- I wanted to find out how mass participation events felt since all events paused, or were cancelled, during the pandemic. I headed to Leeds city centre to run the Leeds Half Marathon, the biggest local event. I decided to run Leeds Half Marathon ahead of running the London Marathon next month, to give me a taste of returning to races.
It didn’t start well because I’d not paid full attention to the race instructions (my bad!). I’ve run the race so many times so I only looked up the changes due to Covid-19 and not to all of the race information. Definitely an error! Then… I got locked in the First Direct Arena! I was worried I wouldn’t get out in time to race but all’s well that ends well and I made the start line on time (luckily the race start was delayed!).
The support on course was incredible and running the race felt just like it did pre-pandemic! Although the extra hill due to the course change was a surprise! I was so relieved that running at mass participation events still felt the same. But… I've realised I'm out of practice at road running! With the London Marathon only a few weeks away it's probably too late to do anything about it so I'm just hoping for the best!

What was the difference, for you, in terms of feelings, emotions between a road half and an ultra?
I'm not organised enough to do a lay out 🤣 also, don't think I could do pod voice while running. Not enough breath! Lol I think you were right about the bunny 🐇🤣 Blue runners were first wave, sub 2, red were 2+, not sure about yellow and green waves but slower I think. Thanks re. time, I was happy with that. There's way more of a buzz at a road half because they're bigger events, ultras are much smaller in general but just so much more beautiful. Effort wise road running is harder as there's no change of movement, the monotony is a killer! Deffo prefer trail ultras although they can be an emotional rollercoaster!!! Another great video! I (very early) retired from Leeds University last year so it was nice to see some of my old haunts - and I agree with you that it is 'a cool campus'.

Isn't it just! I entered the Leeds Half Marathon over 2 years ago! Great to finally be able to run it! My heart was so happy watching the GNR at the weekend 😃 Hooray for normality returning 🎉

Thanks! 😃 Nowhere near my PB but it's hard to do all of the things at once. I've definitely gotten slower by training for much longer distances. I've literally just entered a 5km race series with 10 races this year, one a month so I better start working on my speed! 🏃♀️
Leeds Leeds Leeds! Love the not knowing where the start is and then getting locked in bit :) The race was fun to watch too, although it was strange not to hear you saying "thank you marshal" as you went!
Lol well if it makes you feel better I shouted "THANK YOU MARSHAL" about a hundred times (and I did lots of YAYs and OH MY GOODNESS HELLOs because loads of the marshals were from my running club 😃 I just figured 13.1 miles of 'thank you marshal' was too many to show 🤣 and yes, definitely Leeds Leeds Leeds! 😁

@@chrisyoung586 oh Chris I'm so sorry. I find it really hard to run in memory of someone special. It can be so emotional although it feels good to be able to do something to help others, even if it's too late for our loved ones. It's a fantastic charity and they'll be really thankful of your support ❤️

Great to see big crowds out. I went to see my brother do the 10km on Kirkstall Road.
I really thought the support wouldn't be the same but it was incredible! It felt even better than normal! I wasn't sure if it was because I've missed it for so long or because there actually we're more people out supporting! Either way it was great 🤗

Gave you a shout on the way down the hill from Horsforth! I bet that was horrible that bit. Also saw Tom Williams. parkrun was strong that day.

Thank you 😊 Your money would be safe because I always say this... I actually shouted it to everyone but I spilt some of the gel on my camera and it stopped working 😭😭😭 I had to fix it while I ran 🤦🏻♀️ I almost didn't get it working again or the end as it died again but luckily I managed! Phew... Lesson learned! So I have a stupidly wobbly bit of footage of "just a parkrun to go" but I couldn't use it 🤷🏻♀️
