I owned the Alice In Chains Dirt album for years but only recently discovered myself via the video, that Rooster was about Jerry's father...maybe you should watch the official video for "Would" Nikki, it would still be an honest first look at it because it does differ from the unplugged version, but "Love Hate Love" live at the Moore shows just how much of a powerhouse Layne Staley is on the mic
written by Jerry Cantrell, about vietnam, in the military his fathers nickname was the Rooster, also, in vietnam they didn't know what an eagle was, the american emblem so they referred to the american soldiers as roosters.
This is a very deeply emotional song. Jerry Cantrell's the bass player for Alice in Chains father was in the Vietnam War. Rooster was Jerry's fathers nickname. You can see the what the war did to Rooster at the beginning of the video by looking into his eyes. Great song but the truth behind the song is very very sad. Great job covering it thanks! ❤
Yes this did get played a lot back in the day when we listened to local radio stations all the time.Yes kind of intense, good deep video for sure.Yes its frustrating when they block reviews.I know you try and show them, thanks for the great reactions keep them coming Nikki!!
Thank you for watching! Yeah, some bands I learn fast that they're always gonna get blocked but then sometimes it surprises me and lets me post it. I appreciate you guys being understanding about that! 💛
Those raised by vets in the 70's, 80's, 90's.... Our parents killed... Didn't know why... Vietnam... Tried to help us Understand that this may come any time... Generation X
Jerry Cantrell, guitarist of Alice in Chains, wrote 'Rooster' based on what he read about Vietnam soldiers' experiences because his dad Jerry Cantrell Sr. (the 'Rooster') would not talk about it and struggled w/ PTSD ("Shell shock" back then) which broke up his family... Jerry Cantrell said that his mom divorced him and would pass away soon after... Years later, Jerry Cantrell reconnected w/ his dad and made amends... When Jerry Cantrell played the song for his dad, he was told it was 'too close' to what he had experienced... But Jerry Cantrell Sr. agreed to do the music video, sat down for an interview in the clips and showed his countryside home that he lived in.
I graduated in '88, my bro in '91. I had Duran Duran & Depeche Mode, etc. HE got all the cool sh!t. I learned to listen/appreciate this genre (too many bands to mention) because of his and his friends. To this day, I *STILL* rock the fck to it. It's an era that will stick to me. Layne & Chris Cornell - both gone WAY too soon. But this stuff comes up on the radio/Sirius XM... I know I'm gonna get a speeding ticket!
Definitely their most sobering video, and personal song by Jerry. I think sometimes you should see the video, for some songs the video is so impactful and gets the point across better for a new listener. Then sometimes you really just need to watch live. I don't think anybody should make a hard rule about checking out one or the other. Your viewers suggesting it will let you know, I hope!
Hi.. Kind of late to the party, but I believe the combat footage in the video is Charlie Sheen in the movie Platoon. I think you asked who the guy was in the war part of the video. I watched quite a few of these Rooster reactions and I don’t think many people catch the drift of this song, or the meaning behind it. Anyway, thanks for the reaction, catch you on the next one…
“This is a deep song”. Yes. AIC is deep and it hurts most of the time but it’s cathartic you know. Most grunge/rock/metal is about more than f*cking hoes and money. It’s real issues and that’s why “metalheads” are some of the best people out there despite what the public may think. We are about substance and real shit.
hi Nikki, thanks for reviewing Alice in Chains. I bought two albums of them back then. but i would lie if i'd say it sticked with me since then. I just watched a few more videos from your channel since I was flashed by your Chelsea Wolfe-Reaction. Can I add some requests here? well 1.) chelsea wolfe again - "everything turns blue" or "whispers in the echo chamber" (2024) (official videos available) or "16 psyche" (2017) (official video available) 2.) nine inch nails - "into the void" (2000) (official video available) (an untypical song, but you probably know it already. 4,9 mio. views) or: "ahead of ourselves" (2018) live: ruclips.net/video/frMcQmyzUZM/видео.html 3.) pavement! well thats kinda not your genre I guess? "indie" for "slackers"? - but i loved them in the 90s and they are really sweet & smart. the album "crooked rain crooked rain" just turned 30 years old... TODAY! the most successful single was "gold soundz" (the official video played at indie-shows at MTV a lot), my favorite track is "elevate me later" but it has no official video. but "gold soundz"(1994) is nice too. i think everyone can love it although it is very "happy". 4.) sonic youth - youth against fascism (1992) (official video available) the album "dirty" meant a lot to me (but you are already familiar with it too i guess?) 5.) the soft moon - far (2013) (official video available) - sadly the awesome soloartist vasquez passed away this year via fentanyl 6.) EDIT: something weird? roxen - amnesia (2021) (official video available) - an entry from romania for the "eurovision song contest". it failed to make it into the final but it is an interesting mainstream-popsong about dysthymia (depression) and has 3.9 million views 7.) you could also react to the band "liars" no.1 against the rush (2012) (trigger warning: disturbing material: abduction, creepy predator)
Singers like Layne are sorely missed these days
You mean ones who can actually sing without the help of a computer?
💜🖤💯💯💯😎
He's an amazing singer but I have always given him a back seat to this song. Especially with this specificmusic video
Jerry's dad was a Vietnam vet and his nickname was rooster. Yep. Jerry wrote this song to try to get closer with his dad.
And it worked!
Hello Nikki
This is one of the great songs by Alice In Chains.RIP Layne🙏🙏

