One qualm with your evaluation of resist vs. nanite shield: If someone surprises you and you take a few bullets, then activate the nanite shield, you will get it's full benefit while getting to cover. The resist shield only helps you if you already have a good stock of hp and shields to use as a buffer to absorb damage. That is, the resist shields usefulness goes down as you are lower on health--precisely when you need another shield. So that's one benefit to the nanite shield.
Nanite shield's advantage is being useful midway through a fight, like when being ambushed. Since the resist shield only works on your current pool of health and personal shields if you don't have it up when you're first getting hit its not as effective. But the Nanite shield allows you to get it up late and get full protection using it.
I'm level 32 now and I still watch your guides, because I haven't really upgraded any class except engineer. Thanks for the informative video. I'll be making adjustments to my heavy based on your conclusions. Enjoy the double XP while it lasts through the end of the year.
i just absolutely love the heavy assault :3. I can take on tanks, infantry and even though i havent really spent a lot of points into class upgrading i still do really well with it :). Thanks levelcap for giving good ideas on how to spend points in the future.
Good vid. You left out an important point about the rocket launchers. The two lock on ones can also be dumb fired. They will shoot without changing any fire modes without locks. My fav is the anti air RL where I can dumb fire ground targets and lock onto air.
About the shields, i prefer the nano shield because if you don't have full health and full armor, the resist shield won't do a lot for you, so you have to burn restoration kits and wait for your shields. It also slows you down, making escaping very difficult. So you can't say that the resist shield is flat out op, it comes down to personal preference.
It would depend on which gun you're using. If you're new to the game, recoil compensating might be a but tough, but when you leArn how, none of the guns have significant recoil. The NC6 for example has monstrous vertical recoil, but once you cert into grips and compensators, you'll find the recoil easily controllable.
There's a thing called spacebar flight, where you hold down spacebar and the forward button while looking at the ground, and with max speed on a mosy, you can go 60+ speed.
Resist shield is all about popping it proactively whilst on max health. NMG can be more effective if you activate it as you take damage, or if you are already wounded. Also as you have to have the Resist shield up before you take damage, you be spending more time with shields up and become a much more visible target because of that, perhaps attracting unwanted attention. :) Also some speculation that sniper rifles and knives bypass the resist, and that also it doesn't help for falls.
Been countersniped by both Carv and TMG-50, actually. When I say countersniped I just mean I get picked off at around a hundred meters when I can't really make out the class at a glance. The Orion and Vanu weapons in general actually haven't been bothering me so much. The point was, with foregrip, compensator and a good sight, the Carv can laser clean through a sniper at medium-long range and not miss too many shots.
I've played all three at this point. I found my scores were consistent across all of the factions, the only difference was the tactics I had to employ. Vanu was about sitting back a little ways and picking people off with my superior accuracy. TR was about mid range combat and managing recoil. NC was the same, but had a lot more benefit when getting in close.
About the grenade slot, I think the concussion is best for CQC because you throw it, explodes on impact, and people in the radius are slowed, and almost useless. Easy targets.
Yeah, I'm personally just finding this out about my computer. My Dad got me a laptop for college through Lenovo's "build-your-laptop" thing. Fantastic laptop, 4GB of RAM with a 2.80 gHz Ivy Bridge I5, (not the single greatest thing ever made, but leagues and bounds over my usual hand-me-downs) but an Intel HD 4000 graphics card. It can run most Valve games pretty smoothly, but just about anything else (even though the card is supposedly "DX11-compatible") only runs well on DX9.
