@@lostrailbeds8289 Good Morning Russ, Really sorry about the Misspelled words! I guess I have to Check it out before I press Send! Lol. Hope that you're doing Well! Joe Scarfo 🏍️📷🚂
Another great video Russ! I’ve always liked the old corkscrew route. The bumping post by the Mobil sign was the NYC Harlem division. The Lebanon Valley drag strip is paved right on top of the old rail bed.
Excellent presentation, again! Love the stonework on the abutments at the 6 minute +/- mark. Sunday - just watched this video fot the second time! What a remarkable tour of railroad history, thank you for your work. Will you be starting tours? This video made my treadmill time FLY by!
That building at 30:10 does look like a creamery. I believe that those pilings were the bases for a return track for empty milk cans. When I was a kid, I lived in a town with one of those (active creamery at the time) and used to see the cans rolling down every day.
If ya go over Taconic Trail into North Adams and you happen to be exploring B&M, stop in if you like Mack and Brockway trucks, Oliver tractors, motorgraders, cranes and other equipment.
WOW! You read my mind...I was JUST over route 2 from 22 in NY to I-91 yesterday...August 3rd!! In the misty gray murky foggy driving conditions I thought I saw some old iron sitting on the left (North side of 2) My wife wouldn't let me turn around!! Haha
That old building,at the 56-57 min.mark, was an old freight house, and a couple of tracks have been removed.Bennington station is one of the most beautiful ever!!
Great job documenting the old Rutland. I can’t believe how many stations are still standing considering how long the line has been abandoned. Did you ever find more info on that steam locomotive? Keep up the great videos!
@Woodknotta Thanks...yes, the number of stations still left is pretty cool. This line traversed some wild twists and turns for sure. The old Loco is still there and is entirely scratch built. Seems it may be for sale in the future.....ooohh!!!!
@@lostrailbeds8289 now that would be one cool lawn ornament. I’m in central Mass but I think I’ll take the dog and go for a little ride up the corkscrew myself! Thanks for all the locations you have in the video, it’ll make planning a route a lot easier
The spot by the Hoosick River Bridge scene was is one of the places where B&M had two main tracks on different rights of way. Two predecessor roads built lines which both merged into the Fitchburg Railroad, which merged into Boston and Maine.
The other track went behind the farmhouse. The lines split at the state line, came back at Petersburg Jct. In Hoosick Falls, one track went over the other. At Johnsonville is where the separate rights of way ended.
Thank You! When 10/ 20/ 50 years pass by from now so much of this will be lost without folks writing things down on backs of photos, documenting, and sharing with others so, Thank You!@@brianburns7211
I'll bet those stone abutments that curve towards the creamery building are a ramp for the farmers to drive their wagons up to the building to unload their milk cans.😊
Very enjoyable, and informative, thank you. So the Rutland RR ended in North Bennington, or just the Corkscrew branch? What railroad took over from that point?
Quite the outing you had Russ. It is a struggle to stay off private property sometimes. We know why we are there but nobody else does 😆 The bridge supports were/are amazing, then the picture at the end... wow! Great job once again
Thank you Kevin! I'm headed back to the train in the driveway......got a tip from someone about it, and I think it's going to be a cool story. You and I do find some awesome stuff!
Oh oh oh, bad boy, you missed a bit if i can humbly say. The big fancy North Bennington station was the Rutland (if i´m not wrong, by memory of Rutland book). The second station was probably the freight shed. From the statue of the guy watching its clock , then you have that impressive station. Tracks curving left is the mainline. The one going straight is/was the Corkscrew, just like you said. Alive or dead. Well hard to say. But from satellite view it´s in use for car storage. Street view show no cars, rusty rails with dirt packed crossings. Meaning no trains passed there since a while. But Google Earth shows on north side of bridge overpass the track on road 279, a huge load of fresh ballast on the main and passing track. South of that 279 bridge, Rutland bridge pass over route 7A and concrete walls were erected in 1914 and are not in good shape. Track toward Bennington then comes a bicycle path somewhere. There is a photosphere shot on Rutland´s bridge over " Roaring branch Walloomsac Brook ". Bennington station isn´t small either with a caboose on piece of track located on 135 Depot street. Freightshed was probably on 115 County street. So as a resume, major costly bridges works were made betwen 1914 and 1925 and track was shut down in 1953 or about just a quarter century after. Don´t remember leasing dates by NYC, Then we know the financially decrepit Rutland that tryied its best to survived. All the rolling stock, locomotives, tracks were falling apart (Penn Central made a good copy of the Rutland). The only good stuff were the 10 (??) new Alco steam engines that finally went to the torch at age 10, to pay for GE 70 toners, S2, RS1 and RS3. The last try being in New cabooses and 400 Pullman boxcars in flashy green and yellow sheme. A long strike that last more than a year was the last nail in the coffin. Rutland was dead. A few trains ran after that to pick up left over stuff like