River Thames Path - Part 1 The Start

  • The Thames Path National Trail is one of the longer National Trails. It is 184 miles long following the river from the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier. It is quite different from the other trails, it is basically flat for it's whole route (well a very gentle slope down hill all the way!) It also passes through some majorly inhabited parts of Southern England, culminating with several miles through the busy capital London.
I am not sure whether I will walk the whole trail. I will take it one day at a time over this year and see how it goes. I am interested to see our second longest and most famous river, to see how it evolves and the life, natural and otherwise, that has made it's character.
The start of my walk was in January, there has been a lot of rain this winter so I checked to make sure the path was not flooded. Despite not finding any current flood warnings my walk was cut short by about two feet of water! So it was not exactly a "flying start".

Really nice filming, and variety. Loved the camera fall haha
Clive, when you say 'as you can see there's no water here...' --- but under that earth is without doubt a watercourse. Rivers move both above and below the ground surface.

Hi, I live near the source of the Thames and the Lower Mill Estate is a holiday village. Hope that helps!

Back in the 90s I attempted to travel the navigable length of the river by passenger boat. Managed about 70% including rowing above Lechlade. I’ve never subsequently walked the ‘gaps’ but you may have inspired me to do so. I now live quite near Kemble. The very uppermost part of the river seems to be a winterbourne, now further reduced by water abstraction seeming to have lowered the water table. Thanks for your videos.

If you base yourself in Swindon, there is a train to Kemble, regular buses to Cricklade and Lechlade, and you can get 2 buses to Newbridge, and a bus service to Oxford.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately I finished walking along the Thames River last year, but a useful comment if anyone looks at this video who is thinking of walking the Thames Path.
      Thanks

We're traveling to England to walk the path...from the printed directions in the guidebook, it looks daunting to find the source....your video is a big help.

Thanks for putting this together Clive. I am going to do the walk all the way but starting from the Thames Barrier. However, I am going to start in September 2022, so hopefully will not find the floods that you experienced. Should take me nine days, average about 20/22 per day. I am already used to walking that distance plus all hotels booked. Hop to meet like minded people en route. One question, on what device did you record the walk on please, as that would be nice to do.

Hi Dennis. I used my phone which is a Samsung A51, I partly chose the phone because it has a good camera.
I hope you have a great walk in September and create some great memories.

      @@clivestrudwick Hi Clive,
Does the process of creating each video for each leg take very long to record, or do you just see something interesting and press the record button on your phone.
I imagine it would take a considerable amount of time which will make the walk even longer in time not miles walked. Plus also the phone running out of charge before the end of the walk. Having never videoed anything with my phone these are questions I do not have answers to.

@@dennispearce1523 Hi Dennis, I try to capture the nature of each walk that I do in my videos. It is certainly impractical to video the whole walk and I think trying to do that would spoil the pleasure of the walk itself. I video things that I think might be of interest or that describe what the walk is like. I also try to create a story of the walk itself hoping I take the viewer along with me and inspire them to want to walk that path. So I might do a short clip about what is happening to me or how I am feeling along the way.
Usually a full charge on my phone is enough for one days walking but I do have a portable battery charger with me which I always have to use if I am walking over several days.
Hope that helps, I guess the important thing is that it is your story along your walk.
      Have a great walk
      Clive

@@clivestrudwick Hi again Clive. Thanks for a quick reply. It answers my questions. I think I will do some trial videos to see if I can match yours, then I will try to work out how you post on RUclips. Thanks again. Good luck with your future walks.
