This video just made my mind up. As you have the fx3 with the sigma, so I would have the same set up. going to buy the sigma 24-70mm art lens tomorrow, thanks for the great video bro 💯
Coming from APS-C I was first turned down by the size/weight of this lens. But then I started to use it more and it pretty much replaced all my lenses for some jobs. Now I finally got an FX3 and it's a beast of a combo!
One of my two favorite lens to bring with me, I carry both this and the 14-24mm on all my trips. They’re both pretty heavy but it’s not bad when on is in your hand and the other in the backpack. Its ultra sharp And a pressure to work with. It’s a good alternative to the GM if you want to save money
You touched on all the important points when considering this lens, I used to own the Sony 24-105, but sold it and purchased the Sigma 24-70 art. I was very happy with the versatility of the 24-105, but wanted a 2.8, and after researching my options I decided on the Sigma 24-70 and can attest to the the superior quality of this lens. I generally like to stay with Sony native lenses, but as this 24-70 was designed specifically (not modified) for Sony, I was confident on it being a good match. Coupled with the Sony 100-400 GM, I now have two lenses that cover a broad range of focus lengths.
@@max-olson I did miss the extra reach of the 24-105 at first, but with my other lens the Sony 100-400 that I purchased, I think I have the ideal combination. I did a fair amount of research and found that the Sigma 24-70 2.8 was made specifically for Sony e mount and was comparable to the Sony version. I have taken some off the cuff low light shots and have been very pleased with the results. No regrets
thank you! both are great options, I felt the 24-70 was better for my needs! 28-70 I would be okay for travel stuff, but it didn't have that richness the art has!
This lens has been a dream, the autofocus is bang on every time and I’m loving that I have the option of a sharp image or soften things up. The weight is solid and I honestly prefer it. I don’t think anyone knows how good this setup is unless they’ve shot on a pocket 4K/6k setup haha

This video definitely helped my decision. I plan to travel for my photography so to have something versatile in my bag would minimize how many lenses I’d need to take with me. The GM II is quite expensive, but I think this lens would do.
Oddly enough I think this convinced me to get the 28-70 for the FX3. I’m mainly going to be using it to film my personal life and RUclips stuff and the size would most likely keep me from pulling it out. 20/1.8 + 28-70/2.8 might be the winner.

@@thomas.kovacik thank you! I was legit going through same lenses you suggested at the end , was like “do I have to get that g master?” Game changer 🙏🏽
so rad haha, yeah I'm sure the gm lenses are great, especially that gm 2, buuuuut, is it worth twice the price of the sigma? I'd argue no haha, I have no plans to upgrade to one. But if sony ever desides to send me one, sure I'd use it haha. But for now, the sigma keeps me stoked! well worth the 1100
The weight and size has been the main issue for me with this lens, my ronin sc can barely handle it. but the quality and sharpness balances it out, plus compared to g master 24-70 price, it might be a better choice in terms of budget.
thank ya! for me- the 24-70 is more versatile especially on FF sensors on crop sensors I still love 24-70 bc I often shoot around 24-35 on the lens anyways. On both my fx3 and c70 the 15-35 always felt too wide Just depends on your preference!
This lens is great. But people should be aware that the zoom direction is opposite of Sony lenses. I shoot sports and have developed muscle memory with my longer Sony zooms. So when I reach for this lens it really screws me up! Other than that, agreed that it’s a fantastic choice.
Yeah it is! Oh yes I do remember that, definitely would be tricky for some if your kit is saturated with sony lenses, it's kinda the same as the focus direction of Nikon lenses vs others haha, always trips me up but then I get used to it again
i want a softer image out of my a7s3 but the black mist filters don't do it for me. Unless i was specifically going for a dreamy sort of a look that supports the story or the mood i feel like they look awkward in talking head videos.
I feel the same! I stopped using those filters a while ago, I recommend looking into vintage lenses! I found the Contax Zeiss lenses to be a good balance of character + sharpness
Great video man! I use this lens but canon mount and it works great with the sigma MC-11 adapter. One thing I’ve always wondered is if I’m getting extra stabilization since the canon version has OSS. Do you m ow if stabilization is passed through with the sigma mc-11 ?
