Eric Johnson is one of the most gifted guitarists I have ever seen or heard. Used to live in Austin and regularly caught him in clubs. So much talent and style.
I still close my eyes like I did when was 17 years old back in the 90s pretending to play the guitar in front of a huge crowd every time I hear this masterpiece.
Masterpiece is right!! Eric played one song at my brother in law's funeral. They were friends. He didn't say one word. Just played one song and left. Classy guy.
Eric Johnson; one of a very few guitarists who can make his tone actually sound like there are lyrics being sang. SRV was probably the master at doing that. Must be a Texas thing.
Ironically I live in Texas and as an accomplished guitarist although not as excellent as EJ or SRV I used to listen to them both live especially back in the 70's listening to 'The Electromagnets in Austin when Eric was about aged 19. Amazing! But as far as being a Texas thing regarding guitarists that don't need a vocalist I would add sir Jeff Beck from UK. I'm sure Johnson would agree because you can hear quite a bit of Jeff Beck's influences in his playing! Also moving forward into Jazz fusion playing!
Still gives me chills after all these years. This guy is my favorite guitarist, I've seen him live many times, living in Texas has it's advantages, and seeing Eric Johnson is definitely one.

I'm listening to this because of Rick Beato's interview with Eric. He asked him what was his favourite guitar sound he got and Eric said the guitar solo at the end of this track. And how he had to fight with the engineer to get the sound how he wanted! And listening now I can confirm the sound and playing are both freaking awesome.
This song was playing at Universal Studios sometime in the 90's, my two daughters and my wife Deb was with me, the best time, best moments in my life ......... this song always reminds me of that night
Can't believe this guy is so underrated. It's so rare that you get this fine quality of sound from a guitar. It's so fine and crisp, like a gold thread.

I came upon Eric Johnson in the mid eighties when Tones came out. I played in a hair metal band and was playing the usual Ratt, Van Halen, ect. style. Eric really stood out. super clean, great technique, and a true chameleon. when Avia Musicom came out a guitar friend brought it over. We listen to it and I almost quit playing guitar. Awesome! Eric Johnson and Vinnie Moore both really played a huge part in what kind of music/metal I like these days. My dad exposed me to this album around the time it came out - might have been around '93. I was still under 10 years old and it blew my mind. @@MiscFightVids when people talk about who is the best guitarist and the like his name doesn’t get mentioned very often compared to people like hendrix, evh, etc. I’m not saying those guitarists are overrated but i’m just saying people don’t often think about eric johnson when they hear the words ‘best guitarist’ even though he is among the best (at least from my experience, i may be wrong)
Saw him live at an outdoors concert and it was truly one of the best musical events I've ever heard and witnessed. No showboating, just pure musicianship.
I could listen to this song all day long. What an incredible album. Eric Johnson is one of the most talented and most musical guitarists in the world. I first heard "Cliffs of Dover" back in 1996 when my father was playing "Ah Via Musicom" on the stereo. My Father said his name was Eric Johnson. I was hooked ever since and that was at the age of 11. I'm so glad I was brought up on this music. ERIC JOHNSON, YOU ARE THE MAN !!!!!!!
Thats amazing! i remember hearing Cliffs Of Dover for the first time in 1990 and i was 14 years old and in love with that song! use to listen with my walkman while laying in the sun back when music was amazing...cannot compare to todays junk.
I heard "Cliffs" on a T.V. commercial (who cares about what product they were selling, I had to know that song). I immediately called-in to one of the Denver rock stations & actually whistled the only part I picked up in such a short clip. The D.J. actually said: "OH, you whistled that well! You know, that's Eric Johnson's 'Cliffs Of Dover'! That's really something isn't it?!" I said: "Hell freakin' yeah, thank you!" & bought "Ah Via Musicom" the very next day.
I remember seeing Eric in like '87 down here in Austin on 6th Street at The Steamboat. Those were the best of times. He played around about the time Stevie Ray Vaughn was hot and so was Charlie Sexton. I saw Stevie twice, those days are gold I tell ya! Nothing beats great guitarists like Eric and Stevie. Willie Nelson plays a few shows but nothing beats the old 80's days of rock.
I love this song's interpolation of arguably the best clean tone I've heard anywhere, a slightly crunchy rhythm tone, and his signature overdriven Marshall sound.
took guitar lessons as a teenager and i remember this song specifically being mentioned as a great learning tool for not only moving across certain scales up and down the neck, but also emphasizing notes and most of all, TONE! wasn't until years later i rediscovered the song and truly understood how brilliant this song is. amazing. great interview with rick beato

First heard this song on KKSF 103.7 in the 80's while living in San Francisco and the station played smooth jazz. This and Jeff Beck's Cause we Ended as Lovers and Stevie Ray Vaughan's Riviera Paradise...
Me, too. I found Pat Metheny, The Rippingtons (Russ Freeman is another great guitarist), the Yellowjackets and many other smooth jazz and even world music through that radio station.
I read an interview of Andy Timmons talking about his search for tones in the studio and how he could never find that perfect tone every time, because he kept striving for Eric's perfection. EJ is my favorite electric guitarist. Completely innovative and a master of the instrument. Because he didn't sing a lot or push into the mainstream, he remains an "under-rated" guitarist.
