Great episode as always! Started my journey with stubs, now definitely in a F or XF.

As always, a very enjoyable show. I seem to have been using a fine, and sometimes extrafine for journaling and have a few medium nibs but I really gravitate toward the finer nibs as it offers what seems to be just a cleaner look. I tend to use the broader nibs, including a music nib, when I'm making notes that I really want to have stand out. The Monteverde offering that you highlighted is so intriguing and promises to be a "need to consider" opportunity.

Thanks for the happy Thursday time!
Favorite nib: I'm fortunate to have two pens with Naginata-style nibs. One was ground from a BB, the other from a Medium nib. What I like is their versatility. They can act like F, M, or B just by holding the pen at a different angle. Stubs are fun too, as long as they're based on a M or B. The typical 1.1 mm stub often feels too wide for general use.

I loves me a medium with a cursive italic grind from Gena of Custom Nib Studio but not gonna lie, I've also got a few fines and stubs in the quiver. Thanks again for all you guys do!

I love shimmer and shading inks, so I love a 1.1mm stub. But for everyday writing I prefer a fine nib. I always look forward to Thursday's podcast. Thanks!

I love me some stubs! My favorite is the pilot vanishing point stub. So soft and bouncy! Lays down a nice load of ink with a lot of shading and makes my scribbles look like calligraphy of a sort.

Thanks for another great episode of APTV. My preferred nib sizes are 03B (very rare - I love my Pelikan M800 with this nib) or 1.1mm Stub. These nibs fit to my handwriting which is quite large and expressive.

Hi Lisa and Brian. Happy day after 🐪day! For general every day use I prefer a Western EF or F, or equivalent (Japanese F, MF, M), frequently, it comes down to the paper I am using at the time. I also use Oblique Medium, Zoom, Journaler, and Scribe nibs for sketching, practicing calligraphy, or just to have a different line/letter style.

I like Broad nibs for "at home" uses (journaling, notes, lists, etc ...) and Medium for "on the road" usage for more clarity in reading. I do have others, and enjoy them too for specific uses and play time, but Broad is my love.

Great episode! *cough* still didn't clean my TWSBI 580 *cough* My TWSBI 580 is EF, but I do want to try F & M. I really need to work on building a collection, but man I procrastinate looking for THE DEAL, and just end up paying more in the end. One of these days I will learn! Have a great week!

Yes Brian! No should talk before I have had my cup of coffee in the morning...or afternoon! As for the contest question, my preference is Italic!!! I love a formal italic nib. But if I can't get that, my preference has recently changed from broad to medium. It really helps make my handwriting be more legible. But I love O bliqes a lot, as well.

I'm super excited to try out one of the Monteverde MP1 pens! I'll probably pick one up in black noir with a 1.1 mm stub or broad. I used to gravitate towards a fine or extra-fine nib, but as I've used fountain pens more and more, I've learned I really like using a broader nib. Not only do I find it better for my handwriting, but I also really like how a broader nib distributes ink regardless of its properties.

Medium nibs generally but the 580 ALR has a stub, and there are one or two fines in the mix too.

Thanks for another entertaining episode. So far, my favorite nib size is medium, but I've only tried medium and fine nibs to date. I am thinking of getting something with a broad nib next, though with my messy handwriting that may not be such a good idea.

Most of my pens are EF. A few are F and M. I have no other nib sizes yet. I mostly use my fountain pens on just regular paper at work, so with EF nibs, I don't have to worry much about bleeding/feathering.

My perfered nib width is either 1.0mm stub, Large Broad ( there was a batch of twsbi Go pens that had an amazingly huge broad nib ) or a FPR ultra flex nib :)

I’m with Brian in that I generally prefer medium nibs, but Lisa made a good point a while back that a fine might be better for my writing style, which tends to be smallish so I can fit my daily thoughts into my 5-year journal.

Preferred nib width? I am more interested in unique nibs, than a particular width. So I have pens from EF to BBB, with stub, italic, oblique, architect and flex versions. Vive la variete!

When I started I was into extra fine nibs. Later on I realized that ink properties do not show as good with thin nibs so I transitioned to medium. Currently I quite enjoying broads/stubs as you can really see the colors pop and shimmer/shading. It is quite challenging writing in small spaces for work though 😅.

Great show I wish I could beam up to your area to go to a pen social gathering. It sounds like fun. My favorite nib has evolved over time from broad to medium. I enjoy spicing up my fountain pen life with a few fines as well. I am with Brian Japanese I go for broad as well. Flex nibs and architect are great too.

I have more fine nibs than any other nib. A fine nib is practical and can be used for writing notes at work or journaling in the evening. I am branching out to other nibs including some more exotic ones such as the techo, architect, or journaler nib. Like Lisa, I’m more of a morning person. See you next time!

Because of my smaller handwriting style, I prefer a fine nib. I do have a couple of stub nibs for shimmer ink and sheening inks. Some fine nibs can be so juicy that my e’s are disguised.

Weeellll, generally I like medium nibs, but I bought medium Japnese and I like them too, and I like a fine nib if it is a flexible one. I also like to write with architect nibs in Hebrew (as well as with my Naginata), and for painting you should also have EF and fude....I think I'm constantly inconsistent 😅
In any way, not all medium nibs are the same.

I most always choose a broad nib. I write very large, in Hobonichi I use 2-3 lines as one. I was told by teachers I don’t write, I draw my cursive writing.

  • @jeffellis662

Right now a 0.5mm nib width which is somewhere between F and M. It used to be 0.65mm which is somewhere between M and B depending on the nib maker. Picking out a nib can be a real pain. Even for one company like Jowo the #5’s tend to write narrower then #6’s and the Jowo 14k gold #6 writes wider than the steel #6. Every maker seems to have a different idea about nib grades. Compare a Pelikan gold nib to an Aurora. Heck my new Aurora Optima M 0.55mm is almost the same as my Talentum B 0.60mm. They must have changed how they grind them in the 7 years between the two nibs.