The older man is Jerry Cantrell's dad, the song is about Jerry's Dad's time in Vietnam and his stories
written by Jerry Cantrell, about vietnam, in the military his fathers nickname was the Rooster, also, in vietnam they didn't know what an eagle was, the american emblem so they referred to the american soldiers as roosters.

Guitar player
Best bass player ever using a guitar! It's truly remarkable. And this comment is void off the top darlin.
For Next check Alice in Chains - Love, Hate, Love live ❤

It's good to watch the original videos of songs, because it gives you the same first time experience as us older folks had when WE first heard them!
❤

AIC Love, Hate, Love live is an amazing performance, really shows Layne's range and emotion
Love this band...especially this song...we would all ❤️ love to react to more bands
Might be the best song of the 90's
Whenever I watch this video, I tear up. I feel so bad for Jerry's dad and everyone in wars. It really was his dad in the video
I graduated in '88, my bro in '91. I had Duran Duran & Depeche Mode, etc. HE got all the cool sh!t. Rooster is about Jerry’s dad
Yes, the guy at the beginning is Jerry Cantrell's dad
The black and white at the beginning and throughout, are Jerry Cantrell and his dad, what the song is about.
Definitely their most sobering video, and personal song by Jerry.

Check out Alice in Chains - Love Hate Love(Live at the Moore) It's Layne at his peak before the drugs took over.
Totally agree!
Absolute masterpiece!!!
Thank you, I will add it to my list!
I know a lot of veterans, and am close to them all. Because that's not easy to do and being in the military is all I ever wanted to do.
Gonna tag on the others & recommend Live at the Moore. Love, Hate, Love. You will be mind blown.
Layne had the best voice of all time in any genre. Anyone who takes time to really listen to they’re music would agree
Absolutely!!!

Do the original video for "Them Bones" next!
Pretty sure he wore SHADES 😎 all the time so people couldn't see how HIGH he was all the time 😢
Awesome video.

Hi Nikki 👋
Hi! 👋🏻
I'm upset I'm 2 days late seeing you react to this, YOU HAVE TO REACT TO "MAN IN THE BOX" and LOVE, HATE, LOVE, live at the Moore
I can't think of many things I hate more than censorship. The people responsible should know hunger for the first time.
react to psychotic break by jerry Cantrell
I will add it to my list! 🎵
if u feel some of the quik flashes of war scenes is bad .... those people, on both sides of the war went thru literal hell. horrible.

Absolutely isn't.
See if you can't put a leftist spin on it. You know, kinda like the Ovomit apology tour...
