That's such a powerful, heartfelt tribute to Merle Haggard from Vince Gill. So much genuine love and admiration in what he says. Great respect for Vince Gill. I agree with him that Merle Haggard is the tops in country music history. The most great songs in one artist's canon; the voice that is so incredibly soulful and resonant; the way he arranged a song and gathered around him the talent that further lifted and filled out his vision, including Roy Nichols.
That’s about as good as any one could say about Merle ! Thank you Vince ! The thing that is great about Merle is that when you put his albums on you can listen to the whole album not just 2 or 3 songs. They are all genuine!
Tell them Vince. And tell Nashville to wake up and honor him like he should be honored. Merle was far and away the best Country music artist that ever lived.
I started listening to Merle in 1966, and he just kept getting better, and he could sing like other artists and sounded better than they did lol. He’s absolutely the best in country music history. And I performed his songs all over Oklahoma and Texas. Still listening in June 2022. Vince has a song that reminds me of Merle, Go Rest High On A Mountain.
Merle is the TRUE King Of Country!!!!! 38 #1 hits..he wrote over 200 co wrote or wrote himself........ not to mention a hell of a "FRONTMAN" played a mean fender and VOCALLY NEVER DUPLICATED Strait only wrote 11 of his # 1,s. Great guy and is very talented love him grew up on him,,, But ,,, HAG IS THE LEGEND. Thanks you MR Dean Dillon..... and thank you Mr Vince Gill you are awesome!!!
If you were a Merle Haggard fan for LIFE as I was, I also played his music for 30 years in the clubs........then we are "Country to the BONE!" :)RIP Merle
I grew up listening to rock and some country. but merles hay day was a little before my time, but my dad loved merle and I never got to know my dad much because he died when I was young. so as I got older I wanted to learn more about my dad, and at a gas station I seen a cassette of merles greatest hits, so I bought it and was driving a dump truck at the time in Branson missouri and had lots of time to listen to the radio. well I feel in live with merles songs and knew why my dad liked him so much. seems like at least some connection with my dad to me. through the years I have a deep appreciation for merles songs and recognize him as one of the best artist to ever live. RIP and I berry God is having a great concert up there! !!
I love merle haggard music and I really miss him he so much he was the best RIP Vince went to see you in person I have a good friend she loves you and your music everytime you come to San Antonio we go to your concerts we love happy new year I love merle haggard song that you wrote everytime I here the I cry Happy new year to you and your family 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤🙏🙏🙏🙏
Amen Vince. I agree with you. Merle & George were the best. But Vence you are one the great entainers also. I always look forward to your new release. God bless you always.
Maybe the finest thing about Merle was how he respected and indeed honoured his heroes...Jimmie R , Bob Wills ,Lefty F when they were nearly forgotten .His Bob Wills album with the original band members , just before Bob died , was a wonderful and completely honest gesture..never likely to be a commercial success and he knew it .Even learned fiddle to play on it . Respect from an old U.K. freak .We knew some Okies smoked marijuana !
George Strait said that Hag's "Tribute To TheBest Damn Fiddle Player" was the album which triggered his interest in Western Swing and help motivate him towards Country Music.
Merle's passingwas a greater loss to the music world than Prince's.....in terms of long term success and crossover power....yet not NEARLY the media coverage.....thats a true shame! Both are extremely sad stories....but the disparity just gets to me thats all....
Ole Vince looks like they woke him up, out in the gutter hungover, for the interview! If you notice whenever a country star dies Vince is the first to get on TV & fake cry. Worse than a TV preacher!
Would have been true at one point, but he has long stopped that stuff. As for the crying, I used to thin the same way, but have changed my opinion. I think he 's authentic in his respect for his peers.
