You can make a bricklink wishlist for a particular set which makes it a lot easier to track what you have. You can check off what you have and even generate an automatic order for all the parts. Bricklink has the set inventories too as well..
The thing when you bricklink older sets is how much do you want to stick with the original pieces. A lot of the pieces are now slightly different, (arches, modified 1x1s, hinges etc) and if you want to buy the older ones it's more expensive and it kinda limits your options, as not a lot of sellers have them. You can make it cheaper but it requires the hassle of checking what parts have newer molds. It's not easy, but in the end you have an older set in your city. One more thing, I don't know about rebrickable part lists, but Bricklink's part lists are pretty accurate!
You would have been the coolest dad! I would go crazy as a kid with a Lego city like that as a child. Although as a kid I was drawn to space and castle legos. and boy did I create a lot of custom space ships and castles...then later pirates. I was never afraid of scraping my castles or ships to build new ones often liking my own builds much more than the lego official designs. Nowadays, it seems a bit harder for Lego builders to do MOC's becaue the original sets look so good. I love how you guys include buildings that are MOC'ed versions of the original sets. Adds life to the city.
Might wanna consider combining Lego's PaB/B&P services along with BL when building older sets, especially if you live in a nation without a lot of well-stocked stores. While generally more expensive you're guaranteed new pieces and you might recoup the cost on saved shipping (generally the most expensive part of BL orders). Enjoyed the video, now a wanna see you tackle Cafe Corner
My first ever modular building loved the build and it got ne started on collecting them all. Have also gone down the rebrickabke route and built alt builds of modualrs.
my original fire station is badly stained from the rear. Its from sunlight. Where the light went through the rear windows it also stained some things on the 2 floor (like the fridge and couch) but on like a 45 degree angle. I left my on display with 2 other modulars (grand emporium+pet shop) with the rear facing a window. They all dicoloured from the rear.
@@jkbuilders2000 I guess. I dunno if I could afford modular sets I think I'd want to customize them a bit for my city. Not a problem I think I'll ever have to worry about though
We virtually did the same thing. We used a ton of bricks from our own collection. But we did put in an order via Bricklink and LEGO. Like you, we found that the inventory on Bricklink and Brickset aren’t accurate. We ended up with a few bricks short. Thankfully we managed to cover these from breaking down another set that was due to go into storage. Luckily we had an opportunity to pick up the Minifigures from a local toy fair and from a store that specialises in secondhand LEGO. Apart from a couple of pricey items, I think our total cost was about $180 USD. The modular town hall is next!
Hey all Good video I just did this with the same set, with parts in my collection was about $200. I ordered most of the common parts from pick a brick online. Also did this with Town hall and the detectives office
You should have started with bricklink's inventory, instead of rebrickable, I'm sure you wouldn't have wrong pieces. Using the Easy buy option isn't always the best option because bricklink will always automatically select stores with the cheapest prices so you will have some of the worst used pieces so unless you buy them all new it's not the best option but for old sets with retired pieces, getting them all in new condition can be more expensive than buying the set whole. Parting out a set can be more affordable than buying a set whole and you can get good results but it is a lot of work, you cant do everyhting automatically. (for the oldest sets anyway)
I get wanting to get what you paid for, but I don't see much of an issue with a modular having various shades of gray. Real stone/bricks aren't all identical
I am actually doing the same. but to try save money i'm also looking through all of my LEGO and parts i have that are used in the set, i put into a Ziplock bag. I will say even if you buy the parts without a box or instructions or minifigures, you will still be able to make your money back. I do like the tree and the American flag, while today they look kinda bad and cheap. back in 2009 they would have been nice for a city. The Fire Brigade will also be my first tome buying the parts from a website like Bricklink.
It's still not bad where i live 600 + usd equivalent our money to buy even a loose fire brigade building only with missing parts... but you need to be better with what you have/need if i would do the sma with bionicle which i collect and they are fucking expensive now i would go bankrupt jsut buying things that are broken or i already have...
Cool Set! I was wondering -since you didnt mention this- how much of the bricklink cost was shipping? Because i think you needed to order from a bunch of different sellers to get all the pieces and shipping might add up alot. Also, does the set has some special printed pieces unique to it, like most of the other modulars? Thinking of parting together the brigade as well..
The shipping was included in the cost I mentioned but the original order was through 4 different places and it was about $5 per, so $20. The other order I had to do was through 3 places for about the a $5 per average as well so another $15. If I remember right the most expensive pieces were the garage door slats and the big doors on the back.

Ya i've been learning the ropes the hard way, starting to get the hang of it though.
@JK Builders I only recently learned about that by watching another lego channel..

Ya I'm sure a lot of the pieces I got that are discolored are from sunlight as well. Bummer.
You can always like change the aspects you don't like, like the tree and the flag
Very true. For the most part I like to keep things the way Lego intended even if i’m not crazy about them.

Ya it would really help the process if you have a large surplus of spare parts. Thats something we're working on.

Good video

Not bad, I wish I had a more extensive parts collection for stuff like this.
Listen to the kid! 😂 He’s pretty smart!
💯
Do you guys prefer prequels or OT? Lego has been making some pretty nice sets of both trilogies recently.
We are big fans of both really

Ya it’s been a learning process for sure, thanks for the info
keep doing it keep putting any sets together from parts and we got a full time subscribe
We appreciate that!
You can order new condition parts from bricklink for most bricks.
True, just more expensive but most likely worth it
I get wanting to get what you paid for, but I don't see much of an issue with a modular having various shades of gray. Real stone/bricks aren't all identical
That’s true, I just hate getting gross pieces when I order stuff from Bricklink
Try peroxide and an old toothbrush to clean the bricks
Totally works! I “bleached” my old white LEGO bricks from the 70s that were very yellow!! Just left them in a peroxide bath for 48 hrs! Easy!
definitely going to try it!
@@jkbuilders2000 also use blue light it will makes the process faster and lasts longer...

Good luck, hope it goes better for you than it went for us 😂
I wasn't expecting this. I am going to stop suggesting people to do the same on my vids without warning about some of the issues
0:57 lol
🤣 🤦🏻
@@jkbuilders2000 You guys are like a comic team. Love the videos! I just got this set used, but in pristine condition with box/instructions for $260
That’s an amazing deal, good for you! 👍

It was worth it for the education.

Idea you should do the same thing for this you should get the Simpson house
You know we’ve thought about that. Maybe some day soon 😉
Order your parts from the massive German stores and thank me later. [I just order 41,000 bricks and tiles from the Magic Magnus store]
Definitely have to look into that
