    One of the sneakiest tricks is when a store like Wal Mart or HEB will stock the aisle of the checkout line with small, inexpensive items and snacks just at eye level with children.

      Chris Boom I used to work at Target and I have seen more tantrums thrown over those toys at the register to last me a life time. When kid actually laid on the ground kicking and screaming because his mom told him no.

      A Kayfabe That has nothing to do with the topic I raised. Yes parents need to have some control and discipline in their children, but cursing at children isn’t the answer. Anyway, after studying business in college, this is something we discussed. It’s target marketing.

    A fun thing to do with clearance bins, is simply to go through the whole lot, pulling the contents on to the floor. The good stuff is always near the bottom. As long as you replace the items back in the bin, after finding what you want, (and remember to deliberately put the good stuff near the top), the shop staff can't do anything about it.

    • @xmhkillz
      @xmhkillz 7 лет назад +19

      Only reason the good "good" stuff is on the bottom is due to the fact most shoppers do not see it so it stays down there with new items getting tossed on top every day.
      Stores want to get rid of there clearance, the longer it sits the lower the price and valuable space it takes up, they are not trying to hide it from shoppers to prevent people finding the good deals, Rather its low priority for the stores with limited labor priority so they stick it in low traffic areas where the eye sore does not scare away new shoppers walking in the door to buy milk.

    • @chaffegirl
      @chaffegirl 7 лет назад +13

      stores do NOT hide the good shit on the bottom! I worked in a kroger for 15 years and believe me we just wanted the stuff gone. we have new seasons and new shit to get out and also had a team of employees go through the clearance at least every other day to organize it so that it is as shop able as possible.

    • @kMeijer
      @kMeijer 7 лет назад +7

      TeaRex Gamer Most of the "good stuff" is purchased by employees before, or as soon as, the product hits the sales floor.

    • @xmhkillz
      @xmhkillz 7 лет назад +5

      Might be for some places but where I worked they fired people for holding stuff for themselves in the backrooms or hiding them on the sales floor.
      They went as far as to not allowing those involved in store markdowns to purchase the product without the stores asset protection approval.

    • @chaffegirl
      @chaffegirl 7 лет назад +6

      Where I worked if you got caught "holding stuff" you got fired or written up. Nothing is allowed to be held in the back by employees and nothing new is purchasable until it is placed out on the sales floor.
      Every company has a couple of assholes that ruin it for everyone but for the most part this stuff didn't happen.

      Yup.
      I love jelly beans, and this one brand (forgot the name. It's normally at Wal-mart) has 2 sizes they sell; a 20oz bag and a 40oz container. Thing is, after looking at the tags, it turns out the bad costs less per ounce than the larger container. So, getting 2 bags is cheaper than getting the container.

    Don't forget that stores change planograms (where the items are in the store) as often as twice a month to keep you confused and looking for a certain item that you were SURE was there last week. It makes you walk around the store so you're more likely to buy other items.

  • @justjennb11
    @justjennb11 7 лет назад +101

    Some stores mark prices up to mark them back down so it looks like you are getting a better deal. Also, Walmart's rollbacks aren't really rollbacks. If you'll look at the original price, it's the same thing but they know if it says it's on rollback, you'll buy more of it.
    I also always check the grocery clearance rack first at walmart.

    • @kharlie22
      @kharlie22 7 лет назад +10

      Jennifer Baxter That's like a sign saying 2 for $10 vs just saying $5. People think they are getting a deal, so they run for it.

We also have a "clearance shelf", which products that were already expired were put; mostly canned goods, snacks, and cat and dog food.

    Target's red theme influences impulsive buying, Walmart's blue theme influences a more thought out buying strategy. These themes are designed to match their respective types of clients to at the end get them both to spend more.

      Red is actually considered a HOSTILE color and is NOT conducive to get one to buy, more likely to get one angry! Maybe that's why they have so many fights and arguments in Target. Hmmmmm.
      I've seen some get angry in Wal-Mart, but not as bad as I have in Target.
      If I were Target, I'd change my color scheme to a light green or something more calming than red. Not all targets that you shoot at {or as in their logo} are red, some are multi-colored, some are just two colors. And, yes, there are red ones, and those were the least type bought because of their color!