Thank you! I’m not too sure! With the E mount version, the stabilization / AF is legit perfect so if you ever wanted to go that route it’s a good option Would be interesting to see if Sony reads the OSS through the adapter, but not sure how well it’ll pair with standard or active IBIS
Hi I have 20 mm 1.8 sony lens. Do you think better to sell it and buy sigma 24-70 or keep it and buy sigma 28-70? For now I use 20 mm and 35 1.8 sony apsc. All is really good for doing youtube. But i need to replace apsc lens and to have 70 mm lens to shot.
Thank you! It’s a solid lens, I haven’t really taken photos with it but I’m sure you’ll have a similar experience to video: fast, accurate AF. With a nice image!
@@thomas.kovacik thanks! Yes.. for this exact reason I began looking for alternatives to still get some character but without the contrast reduction BPM gives, I’m currently trying a glimmer glass 1. Would you recommend another filter that maybe you are succeeding in using or have you ditched completely in using them?
@@vannitagliavento yup! I feel that, I haven't picked up that filter in a long time. I've looked into glimmer glass, seems like a solid option. Black satin may be good too. I'm hesitant to buy another one haha. I kinda want to get one for a mattebox if I do
Yeah so those people are referencing the old design! Sigma updated the Sony, not sure about the others. But I haven’t had any dust issues and I’ve had it in heavy winds in the desert tons of times My old 18-35 EF was a dust magnet, but that’s not the case now with the updated design
Don’t think so! Bc Sony has IBIS pretty much in every camera besides FX6 / FX9 Whereas canon stuffed IS into their RF zooms which is convenient as a c70 shooter
yeah it will! There will naturally be a crop bc of the crop sensor. usually is around 1.5x so this lens will be like a 36-105 FF equivalent, which I think is still great! It's a fantastic lens that you can keep if you do plan on getting FF cameras Not sure what kind of lenses are out there for the crop sensor Sony's, but I personally would buy this lens if I had the fx30
I would say so! You don’t need 1.4 or 1.2, 2.8 is plenty, but also shooting at longer focal lengths will compress the image, making the background feel bigger. As long as your subject is away from the background you’ll be fine! Focal length is more important than aperture, I always shoot around f/3.5-5.6 anyways
Thanks for the quick response mate…. I am getting the Sony fx30 in a bit and I wanted a lense to pair it with, would you recommend this? I’m a novice who’s learning videography
not directly! The new GMII is smaller and lighter If you have the funds, maybe I personally am keeping the sigma bc price and I tend to prefer sigma glass over sony. Sony glass tends to have odd colors a bit
@@PrudhviMitra yeah prob, I prefer the smaller size + aperture ring The sigma is still a really great lens, it's like 99% of the GM. the size / ring is a huge bonus of the GM II. I've had issues with sony lenses in the past where they feel "plastic-y" so not sure if they did anything to fix that
I’m sure it would be nice! Prob a bit heavy and bc it’s a crop sensor you’d lose out on that wide end I’d prob find something smaller / lighter and wider that equates to 24-70 on APSC
@@alxgngb5657 looking at bh, I could see the sigma 18-50 2.8, sony 16-55 2.8, and the sony zeiss 16-70 f4. I'd start researching there When I had the a6500 I ran with teh sony zeiss 16-70 f4 and it was so good, I really miss that lens
it works, but it's heavy and when you zoom the balance gets thrown off I would balance it around 50/60mm and then zoom about but I'd rather rock the smaller 16-35 pz or something similar in size and weight
No dust issues- they updated the design on the Sony e mount one You’ll be fine! I’ve had mine in crazy wind in the desert, had it caked in dust. Nothing got inside
You are wrong. Main disadvantage is, that the active stabilization does not work with the Sigma. So when you are filming handheld and move forward is it a restriction compared to Sony lenses. In this situation active mode is clearly better.
