- Add external USB storage to your 4K Firestick by using the Remote ADB Shell app. This video will show you how to increase your system storage & how you can allocate all of your external storage for system storage (for installing apps) or just half of it.
With this method, you can add up to 2TB of external storage to your Fire TV device simply and easily, with no need to install any other apps or input any commands! Use this storage for accessing and sharing files with your Fire TV device.

Thank-you for being so detailed in your descriptions in each step. Letting people know that external storage won't necessarily show up on firestick 6.0 doesn't mean that it isn't recognized.

Hey Tanya. Love the work. I have been trying to expand memory on my 4k fire stick. What all your vids formatted my 128g usb flash drive to fat32. If I look at storage I see it. So turned on the
Debugging/allow download. Got Ip address downloaded adb shell app. Put in address told it to connect and it says it can't connect??? HELP
Now I have know idea why this is happening..i did notice in this video when you connected it asked about allowing USB debugging. I'm not getting this option. Just says can't connect. Is there another place to allow the USB debugging to be turned on?? Not sure if that could be the issue. Any assistance would be awesome. Thanks

Hi there, I've had this set up for a long time and followed your instructions using Sandisk never had an issue until the firestick decided to not work anymore I installed a new firestick 4K and I am having to redo it all ....what a pain. I just wanted say I watch tv and stream all day Sandisk never overheated or the firestick. Thank you for all you do I appreciate your hard work.
Thank you for this! I just finished doing this. I had some problems. My USB I accidentally formated the wrong one. So it wouldn't show up on chromebook anymore. I remembered I had a seagate external storage. Had to find an app that could partition the seagate for chromebook. I got that, partitioned it and was able to format it to FAT32. Everything good now. Thank you!

Hi Terry. Yes, you can use the same items as described in this video. The only difference to your Firestick is that you will be plugging it in to the HDMI port on the Cloner box.

I LOVE the video; carefully followed all instructions for using OTG adapter to add USB drive and increase system storage on FireStick 4k; everything went exactly as shown on video, including use of the "df -h" command in the ADB app to confirm that the new memory/drive is now recognized in the Stick OS. However, the added memory still does not appear in the "Storage" section of the "About" menu in Settings. What does this mean?
Nix on the above question, and thanks again for this GREAT video. After posting, I saw your answer to the same question elsewhere in comments, i.e., the portion allocated to system storage (for me, that was 100% of the new drive) doesn't show up on the native "About/Storage" menu. I've now confirmed the new memory is working, by buying, installing and testing a game that previously exceeded the original system memory and wouldn't install. I added SO much system storage (256GB) this should never be an issue again with this FireStick, and assume I will have to use the ADB app to periodically check available memory on the new drive ... thanks for showing us all how to do THAT, too. One problem I had on the "steps" was that my FireStick menu wasn't showing any "developer options" tab ... I had to pause the video and do a separate Google search to learn how to activate that tab. Once I got there, everything else went "like buttah" ...

Hello Tayna, your Firestick tutorials are the best on RUclips and beat all the others hands down. I've just followed the instructions above as I have a 64gb card attached which I split for a 50/50 partition. My question is, when I check the storage in settings and in Xplore, all I can see is the 5gb internal storage and the USB storage is now only 30gb. Is that showing correctly? I was expecting to see another 30gb as Internal storage or system storage.

Yes. The number entered after mixed will determine the percentage allocated to general storage. For example, sm partition disk:8,0 mixed 20 will give 80% of the USB drive to internal storage and 20% to general storage.

Unfortunately, you cannot run the ADB process with a 2nd Gen Firestick or any Fire TV device running Fire OS 5 as it is running on an older operating system and will not recognise any ADB commands.
You can watch this video to help you to add external storage to your Fire OS 5 device so that you can at least use that storage if you do things like download content from apps for example: ruclips.net/video/LQ7Na-hzeX4/видео.html
If you are looking to upgrade: the 4K Firestick, 3rd Gen Fire TV Stick and the Lite Fire TV Stick are all capable of expanding the storage.

@@FireTVSticks Hello, I have the 4K firestick. I used a 64 gb usb. Followed your instructions as stated. Everything shows up until I go to ES file manager. No apps show up in my download folder. And copy, cut, are not showing up in order to move apps. I formatted my 64 gb usb as your video stated. It showed up but never could move apps to it. I have a 17 gb usb in with the 64 gb. Only the 17 gb is showing in ES files. Still can't copy and past.