      Not caring is apparently a new trend in customer service. I met my daughter and her friend for a late dinner at TGI Fri after they got off work last night. We were in the middle of eating and her friend noticed a bug crawling on the seat behind him. The two of them bolted out of the seat, so now theyre standing in the aisle acting rather excitable, trying to figure out where it went, then finding it and identifying it as a small roach. We were the only people in the dining room, yet throughout this entire scene the bartender and two people standing in the kitchen door talking completely ignored us. When we finally got our waitresses attention she acted like it was no big deal. She tried to make some lame excuse about the patio door sometimes being held open too long. My daughters friend then showed her that his knife had something stuck to it about the size of my fingernail. He had failed to mention that earlier. Her response was to roll her eyes and say I hate people. She didnt apologize or offer to bring him another one. Finally, with them still standing in the aisle and making no move to sit back down, she asked if we would like to move. I felt like saying no, wed like to have dinner with the freakin bug; maybe you could find him a little chair and his own plate so we can share with him. Of course we want to move; how stupid are you. But I was restrained and just said I think that would be a good idea. We gathered up our food, my daughter inspecting hers from top to bottom. I really just wanted to leave, but my daughter was giving me that look she gets when shes afraid Im going to make a scene. I thought surely I wouldnt have to say anything, that the girl would know to get a manager. Nope. A few minutes later she reappeared and asked if we wanted anything else. I said I think weve had enough, and she placed the check down and said we could pay when we were ready. To make my daughter and her friend happy, I did not ask for the manager. I gave her a 10% tip because my daughter insisted (she said the girl had been nice about it, and it wasnt her fault) and wrote a detailed note at the bottom of the receipt outlining my complaint and what her response should have been. The girl wasnt rude but she was lackadaisical and didnt even apologize.

    cashless paying systems (credit cards, cheques, smartphone payment apps and so on) yes it's more convenient but not only do you usually pay a transaction fee but you're also more psychologically removed from the fact that you're spending money and thus more likely spend more on impulse purchases - so carry cash and now how much you have on you and what you want to buy - yes you'll annoy the cashier and the people in line behind you but you'll stretch your budget just a little bit further

      Uocjat I've worked in retail for 18 years and the people who pay with good old fashioned cash are the best! It doesn't annoy the cashier at all, it's the idiots who don't have funds in their debt or credit accounts that slows the lines down. But you are right, when you use cash you tend to spend exactly what you want.

    A few more "tricks" I've noticed: "Tie-ins" are items placed (usually in a bin or basket) next to shelved items that go together. Examples: bananas in the cereal aisle, brand name A-1 sauce placed in the meat department, and I laughed when I saw (again, expensive brand name) condoms placed (tied in) with energy drinks hah!
    Edited to add: Meat departments will make shish-kabobs, using bell peppers and other items, charging by total weight as meat only
    Most grocery stores buy product with a certain amount of time to pay for the product. The goal is to sell the product Before the bill is due. The EXCEPTION is beer and wine, which have to be paid for upon receipt. Steep discounts are often offered to grocery stores for large(r) orders. This is why you'll see wines placed everywhere throughout the store.
    Lots of other tips and tricks available...leave a comment if interested; I don't want to write just to write!

    The number 1 of hiding price tags is so true. I used to work for a high end watch store and I remember the managers used to always hassle us to hide the price tag when we put the item back in the case. If anyone forgot or had an impatient client looking to try on the whole store and can't put each tag back, one would get a some sort of punishment for example a cut on commission. I liked the right handed gimmick in grocery stores and that the clearance items are always so chaotic, now I know. Thx for the video

      I'm ambidextrous, which means I can use either my right or left hand, and I go into a store in the direction I FEEL LIKE GOING, not because of smells or anything else.
      I usually go in and head in the direction of the items I'm getting, so I may go left at times, other times I may go right, but that NEVER INFLUENCES on what I spend or what I buy.
      I've actually smelled some pretty bad smells from the Deli, Bakery or other areas where food may be being prepared, if it reeks, I head for the opposite direction immediately.
      Some foods I just can't stand the smell of when being cooked or heated, so I always go the opposite direction if that's going on. LOL

It's greed when there's no limits.It's like going hunting and shooting every single deer in the woods, and saying no one else should bitch because you worked for those deer fair and square. I've worked at several grocery stores and one of the biggest things people dont know is just because an item is featured in our weekly ad, it doesn't mean that item is discounted at all. it may be full regular price. It pays to pay attention to prices as well. People are easily fooled into paying more for an item if you make them think they're getting a good deal. Example, I worked in the bakery of a grocery store where we sold pkg. of donut holes for $2.49 reg. price. We used to put them in our ad at 2 for $5 which increased our sales by 20-40% every time we ran them. Most people had no idea they were paying extra cause they thought they were getting a deal.