i think this lens is mid. 24 is not wide enough and 70 is not zoomed in enough. Whatever u want to do imo the 15-55 kit lens can get the job done as just much as the 24-70
I don't really agree! 24 is plenty wide for a "standard wide" 70 definitely isn't enough but it's something haha. I would love it to be 80 / 85 The sigma 24-70 is really smooth, sharp, color accurate and the AF is just as good as the gm lenses. I'm sure you can get the job done on the kit, but if you're looking for top tier performance out of a lens- the sigma 24-70 e is a pretty solid contender
Lens is too heavy with a fully rigged out FX3, colour, and skin tones are not as nice as Sony lenses. AF is not as good as Sony lenses and lags in comparison. We bought two of these lenses and sent them back. We bought all Sony, you get what you pay for. If price is premium on the list of needs then they are the next best thing for an FX6, but for an FX3, the 24-105 Sony is the better lens for all-day run and gun work. The 70mm is just too short without having to resort to clear-image zoom for interviews and close-up details. With the 24-105 mm you get a 157 mm lens truly making this a lens requiring few lens changes, whereas with the Sigma you have to stop and lose valuable time, and opportunities on a doc to make lens changes to achieve longer focal lengths. The Sony is far lighter, significantly lightening your entire rig. Image quality is excellent and the 24-105 is priced far lower than the 28-70mm Sony Gmaster, which is also a heavy lens like the Sigma, and similarly lacks the extended foal range. And it is another lens better suited to a shoulder-mounted FX6.
I had the Sony 24-105, sold it after using for three years and replaced it with Sigma 24-70. Image quality is way better, you get nice bokeh, richer colors and better micro-contrast. The images from 24-105 looks dull in comparison. So much happier with the Sigma.
The lens feels at home fully rigged out on the fx3, and for 1100 its pretty solid! I'm glad you're enjoying the sony lenses, they seem nice! But for most, having a sharp solid lens at 2.8 is more valuable than a 24-105 at f4. I also looked into the 24-105 bc that lens used to be the goat for run n gun. But I feel this new sigma takes the cake. It's not that heavy either when stripped down, I just did a 10mile hike with it and it was pretty mellow. I plan to bring it backpacking. Thanks for your thoughts!

yeah it will! There will naturally be a crop bc of the crop sensor. usually is around 1.5x
so this lens will be like a 36-105 FF equivalent, which I think is still great!
It's a fantastic lens that you can keep if you do plan on getting FF cameras
Not sure what kind of lenses are out there for the crop sensor Sony's, but I personally would buy this lens if I had the fx30
@@thomas.kovacik Thanks for the response 💯
Bro I’m an entry level creator . Did you use a custom lut on this ?
Yup I did! My own slog3 conversion lut
@@thomas.kovacik Bro can i buy it?
@@goodmuszic726 yep! Look on my website, you’ll see it there
Is it good for portraits ? Specially to isolate sub from background?
I would say so! You don’t need 1.4 or 1.2, 2.8 is plenty, but also shooting at longer focal lengths will compress the image, making the background feel bigger. As long as your subject is away from the background you’ll be fine! Focal length is more important than aperture, I always shoot around f/3.5-5.6 anyways
@@thomas.kovacik oh i got it , thanks for the reply man 🙏
Bought the tamron instead. Did I make a mistake?
Depends! Time will tell
will the power zoom on the fx3 work on this or any other lenses for Sony?
You can use clear image zoom with any lens, but no PZ
You’ll need a PZ lens like the 16-35 or that 28-135 or something
what is the IBIS performance ;like on this lense?
Pretty solid in standard!
Thanks for the quick response mate…. I am getting the Sony fx30 in a bit and I wanted a lense to pair it with, would you recommend this?
I’m a novice who’s learning videography
Thanks in advance
Only lens I own, bad ass
It’s so good! Solid option if you only want to own one lens
Is this also good for produc/food shots?
Yeah depending on what you’re looking for
Is there issue with autofocus on sony cameras,? A73-4-5?
