I think Kino has never been really power hungry. The way he sacrifices himself indicates that he did care for all men under his supervision - he just wanted them to be disciplined so that they could reach the end of their sentences and go home. The moment this promise turned out to be a lie, he is shocked and he leads his men to freedom.

I agree completely, & I think he knew from the beginning of this episode he wasn't going to make it, he knows there is only one way out, & that way leads to an ocean. But just because he can't make it, doesn't mean he won't help everyone else do so.

Kino's story I think has a very strong parallel to Moses.
In the story, Moses was a high official in Egypt until he saw the brutality of the Egyptians against his people. Then Moses becomes a true believer in their rebellion against Egypt but was not able to actually enter into their promised land.
Kino was a prisoner with higher standing in the prison. He believes in the system until he sees its brutality first hand and he becomes a true believer in the rebellion. Then he's not allowed leave with the rest of the liberated prisoners.

Luthen literally points this out IN THE SAME EPISODE. That you should fight against oppression and fascism and hope your sacrifice will bring a sunrise, even if you don't get to see it.
The line was specific to Cassian too as Cassian dies to the death star, a machine his slave labour helped build. On a sunset watching the inferno creep ever towards him. His sacrifice and the sacrifice of so many others is what brings about the destruction of the death star, a move that crippled the empire like no other. A moment so important. So critical. We see how the sacrifices of so many other's lead now to the moment Luke fire's his shot. Kino, Luthen, Nemik, Mon Mothma, Ezra Bridger, Canan, Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso, K-2SO, Chirrut Imwe, Malbus, Melshi, Rook, and Galen... With out them sacrificing themselves when they did the Death Star would have destroyed Yavin 4.

  • @IsaacKuo

Kino is more than just a role model ... when he was losing it, Cassian made him do the announcements saying "It has to be you." That makes sense, since Cassian has no experience rousing up a crowd, while Kino has experience motivating his men.
But then Kino repeats Cassian's own words while looking back at him. "I'd rather die trying to take them down, then give them what they want." Kino does this, knowing he's not going to make it out of there.
Kino's telling Cassian, "You're wrong. You could do this. It could be you."

I think it’s amazing that in every story arc there is an influential character that Cassian leaves or loses and he doesn’t yet know their impact in his life. Then Cassian adopts those traits into the next arc. Story arc 1: Mother/B2EMO (Love) > Story arc 2: Nemik (Hope) > Story arc 3: Kino (Sacrifice) > ???. They are all shaping him into the hero he becomes.

As it appears it has been several weeks since he left Maave - and he was traveling and living it up in "paradise" - it is probable that only 100,000 to 125,000 credits remain (or even less). Great tribute to a great character. I think there was one thing that you might’ve overlooked. Around 6 minutes in, you say “He still hasn’t lost hope of regaining his freedom”, but I believe that he actually has. Throughout the prison arc, it is made clear that Kino knows the prison better than the rest. He knows how many guards are on each level. He knows there is only “one way out”. And that way out, is a leap into water, and he cannot swim.
His only hope is for the freedom of his fellow prisoners, who will follow him.
He leads them, knowing the entire final episode, that he will not get to enjoy the freedom that he is leading them to.
He doesn’t mention it to the others so they don’t get distracted. He climbs to the top with them so none stay behind to try and help him, damming themselves.
His leadership despite knowing he has know hope for himself is an example that Cassian (and Melshi) will carry until making the same decision to get onboard Rogue One, knowing the odds of survival are slim to none.
I think understanding this only makes his character better. His selfless leadership is admirable in ways that we rarely see in media or the real world, and Andy Serkis does such a phenomenal job bringing this character to life.

I'm gutted too, Andy Serkis and the writing team made an incredible character. I'm still hoping he jumped and used the floating corpse of another drowned inmate as a raft and made it to shore. Grisly, yes, but I really want to see him back for future Star Wars stories.

To add another level of tragedy to what happened to Kino the not being able to swim - my friend and I were discussing the Episode last night and he pointed out that when Andor was being assigned to a Narkina 5, he was asked his home planet. My friend speculated that they were specifically sending people from arrid or desert planets with helittle water to Narkina 5 because there was the distinct possibility that they could not swim even if they could escape the prison. Granted it looked like a fair number knew how to swim, but we don't know how many escaped.
Since sacrifice is one of the themes of the series, I personally think that Mon Mothma will make that sacrifice and agree to the arranged marriage for her daughter. She may dislike her husband, but I do think she loves her daughter enough to get her out of harm's way when she moves to openly oppose the Empire.

What a beautiful character and performance but man what a gut punch that was seeing his face and his saying he can’t swim. Seeing him realize he’s not going anywhere after all they just fought for and sacrificed. I don’t know if I want it to be left at where it is or if I’d rather know exactly what happened to kino after everyone else escaped. But god what a show and what an arc definitely one of my favorites.

My hope is in the second or third season, when we are focussed on other things, Cassian shows up at a rebel base to get orders, and runs into Kino, who has now found his way to the Rebellion. Maybe he got knocked in, and was helped to shore, whatever, but in honor of 'we never saw the body' trope, I'd love a brief moment knowing he did make it out.

being worked to death is quite a rebel presumption but generally the imperial humour in not targeting him amongst others that resisted , the escape plan was a do or die which wasn't exactly promised land , no aquatic predators was convenient

Honestly, I like to keep it ambiguous. Maybe he stayed, maybe he decided he'd rather die trying the remain in the prison. He did say he already consider himself dead so why not? But I guess that's the point, you don't know and you never really will. Another person lost in the chaotic first steps of the rebellion.

The whole series is how Luthen sets an example for Andor.
And then each mini-arch is about specific aspects of Andor’s growth. Nemik, Kino, & Maarva are all there building up Andor’s character. Each is now dead and their legacy weighs on Andor.

  • @Iceskyguy
    @Iceskyguy 2 года назад

I agree, Kino was awesome. Andy Serkis absolutely CRUSHED it in these episodes. A phenomenal performance. Honestly he had such a surprising character arc. If you had told me after the first episode, that I'd be rooting for this guy by the end of it, I would have thought you were crazy. There was no way. But then it happened and the road there was such a roller coaster too. As soon as I'd start feeling good about Kino, he'd go into unwavering manager mode and I'd be shaking my head at him but the end of episode 9, he had me pumping my fist. And the fact that he gave not one, but two great monologues in one single episode, just makes the performance by Andy even more impressive. Even if he was echoing some of Cassian's words, it was still great to see how far they both had come since the first episode of the prison arc.
I really hope Kino didn't drown or something because that would be so cruel, considering in his speech, he says "help each other", for him NOT to get help from anyone. That's one of the biggest questions for me from episode 10: Did Kino make it out and I hope they address it.
I'm sorry to say though, but I think the comparison to the fleet in The Rise of Skywalker and the so-called "superweapon problem" was so unnecessary. That's been a big problem with Andor, it's being compared to everything that's come before in a way no other project has been ever and often it's used to bash those other projects and put them down as if Andor is immediately superior to all of them. I KNOW that's not what Alex did here, he isn't that kind of person but it does feel like kind of the same issue. Why is making that comparison even necessary? Why can't we just let Andor stand on its own and be good, which it has been, and be good in its own right, instead of making comparisons to very different types of projects that can't really be compared anyway because they have different tones, messages, stories, characters and appeals. It's unfair to both sides. It's just been running rampant in the fandom since the series dropped and honestly it's hurting the show.

If they didn't show a body, they're fine. Kino found a raft or a ship or something. The Empire has to have their own way off of the facility, right? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