    Worked in retail stores, grocery stores and toy stores before I took my career to electronics, but the funny thing about the shopping carts is this, the cart corral is usually either just outside the store or just inside next to the doors, but most often the wipes are further inside the store a good distance from the shopping carts, so you still have to grab that nasty shopping cart handle and make your way to the wipes to clean the handle. A little late for that now don't you think?
    There are a few stores that actually have them right night to the cart corral, but most I've been to, they're usually inside the store, and a little walk to get one, then come back to get that shopping cart! And some stores still don't offer them at all.
    You're better off to keep those sanitary wipes on you and use you own wipe to clean the cart handle!
    As for the fun house mirrors, never seen one in the stores I've shopped in, not once. They have always had a standard mirror, if you doubt the mirror in the store, take a small one with you{pocket mirror}, and then compare your image in the one you have against the stores.
    And if the store mirror really distorts things, call the home office and even possibly code enforcement in your area and register a complaint.
    If those mirrors are found to do what this video claims, they'll get fined and have to replace them with regular conventional mirrors. As that is called a DECEPTIVE PRACTICE and it is ILLEGAL!

    I knew about the jewelry store trick because I used to work in one. A lot of times, if you can see behind the item and they haven't taken the time to tuck it into a crevice in the display or turn it upside down, you can read the price anyway. However, for higher priced items that cost thousands, no amount of tag hiding is going to prevent sticker shock when people finally find out how much it costs.

    Make a list first before you go. Stores, especially Walmart, HATE that. Even if you don't stick to the list that's ok b/c there will always be that certain item that will be sold out and you have to substitute it with something else or you just can't locate it if it's not an item you don't buy regularly. At least you will have a list that can kind of keep you on track so you know what your budget is and you won't over spend too much.
    Look at the weight of the item. retail stores try to sell you on pretty "NEW" packaging and branding, I see it all the time. Pay attention to the weight because you will notice that over time the weight will drop by volume through new packages of stuff you are used to buying you just don't realize that they are changing the package because they don't want you to notice the weight change. It is not as noticeable as price increases.

    Grocery stores should not be allowed to sell shelf space (with the below exception...), especially to the Nth variation of a brand name (like Oreos®, for example...) that already has two (or more) variations on it. (Quaker Life, for another example...) Instead, a product should be able to buy shelf space only during the first six months of its existence - and if it fails during that time, let it die!
    Note that the dairy, meat, and produce sections are ALWAYS on the outside of the store, dairy usually in the back of the store (where you gotta walk past at least one aisle of other stuff to reach it!
    Also, groceries (although other store types are also starting to do this...) move stuff around on a regular basis, so that you have to go looking for (for instance...) the canned meat (SPAM, anyone?) section.

    The prices on jewelry is marked up at least 1000%! Yeah, you read it right.
    I purchased a sterling silver bracelet w/ some 20 1/8 carat diamond chips for $450. That was the sale price from $600. Deciding, too late, I didn't care for it as much as I thought, and since it couldn't be returned (their policy), I tried to sell it.
    When I was told the silver was worth $15, and maybe $5 for the diamonds, I almost fainted. The person at the gold resale shop then gave me the ins and outs of jewelry shopping. Unless you have money to burn, don't ever buy jewelry from a store. Even the internet has a big markup!
    I've now decided good fashion jewelry is the way to go! Unless their carrying a jewelers loop, no one will know fake from real! We bought a 3 stone diamonque platinum over sterling wedding ring on QVC for $65. In 5 years no one has thought it was fake! I constantly get compliments on it! So, buyer, beware!

      the price on a regular diamonds artificially set anyways they are not rare at all. you have very few companies to buy up the entire Supply and thrown into safes to keep the price High

      It is mostly diamonds that are marked up out of whack. That piece of silver or gold jewelry cost more than the materials is because all design and craftsmanship costs.

