Bowser's Fury reminds me a lot of Portal. With Portal, Valve was experimenting with a new idea. So instead of releasing it as a standalone title, they tested the waters by making a short game and releasing it alongside other titles with The Orange Box. Nintendo's done the same thing with 3D World + Bowser's Fury, and I think that's wonderful. I really hope they'll flesh out this idea in a future Mario game, just like Valve did with Portal 2. The fact that Bowser's Fury is so short is a big reason why I love it so much. Just like Mario 64, there's nothing to make the experience feel bloated, which makes it more replayable. It's just a fun little game that you can pick up and finish in a couple of hours, feeling perfectly satisfied. I really, really love it.
Oh man, this game was great! Really hope we get a more fleshed out sequel to it. I definitely agree that they need to tone down fury Bowser, maybe if he only showed up while you're in between zones or if there was a mechanic that let you prevent him fully waking up would help. I liked fighting him a lot, but hated being interrupted on my way to a shine.
Well congratulations we're getting a remake of Super Mario RPG this year as well as a new 2D Mario and next year Thousand Year Door is getting a remaster. So we're getting 3 Mario games in the next 7-8 months. As well as a Peach game if you want to count that and a remaster of Luigi's Mansion 2.
I beat this game like four times and man it is a great experience. I had fun playing this game and I loved how it had new concepts. My only issue about this game is that it’s too short and suffers from a little bit of technical issues such as lag when Fury Bowser awakens or if you’re playing in handheld. Another thing is that it’s loading time is also a bit long, but other than that, Bowser’s Fury is a pretty fun game to play and I really hope future Mario games will have an open world environment similar to this one.
I also have this impression, maybe the next 3D Mario will have an insanely huge open world, as if all the worlds of odyssey were all tied together as one. It would be the biggest mario sandbox ever
It was such a blast playing this, the mix of 3D World level design combined with Odyssey/BotW exploration was such a neat idea. Having it packed in with 3D World, a game I adore and was underrated for a while until Odyssey released, made double dipping worth it. Wouldn't mind if the next game fully fleshes this idea out!
I enjoyed most of it. I booted it up the other day to start a new game and the areas are still pretty fun. I think the snowy area is still the best with great platforming sections, and riding Plessie around never gets old.
I especially love the Mario Sunshine callbacks like shines, shadow luigi, bowser jr. wiith his magic paint brush, the black goop, graffiti, and islands.
Keep up the amazing work! You’re an amazing content creator and I genuinely look forward to your videos. Thank you for helping me relive my childhood, these videos are priceless 😩😩
The biggest problem I have with this game is that it doesn't really feel like a believable world. All the levels in this game look like randomly placed obstacle courses and everything is built in a massive lake for some reason. Just compare this game to sunshine or Odyssey for example where the worlds feel cohesive detailed and believable with a clear theme.
Thats actually what I like best about the game. Mario feels too out of place for me in a desert or forest. In my eyes he fits better on obstacle courses.
Bowser fury is in my opinion the better version of 3D world. It fixes all my grip I have with this game. I absolutely love that you can keep and choose power up whenever you need it. The environnements feels more like a real world rather than a succession of levels and the last boss fight is awesome. My favourite thing is how you travel the world with Flappy (floppy?), it's always fun to move with the big dinosaur
loved everything about this game - played it together with my 5 year old son. we completed it within a few months. its his favorite mario game. *spoilers ahead* his favorite part is in the end when Plessie took the giant bell from bowser and got gigantic - he was off his seat screaming lol - he alwas wants to see it again since.
Are you sure? I went on a sort of Mario binge recently which culminated in playing Bowser's Fury, and I didn't find the game particularly easier than any other game really. Mario hasn't exactly been known for difficulty for quite a long time. I feel like BF is in line with the rest of 3D World. Some of those blue coin missions were pretty tough though, IMO.
