuomas (keyboards), writes 95% of their music and is nothing short of a musical genius. Since Tuomas started the band in 1996, they have been a huge force in defining and evolving the symphonic metal genre, and are kind of the gold standard in that space. To avid Nightwish fans like myself, they are the gold standard regardless of genre. They are just that good.
I grew up in the US in the 80s and didn't listen to heavy metal at all. I did listen to rock and hard rock, but as those genres disappeared from the mainstream and I didn't like what they were replaced with, I continued to listen to the bands and music of my youth while expanding into classical movie soundtracks and female artists like Celine Dion and Shania Twain.
I found symphonic metal in 2012 and haven't listened to much else since. It combines elements of almost all of the other genres of music that I like. It shouldn't work, but it does. Beautifully. Nearly all of the metal bands I have listened to since 2012 are from somewhere in Europe. One notable exception is Evanescence, from the US. They are the closest thing to Nightwish that many US listeners have ever heard. Which is sad. There is so much good metal music, from so many different sub-genres, to be had from artists that don't call the US home. I look back and realize I had been living in a musical bubble created by the US music industry. Luckily, the Internet, streaming music services, and sites like RUclips allowed me to break that bubble. But not until I knew it existed by hearing something outside of it.
Kudos to you for breaking your bubble. You may not become a super-fan of every genre or artist you find, but at least you will know they are there. Good luck on your journey. I hope it will include more Nightwish.
You should check out Floor Jansen's solo album, "Paragon", released in March of 2023. The entire album is on her RUclips channel. It isn't metal, rock, or pop. It is Floor. Every track is top-notch, but only some of them have music videos, which are all great. Of those, I would recommend "Me Without You", "Storm", "Fire", or "My Paragon" to begin with.

With your opera connection it's going to be interesting what you make of Nightwish with their original singer Tarja, as she's more operatic, especially on Phantom of the Opera.
Funny you mentioned cost to see live. Saw them live in Ireland and the tickets were way too cheap. They could have doubled the price and I would have still bought.

If you loved Storytime, you really should check out the official video for it. It features the 2nd vocalist Annette. Her voice is slightly poppier, but equally great.
You should give Last Ride of the Day, from the same concert, a go.
There is definitely something about Floor's tone that just gets to people . . . it's rare that a singer can induce tears, goosebumps, and whatever the heck a Floorgasm is, and she does it routinely. Tuomas' compositions contribute a lot to the effect; I've watched her with her former bands (Revamp and After Forever), and while her talent was obvious, I think is was wasted on generic-sounding metal numbers. With Nightwish, it's just one of those magical combinations, like Lennon & McCartney, that come along rarely.
Do check out "Shoemaker" (for once, the studio "lyric" version is the best of the lot - probably because it's so damned difficult, even for Floor). Her passagio at the end will melt you.

And that's an odd intro into why the words and attitude of the song are so harsh, and perhaps why the composition feels a bit disjoint and tattered. The subject matter (the breakup of a toxic relationship) is, imo, all too often relegated to melancholy and soft reflection/sadness.
This song takes that same relationship-going-wrong scenario and rips it's throat out, calls it names and throws the tattered bits to the four winds.
Sooo much more satisfying when you're in THAT moment.
Floor starts out the first verse toned-up to introduce her character, the poppy/cute voice is what some will try to convey as their 'true self' in a relationship, then busts into an aggro-belt with 'Tell me why no heart to cry'... yep, her character's a bit angry here.
The first vocals by Marco initially seem just like a 'necessary harmony'... but he's pretty much sticking to one note ("his note"/his character's point of view) ... they are both saying the same thing : "Leave me be", etc, TO EACH OTHER... The sounds of a breakup, indeed.
Some of transitions are fairly jagged changes in rhythm. Yep... I think I hear emotional gears grinding.
THAT's par for the course.
And that wonderful little dual slide near the end...

Floor gets the last word, soaring longer higher, lingering up at the top only to have the sound crew grab that lovely D6 and pass it into a nice delay (about 140-180 msec/2-repeat, I think.. I gotta check that) giving her that multiple-voice/Brighton Rocks-solo kind of self-harmony as she drops off the top-end.
.... and can we talk, just for a second, about how deftly she handles her passagio in that slide.... good lord, there's at least a two whole-step gap that she traverses with such ease and grace... you don't ( or at least *I* don't ) hear that transition... no breaks, no glitches, and just the slightest step-function in her vocal character.. and I mean, it is SMALL... every time I hear that, I get more impressed... after all that vocal chaos earlier in the song : to pull off that slide is just ... inspiring? Something... maybe it's her way of sound marking that point of the song and saying "yeah, it may have been written for someone else, but this song is MINE."**
Ah, who knows?
I'll never be in a position to ask her what her interp of the lyrics and performance are.
So hey, anyway, it's good to see yet another fresh face falling thru the ceiling of the Nightwish rabbithole.
There's lots of room, tho there are millions of souls in here.

No, male voice alone wouldn't do IMO. Nightwish has always had a female vocalist for a reason. They bring balance, the female element counterweights the male element.
Try something rather more recent than an 11 years old performance
