That front end is VERY RS200. Then you look at the side and think "Aha! Mk 1 Toyota MR2!". Then you see the back end and think "AHA! Nissan GTR!". It does look good. I'd not have one though: The seats are way to low!!
Kaixero Miata’s are surprisingly deceptive, at 6’2 I actually fit in one quite good, the foot well is quite deep so even though your sat low there’s actually decent leg room for taller people.
Installing a smaller steering wheel also helps. I'm 6'2" and the catch point for me in small cars is always that there isn't enough room between the clutch pedal and steering wheel for my left leg. But I comfortably drove a NB Miata for years once I installed a smaller MOMO steering wheel, including taking it on a 2000 mile road trip. I also got cloths seats (sink further) and did the foam reduction trick.

AZ-1: The official car of never being bought from the used cars section in Gran Turismo 2, until you find out you gotta buy one for the model races in both stock and racing modified trim. AZ-1: The official car of only being known about if you've played Gran Turismo, non gamers wouldn't have a clue about this car.
And when you're not in the car, it's "Please miss, please miss, please miss" as you're being chased out of Walmart by an AR-15 toting three-chin who just got let go from his cushy UAW gig and is looking for ANY foreign car to take out his rage on.
I’ve had mine for ten years now. I love driving it long distances, or through the Rockies. Last year I put an aftermarket exhaust header on and took off the air conditioning unit. This winter I plan on painting mine - I have some rock chips various wear and tear in the paint now. Mine was painted yellow before I got it and I’d like to put it back to its original colours. It’s an amazing car to drive, and like you, I am 5’10”, so it is a tight fit. But once you are in you’re fine. This car will never be popular, simply because there were so few of them made, and frankly, there aren’t that many left. Anyhow - thank you for the video!
If someone I knew had one of these, or even if it was just some guy that worked in the same building & I saw it in the parking lot every day, I would *never* get tired of asking "If I water it, will a real car grow?"

As a dude who drives a pick-up as well, I'll second the notion. It could probably go in the cargo box! But I could never have this, small cars are the recipe for me to drive like a massive throbbing wang because I can go wherever I want. "Oooh, you wanted that space in traffic/parking place/gas pump/whateverelse -too FUCKING bad, little car was there first!!!" I would park in the shopping basket thing and drive into any accommodating building like Clarkson on Top Gear.
In 10 years when a bunch of dudes blew their whole wad on this car and then realized it’s not realistically a good car is when I’ll be able to pick one up for a good price, and if it goes down enough I’m sure as hell gonna get one.
Tyler Sanders we get jdm cars in canada after 15 years. Years of neglect and inability to find parts really takes their toll. You really need to know what your buying when buying a jdm car thats been in country for a while. I had an alto works kei. Parts are impossible to find here.
Alex Strömberg that kind of undermines any regulations on safety or emissions standards made by your country. Most countries in the world actually try to improve those.
Tyler Sanders you think sweden isn't doing that? We have eletric plugs for Tesla everywhere and huge yearly taxes on diesel cars. and 80% tax on all fossil fuels, 1 liter (1/4 gallon) is almost 2 dollars here, so fuck outta here with that weak shit you're throwing. But car over 50 years doesn't even need to get inspected at least. So mods for days on those.
The LS has been praised for its compact size, but I think this kind of car is probably way too small for even an LS to swap into. I mean, it took effort to get it into a Miata, and that has at least some semblance of an engine bay. What people could try to swap into them are probably bike engines. Or ditch the turbo altogether, keep it NA and have a bike tach installed so you can rev it to 11000RPM like a damn F1 car from the '80s :P
I'm not a car person, but I had the pleasure of seeing this in person during my friend's New Year's Eve party yesterday, and had to look it up afterwards! He had to import it from Japan and drive it through 3 states. I was so surprised by how small it was and I loved how it looked.
Gran Turismo got me so hooked on this little thing because it was so much fun to drive, and yeah, the size difference was so staggering to the point of entertainment. It was a car you had to cheer on and just looking at real footage of an AZ-1, the feeling is still there. Yeah, I totally want one, but I'll never have the money for it.
Reminds me of the Daihatsu Copen I saw at the Geneva Auto Show in Switzerland in 2008. I opened the door and settled into the driver's seat, at which point it occurred to me that if I bought two of them I would have the world's fastest pair of roller skates.
You can't figure it out for yourself, they have to put it on the side of the car: "EXCITING MICRO COUPE" like being exciting is a feature, not an opinion. Weird. Is this a demo car from Mazda or something?
Japan loves its engrish expressions. Theres a video of Clarkson in a parts shop over there finding alloys and steering wheels with gems like "Just A Roller Skate Grand Tourer All Over The Physical Ironic Power" written on them.