Kinda wanna point out that at 4:46 the statement is not accurate. The switch release of 3d world+bowser’s fury has tweaked a lot of the movements, including increasing the speed/acceleration of running, climbing height, side jump height and etc. And the midair roll is completely a new add-on (yeah previously you can’t do that) after they learned from Odyssey. It’s honestly how genius to add that little roll, which opens up a huge action space for the game, making it an absolute 10/10 game for me
"Odyssey's idea of having levels not change over time" -- I'm sorry, what? Sorry to be pedantic, but each kingdom in Odyssey changes, sometimes drastically, usually 3-4 times. There are the main "story" moons (I call this "phase 1"), which direct you toward a boss or two, and often involve different portions of the kingdom unlocking one-by-one as different named missions. Then generally additional moons open up for you to get before you can move on to the next kingdom (although this varies from kingdom to kingdom), and sometimes the weather or time of day changes drastically (I call this part "phase 2," and I think this is what most people think of as the "main game"). Then there are additional moons that open up after you beat the main game in all the kingdoms ("phase 3," like visiting Princess Peach and spotting the Sphinxes or Taxis in the air, and the first round of Koopa Freerunning). And finally there are the moon rock moons that unlock when you break the rocks ("phase 4"; I think most people tend to combine phase 3 and phase 4 and don't notice the difference, but they are definitely distinct in the game if you want them to be). Sometimes there are even bizarre variations on this, like how the Cascade Kingdom store doesn't open up until you re-visit the kingdom while still in the midst of the main campaign ("phase 2b"?). And the Cap Kingdom doesn't have any phase 1 moons at all, and phase 2 only unlocks when you re-visit the kingdom (which the game does NOT direct you to do, at least not during the main campaign). There is actually tons of complexity to how the game's open world unfolds chronologically, but it's easy to not notice when you're in the midst of it. I tried to make a spreadsheet tracking what moons and other elements show up at different points in the game, but it got overwhelming and I wasn't sure how to properly log all the different variables.
This mode/game always looked so good, but I already completed 3D World on the WiiU, so I could never justify spending $60 pretty much only for Bowser's Fury. I wish Nintendo would just release it as a separate purchase. I'd definitely pay $20 for it.
My only issue with bowsers fury sometimes is that you have to hold the run button which can be a bit annoying if you want to move the camera to look around. But still a great video about a great game!
Just wanna start with, great video, now to the point. *I absolutely need a video on how difficult Super Mario Bros 3 is, I can't complete levels on that game to save my life. Your style of commentary on your retrospectives fit perfectly with how mind blowingly difficult Super Mario Bros 3 is, and also maybe throw the lost levels in there too just for some spice.*
It's not really true that it's open world, since you still need to unlock chunks of levels progressively. It's a somewhat linear game that is framed as an open world because of how seemless it all is.
I don't think people overlook it. It's just that it came bundled with Super Mario 3D World, which made people think that this is a "MGS5 Ground Zeroes" or "KHBBS 0.2" situation. People reckoned Bowser's Fury a tech demo to a new, fully fleshed out open world Mario game. A game with more main McGuffins, bigger stages, and wider boss variety than just Bowser over and over again. The only real technical issue I have with Bowser's Fury is that cat suits are very OP and can cheese some cat shines, but the power-ups are very easy to find. I don't mind the cat suit cheesing some cat shines, but make it incredibly rare to find so getting one of these is rewarding, but it sucks to lose it.
I enjoyed playing Bowsers Fury. I agree though that it can get a bit annoying when you're trying to get a shine and bowser wakes up to cause chaos. Especially after you beat the game and going for 100 shines...when the red sky bowser comes up and wont go away until you get a shine...that can be irritating... but i learned real quick to leave an easy shine ready to grab for moments like that. The rest of the time its easy enough to just avoid him until he goes away. They could also lengthen the time between wake ups. It seemed sometimes like i had just got rid of him and got to where the next shine was and he would be waking up again.
It was pretty epic; I played it a few months after launch as well so I had high expectations from all the buzz I'd heard, but it still didn't disappoint
I wasn't planning on getting 3D World, since I already have it on Wii U and it wasn't what I would call one of my favorite Mario games... but Bowser's Fury actually looks _really_ cool (the obsessive cat stuff is a little overdone though, they should have called it "Bowser's Furry" instead. It would've been more accurate lol).
controlling Bowser Jr in this game is really similar with Galaxy 2 where the second player controls a luma and can move around Mario. That game basically introduced that co-op ability into Mario.
the only bad thing about this game is taht everytime bowser wake up the switch start to lag alot💀 oh and btw, we know that we should not walk on that road near peach’s castle
Played it long time ago, but I remember a certain sense of frustration after the final battle when, trying to collect the remaining stuff, Bowser kept appearing over and over again. That kinda ruined the experience for me. That aside, I had a lot of fun
I actually just picked up this game again today, and it's so much fun! At first I was a bit weirded out by how different it was from other 3D Mario games, but now I'm loving it! Currently, I'm at 66 Cat shines, so I'm 2/3 of the way through. But who knows? Maybe once I 100% it I'll just have to go through a second time!