This is true. However when you have a few levels in resist shield it will last quite a long time, and since it dosn't degrade from being fired upon either you can really afford to adopt a more agressive use-style where you pop it on even if you just expect enemies somewhere near - rather than trying to optimize the nanite mesh by activating it the second before you get fired upon. There is no clear winner IMO, but resist shield is definitely viable.
i've talked to the DEVS at SOE, and they say, that it really doenst matter that much, who is the leader. the only took tobuscus so that they could get his fans, into planetside :)
You can see that in the video the resist shield gets activated only after a portion of the damage has been done :) Also I believe adrenaline shield doesnt only recharge on kills but passively as well...
i, as a heavy LOVE the combination of resist shield and the flak armor. If youre honest some more hp dont help very much, but not getting killed by a grenade or a bad aimed mag of rocket pods is godlike^^
Thanks for the shield upgrade info, I've been toying with which to take. As for the LMG, I'm not happy with it. I find the medics assault rifle and the engineers/light assault carbine to be far more effective. Especially in close quarters. I'd recommend saving up for the mini-gun as soon a as possible. However at 1000 cert, be prepared for some major cert farming.
It gives you less health and it is less effective over time activated. The Nanite Shield is good for running through fields from cover to cover where the Resist Shield is far better for base assault and CQC. The Nanite scenario is rare and the difference between death and surviving from the shield is tiny. The Resist scenario is far more universal and useful.
Apparently they put in a breaking point for the resist shield. If it takes 400 or more damage, it drops. This means that against for example the Gauss Saw and sniper rifles, it's useless. Probably gonna go back to the NMG... Too many things bypass the resist shield now days.
While playing PS2, I noticed that the base rocket launchers for each faction is different. The VS's rockets seem to move slower, and have more arc. They are also easier to locate, and trace to the shooter. The NC's rockets move the fastest, and don't have much of a smoke trail to follow. The TR is in the middle of the two. I think that this might be a balance thing for the heavy assault, or it might just be me.
Both locking rocket launchers can be used like a dumb fire rocket launcher. Buying the air locking launcher gives you the choice of locking on and taking down an air target and can use it as a dumb fire launcher against ground targets.
Adrenaline Shield is exactly the same as the NMG after you get a single kill with it (+15s worth of shield energy. Realistically, every time you pop shield, you'll get a kill. Any kills over 1 per recharge is just gravy.
Allready more than half way certed on NMG, but this makes me think about putting some points on the resist shield. For Braveheart style platoon vs platoon full force frontal attack I can agree that the resist shield seems like a better alternative, but I still feel that NMG is the better choice for sneaky flanking manouvers, where you don't activate the shield untill you get fired uppon (perhaps even after you allready got hit by a bullet or two but before your normal shield is down).
Resistance shield is better if you activate before you take any damage. Nanite shield is better if you activate it after you start taking damage. i.e. If you're going to be proactive with the shield, choose Resistance. If you're gonna use it as an emergency get-out-of-jail button, use Nanite.
VS has generally better accuracy, less recoil, but a reduction in damage and fire rate. NC is the exact opposite - inaccurate, recoil-heavy, but enormous damage... so you don't want to go against those guys in close quarters. TRs have massive clips but manage to maintain a balance between the traits described above.
The game is relatively well balanced and building your spec. should be based on your gameplay style. Advanced shield capacitor is great for emptying your magazine and hiding as it recharges almost as fast as your gun at higher levels.
I actually prefer the nanite mesh generator, because the resist shield needs to be on immediately when getting shot at, whilst the mesh gen can be activated whenever. Just my opinion tho :P
I believe it will. Your GPU is pretty weak (not really designed for games) but the game itself is very scalable in graphics and its main limitation is that is CPU heavy - and your CPU is decent, so if you don't mind playing on low graphics you should be able to run it. Just don't expect stellar framerates.
Aslo the AV nade only does 10% damage to a sundy. Only good if you need to finish off an near dead vehicle, and has the standard 3 second timer before it blows.
They're all about the same. Vanu stuff are easier to use. But you can't just pick 1 class to play, I would suggest switching classes frequently depending on what's required.