I'm a little blown knowing that this was filmed in Hunt Valley MD, and some of your initial shots take place at a "game company", across the street from which is a medical tech firm that I work for. 10/10 would had walked 80 linear feet to had seen it. Thanks for the video! Cheers!
I saw one of these about a week ago in a Walmart parking lot. My co-worker and I both legitimately had to idea what this thing was. It's good that now I know, thanks RCR!
I'm starting to feel like I bought mine just in time. It was a cool $9k. I'm 6'2" and borderline fit. The biggest size issue I have is my leg getting squished between the steering wheel and the gear shifter in 5th. It drives awesome, tight, quick, and loud turbo noises all the time. And yes, it gets way more attention than even my DeLorean. (must have all the gullwings)
I own a Cappuccino in the US, I haven't got to drive an AZ-1 yet. But they use the same engine, It doesn't sound great stock, put a decent intake on it and exhaust, maybe an intercooler and ecu reflash with boost raised..it becomes a heavily turbocharged monster. Not in the speed of it but in the way it sounds. Outside of crazy 800whp supras, ls cars, etc, it makes the coolest turbo noises, once tuned a bit it will remind you of the old glory days of turbo racecars and the sounds they made.
Turbo kei engines have the coolest sound out of all engines IMO. Smart Roadsters are the same. They sound insane and are made for driving experience, not speed.
Japan eBay is called Yahoo Auction :) I sell Cappuccino, Beat, AZ-1 and many other JDM cars for a living, based in Japan... And I agree... I have an AZ-1 in stock now and my customers are fighting for it in spite of me telling them that it's the worst of the ABC in stock form! It doesn'T matter... They don't want another Cappuccino, they don'T want a Beat... AUTOZAM!!!! You didn't really review the car over the limit and how it is to push it so I'll add a little to that review... The AZ-1 has the worst stock suspensions EVER. The engine is located quite high and the suspensions are not hard enough which makes the body roll feel terrible! On top of that, weight transfert between corners make the rear feel extremely unstable as it lacks suspension to hold all the highly placed weight... Lift off oversteer is massive and you neither have horsepower nor a LSD to bring the car back on track once the tail goes out too far. Oh and it's CRAMPED. The Honda Beat is the slowest but if you're not TOO fat, anyone, no matter how tall they are can fit in one.... The Cappuccino is a bit tighter, but well, it feels fast and its worth the lack of room.. But the AZ-1?? Fuck me it'S tight! If you still have the stock steering wheel (which is HUGE) you won't be able to move your two hands on the wheel more than half a turn because your legs will block your hands! Oh and I'm 6'2... I fit.. but not fun! So yeah the AZ-1 is not very good... But I have one for sale if you want. 12k$, shipping to the US included (you still have to import it yourself...). But it's not very good... You have been warned.
Since you seem to know what you're talking about, what's your opinion on the Daihatsu Copen? Specifically the first gen, which they sold in Europe with left hand drive.
I have actually never driven one... I mostly sell to the US market and focus on 25 year old and over cars... I have never been attracted to them and never really cared to be honest... When it comes to lightweight FWD sports cars, I go with french (I'm french) or Honda. They know their shit :) In term of FWD japanese keicars, the Suzuki Alto Works RS-X (I've sold a couple) were pretty damn awesome. 550cc, revving over 10k rpm for a weight under 760kg. But yeah the Coppen is too new for me and I only sat in them... The Subary Vivio RX-R is good too... I don'T have a FWD version in stock but I'l be getting a 4WD one that will be delivered later tomorrow or after tomorrow. The Coppen. I don't know. I strongly believe this thing should have been RWD in the first place...
I remember this car from Gran Turismo 5 and loving it. I wanted it then and I want it now, but this video has made me realize that I really couldn't live with a car like this and I'm okay with that. *I still want it though.*
Mazda actually made three separate brands in the 90s. Autozam, Eunos, and ɛ̃fini. Autozam birthed this car, Eunos had the Roadster (Mazda Miata, or MX-5), and ɛ̃fini the RX-7 (later re-branded a Mazda). The sub-brands had other models as well, these are just some examples.
I remember driving this and the Honda Beat and Suzuki Cappuccino back to back to back in GT5 and GT6. My favorite was the Cappuccino. You should review one of those next!
I just picked up a Nissan Gloria from a guy in Indy with a yellow Cappuccino that he purposefully bought to hoon; calls it the 'crapuccino'. Damn that thing is awesome.
I know this is an ancient post, but I'm very tempted to try to put my AZ-1 in the bed of my long-bed Ram. Just to test fit it. Could probably even still open the gullwing doors with it in the bed.
You know, I've now owned my AZ-1 for 5 years now (wanted it for 15 before that: thanks, Gran Turismo), and it is the greatest car I ever drove. (Disclaimer: I'm 5'8" and dailied it while it ran (It needs a new turbo (Shipping from Japan is spendy (It hasn't run in a year (My heart is broken watching this video (and I wanted to use more nested parentheses.))))))
