Bob Dylan Rehearses "Obviously Five Believers" In the Studio [BLONDE ON BLONDE OUTTAKE]

  • Here is an interesting little tidbit of music history. It's really incredible that we're able to listen to studio banter during the making of one of the best albums in history. This recording is kind of a "fly-on-the-wall" look into the Blonde on Blonde sessions. This was one of the final tracks recorded for the album, and whereas there was a much more light-hearted vibe on earlier sessions, impatience and frustration can be sensed here. This is Take 1 (Breakdown) and Take 2. At this point in time, Dylan called this song, "Black Dog Blues".
    More studio outtakes to come, and be sure to check out this playlist of outtakes I've previously posted: • Studio Outtakes .

      Might have been some amphetimines in the mix during this period, watching film and clips he looks like Johnny Cash with his arms flailing around all the time. Might have cause some short tempers while gnawing their teeth down.

      @louise_rose 3 года назад +1

      @@hammer44head Yep, Dylan certainly had a drug addiction problem around this time. He was doing outstanding music, live and in the studio, but also caught in a long-term frenzied "gotta keep running fast or the wind will knock me over" situation. In a sense the motorcycle crash may have saved his life by freeing him from inhuman expectations (his manager had already booked him up for a new US tour in the fall of 1966!) and allowing him to take a step back out of the spotlight.

    • @hammer44head
      @hammer44head 3 года назад +1

      @@louise_rose - Yeah, another tour after the earlier one probably would have jacked him up. Besides, we got a lot of great stuff on the Basement Tapes recordings that are still being collected. I love those songs every bit as much as anything 66 and pre 66.

    • @louise_rose
      @louise_rose 3 года назад +1

      @@hammer44head Yes - and without Dylan's sabbatical year of 1967 and the Basement Tapes, the Band wouldn't have emerged the way they did either. The guy is one of the essential singer-songwriters of modern times. He totally deserved his Nobel Prize. :)

    back then, musicians griped about the chaos of working with bob in the studio, but seeing as this chaos produced some of the most legendary albums in history, maybe, just maybe, bob knew what he was doing

    Consider that on *just* Thursday March 10, 1966, this crew recorded the album takes of Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Obviously 5 Believers, Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat, AND I Want You. Outrageous creativity

      These moments in the video would have been "early in the morning" indeed - long past midnight, perhaps at 2 a.m. Everybody's a bit tired but determined to lay down this song too (it's amazing how little studio time was booked back then, even for a superstar of Dylan's stature)

      I'm not even hearing *what* it is that makes Dylan suddenly break off and ditch the take (somebody being too slow at that point?) but I still break into laughter every time I hear it happening: "what the -".😄 The funny thing is how seamlessly he breaks the fourth wall, he doesn't even change his tone of voice!

      On the anniversary edition of Deep Purple in Rock, at the start of the rich set of bonus tracks, there's an engineer's voice saying, in a VERY educated and polite "Oxford English" tone: "Kneel and Pray - take one!". Kneel and Pray was the working title for Speed King, but the band were told by EMI they could not call it KAP (allusion to oral sex). 😄

      No! I wonder who said it as well. I had to look it up ... In "She's Your Love Now" Dylan sings, "She'll be standing on the bar soon / With a fish head and a harpoon." That was recorded on January 21, 1966. While "Obviously Five Believers" was recorded 7 weeks later, on March 10, 1966. So maybe whoever said it remembered it and ... Oh, hell, I don't know!

      Thank you so much, that's a huge compliment :) Hmm my favorite from B.o.B. would prob have to be 4th Time Around. Just such a beautifully constructed melody and that nylon string is spellbinding. One of Us Must Know is a close second. Stuck Inside A Mobile is next. God this is hard. Visions, Just Like a Woman and Sad-Eyed are all masterpieces but I've heard it too much. What about you?

    • @Beatle-Byrd
      @Beatle-Byrd 3 года назад +1

      @@SwinginPig You’re welcome SP & great picks. My top would have to be Just Like A Woman as it shows Dylan’s softer side and how things like that affect him just as much as any of us. That moment just after the chorus where the nylon guitar plays those chords and then the organ comes in has to be one of my favourite moments on the album. Stuck Inside of Mobil has verses that are worthy of being compared to Shakespeare and I love how after the end of every repeat of the chorus the drummer does a different fill to introduce the next verse each time, it’s awesome. & for my third I’d have to say Sad Eyed Lady as it is a feat of lyrical magnificence and has to be one of the greatest love songs of all time.

    Hey Swingin' Pig, I was looking for a particular version of "She Belongs to Me" that seems to have been taken off of youtube. This version seems to come from around 1965 or just a bit after, and near the end of the song one of the lines get cut. If I remember correctly I think it is "Bow down to her on Sunday
    Salute her when her birthday comes Bow down to her on Sunday Salute her when her birthday comes" that gets cut but my memory might be wrong. I have looked at all the versions of "She Belongs to Me" on your channel and they're not what I am looking for. If you could help me out I would really appreciate it.