So, what would your suggestion be in what I should invest my first points in? In the shield? or weapon? or medkit? Or a better launcher? Thanks in advance! Loved your vid
Lately AMD has been pushing for more cores with low IPC vs Intel with less cores but higher IPC,which means multithreaded games will run better on AMD 8 core, while non-multithreaded games will run better on Intel quad cores (for chips within the same price range ofc).Choosing AMD for low and and mid end is not bad choice but high end and ultra high end Intel stands alone. Planetside 2 so far isn't very mutithreaded, it seems it makes most use of dual core chips so CPUs w/ higher IPC are better
Hey, LVL. May I suggest you use a different color scheme for your planet side video backgrounds? It would make it easier to differentiate them quickly from your BF3 videos. Just an idea :)
I agree... Just looking at this makes me cry. He's firing full auto and not a single bullet goes rambo and tries to hit targets off-screen. I would tottaly have played Vanu if it wasn't for my personal issue with wearing hideous purple spandex.
VS have less recoil on their average AR and carbine but TR have less recoil on their average LMG. NC has superior spread when aiming and standing still if you can control the recoil. VS have relatively poor middle-of-the-road AI MAX weapons compared to the other factions. True, VS have no bullet drop and faster reloads on average, but I wouldn't call it easy mode. With the number of sidegrades SOE is pumping out, every empire will have exceptions to most rules sooner rather than later.
problem with MAXs is that in SOE keeping the MAX an infantry class and not a walking tank is that they act so much like a HEavy Assault with the buff/nerf scale it shifts between MAXs and HA being more powerful. When the MAX is more powerful there is no point in playing heavy. When the MAX is equal the diffrence between MAX and heavy is the Heavy can self regenerate and has longer range.
Nanite shield does have one advantage in that you can jump off a rooftop an not take damage lol. It works best if you only activate it in the middle of a gun duel when your normal shield is about to fail. And yes Vanu are total easy mode.
My comp is 5 years old this summer and runs PS2. Intel Core 2 Quad 2.83GHZ, 4GB ram (DDR2 if I believe). EVGA Gforce GTX 260. Not the best frames but runs pretty well. I would think you would be fine. Its free to play though so may as well make sure your drivers are up to date and try it out.
Disagree on shield, because of already low TTKs its more about who gets the drop and the starter shield can save you actual healthbars and help you go on sprees better. But mainly you seem to have trouble timing and deactivating your shield. Maybe with good use of the regen pot you could make great use of the other shield? Also expected some mysterious cert... but nanoweave and one of the two potions is all you need, I would agree. What certs you use for pulsar? Accuracy makes me wanna Vanu.
Used the Resist shield since beta (when it was silly overpowered). Seems to be way less powerful now, though, and I switched back to the Mesh Generators lately. I'm way more effective with those I noticed.
Dont bother with the anti-vehicle grenade, it bounces a crazy amount and doesn't do enough damage. The concussion grenade can be a good room clearer as most of the time the enemy has no idea what just hit them and they can't move fast enough to respond.
I did, I have a VS with BR 11 right now and all I can say is that I regret not trying more VS before spending about 30£ and 50+ hours on my TR char! Vanu weapons are insanely op compared to the other factions, the standard LMG is more acurate and has less recoil than my NS-11 does... And I have foregrip and a compensator on the NS-11. Right, maybe I over exaggerated a little there but it's not far from it honestly. Oh and the NS-11 is an assault rifle, not an LMG so it's pretty crazy =/
I personally think I'm going to save for the anti air missile. I already have a few unlocks, but the anti air missile would help for when I'm getting the crap bombed out of me.
Pretty much, if not there is usually one nearby. Honestly I'd rather have tank damage reduced by 50% than more rockets in literally every tank battle. Especially with how many HE tanks there are.
The NC have slower firing guns with more power, so you can't quite say that the TR has more potential than them. But, the TR's LMG's have a higher fire rate and lower recoil, which is why I like the TR. Just saying.
Except.... if you upgrade the NMG to max as well as the Resist shield, NMG is stronger then the resist shield. Check out the damage charts of NMG and Resist. But i guess it's each to his own...