I just bought one of these in September 2022 and mine with low km's coming on te37s in mazdaspeed trim was just under 27. Ive been following the market since this vid came out and they're still steadily increasing in value. We'll see what happens in the years to come
Hell, I think I've seen more Tommy Kairas than Autozams, and they only made 500 of those. It's really not surprising that the AZ-1 would be rarely spotted. They've always been expensive. They are made from cheap steel, coated with typical shitty Japanese paint. Easy to crash, and not made to last long.
I was reading an article about cars up for import this year back in January and read about this little guy and was really interested, glad to see people are enjoying it. I just hope the car I want that's up for import doesn't get too much notice.
But the most important question is: is it any good at "slow car fast?" It it fun on a deserted back-road, working the 3 pedals hard, minuscule 3 cylinder howling away behind your head, narrow tires loaded to the limit, all in an effort to be even 5 mph above the speed limit?
I've seen one of these in Northern Europe sometime ago. Jeesh they are tiny, and that's coming from an European. Kinda...kinda, made me think of Daewoo Matiz and Tico (that Polish cube, as i called it, once you go in, you go out) cars that were...eh...popular(?) in Eastern Europe. Small cars are cute to look at, but...i wouldn't own one, mainly because you're part of the car when they take it to the crushers.
These videos make me sad since we never got something like this. :( We can never have nice things. Everything sucks. We didnt get this, didnt get foxbodies except the SN95, corvettes cost a fortune, didn't get nuffin. What did we get? Peugeos...

It hurts, so much
Kaixero Miata’s are surprisingly deceptive, at 6’2 I actually fit in one quite good, the foot well is quite deep so even though your sat low there’s actually decent leg room for taller people.
Plus you could do a foamectomy or proper buckets to sit lower in the car
I'm 6'2" and couldn't close the door without craning my neck forward... the AZ-1 will forever be a dream unrealized.
well a convertible miata for someone 6"3+ is a perso who will be staring straight at the top beam aboove the front windshield

In Japan, they have an Electronic Toll Collection system. It's basically Japan's equivalent of the EZ Pass.
Imagine it with a Hayabusa engine swap.
@DatsunRacer they have a name for that, it's called a cauffin.
people do that alot, people do that to basically every kei car
Another option might be a water buffalo engine. Still a Suzuki triple, but two stroke power.
I would do that. Maybe Quad Turbo. Fuck it.
Ls swap
im in love with those manga style owner manual depictions.
CreepinWhileYouSleepin same here. Someone should make an sol anime about a girl that owns an autozam lol

You have been warned.
traxnada I don't know why, but no matter how bad is it I still want one
Since you seem to know what you're talking about, what's your opinion on the Daihatsu Copen? Specifically the first gen, which they sold in Europe with left hand drive.
Well done on living such an awesome life
I have actually never driven one... I mostly sell to the US market and focus on 25 year old and over cars... I have never been attracted to them and never really cared to be honest... When it comes to lightweight FWD sports cars, I go with french (I'm french) or Honda. They know their shit :)
In term of FWD japanese keicars, the Suzuki Alto Works RS-X (I've sold a couple) were pretty damn awesome. I strongly believe this thing should have been RWD in the first place...
haha thank you :)
These are real, I saw one at a car show. It is cool as hell.
Only knew this car because of Gran Turismo 4. Looks like a fun little car ^^
I remember this car from Gran Turismo 5 and loving it. I wanted it then and I want it now, but this video has made me realize that I really couldn't live with a car like this and I'm okay with that. *I still want it though.*
Even if I bought one, I'm still 6'4"...
Damn. At least I can drive my 1990 Miata semi-comfortably.
Vectrex4Life It might be worth getting your legs shortened.
You're here?
So i'm finally starting reap the benefits of being 5'9
BandomBeviews Why yes, RCR is great.
Fellow tall.
I feel ya.
3 and a half - don't forget Amati, that was so close to launch for Mazda
I remember driving this and the Honda Beat and Suzuki Cappuccino back to back to back in GT5 and GT6. My favorite was the Cappuccino. You should review one of those next!
GT6SuzukaTimeTrials I didn't know you watch RCR as well.
GT6SuzukaTimeTrials I own one here in Texas
I just picked up a Nissan Gloria from a guy in Indy with a yellow Cappuccino that he purposefully bought to hoon; calls it the 'crapuccino'. Damn that thing is awesome.
This is one of the best reviews ever. Tone of voice, references (DC Comic profit margin LOL), what a winner. Glad to sub!
But the real question is could dads put that on the back of their pickup truck?
Marley freedom is not free
Baqofmapikkuppp truckkkkkkk
I know this is an ancient post, but I'm very tempted to try to put my AZ-1 in the bed of my long-bed Ram. Just to test fit it. Could probably even still open the gullwing doors with it in the bed.
