I learned how to play that song over 50 years ago. I haven’t played a guitar in years but this brings back a lot of memories. Some of the chord forms are different than the ones I used but a lot of it is quite familiar. I met Leo Kottke after a performance he gave at The University of Oregon in 1973 at a sort-of guitar clinic he held. He played almost all of his well-known songs or versions of others’, including “Last Steam Engine Train”. I think the best way this song is performed is on a 12-string. Bravo!
Lovely stuff Antoine. I've just bought a blonde EKO Ranger. They really are good for the money; I've been playing Piedmont style guitar for a while - wanted to get closer to Blind Willie Mctell's sound with the 12 string. Thanks again.
Oh yes, this is a wonderful performance of this classic tune! Great work Antoine, and I appreciate you displaying your fingerwork clearly for us pickers! Will subb today!😊
Thank you Rick ! You'll also see that I play on an electric archtop red guitar, with a sound close to yours when you play your beautiful Gretsch's ! I'm a big fan of Merle Travis music... 🤩🤩🤩
Thank you so much for your kind words @umimuko2 ! Japan is a great country for acoustic guitar music, I've been lucky to play on the same stage as Isato Nakagawa in the early 2000's, he was a fantastic composer and guitar player, I often listen to his wonderful music. 🤩
@@karlkellar8614 I've been playing a long time using only thumb and index, trying to sound like Reverend Gary Davis. Now I can play the high notes with the thumb, the low ones with the index, brush up and down all the strings or just some of them... Playing thumb-index is the better way to make you playing more rich and more clear, on 6 and on 12 strings ! 😊
@@AntoinePayen I've always used a modified classical fingerpicking style, i.e., I don't rest any finger on the soundboard (my right hand floats free above the strings) and I generally use index for G string, middle for B, ring finger for G string (not always). I fear it's too late to change my practice now, but your right hand sounds really good. I've never been able to get that Kottke feel like you do here. My version is closer to Fahey's, for example, instead of going down to 1st position for the A chord, I play it in F shape at fret 5, but with both A string and high E string open. I confess, I like your sound better. I subscribed and will check out your other posts.
I want to play like that when I grow up but I am 76 yrs. Old.
Thank you Jerome ! Don't give up, it's never too late ! 😊
Except that I am 69 - you took the words out of my mouth !
Me too, im 74
Totally unreal 12 string picking .Thank you for posting
Thank you Peter ! I actually played it, in fact. 😂
Good old EKO 12 i used to have one ,bought it new in 73 for 45 quid 😊😊
Thank you Simon, this Eko Ranger XII is a brand new reissue as good as its model from the 60's !
@@AntoinePayen mine cost 45 gb pounds what do they cost today 😊

Nice!
Thank you ! 😊
Sick
Sounds good but more like Leo then Fahey with the 12 string.
This is a great version. Jealous. The 12 string really sounds good on this one.
I really like the way you use your right index finger to throw in all those fill notes.
Thank you so much Karl, I do appreciate your kind comments ! 😊

That tune is fun to play on a 12 string.
Hi Henry would you be able to demo how Michael played Rabbit Hills?

What kind of guitar is that?
It's a Eko Ranger XII Vintage Reissue. www.ekoguitars.it/en/acousticguitars/Vintage-Reissue-Series/ranger-xii-vr-honey-burst