Also as I was looking at the comments of each factions pros and cons, I just have the time to say that even though NC has pretty annoying recoil, the default Gauss SAW of Heavy Assault class does the highest damage out of any default weapon in all the different classes (don't know about MAX but I think it's pretty close). The downside is that if you're a beginner, it's the worst weapon ur gonna have but once u get better with different guns, I suggest coming back to the SAW and adapting to the recoil and the fire rate. it has decent ammunition (300) and you can get an extra ammunition pack as well. Ur best friend is an engineer (haha :-P)! I compensate for the recoil by getting a forward grip which reduces the horizontal recoil and i'm soon gonna get a compensator or something like that to balance the vertical recoil. All in all, the SAW is an effective weapon at close quarters - midrange and if you get the Trueshot (4x) scope, it's also does decent damage to enemies far off so u can have ur revenge at any infil you spot xD
As an anti-tank soldier, why don't you mention the Flak Armor? They just doubled the explosive resist it gives you so with flak + resist shield you have extreme reduction to tank shells. Max rank flak armor is 50% resist now. It's definitely worth looking at if nothing else.
Personally I think the Nanite Shield is better than the Resistance Shield because you have to activate it before you start getting shot for it to be stronger.
Supercomputers don't usually run Windows or are optimized for certain task rather than pushing pixels. A super gaming computer would be a better name for it, crossfire and Sli rigs with upper mid ends cards and higher should handle this game without problems if they are not CPU bottlenecked and if the drivers work correctly. I haven't checked so idk if AMD or nvidia have already released multi GPU supporting drivers for Planetside 2, i suspect they have but idk if they have microstutering issues
Also TR have Prowlers with Anchored mode (Helps alot) , also VS and TR have great ground combat but VS have the numbers , if you don't believe me search up on youtube TR zerks and stuff , a lot of fun shit and you'll see the numbers on VS..
You forgot to mention the fact that when shot with the nanite shield active, your shield regen delay won't be reset. This makes the nanite shield superior in my oppinion when either fighting at long rang against infantry or when being stealthy. The resistance however is the best in close range and when being dedicated anti tank, with close range tanks. Just think you shouldn't make your review that one sided :P
Not the starting one, it's only effective shotgun to smg range, otherwise it has ridiculous recoil when shooting for long enough to kill an enemy, unless you manually fight against the recoil.
Hey LevelCap, I've always wanted to ask if you play or have played Team Fortress 2 and your opinion on it. It's somewhat casual (except there are tournaments that pay quite a lot of winnings) so it would be interesting to hear the opinion on it from someone who plays quite different games. I'm not asking you to upload a lot of videos about it, but maybe just one to hear your review of it.
People on the offical forums rage about the CARV.. statswise, the Pulsar LSW is better in almost all aspects. With the Carv nerf in game update 1 the LSW is now straight up better. lvl5 nanoweave only gives 165 more hp.. which is about 1-2 more bullets.. not worth the 1000 certs. stick with 3/4 is fine which gives around 120-140hp. so the 1000 certs isnt worth the cost atm.. Also no battlerifle? Dont like the challenging guns do we lvl
Think of how us Smurfs feel :/ we have to deal with the Orion AND the Carv T_T Freakin' laser beams. Don't get me wrong, I love my SAW. It tears through Barneys and Elmos like crazy...but I gotta pick my shots and burst at range. I've been countersniped by the Carv...
i agree. tobuscus is not that good at FPS games and levelcapgaming is amazing at them. I like to see a good player who gives us tips and reviews about the game they are playing which levelcap's doing and tobuscus made what; 5 videos on planetside 2 ?
with the game off. go to useroptions.ini in start menu. set shadows to 0 and render distance to 700. if that doesnt work keep lowering the rendering section. in-game these tweaks are unavailable since there lower than low settings. im using a freaken i5 2410m 2.3ghz 4gb ram and intel hd graphics. i usually get 30plus fps. 20 in big battles, which honestly is not that bad.
Are you sure you're getting counter-sniped by the Carv and the Orion when they are mostly CQC LMG's? Usually most TR run with the TMG-50 as of late, which resembles an NC's LMG more than anything, with higher damage and low rate of fire.