My motorcycle is Japanese why doesn't the owner's manual have a cute anime girl showing how to (and how not to) perform basic maintenance?
The owner's manual of the AZ-1 could be my new favourite manga.
Didn't expect to get actual car history and Japan economy trivia in a Regular Car review.
theres going to be a flood of kai cars from japan and its going to be good.
I want this, I'm short as hell and that car just looks interesting
"Bro-dozers ready to vore you." Accurate.
I actually did 'awwwww' when you showed how small this little cutie is!
You're good, Mr. Regular.
I want one but yeah all the points Mr. Regular made and I’m 6 ft 2. So yeah not going to happen.
Yep, all the while I was like "wow, that looks cramped, I wonder how tall he is", and yeah. I'd probably put my back out just trying to sit in it.
I'm 6'4 and I daily an AZ-1. It can be done.
ZRaddue #masochistlife
That's a scary size. Your at the mercy of other drivers.
I'm also 6ft 2in. I would like to see Doug Demuro try an drive one since he's around our size
“The kind of friends you have when you are 12”. You are a genius my good sir
The first thing I do after watching a RCR review is looking up to buy the reviewed car.
Looks like multiple tundras wanted to eat that thing...maybe they think its sushi?
"Money can't buy popularity... but it can rent it." --Another gold nugget from Mr. Regular
SHRINKYDINKS
*MINI cooper, VW Beetle, Fiat 500, Audi TT and Mazda 2 owners everywhere start sweating*
There's a new "toy car" in town, and he wants your ass.
Dikembe Ousmane also. *Ford Fiesta*
"what's it like to have a girlfriend?" too real. I drive a pickup.
I just bought one of these in September 2022 and mine with low km's coming on te37s in mazdaspeed trim was just under 27. Ive been following the market since this vid came out and they're still steadily increasing in value. We'll see what happens in the years to come
These are super rare even in Japan so Stateside, they must be at about unicorn level.
They are definitely more exclusive in Japan than a Ferrari 458.
koopatroopa187 I see 458s all the time and I've seen more 2000GTs than I've seen Autozams. Unsurprising given how expensive they are.
I know a guy who knows a guy...
I was reading an article about cars up for import this year back in January and read about this little guy and was really interested, glad to see people are enjoying it. I just hope the car I want that's up for import doesn't get too much notice.
This looks like an absolute piece of shit that no one else would drive... I want one.
I never thought I'd see a car that I'd never seen before on this channel but, well, here we are.
But the most important question is: is it any good at "slow car fast?" It it fun on a deserted back-road, working the 3 pedals hard, minuscule 3 cylinder howling away behind your head, narrow tires loaded to the limit, all in an effort to be even 5 mph above the speed limit?
DeanoTXR53 "slow car fast" is now my new favorite phrase
There is an entire sentence on the side of the car
"Midship DOHC Turbo Exciting Micro Coupe"
tons of "those guys" saying WAD IZ DAT? DAT CAN FIT IN TEH BACK OF MY TRUCK HE HE HE
When this video pops up in my recommended, I always have to watch the brilliant first 5 seconds.
Here's my real car, here's my toy car
I love the plate to bumper ratio on this front end.
Japan, please stop making awesome cars, then only selling them for the JDM, we still love you.
As we still wait for the Honda S660
Ok if we are talking rarity when are you getting a BMW M1 on the show?
ten thousand far from a regular car, leave M1s to Doug Demuro.
My girlfriend is lithuanian and one of her old pictures has a tico in it. Eastern europes own lada
On a long enough timeline, everything gets an LS.
In this case, it's a 'busa instead.
We throwing a Cummings in it. TORQUE!
Drops a hyabusa engine in the back of there and holy shit would that be too much fun
phsyco123 *L S S W A P T I M E*
Beautiful music, Roman. My favorite to date.
This is the coolest thing I've ever seen
Easily one of the greatest regular car reviews
Looks like a car straight outta watch dogs 2. With a name straight outta GTA 5.
Glad the old rcr style is coming back. All the grunting and stuff
These videos make me sad since we never got something like this. :(
We can never have nice things. Everything sucks.
We didnt get this, didnt get foxbodies except the SN95, corvettes cost a fortune, didn't get nuffin.
What did we get? Peugeos...
Fuck you talkin about
wkeil1981 france
doesn't mean there are no interesting european cars, quite the opposite. americans never got some of our interesting stuff (and that's just as sad)
Switzerland even, we got even less.
Get a morris mini.
I want that owner's manual. It's like a little manga
Wait, kei cars are becoming legal? I need a Honda S660 stat!
7:59 - 8:02
Secret brony?
Also, I love the owner's manual pictures. :)
Ryushi Shiratori why? I don't understand
