    A correction: when ''A Song to Remember'' was made in 1945, it was really no longer ''the beginning'' of color films in America. Three-strip Technicolor had already been around for a decade. This was, however, only the third venture into Technicolor for Columbia Pictures. Columbia was a mini-major back then, specializing in high quality comedies and bread and butter B films which kept the studio profitable while other studios sometimes flirted with debt collectors. Columbia wasn't known for expensive costume dramas, but here, the studio pulled out all the stops. Witness the expensive sets and costumes, the gold-plated pianos and the grand banquet scenes. Columbia even borrowed the reknowned Hungarian composer, Miklos Rozsa, from Alexander Korda to adapt the Chopin score. While it is easy to say the film played fast and loose with some of the facts of Chopin's life, ''A Song to Remember'' was, nevertheless, a feast for the eyes and ears. It was a huge box office success when released and remains, 78 years later, excellent entertainment. Thank you for posting.

      People doubt some accuracy, but i noticed movies like Elvis, Rocketman, or Bohemian Rhapsody have movie like errors too. Anyhow it's a great movie. The scene where Chopin died is for example far from how seriously suffocating he was from his lung disease. Comparable a little bit like with Amadeus a movie about Mozart about which i can only say that Salierie wanted a full investigation into Mozart his passing e.g.

      The film gets many facts wrong and right out reinvented many relationships of Chopin. He went to Paris all on his own, after spending almost a year in Vienna, for example.
      However, Liszt and him were indeed rather good friends for a few years. There is even a jolly, pretty amusing letter that the two of them wrote to another music colleague (Ferdinand Hiller) in Leipzig. They were 22 and 23 years old, were fooling around in the letter, probably tipsy, writing in turns or even finishing the sentence for the other (Liszt corrected Chopins written French and Chopin had to mention it). The content is not terribly significant by itself, it starts as a letter of sympathy (Hillers father had died). But it's a great example of how well Chopin and Liszt got on with each other during the first years of Chopin in Paris. Their relationship cooled off later, however. Being asked why by friends, both blamed their 2 ladies quarrelling. But who knows. There were rumors that Liszt misused Chopins apartment to have some fun with a pretty female pianist, the later wife of Pleyel, in Chopins bed. The rumour had it that Chopin was furious and cut the friendship after. I have never found a primary source to confirm this story, however. But considering Liszts reputation as a womanizer and Chopin a fastidious and decent person, the story could very well be true.
      Liszt wrote the first biography of Chopin after his death, published in 1853.

    This was the film that got me into music seriously at the age of 7 in 1962, Although I was into the modern rock and roll medium, Elvis, Cliff Richard, Marty Wild and Lonnie Donegan, to name a few. Then The Beatles came along, and the rest is history. I love Chopin's music so much.

    This is the movie that changed Liberace's life how he was inspired by so much in the elegance of playing a piano he learned from this movie and became all-time greatest pianist in this century

      @neiljosephbennett9119 6 месяцев назад +3

      Liberace was an excellent pianist, but suggesting that he was the 'all-time greatest' is quite far-fetched! Horowitz, Rubinstein, Cliburn, Richter, Ashkenazy, Michelangeli, Ogden, Cziffra, Gould, Rachmaninov and dozens more - THESE are the truly great pianists of the last century.

    • @mrkitty777
      @mrkitty777  6 месяцев назад +1

      Liberace made his own recompile of the composer piano songs, Liberace played them in his own styles which were very beautiful. The candles scenes surely inspired Liberace his pianos. Liberace probably never had to practice because his performances were Liberace his practicing. Vladimir Horowitz with Rondo Ala Turca kv331 was the first piano song i learned playing Mozart from.

      Dankjewel, Chopin is in mijn mening de beste piano componist die er ooit is geweest. Zou je Chopin - Nocturne in C Sharp Minor (No. 20) from "The Pianist" movie willen luisteren? Het is de laatste piano muziekstuk die ik leerde en kon spelen, daarna moest ik mijn piano weggeven omdat de piano op het werk stond en piano's maken lawaai dus ik had geen keus, ik heb de opkoper niet gezegd dat een piano om de zoveel tijd gestemd moest worden, maar ik zag gelukkig nadat mijn stiefvader was overleden en de locatie werd opgeheven dat de piano in goede handen is gekomen, enkele weken daarna hebben vandalen de hele werk ruimte distributie kantoor alle ruiten ingeslagen, gelukkig zonder brand, dat was in 2010, sindsdien heb ik geen piano meer gespeeld, mijn familie is allemaal weg verdwenen. Ik begin te huilen, mijn familie is allemaal weg.

  • @Seleuce
    @Seleuce 6 месяцев назад +7

    This movie is extremely far from the actual facts of Chopins life, starting with Elsner, Chopins composition teacher, who was never actually in Paris with Frederic. Sand met Chopin on a Party through Liszt, then "stalking" him for almost 2 years. He couldn't stand her and did not want to have her in his life until she wore his resistance out.
    There is a lot of rubbish here, including the actor really looking nothing like Chopin. But it is a very charming film and pleasing to watch. Just don't expect a proper biography, it's mostly fiction with some basic facts in between.

    • @JLFAN2009
      @JLFAN2009 5 месяцев назад +5

      Indeed, it's much sanitized: there is no mention of Sand's children joining them in Mallorca. Their relationship experienced a major downturn after their sojourn there, since his health took a turn for the worse -- and it ended in discord: she wasn't with him at the end. The said end is highly sensationalized and romanticized: Chopin suffered from stage fright and loathed public concerts. He would not have been performing in front of large audiences toward the end of his life, when he was mortally ill with tuberculosis.

      and a pretty cruel depiction of George Sand as well. The look that they gave Liszt was also completely wrong for this period. A lovely and charming movie, but a lot of historic inaccuracies. And yet other little touches, they got so right.. such as a number of Pleyel pianos used throughout and other little touches.

      @@mrkitty777 Indeed. Most movie biogs are highly romanticised and sugar-coated. Strauss in The Great Waltz and The Waltz King, Chopin, Liszt in their's, Amadeus, poor, poor Salieri really copped it here, which is a great pity seeing their were casual friends, and then there are the more contemporary ones like Lisztomania and the other Ken Russell Tchaikovsky, The Music Lovers. The list goes on. But all very enjoyable for what they are.

    I have to say this movie annoys me. It annoys me to see Chopin so detached and indifferent towards his own music. He looks like someone who doesn't care at all about his music, as if it was just an activity like any other.
    He looks like a shallow idiot in this movie. Zero passion. His teacher has the passion that the protagonist is supposed to have, while Chopin has the depth of a secondary character.
    Music in this movie is an empty word, just a decoration, an excuse for a generic story about just apparently about a specific person.