Great video, I just wished you mentioned that you can't transfer apps to a different firestick at the beginning. I was hoping to transfer apps from my 4K over to my 4K max...
You can "copy" the apk file from one Firestick to another but it will not keep any data and you will need to manually copy the apk file for each app you want on your new Firestick. In all honesty, it's just as easy to install them again from scratch rather than trying a long-winded copy and paste exercise. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching 😊👍❤️

I started from scratch in the end, everything went fine, but ES explorer wouldn't recognise the new usb stick (SanDisk 32gb 3.0 drive) although it did show up on the firestick. So I reformatted the drive in Fat32 on my laptop, now the drive will not show up on the Firestick! I tried another usb 2.0 stick and that showed up on the Firestick. I'm baffled that this new 3.0 drive worked once on the Firestick and now it doesn't :( although it works fine on my laptop... Keep up the good work, you have a new subscriber.

Can you explain why it will not work with the Amazon ethernet adaptor?
I would prefer ethernet for streaming over wi fi. Any resolution other than getting a usb type ethernet adaptor.

Good show, Tanya! I have an OTG cable with 3 USB ports on it. I'm wondering if I can install 2 flash drives - one for external storage and one for internal storage? Or I wonder what would happen if I made each of them a 50/50 mix - which one would be used internal storage for new apk installs?
Yes, you can add 2 flash drives. One for internal and one for external. As far as I am aware, you cannot mix storage on both as formatting a 2nd storage drive would override the 1st. Thank you for watching 😊👍❤️

Any type of USB storage device can be used. What storage you use is down to you, but there are few things you need to consider when choosing your USB storage.
As Fire TV devices are formatted to FAT32, the maximum size of USB storage that you can use is 2TB, however, Amazon officially recommends using USB drives that are 128GB or smaller.
Amazon also recommends that high speed USB 3.0 drives are used, even though Fire TV Devices have a 2.0 USB port because USB 3.0 drives tend to have faster read/write speeds and will perform better, even when connected to USB 2.0 ports.
You also need to be aware that with this process, your Fire TV device is likely to run slower when launching apps and moving around the menus as files on your USB storage cannot be read as fast as they can be read directly on the internal device storage. Hi Tanya. Like yourself, I prefer the neat/compact adapter and tiny USB stick set up. I’ve been reading reports, however, of the smaller storage devices heating up and becoming defective, over time. I read one report of the SanDisk that you are using (shown in your video) melting. Someone, who left a review on Amazon UK, had to open their laptop and remove bits of broken/melted plastic from the port! The reviews of other brands (Samsung, for example) mention the drives disconnecting every few minutes. I wonder if they get extra hot due to their small size? Many of them appear to become defective and I can’t help but wonder if they are geared up to smaller transfer tasks, rather than heavy use? Have you experienced any overheating issues? I’m late to the Firestick party but find your videos to be the most helpful. Many thanks!
Hi Billy. To be honest, I only have additional storage attached to my 4K Firestick that I use in the office for demonstration purposes so it is not heavily used. I have therefore not noticed any issues.
I will say that I have NEVER heard of a SanDisk overheating to the point of actually melting! That's certainly a new one on me!
If you decide to use (or are already using) a SanDisk, or any attached storage, to help prevent or reduce any possibilities of overheating, I would recommend removing the power supply from the Firestick when not in use.

Your instructions worked perfectly! My issue in doing this at all was that I now have a slow speed connection which prevents me from streaming on the tv. I need to download my videos which takes up a lot of space. I’ve already deleted a lot of my apps to accommodate this before I attempted this method. I found that ES file explorer is not letting me copy and paste to the external storage. I also want to download directly and exclusively to that storage. How is this done? Should I get a different file manager?

@@FireTVSticks I thought that I would expand the room for videos by making all of the thumb drive storage as internal. If I have to go back and split it will I wipe what’s on the external storage now? There’s only a free apps I did to test.
I did go back and reconfigure but now I can’t reinstall the apps I lost on the sd card. It says there’s a conflict with the same name

Hello Tanya your videos are great and they have helped me a lot. I have one problem when trying to add extra storage to my firestick lite I followed your advise step by step but when it comes to making it a 50/50 split it just hangs with nothing happening and I have waited up to 50 minutes. The only thing that I have noticed is that your demonstration when using RSD remote is that on screen yours reads mantis: and mine reads sheldon: will this effect what I am doing.
mantis is the code name given by Amazon to the Fire TV Stick 4K. If you are using a different Fire TV device you'll see another name e.g. sheldon is the code name for the Fire TV Stick Lite.
Here are a few things to check to help discover why you are having an issue:
First, check your IP address to ensure it is correct and hasn’t changed.
Next, check you have input the IP Address correctly.
Try entering the local hostname instead of your IP Address. Enter 127.0.0.1 and try again.
Unplug everything, including your Firestick and power supply. Wait at least 30 seconds, then plug everything back in and try again.
Go into Settings and turn off ADB Debugging. Then, turn it back on and try again.
Check which version of Fire OS is running on your Firestick. You can only use Remote ADB Shell with Fire TV devices running Fire OS 6 and 7. If you’re not sure, refer to firetvsticks.com/how-to-increase-firestick-storage/.