8:40 "Odyssey's idea of having levels never change over time" While showing footage of the level that changes the most in the game as you play it. It's not the only one either.
i meant like how with every single star/shine 64 and sunshine kicked you out while odyssey doesn't kick you out with every moon you collect. i guess i should have said odyssey's levels rarely change over time
I have played almost every 3d mario game (except sunshine, couldnt finish that) and unfortunately never REALLY enjoyed them. But Bowsers Fury was an absolute blast to play. Easily my favourite 3d mario game.
3D World Is one of the few Wii U ports I bought despite owning the original, because I surprisingly got it cheaper than usual in a store not too long after release, and because I was very interested on Bowser's Fury, and I absolutely don't regret that for a second Haha, had a blast with it
I wish Nintendo would sell this as a standalone game for a fraction of the price. Games are too expensive in my country. I won't buy 3D World again for this.
While the game is highly addictive, it does have its faults. It's a little too easy, the world consists of random obstacles courses, and the challenges are more repetitive than Odyssey. But overall, it's a fun romp and is really fun to play
I just finished playing it, it's the first time I play a 3D Mario game other than 3D World and I just wish it was longer and harder, it's own thing, and I fully disagree with toning down Bowser, it was the most fun i had in the game haha
Gameplay wise; ya its pretty good. Style wise? Not my thing at all. 1) Everything is cat themed which gets tiring 2) everything looks fake, like its not supposed to exist. In 2d environments this is easier to ignore, in a 3d environment it seems even more artificial 3) The movement is too limited without powerups. If you don’t want to use the catsuit all game you’ll be unable to access most things. Yes, I understand the catsuit is the main mechanic BUT at least making other powerups just as necessary would increase the variety. I like the idea that you can save powerups for later, a player 2 with more control, and the “plot” but it is not underrated based on the praise it has recieved
I would say this is a HYBRID. Is a mixture of the open approach of 64 and Odyssey with the powerup and gimmick level system of 3D world. That's honestly AMAZING and there's a singular issue though: Cycles. Fury bowser seems that happens both too often and not often enough. Overall, very average 3D mario game which means A GREAT GAME.
I love this game really. I think the bowser fights and cutscenes could be a but more polised but its fun and thats what counts. Also the runtime is the main complaint ppl have but eho cares. Youre getting quality annd 3d world is in here
Generally speaking, it does not bothers me that the game is shorter and easier than usual, it is quite expected from a DLC-like content. I only expected something cool and new to happen after reaching the 100 stars. Barely nothing changes, so it is quite boring. Besides that, the game keeps the great Mario standards of fun and level design.
I like this video pretty good 👍 ( but it would be better if u talked more about some game design I understand that u didn’t it’s up to your knowledge on the field)
I hate the fact that if I want to play bowser’s fury, I need to buy 3d world a second time. I already bought all the good nintendo games on the wii U. Having all these games sold on the Switch with upgrades is infuriating.
Bowser’s Fury is like a great EP that deserved to be embellished into a full LP
Or a great EP that wasn’t stretched to LP length with filler material
Bowser's Fury reminds me a lot of Portal. With Portal, Valve was experimenting with a new idea. So instead of releasing it as a standalone title, they tested the waters by making a short game and releasing it alongside other titles with The Orange Box. Nintendo's done the same thing with 3D World + Bowser's Fury, and I think that's wonderful. I really hope they'll flesh out this idea in a future Mario game, just like Valve did with Portal 2.

3) The movement is too limited without powerups.
Youre getting quality annd 3d world is in here
im pretty sure bowsers fury is the sequel to 3D world
3D Mario > Mario Odyssey
Generally speaking, it does not bothers me that the game is shorter and easier than usual, it is quite expected from a DLC-like content. I only expected something cool and new to happen after reaching the 100 stars. Barely nothing changes, so it is quite boring. Besides that, the game keeps the great Mario standards of fun and level design.
I think my opinion this game is great!
Beautiful game. Thank you again Nintendo
2:58 WHAT 😭what’s the good ones then?
Bowser’s Andropause
I like this video pretty good 👍 ( but it would be better if u talked more about some game design I understand that u didn’t it’s up to your knowledge on the field)
Easily the best mario game in my opinion!
How is this underrated? I’ve heard nothing but good things
I hate the fact that if I want to play bowser’s fury, I need to buy 3d world a second time. I already bought all the good nintendo games on the wii U. Having all these games sold on the Switch with upgrades is infuriating.
I noticed u have been saying there is only 6 3d Mario games, does 3d land not count?
