How many parts of her soul is Abril expressing all at the same time? Left hand, right hand, left foot, right foot, voice, all going off in different direction and synchronized. Veramente incredibile.
A singing drummer is the perfect connection of the base with the summit, of the music's and the musician's heart with it's and his spirit. San Andreu is able to put a new peak to the surprise every time you listen to it. It's not just well done, it's marvelous.
I am not a musician nor do I read music, but I am blessed with good set of ears so I can appreciate these talents and sounds. I also do a little picking on Bass and a little strumming on Guitar (all "playing-by-ear"). I believe one of the most difficult things to do in music is, playing the Drums and singing at the same time... and playing the Bass and singing at the same time. This combination can very easily throw one's timing off or worse, sing off-key. I love it when Abril changes key... hardly noticeable until the chords shifts as the whole Band joins in. A salute to Maestro Joan Chamorro and most especially to the Band music arrangers. Absolutely amazing Band.
I sing and play fretless bass at the same time. Mostly it's OK because the foundation of fretless bass isn't the ear but the hands, but can get really difficult when the bass line's and the vocal line's rhythms don't align. That's likely to be much worse with a drum part. I only play drums well enough to keep time so I can't really comment with specifics, though.
Every time I see this performance I like it better than the last time. Listening to this young lady sing and play is an increasingly pleasant experience.
Joan Chamorro you are a gifted maestro to gather these young talented musicians who are all so versatile playing various instruments with angelic voices! Bravo!
3:37 look how relaxed Rita is standing there, delivering one of her best tb solos (from the first note at 3:16!) in a perfectly fast yet unhurried, melodious way! I remember when, three years before, she would raise to her tiptoes and pull up her shoulders from the sheer tension! This band is an incredible school of life and of performance! Kudos to Joan and all their supporters!
I think she first chilled to zen master calm with 2015 Joel Frahm "Do nothing 'til you hear from me". That was some kind of turning point. Joan Codina looked down from the trombone desk shaking his head in disbelief at her command of the performance.
@@fliprim I'm afraid to object: In both 2015 performances, she pulls her shoulder up from the tension. Also, there was no "chill" at that tempo with Frahm, significantly faster than the earlier "Kellso" version. On top of that, she played a "many notes" solo - you have to show off at the Palau and next to Frahm, haven't you? Anyway, she's on the way to brilliance!
@@paulsj9245 Heh! You don't go into a solo with an easy, genuine smile like that being tense. The shoulder? I more put that down to technique still to be smoothed out, like the little jump back she would do to gain an impulsive sound. But yes, on her way to brilliance.

So young and so talented. There's enough variety and sheer talent within this energized ensemble that it's pretty hard not to get into the mood and do some singing and toe tapping. KUDOS to these fine musicians for their great team work and bravo to their conductor!
This performance rivals the one at Dick Gibson's 1971 Jazz Party. Urbie Green, Kai Winding, Trummy Young and Carl Fontana were there; The ones I payed the most attention to since I'm a trombone player. I think Clark Terry played the trumpet solo on this tune. Abril keeps everyone here swing hard & on their toes. 5 star performance by Chamorro & his band.
Rita is amazing on the trombone on this song as well as the young man on the sax. Great facial expression on Avril. The sound man must have had a time getting the right volume drums to voice.
This piece of music has such great drive! My tapping foot gets tired, but there's Abril singing , keeping the pace with that great brush work, and her hi-hat never stops. The brass riffs are perfect. This wonderful arrangement totally swings!