Im not really into Vanu but you are right first focus on class the the rest of the crap....I played 50 levels with my NC character using only ironsights and a forward grip
I'm vanu and I wonder the same thing. I never really see Terran around and always end up dealing with the NC. Only Terran I see is the hit and run mosquitoes that chicken out as soon as they get shot at and a few prowlers.
levelcap, would you put a laser sight or forgrip on the lsw? Also i feel you should mention you can still dummy-fire the lock-on weapons, just fire them before a lock or when there is no lock. I haven't fully tested it but i think they do different damage than the starter launcher though.
One qualm with your evaluation of resist vs. nanite shield:

The Gauss SAW with Comp and Grip is ridiculously good. I don't think Level remembers the sniping before they toned it down.

Great, great, GREAT video! I was really looking forward for this. Thank you so much! I'll go spend my well earned certs now. =)
Nice one Level, been waiting for this one :)
FUCK YEAH!!! new level cap video on planetside 2.. so happy now :)
It's in the options menu. I believe it's called 'Centralized HUD" or something like that.

@CaptSC I completely agree with you, as NC I'm just a "Tank Buster"
Depends. If you use a rocket launcher over C4 then it's better to have the munitions upgrade so you can carry more rockets.
There's a rocket launcher that can lock on to both Air and Land vehicles. It is very useful.
I believe it will. AA rockets are best. You can lock on to air and dumb fire ground. Not much in this world can help you if you need aim assistance for ground vehicles.

Hey, you definitely want a dedicated graphics card for this game because it currently isn't optimized too well, the rest should be ok.
Great lvl!! I know I bought the Flare LMG which hits a bit harder for only 250 certs for vanu HA. I'll def. get the resist shield though now!
You can say the same thing about the other two sides as well except damage for NC and fire rate for TR.
Vanu do have recoil, it's just fairly easy to compensate for it if you compare it to NC for example but TR is about at the same level I feel.
Very nice, thx, Level!
Did you have both shields on the same level when you compared them?
Except.... if you upgrade the NMG to max as well as the Resist shield, NMG is stronger then the resist shield.
Also TR have Prowlers with Anchored mode (Helps alot) , also VS and TR have great ground combat but VS have the numbers , if you don't believe me search up on youtube TR zerks and stuff , a lot of fun shit and you'll see the numbers on VS..
adrenaline shield regenerates normally as well as additional regeneration upon kill
I play for TR and I do like Tobuscus...but I agree...LCG would have been a better choice for VS haha.
Cheers
thx for the tips man ur awesome it helps alot
I think your great at what yo do , thnx for the informative vids , I'm using your advice and have good results ! . I love your Apt !! , stay young !!
The vanu is the reason I am a TR. Vanu is just too accurate so I wanted a challenge. GO BRTD
Luv it lvl great as always
bro its easily the most addicting game i have on my PC. Get it :D
Toby was rarely on. Levelcap is very active.
with the game off. go to useroptions.ini in start menu. set shadows to 0 and render distance to 700. if that doesnt work keep lowering the rendering section. in-game these tweaks are unavailable since there lower than low settings.
im using a freaken i5 2410m 2.3ghz 4gb ram and intel hd graphics. i usually get 30plus fps.
Well integrated graphics won't give you a chance, but CPU seems nice. Should work good (but not best) if you buy a gpu.
Well, after playing dozens of hours as NC heavy, playing with a Vanu heavy made me feel like a W40k Terminator.
MOAR planetside! pretty please
No. TotalBiscuit is leader of the Terran. Tobuscus was the old leader of the Vanu till they changed it to good ol' Level.
How do you buy your weapons? Do you buy station cash? Grind for certs? Or buy the xp boost?
Im not really into Vanu but you are right first focus on class the the rest of the crap....I played 50 levels with my NC character using only ironsights and a forward grip
the AA rocket launcher can also fire without a lock so you can shoot ground targets
Nice video. Max VS guide please ! :)
He is? YES!
Holy crap the vanu lmg has no recoil. Playing the HA on NC is super hard mode, the gun gives you maybe one accurate shot.
Make a Tank Guide, as in MBT, for all tanks, NC TR and of course, the Magskater.
