Utter is great here; he knows exactly who’s in the cell and despite how much Hearst tries to insinuate that he knows him, Utter won’t acknowledge that it’s him until he says his name. He’s content with fencing with Hearst until Hearst finally gives in. Utter, being who he is, despises those who think they should be known by all just based on reputation. Utter was Wild Bill’s friend, who was a celebrity in those days, yet even still introduces himself to everyone he meets in the story. He is the embodiment of a real man in a town of snakes.
I particularly enjoyed the bit with the corpse, insinuating (seemingly absurdly) that Hearst might have killed the man, further bringing Hearst down to the more common mans level. We, the viewers know that Hearst personally cut Swearengens finger off, and I fully expect that Hearst does not find himself above killing someone if need be. Telling Hearst that he is just another man probably felt great for Utter. He and the others are scratching out a civilization in the wilderness, and George Hearst would just as soon take this budding civilization and turn it into a company town to mine at his bidding. You go, Charlie. You tell that asshole that he ain't shit.
@@CoryBlissitte If I recall correctly, the corpse was a Cornish worker who Hearst had killed to discourage collective action and unionization. So both Utter and Hearst knew that, in a sense, it WAS Hearst’s knife that killed the man.
@@michaelmccarthy51 yeah, I always took Utter’s comments to indicate that they both knew that it was Hearst who had this person killed. And Hearst as much as admits it when Charlie says “is that your knife”? And before Hearst leaves he grabs the knife from the chest of the corps and takes it with him. I took to mean, yeah, that’s my knife, I.e., I killed him, so what; what are ya gonna do about?

@G 50 For me Deadwoods writing was far superior. And it was cut short at season 3 so you're comparing a completed story to an incomplete one. I personally found the wire boring. lol. And deadwood did get the movie but it was too little too late for me.
@TheNikolatesla34 The wire is nowhere Near as entertaining or well acted. The social realism in the wire is incredible, don't get me wrong. But the sopranos makes up for that with immense character study, humour, nuance. It's not a competition, the sopranos flies off the screen and never looks amateurish or unconvincing. It's a solid gold masterpiece, and so is the wire, but it just does not have the same quality.
Robin Weigert and Franklin Ajaye were excellent too, everyone on this show did a great job....so many compelling and interesting characters, I wanted to know more about the earlier lives of all of them.
I absolutely love this series. And the movie that tidies it up, sad to see it end. 😥 They all played their part so damn well, but the award, goes to Ian Mcshane as Al Swearengen and Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane.. The whole cast gets a Bravo from me.👏👏👏👏

Master Imaginariumdooblepopper the Hearst Corporation is still a pretty huge deal in the US. Chairman? William Randolph Hearst III. I think the family didn't particularly like how George was portrayed- remember seeing a news article or something about it
The thing that people need to understand is that Hearst is powerful and intimidating because he is a rich and powerful man. To most people, this is scary. But people like Utter, Bill, and Jane were killers. They held no value in a mans wealth or political influence. None of that matters when you live by a gun.