I am experiencing when streaming a movie either with kodi or cinema HD, it constantly goes to pause for maybe a minute or longer. So, in adding storage space 50% mixed will it fix the pausing problem? Thanks again for you input. Excellent tutorial videos.
This could be buffering caused by internet or storage issues. For example, how much storage space do you have left on your Firestick? Does the pausing issue get better if you clear the cache?

Hi Tanya great video becoming a fan of yours. I am a pit of a dinosaur when it comes to all this modern stuff however when on a pension you need to save money and your help is fantastic. Now the question I have a 4k firestick and followed your step by step instructions. When I go in to settings and about then storage on the fire stick I can only see the internal and not the external storage. When looking at explorer app it sees the USB stick and on the fire stick under application I can see the USB symbol however it appears not to have decreased the storage on the firestick. Could you please clarify what I should see on the firestick regarding internal/external storage thanks is it possible to for to send it to me by email? Screen shot would be great

Hi Tanya thanks for your speedy response. Sometimes it is not easy to communicate by email and explain yourself. I personally need to see how it is done. I think I am going wrong when using x plorer moving the apps from the internal fire stick storage to the USB. When going back onto the fire stick to check if I gained extra storage it is not recognized. However when going into fire stick app management the USB symbol is next to the app. So now I am confused as I thought that showing the USB symbol is correct put under storage I have nothing gained please help me.

I followed your suggestion to increase the storage of applications using a flash drive and an OTG cable. I was very please with the results. However, today I had to reset my firestick to factory defaults in order to resolve a problem with update and wifi. Now my question are: Do I have to restart from scratch or can I bypass some steps? Are any of my applications installed on my flash drive that can be re-used or is it hopeless?

Hi. Unfortunately, when you factory reset your device, this will terminate the connection with the USB storage and you will have to start over from scratch sorry. You will more than likely have to format the USB storage to be able to use it again with the Firestick and will therefore loose all data and apps stored on it. Sorry to bring you bad news! Great tutorial!! I had no issues and everything works as you described. After using it for weeks it now is asking me to update my apps. When I accept the request to update the apps it says I'm out of storage and cancels the installation for the updates. I know for certain I have plenty of internal storage both on the Firestick and the USB. I did do the 100% internal storage option and didn't allocate any external storage. Have you encountered this dilemma and do you know of a fix for this situation?

Unfortunately, this is an issue. There are two ways around this.
1. Uninstall the app and then re-install the updated app.
2. Move the app to your internal storage, update the app and move it back to the external storage. If you’re unsure how to do this, refer to the correct guide.

I’m going to ask what may be a silly question, but the UGREEN 4 in 1 USB Hub to Ethernet Adapter you recommend, has a USB 3 connection cable, which obviously doesn’t fit into the Fire Stick. I’ve found an adapter for micro USB to USB C, but not to USB 3. I’m assuming that this would still work, even though the connection speed won’t be as fast?

I'm having a couple of problems with my 2nd gen. 4K Firestick external storage? Maybe you can address these issues. I can't seem to get Xtorrent, or any other torrent client to download directly to the external general storage for streaming. I've used the 50/50 option. Another issue is why do I still receive a low storage warning even though I've increased my system storage with the addition of an external storage? I'm using an OTG and MicroSD setup. I can see the external general storage with X-plore, but the external system storage can't be seen.

1. Have you changed the download storage location with whichever app you use to download the torrent files?
2. Some app data and cache are still stored on the internal storage, which is why you may still see a low storage warning, even after increasing your storage.

I had earlier followed your instructions to add a memory stick moor added storage wgicun worked fine. I swapped out this fire stick to another tv. I executed your procedural steps and got to the x-pore download attempt which did not show up on the added storage but was shown on the manage applications list. I then tried to go to file link to see if I could download anything else but was stymied with a no internet access message. My internet connection is/was active. What codes are necessary to get a download executed?