speeders, tools. A long study on what could be saved. No traffic was estimated north of Burlington. Track was removed with Rutland´s Alco. A small portion was left in Ogdansburg that at that time had huge grain silos (gone) up to Norwood. Then track goes to Massena. The nicknamed Old and Late Coming (Ogdansburg & Lake Champlain) parallel to the border from Norwood to Rouses Point (NY) rails were pulled off. It´s the begining of Rutland trail Some stations are still there. The most impressive is in Malone at 14 Elm street with the 2 towers. Track was betwen them. The building betwen them wasn´t there but just a roof was there. Station is close to the river (hard to see with Earth). On other side of the river, roughly 6 Amsden street, the big new building and parking lot was the big Rutland shop from 1840 (??). I´m glad to have 2 sand stones of it. Gees, 2 bricks...of "huge shops". East of the station track ran in diagonal, crossed the NYC. Today the 2 railroads are gone. NYC station survive at 341 Elm street (Ben & Jerry) with diamonf that was behind. Rutland Rouses Point was torn down years ago. Was almost against the D&H one. Left over of wooden trestle on Lake Champlain. Then Vermont. Nothing left in Alburgh that was an important junction. Chateauguay (NY) station with a boxcar. Sorry, a bit mixt up geographically speaking. Stone piles of bridge at St Régis river at Brasher Falls, Deer river at North Lawrence. Freight shed (??) In Cherubusco. Station on Station Hill road in Ellenburg Depot. Real nice Moers station (private home). Be gentle & respectful please with piece of track, a speeder and D&H wood caboose at 109 Maple street. Rouses Point station is gone was about 150 feet north of the nice, in service D&H at 68 NY 276. The marina is on the Rutland. D&H shop left over with roundhouse, turntable and standing tower at 94 Chapman. Still remember when it was full of tracks and equipment. With Google Earth you have in province of Québec, Canada a nice one made in stone in Lacolle at 23 rue Ste Marie. It was used for customs. Former Napierville Junction railroad that belong to D&H. Well enough for today. Thanks for the ride. It´s a part of Rutland where i´ve been only in books.

Your videos get more interesting. HISTORY to be lost. Like my complaints about years past WHERE are all the old railroad pictures ? I guess nobody took any. I am the one who talked about my old slides that decomposed. I am still trying to digest some. Slides/Photos prior to digital cameras 20/24 pictures per roll and developing. End up with few pictures and what ? Where is that ??? !!! ROW's all look the same without some ID. I see alot of railroad clubs going over somebodies old pictures when they died and hmmm where is that ?? what ?? Will write more in message 2.
CSX has the rail line from Pittsfield to Eastern Massachusetts. Norfolk Southern has the rail line from Albany area/North Adams to Ayer,Massachusetts via the Hoosac Tunnel. Height limits they were given rights to use CSX line to south and 2023/4 are still re-laying rail in NY to re-connect their lines to CSX there AGAIN. THEN run double-stacks via that route. Old Boston and Maine NO CSX but Norfolk Southern !! RECENT a new railroad Berkshire Eastern gets that line (G&W?). I am not sure if NS still gets the route. I mentioned BEWARE of tunnel because NS runs high speed intermodal trains via it now and a person in tunnel ? They did re-hab the line to Ayer, Massachusetts, Berkshire Eastern ? Customers ? unknown Old PanAm/Guilford destroyed about everything. It is noted they never lost a dime but took most rail routes to the grave, Connecticut ? I think now Berkshire Eastern but not sure if NS rights still. Due to CSX buyout of Pan Am this stuff is what evolved. NOW this last video ? I see something better than a paved bike trail minus anything historic. Hey. I like bikes but.. These people are a disease !! They are not interesting in a railroad or history !! Oddly people can walk/hike anywhere in the woods and bikes can travel the roads. o--a taxpayer row just for them !! paved like the Interstates. Get rid of any history. They hang around railroad forums now trying for info to grab rail lines of any usage !! --o next ?? These rail trails are dangerous !! me nuts ?? The Appalachian Trail has its list of crimes including rare murders, Urban Bike Trails ? In Connecticut many robberies of bikers. Where are the police ? There are none. Best place to rob somebody, I might sound nuts but truth. NOW taxpayer money for more police !! New TV SERIES !!! The Rail Trail Police. Of coarse the debate of a ROW lost forever BUT a paved InterState ?
That back and forth info on ownership/ governing lines makes me dizzy!! Don't get me started on Rail Trails and the folks who push them down taxpayers throats!@@shepaug
o..ps !!!! I missed your rail trail comments... If a walking trail WONDERFUL. Paved...bikes at 115 mph....historic stuff unsightly..gone.... 345345345345345245 million for new bike trail o-there an active rr there ? who cares
It's a unregulated mess of a industry! CSX does not want Hoosick Tunnel ! But the state of Massachusetts is going to double track the B&A and increase and develop passenger service On the B&A and the Boston and Troy! CSX was caught lying in the hearings of the take over of Pan Am! About how busy the B&T was!

So true!
Customers ? unknown
Old PanAm/Guilford destroyed about everything.
Wow, thanks for this back-story! Railroads sure can be confusing!!
Did you treat yourself to a cup of coffee and a cider doughnut ?
Yes....I did!
