Vaos this really is the best design for a vtol ssto I’ve ever seen. I love how genuinely useful it is for ferrying kerbals and supplies from orbit to surface.
I once tried to make a ducted fan tilt rotor using those rotation servos, but the fans kept bending too much and then eventually snapping off. Maybe I should try again using hinges, since it looks like your method produced a sturdy (and beautiful) craft.
I have a VTOL that uses servos and have a similar problem with bending, but I managed to circumvent most of it by strapping the left and right servos together with struts going through the main body. It managed to stabilize well, but I still have some bending and occasional vibration at 4x. I will definitely try the hinges method to improve it.
Sweet! Mothership especially. I like the partial rings for centrifugal gravity; it's a good way of keeping down both part count and mass, the latter of which would matter IRL too. Hey VAOS, would you be up for landing a VTOL at a specific site on Kerbin? It would be pretty cool if one were to land on a launchpad, especially at the Inland Kerbal Space Center, AKA Baikerbanur. I like to clip the Mk1 inline cockpit into a Mk1-Mk2 adapter and then leave some of the propellant out of the adapter. However, in a little shuttlecraft like this, I guess you might want all the propellant tanks for balance.
Great designs Vaos! Very cool! If you have time to do tutorials again, would you be interested one on using the mechanical parts like the hinges for your VTOL thrusters? I've had some luck with them for basic applications, but trying to use them to create my own VTOLs ended...badly 😅
The quality as always 🤯🤩... Is wonderful! Oh btw @VAOS when will you do some sorta of Soviet SSTO!? Would love to see something done with your design but all bit more sovietic 🔥
Oh man after seeing N9's cinematic for the true volumetric clouds, the current clouds look so bland, also amazing crafts! Way better than anything I've tried to build.
how do you keep the motors from flapping/how do you get them to lock in position? whenever i try to lock or depower them it says it can't lock while they're moving, etc.
Nice! Back in the day, didn't they call shuttles that could de-orbit, land, take off, re-orbit and rendezvous "certified"? I seem to recall something about that. Like I said, Nice!
Hello, I have a question! I tried to build this type of engine at 5:46 using your walkthrough. I spent around 4 hours trying to get the hinge to work properly. It’s using the same concept with the rapier on the hinge. My problem was trying to figure out the setup for action groups. It’s a cargo ssto that I want to carry a rover to mun inside tne cargo bay. I wanted this to have the VTOL capability, and open up the rear cargo ramp door, drive the car out and then return to Kerbin. Since it’s larger, I attempted a design that essentially combines two of these swivel mechanism engines into a single fuel tank (using that Mk2 fuel tank that breaks into two). I have 1 of these subassemblies on either side for a total of 4 rapiers. Question is, how do I set my action groups up? Specifically since there’s 4 of these engines I need them to all work in unison when switching from normal to VTOL.
The way I have it is: 1 toggle engine 2 toggle engine mode 3 toggle hinge I don’t worry about a lock, because a large hinge that only has to deal with one rapier is strong enough to hold its place with rigid attachments on. make sure the hinge moves slowly enough for the craft to be able to adjust for the change. You’ll definitely need strong reaction wheels. (If you don’t know what rigid attachments are, you can activate them by going into settings, and clicking on advanced tweakables. ) hope this helps . 😎
@@vaos3712 thank you! Turns out my issue was both the fact that my hinges were locked to heaviest part and I had my action groups in the wrong order. This helped a lot, I was able to get my Mk3 cargo plane to the mun!
I'm having a really hard time making my VTOL controllable. Centers of mass are all good, I can float, but coming in for a vertical landing, from a flight, is worse than dicey. RCS helps, but getting that main throttle right, where TWR is 1, and it doesn't bounce and flip on it's back when touching down is currently beyond me.
That would be great! Your videos are always great!! I pretty much only build SSTOs, most of which turn into aircraft to explore Kerbin with. Only been to Mun like 6 times
can the vtol actually reach orbit from kerbin with the amount of fuel on board? Like I don't have any reason to doubt it it just looks so small and I'm so bad at SSTOs that it seems almost impossible, in any case, it's dope asf and it looks absolutely amazing
@@vaos3712 great, I commented before seeing the part where you talk, I won't lie but I still found it hard to believe, the technique with the cargo bay housing all the actually important bits is really cool and I was actually looking for smth like it for space stations so thank you sm
I copy you exactly 1 to 1 but my hinges don't work, one moves and one doesn't. Symmetry is ok. I can put them separately without symmetry but then the engines have different thrust... it's really disheartening cause i like vtol ssto 😢
@@vaos3712 thanks for the reply. Turns out I was connecting actuator outside the service bay instead of inside. Problem located 12 inches from monitor, and resolved.
That mother ship is an absolute beauty! I really like the gravity ring and garage bay door designs. Keep it up!!
I saw it and got reminded by B5 right away, with its Earth Force ships having similar features.
My name is Hugo too! Even our surnames start with L
Another beautiful and sleek design from the mind of VAOS!

I love the design of the mothership especially the hangar doors, really nice job!
6:43 looks AMAZING!
I love this concept, you're so good at combining aesthetics and functionality. So cool!
give us more aircraft only please 😭😭🙏🙏🙏🙏
I love what you did with the cargo bays by putting them side by side!
Reminds me of the old school SSTO certification missions we all use to run pre-1.0. Orbit to Ground to Orbit - no refueling. Love it man
While watching I was constantly thinking that this is ksp1
I can't imagine what will be possible in ksp2
This channel never got the recognition it deserved imo

That star trek ship looks cool, can't wait to see it.
I can’t wait for what we will be able to build in KSP 2. Gonna be EPIC!
We can build really cool Krakens
very impressive, I'm still learning how to design working ssto spaceplanes

Been popping in to check on your stuff throughout the years since discovering you through Solar Nations - can't wait to see what you do with KSP 2!
Nothing short of amazing! Great work and you earned it.

"Soviet-punk" an SSTO?
"Comrade punk"?
hmm 🤔
Oh yes the Starflee-eeerrm, ahem SPACE FORCE logo looks good on the ships! Love it. The shuttle is awesome, makes me want to play KSP again.
The description was the thing that had me, that's hilarious.
Oh that cinematography 🤩

everything u do is just so cool
You should look at a mod called rasterprop monitors, i think there might be a way to integrate cameras in it.
great design!
Banger
WOW THAT STAR TREK LIKE SHIP IS VERY COOL
and really look like one I did some time ago lmao
Very neat
It doesn't need to be cameras and stuff for they see outside VAOS. I remember Mercury spacecraft managed that by the (clever) use of periscopes.

Holy Schmidt he actually did it…
FYI the new update is fine with mods. i have lik 30 sum mods running no problems with any of them.
SWEET
Nice
it would be cool to see that on laythe
Very nice. Alien kerbals came to kerbin to take samples of kerbins ground and flew away

Hey vaos im wondering if you could make an SSRT with the main booster stage being SRB’s
maybe 😎

🤨 Did the Primary Buffer Panel just fall off my _gorram ship???_
Thatis a awesome shuttle
WHat's makes the hot air effect?
waterfall mod 😎
It took this long for people to use this idea for a SSTO? All my craft including my massive cargo ships have VTOL capabilities 😭
put them in a video I would love to see it! 😎

New viewer here, this is acctually so fucking cool. Just one question what does the red ball at 4:57 indicate??
Its a mod called RCS build aid. The red ball identifies where the CoM will be when the craft is out of fuel.

Cannot reproduce --- engine collides with servicebay preventing pivot to VTOL configuration.
you might have part collision on. check to make sure. 👍
