    Capturing glowing light with watercolor requires a few special techniques. In this video I will give you my favorite tips for painting light, including: 1. How to pick the right reference, 2. How to create an effective underpainting, 3. How to capture backlight and reflections, 4. How to highlight the "Edge of Light" and, finally, 5. How to organize your layers around key shadows without over-painting. In a bonus section, I will go over my watercolor layering process in detail. Download my reference photo below and let's practice together!

    To the newbies: Drying watercolor with a heat tool or hairdryer dulls down the colors. And if you use techniques like salt or granulating paint, heating will stop that process. I agree! Don’t dry your paintings!

      THANK YOU!!!! 👌 it drives me nuts when I see hairdryer used on watercolors (especially expensive ones) 😊 it’s frustrating to wait but using heat is not worth it.

      Agree, agree, agree!!! It's especially bothersome when you see it done in tutorials, it really sets a bad example and starts bad habits. When I see people doing it I think " your painting would have been so much better if you'd just waited!"

      @@ChristinaTodd1970 Thank you - and totally agree, I cringe too when I see this from artists I generally like. But I suppose at the end of the day it doesn't matter for someone who is just learning and practicing. I am guilty of a few "sins" as well, according to some feedback. Like, I use fugitive colors in my own personal work, I use real sable occasionally, and I overpaint all the time because I get carried away or just feel like it lol

    Hi- I love your painting, how you teach and etc.
    Do you or someone you know teach more beginning classes. I’m trying these classes but I’m a beginner for water color painting, so I would like to learn some basics. If I get the basics down then the rest will be much easier!! 😊 Thank you, Karen

      Karen, I am self-taught more or less when it comes to watercolor, although I studied decorative art as a child. At this point I don't have any beginner courses, and I can't recommend any confidently because I haven't taken any. I am getting a ton of requests for beginner lessons, so I am thinking of either developing one myself or doing more beginner videos here. Thank you again for your comments and suggestions - I really appreciate it!

      @@AnnaBucciarelli I would love you to do a more basic rose tutorial. Im getting very confused with all the petals and what colours to put where. Think a slower tutorial would be great....and going through each petal in detail. (lots of work for you.... LOL ). That is just my dream class from you. :-)

      Thank you Holly! I've been getting a lot of requests for more advanced classes recently, unfortunately I don't believe SkillShare would handle a 6-7 hr class [as this is how long something like this takes]. I am considering different ways to share real-time lessons and I will definitely make an announcement when I make that decision [I have hundreds of hours of footage:)

    "Try to avoid granulating colors" - darn that hurts my heart as granulating colors are my favorite!

    • @AnnaBucciarelli
      @AnnaBucciarelli  3 года назад

      Oh no! :) Granulating ones are fun for sure - but I find they obscure glazing effects. So I only meant for this particular technique they are probably not the optimal choice, especially if someone is not familiar with granulating effects.... but if you work with them a lot and like the textures - why not! :)

      @@AnnaBucciarelli Oh gosh - my skill level is at swatching. I am 47 years old and realized I needed a creative outlet. I have always wanted to learn to paint with watercolor as the medium. Lack of talent always prevented me from even trying in the past. Perhaps it's a combination of age and these uncertain times, but I suddenly felt as though it's now or never. I love playing with color. And for some reason I just absolutely fell in love with granulation and color separation. Your talent is so far beyond my wildest dreams. I watch your videos for enjoyment and relaxation. Your voice is soothing and I love the colors with which you work. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us.

  • @aprildegele1510

    I'm sure I could learn a lot from this, but honestly? It was too fast of an explanation and not enough detail covering paint colors and when you applied them. Wet on wet? Wet on dry? Wet on damp? Dry on damp? I get that videos that take less time are the most popular. But something like this needs to take more time. If you're going to teach, then teach. Don't cut so that you demo in the fastest way possible. Yikes.
    Beautiful painting, but I couldn't figure out how you actually did it to save my life based on this "tutorial".