Nope! It’s really good, if anything it’ll be the camera’s fault on the a73 at least
Have you compared this to the Sony 24-70mm GM II? If so, what're your thoughts and which lens would you recommend?
not directly! The new GMII is smaller and lighter
If you have the funds, maybe
I personally am keeping the sigma bc price and I tend to prefer sigma glass over sony. Sony glass tends to have odd colors a bit
@@thomas.kovacikwhat someone was willing to gift you the GM II would you leave the sigma ?
@@PrudhviMitra yeah prob, I prefer the smaller size + aperture ring
The sigma is still a really great lens, it's like 99% of the GM. the size / ring is a huge bonus of the GM II.
I've had issues with sony lenses in the past where they feel "plastic-y" so not sure if they did anything to fix that
@@thomas.kovacik would the sigma make more sense for hand held shooting due to the added weight !? Trying to convince my self to get the sigma lol
How would this be on a Sony a6700?
I’m sure it would be nice! Prob a bit heavy and bc it’s a crop sensor you’d lose out on that wide end
I’d prob find something smaller / lighter and wider that equates to 24-70 on APSC
@@thomas.kovacik what would you recommend?
@@alxgngb5657 looking at bh, I could see the sigma 18-50 2.8, sony 16-55 2.8, and the sony zeiss 16-70 f4. I'd start researching there
When I had the a6500 I ran with teh sony zeiss 16-70 f4 and it was so good, I really miss that lens
Whats the rangefinder thingy at 07:15 called?
It’s a spot meter I think! For finding exposure
help! :) do you have a focus problems with your 24-70 on fx3?
hi! I didn't, but with recent firmware I've been having AF issues overall
@@thomas.kovacik thanks for your reply! you mean with 3.0 firmware on your fx3 or recent firmware of the lens itself? :)
Can we use on full frame camera
Yep! It’s a full frame lens, you can use it on full frame or apsc
If you do whiskey coffee and repeat, you would eventually die.
Crazy hah
do u recommend for gimlble?
it works, but it's heavy and when you zoom the balance gets thrown off
I would balance it around 50/60mm and then zoom about but I'd rather rock the smaller 16-35 pz or something similar in size and weight
@@thomas.kovacik weight is concern on gimble......thankyou
Who's the actor at: 2:05?

I paused in the middle of this video and bought it.
Hah rad! Enjoy it, it’s a great lens especially for that price
u have dust issued on this time? please answer me. because i want buy this lense but so many people tell about dust issues :(
No dust issues- they updated the design on the Sony e mount one
You’ll be fine!
I’ve had mine in crazy wind in the desert, had it caked in dust. Nothing got inside
did you even watch the video?
what about the stabilization
works well! I heard with non-sony lenses you don't get the same performance out of active. I primarily only use standard and it was solid
Why not get the Samyang 24 to 70 and enjoy naming videos with AUTOFOCUS!
you could! I just have a history with sigma so I trust their product hah
You are wrong. Main disadvantage is, that the active stabilization does not work with the Sigma. So when you are filming handheld and move forward is it a restriction compared to Sony lenses. In this situation active mode is clearly better.
forsure! Yeah I never use active anyways so I probably missed that it wasn't doing something- I always stick to standard
You love it, wanted to sell it, learning to love it again? Lol photographer problems
I shoot video haha
Ended up selling for the sony 24-70 gmii and couldn’t be happier
Great review. Brilliant lens...does what it says on the tin. Very solid ...you can drive a truck over it.
thank you! yeah it's a stellar option forsure
i think this lens is mid. 24 is not wide enough and 70 is not zoomed in enough. Whatever u want to do imo the 15-55 kit lens can get the job done as just much as the 24-70
I don't really agree! 24 is plenty wide for a "standard wide"
70 definitely isn't enough but it's something haha. I would love it to be 80 / 85
The sigma 24-70 is really smooth, sharp, color accurate and the AF is just as good as the gm lenses. I'm sure you can get the job done on the kit, but if you're looking for top tier performance out of a lens- the sigma 24-70 e is a pretty solid contender
I totally disagree, the 24-70 gm ii is the best
This video was uploaded before that existed
Haven’t gotten my hands on that one yet but I’m sure it’s great
Lens is too heavy with a fully rigged out FX3, colour, and skin tones are not as nice as Sony lenses.
