just stumbled across this series. watching all the way from Missouri USA. Im a s. london native. all four of my grandparents grew up & lived in london and moved southward after the war. my great grandfather was a lighterman on the thames around turn of century. thank you so much for these uploads. looking forward to digging in :)
Thank you so much for positing this, Derek “Spearo” Ling was my grandad, I can’t tell you how much this video meant to me. It was a hidden gem, thank you so very much. Fascinating watch, and something I will show my mum and treasure it together.
You're not the first person to have found a relative in my uploads, which makes me think I should do a rewatch of this series to list the names of the contributors.
I found out about a year ago a major part of my families roots were port of London and there was a Harris amongst the interviews and you guessed it, they were Harrises. A fairly common surname so maybe no connection at all but it was still fantastic to get a look into their world.
I'm a Birkonian with a deep affinity with the River Mersey too, have you read the book on the River Thames by Peter Ackroyd, its free and on audio 🔉 on this platform, best wishes 👍🏼
I must admit to getting rather peed off when I watch these kind of programs about the Thames and the docks, I remember to well the intransigence of the dockwokers to containers and how inevitably they lost everything to ports further down river and to the Dutch, they coul;d have kept all the container trade but were too stupid to move with the times and so lost everything. Shame on them, it wasnt just a job it was a civilisation that was affected by the loss of all that trade and what do we have now, yuppies and their million pound flats
Thanks for posting this series. It is fascinating. I have a question about the production values. The series looks to have been shot on film. The contemporary footage is sometimes contrasty, with bright highlights and shadows on faces. Something that 2021 videographers might try to correct. And the color balance looks biased toward the reds, while deficient in other colors. Skin looks red or brown. Blue skies look faded. The vintage footage looks to have been colorized to sepia. I understand that the series is thirty years old, and there will be some deterioration, but I wonder if you saw this program when it was originally aired. If so, were my observations part of the original art direction, or the effect of time on the original film? Or are they examples of the way that video tape is compromised over the years? A response is appreciated. Thanks for the consideration.
... in a ship in Thames, .... over the sea into Zealand, ... tarried at the Foreland, ... First she told about Englishman then she highlighted about Frenchmen language. I am out today. The billboard is changed. There is a royal mosque there. Lastime it was a Somalee old Muslim woman's face and some 'alive' female/kids local faces of my kind. I do not see well. A chinese non-Muslim face? A man with singlet showing strong muscles. Dizzy. What a world. Old book. No ISBN. Copyright, 1951, by Harold Whitehall. 1st published in 1958.
Very pleased to hear about sailing into West India Dock. That's a great memory. Thankyou for presenting this

Thanks for the upload here and there is an audio book by Peter Ackroyd about the River Thames and its on this platform if you move hasty. 👍🏼 📚
Fascinating to see the Thames and surrounds before Docklands/Canary Wharf area was built!
Before they was redeveloped, yes
Excellent loved it.
The one thing these episodes are missing are the old Thames Television ident to start the show, especially as it was shown on ITV 😂
When I was a kid we would play alday down the river it was alive and then the containers took over and killed the river very sad
Thank you so much, this was wonderful.
I have watched a RUclips of Policing on the River Thames.
The History.
As he tells us its now a dead river unlike the good old days, then in to screen comes a massive ship
To use an apt metaphor it's a case of the rivers usage ebbing and flowing my mate 💯 👍🏼

The first record of a human turd floating down the River Thames was in 11347 BC by Druid Chief Oaken Longstanks.

At around 9 minutes, I had to stop watching. I know that old man is speaking English, but my ears aren't understanding.