Is there another video I can reference to start from ground zero to get things back on track. Maybe reset the fire stick with the power off option. My OTG connections are correct. To be honest, I’m completely stumped about what I should do too get it back on track as it was before. I am using OS6 4K fire stick. TIA.. sorry for being bothersome. Yes, you can use ADB Shell commands as shown in the video on the 4K Max to format the USB as mixed storage 👍

Yes, you can have a different mix. After you enter MIXED, the number you enter next will determine how much percentage is allocated to general storage. So if you enter MIXED 70 - this will allocate 30% internal storage and 70% general storage. I hope this helps 😊👍❤️

@@bobwright9424 Unfortunately, if your storage is partitioned to Private, you are no longer able to view the contents. It is inaccessible by any file explorer application which is why you need to use the df -h command to see your storage space.

Hello Tanya, In the xplore app, my external drive appears and I moved a couple of apps from the App Mgr/Installed folder over to it and I can see them there. I then open one at a time in the external drive and it asked if I want to install it which I did but they are installed back into the Apps Mgr/installed folder so when I go into Settings/Applications/Manage Installed Apps and look for the image next to app telling me it was installed to the external drive, there is no icon/image there. I followed your instructions about formatting the drive to FAT32 and also using the partition software due to the size of the drive, then use the Remote ADB Shell to add the drive. I am using Firestick Version 6, my external drive brand is VenderCo and it is partitioned w/1TB for storage, I am using Win. 10 Professional Home Edition and I did not get any error messages during the process.

I have a cord OTG, Firestick 6, and trying to see a 1TB hard drive in XPlore and Kodi. Alas it is not showing up. No error messages. The 1TB is not powered, any ideas and help
Have you formatted the drive to FAT32? If you're having trouble with the 1TB drive, it may be worth trying a smaller drive to see if power is the issue.

I’m getting the same code connection failed.
To my understanding, a recent software update has caused an issue with ADB Debugging, which may also be causing USB storage to stop functioning. It is unclear whether or not this issue will be resolved and when it may occur. I will investigate the matter and provide an update video as soon as more information is available.

Tried everything and couldn't get my Firestick to see the external drive. Put it down to external drive (1Gb) being old and/or needing more power. Returned my OTG. Will purchase the latest firestick which simplifies addition of external drives.

Hi Tanya, I'm not too sure of any of this has changed with the latest updates, but I have done the whole process and it seems to have worked to a point, but they don't show up in the installed apps on the menu, they show up in settings in installed apps with the wee paper clip to show they are installed, but but I can't access them through the main menu, just wondering if I may have done something wrong or if this is a common issue? This can be an issue when you first install the app. However, after a restart of your Firestick, you should be able to see the apps on your apps screen.
When using the AOMEI Partion Assistant to format, is there still the FAT 4GB limit on the file size? If so, any suggestions on how to save large video files to an external storage device?
Instead of saving large files to a storage drive to use attached to your Firestick, you could used networked storage and install VLC player on your Firestick. You'd then be able to play the files over your network any bypass the limitations. Thank you for watching 😊👍❤️

X-plore works better on your internal storage, so please install X-plore before partitioning your storage with ADB Shell.
This is a very informative video but I have a question when I format my flash drive, FAT32 is not available only exFAT or NTFS. Will it still work and if not what is your suggestion?

Uninstall the apps that are installed on your external storage.
Then, remove the USB.
What would be the downside of storing all to the external drive compared to doing the 50/50 mix?
The 50/50 mix allows you to still access a portion of your storage if you wanted to use it for general storage that you can access. Such as downloading files to it.

i followed your instruction with the software install ran the program then inserted my USB drive, a popup came on screen telling me firestick 4k doesn't recognize file system and asked if i wanted it to format to fat32 and did it for me, one problem i am having is when i try to install ADM it keeps poping up failed parsing , any help would be greatly appreciated, by the way you video is brilliant keep up yhe good work💗

In this case, you only need to install ADB Shell if you want to allocate your storage as a mixed partition.
I followed this video to add a 64MB san disk flash drive to my firestick 4K. the firestick formatted the flash drive. I did not partion, but used option 1 to allocated all storage to system storage. I have downloaded x-plore, but it went to internal storage. I watched your video on moving apps from internal to external, but none of the apps show as being on the external drive. I clicked them to move with the check box, and they showed up in downloader folder, but they do not indicate they are on the external drive. suggestions.

Will adding this external storage help with buffering issues if added as native storage?
Not necessarily. Be aware that with this process, your Fire TV device is likely to run slower when launching apps and moving around the menus as files on your USB storage cannot be read as fast as they can be read directly on the internal device storage.
