Anyone notice that Michael merely has a minimal garage-band basic drum set? And he sounds so incredible with just the basic of all gear. That is TALENT. Clear and simple. Talent.

      @tavinmotionactive605 10 лет назад

Yes It is remarkable, but you have to consider , beyond his "amazing solo". The Harmony on this masterpiece is played by Michael and Chepito, and this is why this is recognized as pure Latin Rock .

+Green Infrastructure Buffalo NY Buffalo NY alot of us who grew up here in SF, noticed that years ago..I remember a bunch of guys who liked guys w/huge kits, and yet never really stayed in the pocket like Michael Shrieve..ever..to this day, one of the best drummers EVER..

Incredible performance from the Abraxas album. Santana was a full group project at this point . The only reason the band was called Santana was that Carlos Santana had the union dues. The entire band is incredible including the late Dave brown on the Fender. Also, Greg Rolie shows how to play a Hammond organ!1

Santana and the Who at Tanglewood was so great in 1970. They just came off Woodstock and then took that magic on the road, and then, All over the World!!!

Played this in my first garage band back in '69. Still to this day, it's one of the most adrenaline pumping songs to play. As soon as I start that opening bass line, the juice starts flowing and I'm time-tripping back to '69. What a rush!

  • @srgbuffalobuffalony7112

I wish they were still around - EXACTLY like this night.
This is historic and memorable and emotional and beyond incredible... all rolled in to one jam in one night by one band. This type of music and performance is LONG GONE.

Loved the Woodstock video because nobody knew who Santana was and they were floored. But the sound quality indoors is so much better. Now this might be my favorite live video of all time.

Sweet Jesus - this is the best video I've ever seen of them (Woodstock was inferior). It really captures what it was ALL about with this version of band - monster rhythm section and SHAMELESS pursuit of the body-high that it produced. It's what snagged us into Santana's world and shot him to the 2013 Kennedy Honors award. BTW, Rolling Stone panned them with their first review. We didn't give a shit.

    Holy cow!!
The Woodstock version is a pretty amazing moment. But this is a way better gig.
I've always thought of Shrieve's Woodstock solo as the only rock drum solo I could groove too.
BUT EVEN THAT aspect of this performance top the Woodstock version.
Not to take anything away from their Woodstock arrival, at all.
This is just so fully badass.
I hope "Smooth" era fans can feel how raw and wild a improvising live band Santana began as.

+C.J. O'Dell you are so right..growing up w/this band, i thought all drum solos were like this..at other shows, people went to the head or somewhere, and i always wondered why, until i realized there was only 1 Michael Shrieve..most drummers, while very good, can't hold a candle to him..especially on his bare-bones kit..amazing still to this day..45 years later..

I think the dude with the maracas is actually pretty funny :) I bet if I was him, I would do nothing less being up there in such an awesome moment having the time of my life with those maracas ;)
I also find the audience responding to him with energy and if you think about it, he did get people energized as well. Reminds me of the percussionist that played with Spyro Gyra that went on to become a big shot to this day...
That guy was a clown on stage totally out of control.

I'm pretty sure that's vocalist Rico Reyes, the guy that sang lead on "Guajira" (off Santana III) and contributed a lot of other background vocals. He later went on to sing with Azteca, a Santana "offshoot" that also had Neal Schon, Lenny White (Return to Forever) among others.
