The Olympics will be interesting. The difference between teams like Australia/Spain/Serbia and the US is that overseas players are developed from a young age to play a role in their club's senior team and a lot of them are used to being bench, then gradually getting a role in the team and some becoming stars. Whereas in the US players are mostly developed as individuals so they can get college scholarships/go pro. This US team is made up almost entirely of guys who have pretty much been the first or 2nd option their entire lives. I still think they are the favourites, solely because they will have at least 4 of the best 5 players on the court at all times. But if they lose, it will be because of their style of play and inability to play actual team basketball.

This is true and it shows you as well how under appreciated is Steph Curry and how he is very under sold in today’s NBA by fans and media. What separates Curry from anyone in this team USA including KD is he is not just an iso guy which he can be but he is the best off the ball player in the nba meaning he doesn’t need to iso or dribble the ball to get his buckets. So it’s tough guarding him because he can beat you on the ball and off the ball in many ways yet people be downplaying he isn’t a legend and disrespect him.

To be fair, Sabonis was drafted during the Cold War where tension was high between USA and Russia still.
A man has as much control over where he is born as he does over the colour of his skin.
People didn’t want him to be playing and weren’t going to support him because of where he was born. Not his political ideology or the threat of nuclear war. It wasn’t Gorbachev who was drafted.
To judge someone’s physical ability or their potential or their worthiness of opportunities because they are from another country, even a hostile one, is unfair.
I mean if people started booing an Iranian, Iraqi or Pakistani today I would hope they were rightly called out on their racism.
War doesn’t excuse losing our humanity.
“To be fair” was poor wording; my bad. I was just trying to say it could have been a reason people didn’t like the pick, among other reasons.

Maybe for some, but for others?
I imagine there was a lot of people who had no idea who Sabonis was and since America>World, thought he was an "inferior" player because he didn't grow up and play basketball in the states.
I'm just glad that Sabonis had a nice career. I remember watching him as a lad, and even though he seemed slower and "stiff" at times, not to mention not as "flashy" as well, you could tell he had definite skill.
Waiting on the follow up video Jimmy…
Shoutout to Team U.S.A. for beating France for Gold..
This is simple , the world didn’t catch up in talent . They are playing basketball, not iso ball like we have in the nba now . This reminds me of the heat vs Spurs . Miami had all the talent , Spurs just played better basketball .
The NBA has been moving away from iso ball for 10-15 years now as witnessed by the Suns with Nash, Golden State, the Raptors and now Phoenix and Milwaukee, the Team Game is superior, the Europeans had to remind us of that. BTW, you do realize that before the NBA / ABA merger in the 70s the game was played much more like the nowadays European game? Blacks played a more street ball version of the game which led to the game we have now for the last 45 years or so. The European Team game is much more true to its roots.
You must be a young af if you think the NBA is mostly iso ball now. Now the 90s-early 2000s....that was iso ball. Today's league is heavily focused on 3 point shooting, which requires more passing to get the open shot. Yes, you have teams like the Harden led Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers who relied heavily on iso ball, but even then they were still passing out jacking up a bunch of 3's. Look at the team that dominated last decade, the Golden State Warriors, a beautiful passing team. This olympic team is playing a bunch of iso because they're not used to playing with each other, haven't had much practice time together, and haven't established a hierarchy. Once (maybe I should say IF) they figure out who's the top dog, who's second/third options, and their roles become more defined, they will start crushing the competition again. Probably need to get used to playing tougher defense as well. NBA has gotten soft on that side of the ball.
@@esho758 your making my point . Who dominated in the 90s ? The Bulls they had the triangle. Who dominated the 2000 the lakers and Spurs . They had systems in place . Yes golden state dominated but didn’t start doing so till Steve Kerr came in and made them run his version of the triangle! Those are systems that win . To why James harden never won in Houston and neither has Portland . ISO does not win championships
You have a reading comprehension problem apparently.
The 90s was nothing but iso ball.

He moved to America and developed as an American so his nationality is kind of a grey area, I think he even says he’s American so it kind of invalidates that point…
Not a grey area because he’s Australian but to correlate his skills to being foreign is invalid…
wanna know the crazy thing, we almost got him. when he was like 16yo basketball Australia was willing to hand him the keys to the team rather then have to fight his way into the USA team, but something to do with his dad made him want to hold out to play for USA
EDIT: sorry it wasn't his dad it was coach k who advised him to hold out to play for America.
to be fair it's the total right call. morally he was only born here cause his dad played pro here for a minute. he grew up in America and was raised as a American so while technically he could have played for us it was morally wrong to try and steal him and it would have cheapened our wins.
@@skonk4483 true. I know he played for team USA in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. So he definitely identifies as an American. I guess he is a dual citizen.
I think the reaction to him being drafted had more to do with it being the USSR. Cold War views.

also he's an older dude with many injuries
Although I enjoyed this video, I disagree with one of his arguments. The people weren’t upset their team drafted a foreign player, they were mad that he was from the Soviet Union. That clip was from 1986, 3 years before the Cold War even ended. Ties with the Soviet Union and the United States weren’t great. Anyways, the video was great.
Edit: The Cold War ended in 1991, so the clip was 5 years before the war ended. The Berlin Wall was taken down in 1989.
Exactly. They may have acted a little annoyed if it was from a European country or something but their almost outright disgust was because he was from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. This was 1986 and Rocky 4 came out in 1985, so it kind of shows where societally USA and the Soviet Union were at.

Wonder if it also goes back to the “the league is getting soft” talk. I remember seeing an article about how in the Nigeria and Australia games, US players were looking at refs regarding calls they’d usually get in the NBA
The NBA wants $ so they tired to appeal to the world by changing the rules away from iso ball. It has backfield. The floor is so spread out that everyone is in iso. Help defense takes too long to double team and leaves shooters wide open. Greed has ruined the NBA. It's a jump shooting contest, if Europe actually plays defense I'll watch them instead.
The league is soft right now and the rest of the world is playing ball like it’s the 90’s. The best era for basketball.
They not used to getting slapped on the pinky finger
Considering that Nigeria and Australia have plenty players with nba experience, wouldn't their teams be soft too? Yes, the NBA is soft but I don't think that has anything to do with us losing international games. It's not the NBA vs the World anymore. The Olympics is basically nba players playing against each other representing their home countries.

The rules evolved to match some NBA becoming flexible on the traveling before dribbling, yet we are still having the defensive stance. Coach says "you'll win a game if you don't let the other team score more than 65 points". Meanwhile, in NBA we'd say "you win by outscoring the other team".
