It’s been a busy year for Manchester City. As well as adding a 6th title in 10 seasons, signing Erling Haaland, and trying to extend Pep Guardiola’s contract, their parent company, the City Football Group, have been busy behind the scenes, closing a deal to bring Palermo into their family of football clubs, bringing their total number of teams to 11.
On today’s Explained, we look into this system, its similarities to rival football business Red Bull, and how it has helped City build a world-class side - as well as some of the deeper motivations behind Sheikh Mansour’s investments.

Long story short, they have essentially replaced short term debt with long term debt. Selling a large chunk of their future income to have an immediate cash injection now which they have then immediately spent in hope to get back to where they were (e.g. winning Ucl and la liga consistently). In order for it to work, they need to win those things and have success, if not, it could be really, really bad.

What an absolute rubbish of research and a huge disinformation from this RUclipsr..
The city football group is worth 5billion dollars in 2019, as silverlake purchased 15% of the Group for 750mil dollars.
Manchester City have started to recoup large amounts of money from selling their academy and fringe squad players. So much so, the past 2 transfer windows has been a net positive in transfers.
City also do not carry any debt. So all of their revenue goes to profits and running of the club.
There is nothing left to develop at the Etihad. The stadium, Etihad academy & training facilities are already one of the worlds best.
Generational talented youth players are flowing through City academy and if they don’t make it to the first team, they get sold for millions of dollars.
This just goes to show that this channel doesn’t know anything about the business model. Hate to break it to you, but the sheikh is absolutely getting a far better return on his investment than the stock market..

To your point about City not carrying any debt--they can pin any debt from Covid, etc on the smaller clubs they own and then wash money into those clubs to cover the cost, no? Or if those clubs turn a profit from player sales etc, could they not just send those profits to City and always operate the smaller clubs at a loss to feed the parent club?

There is so much financial information missing from this video. Silver lake invested 500 million dollars and China media capital invested 400 million dollars into the group to purchase stake. while the abu dhabi still holding a majority 75% stake in the group. Manchester city is actually started making profit(might have been affected by covid though) but they are going to implement the same running strategy into the sister clubs which will make them profitable in the future as they win trophies, best examples are new york city fc, melbourne city and mumbai city fc who have recently won the league in their respective leagues. Therefore it clearly shows that this model is profitable business actually.

Here we go again with the “sportswashing” talk.
    1. Nobody ever brings up the human rights abuses of America, England, China etc. Not making excuses for the UAE at all but if we are to have a true meaningful conversation about human rights abuses why stop at the UAE?
    2. Since 2008 CFG has spent 1 billion on Man City, they had to overhaul an entire team, training ground, local area and upgrade the stadium. You expect them to do all that with £5 and a hug? It takes incredible amounts of money to get a team competing in the Premier League nowadays. Especially since Manchester United completely dominated the league for so long.
3.NYCFC, Melbourne City and Mumbai City all won their leagues last campaign. Not bad for some “feeder clubs”. CFG obviously have a funnel for talented players to Man City because that’s the flagship club but that doesn’t mean they just neglect all the other clubs.

The video doesn't include that all of the outside investment raises the level of footballing economics, which trickles down to smaller clubs having big transfer fees come in, which raises the level and allure of football overall, and injects power and influence into the sport overall. As in, if there were no rich investors putting money they could be profiting more with elsewhere, then the sport potentially wouldn't grow as quickly/have the appeal to athletes that it does? I mean, this is purely from a financial perspective. Just thoughts.

    • @leeroy3573
      @leeroy3573 2 года назад

Come on mate, the trickle down effect was a nice idea in the 80s but nobody seriously believes it given the overwhelming evidence in society and even football that its a myth.
Pump money into anything and all that happens is the rich get richer and the poor are relatively worse off. See billionaires in the pandemic, dominance of top 5 leagues in Europe, big 6 in the prem etc...
Even if city having loads of cash did feed through to league 2 through transfer fees or whatever, all that happens is wage expectations rise as clubs speculate financially to reach the division above where there's more money. Something like 21 of the 24 championship clubs make a loss every year, similar in league 1. That's not because running a stadium or paying backroom staff is expensive, it's because players demand obscene amounts of money even at lower levels and clubs take on debt to fund it so they can reach the prem and the associated cash.
Pump money into the top, like City, and you can kid yourself that it helps lower clubs but everyone knows the rich get richer, the gap gets bigger and we have lost a competitive league structure. Isolated examples make it work on small budgets, but you won't find many league tables where wage spend and points are not directly correlated.

That's exactly what the Arabs do with Newcastle. They have all the money in the world, but if they use all that in single transfer window...thats FFP breaking. Bayerns dominance has been there years before the 50+1 rule was implemented they also made some dodgy TV money deals in the early 2000s to gain even more of an advantage
The only reason the bundesliga is behind is because we've got 50+1 while other leagues have owner that toy around and invest billions in the clubs that sold themselves but I do think most bundesliga fans don't really care about that...
