Puertorican here I would recommend for appetizers alcapurrias they are green banana fritters with meat in them sometimes beef sometimes pork filled. Relleno de papa is also very good it is a potato and beef fritter. Bacalaitos if they have them as well are amazing they are cod batter fritters. As for mains mofongo is always good it consists of mashed plaints, garlic and chicharron it tends to be dense a lot of the times most of the time they offer it with some sort of stock or sauce and that helps cut through the density. Pasteles are also a big puertorican staple especially around the holidays the batter consists of cassava, green bananas and or green plantains with a pork filling with peppers and green olives it is a softer texture and very much loved. For dessert we are very known for our flans, our tres leches, tembleque and several others. Hope this helps in some way!

In PR they like balance spices such as garlic, different types of peppers, onions, chorizo, ham, oregano, olives, azafrán, tomatoes, salt, olive virgen olive oil and pork skin. It's combined for seasoning or marinate according to the recipe. Some recipes require a fruit sauce such as tamarind sauce, pineapple sauce, guava sauce, etc...
We don't enjoy much hot spicy food. If we have hot spicy food is with a hot spicy sauce on the side.
Pork is the favorite red protein but seafood is the number one primary protein.
Try bacalaito, seafood empanadas, fry fish in"escabeche", any kind of mofongo, and plenty of different recipes made with local roots.
Better off... Just go to PR and enjoy everything directly from the island and under the sun by the beach.

I appreciate your honesty in trying our food. Yes I can see how our potato salad may seem bland because we only use mayonnaise has the base with some shredded onion unlike US potato salad that has mustard too. I personally like both styles of potato salad but I’m more used to it with mayonnaise on its own. The white sauce I think it’s aioli and the pink one is mayo ketchup usually it’s made with a hint of garlic and served with tostones (plantain fritters) and/or sorullitos (cornmeal fritters). I agree with your dad on the empanadillas tasting better on their own. I enjoyed watching him chow down on our food without hesitation jaja thank you for keeping it real.

Glad thar you tried Puerto Rican food 🇵🇷 . Puerto Rican food is not spicy, but but well seasoned. Potato salad is not traditional, it was incorporated into Puerto Rican cuisine because of the American influence to Puerto Rico. Not everybody knows how to make Potato salad, I believe. I eat only my own. The rice con gandules (pigeon peas), and peril (roast pork) is traditional Puerto Rican food. You can get it at any Puertorriqueño (Puerto Rican restaurant, food truck, dinner, or home. The Pincho is usually grilled with barbecue sauce. Pork and seafood is very common in Puerto Rican food. The patelillos (enpanadas) are traditionally with beef or shrimp. However, you can make it out of anything you want. The beef is called picadillo. The sauce is called mayokeshup. It used as a sauce for everything in Puerto Rican and other Latino countries fried finger foods. It made to cut off the oiliness of fried foods. I prefer it without the sauce. There were other traditional foods you didn't try. Mofongo, pasteles, pastelon, alcapurrias, rellenos de papa, piononos, and bacalaitos are traditionally Puerto Rican food. Tostones or (find green plantains) or amarillos (find sweet plantains) are traditional and is eaten with most every protein, as a side dish. Stewed proteins with white rice is popular. Chicken or seafood soup is popular. Salads may be accompanied with some dishes. We make tacos and pasta currently in modern Puerto Rican cuisine. Our proteins are either fried, boiled, broiled, grilled, steamed, roasted, or stewed. We eat root vegetables as side dishes. We also eat a lot of rice🍚. Piña Cola was invented in Puerto Rico so it's a very traditional cocktail. Coquito (Our version of eggnog) is a Christmas drink made out of coconut 🥥, is very traditional. Our breads are good. Flan (custard) is a very popular desert ( and there are others)😋 ❤. Glad you have enjoyed our food. You need to try more of our delicious cuisine. Great video! 😊

$15.00 for a plate of rice and some pork is rather steep. Over here where I am we can get a hefty plate for around 9.00 . There's nothing like that's made and sold on the island of Puerto Rico. There's this area that's called the "pork highway" yup, that's what the locals refer to it as. The pork is so tender, juicy, and ridiculously delicious it's great. It's one of those places you have to visit if you want the true Puerto Rican experience instead of holding up in some resort.

first off i think it's great that you are sharing your culinary experiences with your father.
i think the price of the first plate was a bit too high.....but not a scam.
    pernil is almost always good.
the yellow rice is just plain normal rice cooked with something that colours it.
    most people use annato.
it's the seeds of a plant that when heated, release a red dye. people heat it with oil and then use that oil for colouring their food.
i make my yellow rice with paprika and turmeric. i'm not a fan of annato. the yellow rice also usually includes some spices and is more stewed than just boiled. and just like that restaurant i usually ad olives when i make it with pigeon peas....i just love olives.
pinchos are very common here. it's just that, meat on a stick broiled over a flame. there's one place within walking distance of my house....and if i'm willing to drive a few minutes there are several others.
i heard someone describe our food as "spicy but not hot". we use a lot of spices. but the level of heat is low. in many places they have hot sauce available, for those who like the heat.
    ah that sauce is mayoketchup.
mayo and ketchup ar ethe main ingredients, in most places they also add a bit of black pepper, garlic and olive oil. and maybe a pinch of paprika.
it goes well with fried foods. some people even use it as salad dressing.

Oh I LIKE this video! I've never been to a food truck! All in all a fun video :)
I doctor up everybody's potato salad. I'm super finicky about it and it has to have dill and onion. No mustard or whatever is fine as long as those two things are in it so it wouldn't bother me that it was bland. I would love to try the rice and pulled pork!!! I would pass on that meat on a stick and steal all the garlic bread :)
I've only had a chicken and cheese empanada from Taco Bell but I loved it. Wish we knew what that white sauce was, I would like to try to make it.
The only thing I would worry about is eating spices your body isn't used to ;) just sayin ;) LOL

Puertorican food is sweet and savory not spicy. Its carribean food very different from Mexican food. You have to go to the island to eat the real thing or a an authentic puertorican restaurant and it has to be in Florida or New York where theres a huge concentration of puertoricans and puertorican ingredients. In other states its not the same at all they don’t have the same ingredients to cook it with. The food is 10/10 its literally one of the most delicious savory foods out there. Piña colada was created in Puerto Rico so you can get an idea. Also the sauce its called ‘mayoketchup’ it has mayo, ketchup and garlic in it , it can also be made without the garlic. Loved your video and God bless your father hes so cute🩷
