  • The LEGO Technic 42099 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader is a great set and it offers a relatively easy way to change the internal gearing, allowing us to find the balance between speed and climbing abilities.
    Last year I published 2 upgrade options, now I compare them with the original directly to show you what are the differences.

    Hey so I discovered that with Buwizz I have less power cuts than vs. Technic Control. I tested each on the same obstacle course (this exact set 40299) and where Technic Control would cut power earlier or give up on a certain incline, I would power through it instead w the Buwizz app. All the controls were set up accordingly, but for the life of me I can't figure out one thing - how can I have the steering reset to "straight" after a turn. I want the steering to be identical to the Technic app, but w/ Buwizz, steering the 4x4 keeps it turned left or right, and its so hard to control like that without the reactive steering.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  3 года назад +2

      The BuWizz app does not support yet return to center steering, you need to wait for an update from them to have that resolved.

  • @defaultdaniel

    Cool video man, I just got mine today and am enjoying it. Definitely wish there was a little more stock torque and / or the bluetooth motor didn't cut as much power. Now for the real question - say I want to do the opposite and make it faster than stock? I should use an even larger gear on the drivetrain motors?

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  3 года назад

      I don't think there's a point to make this 4x4 faster, even in stock form it can barely climb anything because it is tuned more for speed and not for torque. Theoretically you can swap gears to make it faster, but for that you'll need to make some structural changes since the bigger gears won't fit in the 3 stud wide spaces where they are currently located.

    • @defaultdaniel
      @defaultdaniel 3 года назад

      @@RacingBrick I was thinking about using an old gray technic 24 tooth gear on the motor and the extra small 8 tooth gear on the bottom, but I haven't test fitted yet

  • @KastaRules
    @KastaRules 4 года назад +2

    Is it possible to achieve the speed of the default version and the climbing capabilities of a stage 2 mod at the same time?
    Perhaps with something like an SBrick or BuWizz?
    Using a gearbox would allow to switch between speed and torque but with the double engine configuration it would be really difficult to implement.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  4 года назад +1

      SBrick does not change anything with speed or power, that's just a Bluetooth controller. With BuWizz you can get a higher voltage, but that requires Power Functions motors, and they require a fully redesigned base.

    I changed the gears directly at the motors to 2*16, so it's easy and fast to switch between "super slow" and "slower than original, but faster than 5min upgrade". That's a good mix for me.

    • @Void_s
      @Void_s 3 года назад

      So, there are four possible combinations (in order of speed decreading and torque increasing) :
      1) Original (20:12 + 20:12)
      2) Slower (16:16 + 20:12), which also turns the "5 minutes mod" into a Crawler mode.
      3) "5 minutes mod" (20:12 + 12:20)
      4) Crawler (16:16 + 12:20)

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  2 года назад

      Define "better"... it's a toy for kids, and as such the system does not really need more powerful motors. Plastic is easy to break or bend, even with these motors.

    wow! the 42109 and 42099 sets are really not well engineered... With a proper set of gear, you can climb super steep hills with only one XL motor. So, with 2 XL motors there is someway to make it fast and strong.