      Same, I just go for quality fakes. Got my bridal set for $45 at the piercing pagoda kiosk at the mall. No one can tell it's fake, it's not plated so the color doesn't wear off, and it doesn't turn my finger green.

    One reason you are directed to the right is to insure you go up and down each aisle ending with you in the back of the store. One more way of getting you to buy more. Also 2 for 1.00 suggest you buy 2 and in Walgreens you best buy 2 or leave it alone ,if you buy 1 price is higher by as much as 40%

      That's a common trick on everything today. I buy the 2/$1.00 bags of Flamin' Hot Cheeto's, but if they only have one bag left and you want it, you have to pay the single price on the bag, which is .59¢. I've argued with cashiers about this many times as well as management, you only have 1 bag left, there is no way to buy 2, so you should be FAIR and sell this single bag at .50¢. But they WILL NOT DO IT! You have to pay what the manufacturer has imprinted on the bag no matter what.
      Give me the old days when something sold 2/$1.00, then you only paid .50¢ for each item and THAT IS the way it SHOULD BE!
      Sadly it's NOT the stores doing this, but the manufacture of the products themselves that started this garbage. The stores DO NOT IMPRINT the prices on the product itself, it comes directly from the manufacturer like that today.
      Is it fair or right, too me, no. But as they say, you can't fight city hall.

    I know stores like to shuffle their stuff around in the stores. They do it so you have to go looking around for the item you wanted (instead of remembering where it is and being able to go right to it) and hopefully buy more stuff while you're searching. It's been proven that you're more likely to buy something if you're in "search" mode instead of tunnel vision.

      Applesarerubbish stores that move items around, and actually think it is going to make people buy more, all need to know NOW all it does it PISS your customers OFF so they get fed up, stop coming in and go to new store. When you are looking for an item you want that, and seeing other crap changes nothing. And if the item is not exactly where it used to be I ask, and if it gets to be a hassle I walk out, and find a place that hasnt moved shit

    I was looking for a new set of sauce pans and decided to go to Asda. As I was looking at the sets they had on display, I saw on the bottom shelf at the back a set. They were very nice but the price was unbelieveable! Instead of £50 or better, they were £8 pounds for 3!! There were only 2 sets so I bought one. It was just a matter of looking at ALL the shelves.

      Most stores are doing that. Bags are expensive to provide, although companies will tell you it's to promote environment health by encouraging customers to bring their own bags. I can say it worked for me, I almost always remember to bring my own bags or to say I don;t need one when it;s something I can just carry out, like a book from a bookstore.

    Stores often move products around to different aisles or locations within the aisle. Sometimes this is to account for old products being removed and new ones added in, but completely relocating a product forced you to try to find it, often looking at dozens of other products while you look, hoping you'll see something enticing and spend extra money.

And the real funny part of this, there was a bar around my area for a while, but ended up changing it's name because of the Mickey D's name associated to McDonald's, yes, you guessed it, the bar was named "Mickey D's"! Food for thought..next time your local grocery store has a huge sale..say green giant veggies are 2 for a 1.00 you may notice that there is a limited quanity to buy before that sale is effective..yes..you can mix and match some items but ultimately if you go with the store brand or another similar product you will save more than the sale items..most of us do not use 10 bottles of mustard in one month..so having more of one item creates storage issues at home..as well encourage "stock up" shopping in one trip..check week to week and you will notice that about half of the list of buy 5 or more to save is really much lower in the weeks following the sale! Hope this helps!!

    @spookym123 7 лет назад

    Wow, I've worked in retail for over 35 years, and I've never even heard of, or put in use, most of these "secrets". The clearance rack is a mess because it's usually older product that hasn't sold and the packaging is worn. It's messy because it's an afterthought when it comes to the priority, which is keeping the current product neat and organized. If the owner of the store comes in and sees a messy clearance display, we're told to, "clean it up and organize it". Those first two things about apples are more related to the source, not the retailer. And cosmetically perfect produce is a _consumer_ demand. We also try to promote smaller, local companies. I've heard some wild, derogatory claims like these about pricing, marketing, signs, etc. from customers. After the customer walks away, the employees will look at each other and laugh, "Like we have the luxury of time to do all those things!"
