- Aristolochia is an important plant in the wild, because it serves as the host plant for the swallowtail butterfly. Indoors it does no such thing, but giving it a lot of bright light, however, can make it quite a prolific grower, though I don't think it's typically considered an indoor plant. It steals the stage here as #311 in "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.

Beautiful plant, you always seem to have the most unusual plants that most of us will not be able to get, we just enjoy them through you or others that are growing them. Thanks again Summer and I will see you tomorrow.
This plant reminds me of Aristilochia macrophylla and Aristilochia tomentosa which are outdoor perennials down south. When they bloom in summer they are covered in swallowtail butterflies. The flowers on any of these plants are fantastic!
I like how you experiment with all kinds of plants!
I like the white veining...very nice 👍🏼
The leaves are beautiful.
Really beautiful
This is more of a Conservatory or greenhouse plant. It really needs those good conditions and room to shine and display it’s unusual blooms. That said, yours is doing pretty well, considering.
Me encanta saludos desde Costa Rica donde la planta crece de manera natural...and of course I ve got one of those love that family of plants
I came across images of the flowers of this plant online and came upon this video looking it up. Does anyone know what the flowers smell like? A few source mention it has a strong fragrance but none say it's a nice smell, which leads me to wonder if it has a rotten smell to attract flies like some other members of this genus.
Another interesting aspect of this plant is that it's cauliforous, meaning it blooms on nodes along mature woody stems, which also have an interesting deeply fissured bark. I think this might only bloom if you can get it to the point of having older woody branches. I want to grow this outdoors in Costa Rica so I shouldn't have much trouble with giving it room to develop.
They are really beautiful although pest love them too ... also a lot of Aristolochias are really poisonous:)
*indeed! The swallowtail larvae feed on the leaves to be less palatable to predators*
Where did you get yours!!!! 😭
Has this ever bloomed for you?
Aren’t you aware that this is deadly poisonous?
Not interesting
